Automatic Daily Backup?
Feb 20, 2012
I bought a 1 TB western digital external hard drive to use as a backup. I created a disc image of my computer but I am wondering if there is software that will create a daily backup by checking for any files that are different so that it does not have to make a new disc image daily. I plan on leaving my regular computer and this backup drive always on. Is this possible and what software is recommended?

I'd like to automatically backup certain folders to an external hard drive every time it's plugged in. I've tried Windows 7 Backup tool but it creates an icon and I would like the folder to be able to be navigatable (for the reason that I need to know what has been backed up and what hasn't, also I don't want to restore an entire folder at times, sometimes I just want to restore a couple of files).
How can I make this happen? Using either Windows 7 backup or another tool

I'm looking for an external hard drive to backup all of my documents that can do the following:Say I have the hard drive already. I have all of my documents on my laptop and a copy of each of them in the hard drive. When I finished writing a new document and plug in the external hard drive, the hard drive will automatically detect that I have a new document and will make a copy of that document in the external. The hard drive will also automatically copy and replace any new version of the existed older documents.

i am running Windows 7 sp1, amd quad core, 6 gigs of ram. A couple of months ago, after either rebooting or logging back in, my computer began popups saying that various programs have stopped working. For instance: "Iomega automatic backup has stopped working". In a box under it: "Check online for a solution and close the program". And in another