Feb 10, 2012
I am having trouble installing Windows to my external harddrive. I have more than enough space (~350GB) free, but the Windows 7 installer DVD will not let me install to this space.I need to install to this harddrive because the HDD that came with the computer is dead

Im running windows 7 and I would like to reallocate my HD space from my E drive to my C drive. C drive is the main drive of course, after installing Windows 7 I only have 25 GB free and I would like to allocate some of the 250 GB from my E drive. Is this possible without a full wipe on my memory to reinstall windows 7

I recently purchased a new HDD drive for my HP laptop. I was able back-up my data and create the restore disc. Once I install the new Harddrive and go through system recovery on the new HDD once the computer reboots to install W7 it does nothing. all it does is displays the HP emblem and the esc key does not do anything.

Won't boot off external hard drive[windows7pro64bitInstallation](320GB)'ve been making custom images of Windows 7 for my work. Currently I am working on an image filled with loads of programs (the wim file is 27gb). I have followed the normal instructions to create a bootable usb drive.captured the wim using imagex, used bootsect /nt60 on the external drive etcI am just wondering, is the reason it won't boot, is because it's not a flash drive?Previously all my other windows 7 builds have been on 8gb flash sticks. Is it possible to make a working bootable installation drive on a 320 external hard drive?and if there is a way.

I just purchased and intalled windows 7 home premium 64bit. I have a 250gig hard drive, which now shows only 32 gig of free space. I've done little more than reload some pictures and a few programs I used when I had the computer set up with XP. why my hard drive is nearly full or where I went wrong with the setup?

My problem in a unique one. I installed Windows 7 on my computer back a few months ago, using the given product key. Since that time, though, I have had to install a new hard drive on my computer. I wasn't able to retain any of the data from my old harddrive -- it was a fresh start. I've installed Windows 7 on this new harddrive with the same disk, but now the product key won't work, because I already used it when I installed it last.
I'd rather not have to buy a new copy of Windows 7, considering I'm not installing it on multiple computers. I'm installing it on one computer. I just didn't uninstall it when I replaced my harddrive. Any suggestions? Do you think Microsoft would be able to revalidate my product key?

When I try to install windows 7 I get to the point where you have to select which drive/partition you want to install it on. This is when the installation hits a brick wall. I had recently backed up and reformatted a 270GB partition of my HDD and decided to use that to install my windows 7 on it. The problem is that when I try to install it on that partition it says that I don't have enought space even though it has 270GB free. I've tried running the setup from windows xp and from the disc via reboot.

Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Intel 510 SSD I am having a problem where Windows 7 re-installations keep eating up large amounts of space on the drive.
The first time I had to re-install the OS I did a "clean re-install" and found I was using 6 more GB than before. I shrugged it off as temporary files and I'm not sure if the space ever returned.
The second time (today) I did a "repair install" and found I was using 8 more GB after than I was before. I've used CCleaner but it's only finding a few hundred MB of data to delete.
My "Windows" directory is 16.5GB
There is a folder called "System Volume Information" with files all created today that is 7.9GB I'm going to guess this is where that space has gone?

I am planning on making a windows 7 image with macrium reflect free. Windows 7 is installed on a 290 GB partition. Now, only 22.3 GB of that space is being used, pretty much by windows 7 and other third-party programs. Will macrium reflect back up that 22.3 GB or back up all 290 GB which is mostly free space? ( I know that the question seems a little weird, but I want to make sure)

I'm running Windows 7 64bit on a notebook. One 500GB drive partitioned to an OS drive and a data drive.I run AVAST (paid version), Malware Bytes and unhackme and no viruses/trojans/rootkits discovered - I'm a stickler for security.I noticed in Windows Exploring that both drives were getting low on available storage (both <8GB). I copied 30GB from the data drive and 10GB from the OS drive to an external drive and deleted the files from the notebook, using shift key/delete. I cleared the Recycle Bin; ran Disk error check (Scandisk) and defragged both drives.Folder Size & Treesize Pro both tell me I have 180GB & 100Gb respectively free; versus Windows Explorer 5Gb & 6GB.My available storage only increased by 800MB and 600MB respectively after deleting the files, so for a file removal of 40Gig I get back 1.4gig of HD space.I've checked pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys [8GB between them] and they haven't altered recently.Ran CCleaner's Registry cleaner - no difference.I rang the OS support for my Notebook Manufacturer and spent 1/2 a day trying different things including HD tune. They couldn't figure it out but suggested Utorrent may be grabbing HDD space so I uninstalled it.... no difference.

My mom got her laptop from Best Buy, and it came with Geek Squad optimization. They made it so the C: drive is around 58GB, and the D: is the other GBs which add up to 500GB. She is practically out of room on her C: and the computer is almost unusable. I already deleted the D: partition, but the partition manager in Windows 7 won't let me extend the partition to fill up all of the space. The option to extend it is just grayed out.

I have a Samsung 700Z5B-W01 new laptop. I was trying to do an install of Ubuntu alongside my Windows 7 but when I tried to do this, it just created 100 GB worth of unallocated space that I can't do anything with and it also made it to where my C: drive is only 50 MB's now.

I originally had the free space as a D: Drive but decided to reallocate the space used back onto C:. I have gotten this far but am unsure how to continue because the extend drive option for C: is grayed out. I believe this is because the space which used to be D: is still shown as an extended partition. I have a Samsung RC512 with an Intel Core i7 Quad core processor and Windows 7 Home Premium.

I am running Windows 7, and for some reason my computer says I have no disk space free when I have recently deleted items freeing up about 40 more GB.For example, if I try to create a new folder, it says "There is not enough space on SW_Preload (C:). 0 bytes is needed to copy this item. Delete or move files so you have enough space." The reason I started deleting files is because my disk defragmenter wasn't working. I thought if I deleted some files then it would be able to move them around better? Well, all it seemed to have accomplished is making my disk think it's fuller...

I am having a new problem with a 1 year old computer I built running Windows 7 64 bit.
I have two hard drives:
Solid State (Mainly just the OS on here)2nd hard drive with everything else on it.Windows is saying I have used 31.5 gb of space on the SSD.When I enable hidden folders/files and select everything on the drive, it is only coming up with 21.5gb used.I DO NOT have system restore enabled.I DO NOT have Windows backup enabled.Honestly have no clue what is causing this 10gb or so of space to be unaccounted for but I know it wasn't always like this

i have a reformated HDD that previously contained WinXP. When I installed Win 7 couple of years ago I retained the old drive until I could remove other data from it. That has all been done. The drive has been reformatted, but used space is 100MB. I suspect it was set aside for Win 7 System Reserved space. How can force that space to be freed?

I have a problem regarding space in c: drive. I installed win 7 in c: drive for second time because of my pc is very slow. I thought the reason for that is low free space in my c: drive. After installing win 7 I have installed programs listed below:
Adobe reader 9.0
Google chrome
Intel graphics media accelerator driver
jdk 7
avast free antivirus
MS Office 2007 package
I have allocated 30GB out of 120GB for c: drive. But, now my pc's c: drive's used space is over 18GB. I think there is some problem with configurations of win 7 in my pc.

My biggest folders are seemingly Network Service and AppData. My OS is on an SSD with 60GB, I have another 1TB SATA and a second 60GB SSD as well. If I were to create these two folders in the second SSD, and make them point there, would this cause any issues? I am trying to re-enable my pagefile because it is currently set to 16MB and I can't create a full memory dump unless I set it back to the original 8GB. I only have 4GB free on my SSD, and it is not enough. The other SSD is empty and entirely available.

When I tired to create a partition, Windows reports that there's isn't enough space available to complete this operation. I don't know what's wrong,[CODE]

i own Garrysmod, a steam source-mod. It is a game that grows dynamically as I connect to server's, download addons, and receive mandatory game updates. The game file has exceeded 50Gb before. After getting infected with "Windows 7 Antivirus Pro" and making (I freely admit it, and I REALLY should have known better) a terrible mistake and breaking all .exe's while removing the infection, I was forced to re-install windows. However, for whatever reason (another stupid mistake) I re-installed windows on the wrong hard-drive. So now my C: drive is only 150 Gb, and my backup (both of them) are 1TB.I do not have the space to have garrysmod on my C: drive, which is where steam is installed (Last time I tried installing it somewhere else it would not work.)Now that the background information is done lets move on to what you can help me with!
I have been looking for a way to install garrysmod on another hard-drive without reinstalling steam and trying to get it to work on another hard-drive. I believe I have found one, but I am really a coward when it comes to this sort of thing, (I HATE re-formatting) the solution I have found apparently tells the computer that the directory/file is on C: when it is actually on another hard-drive, but I found it in an old forum thread, and the member that had posted it was banned.
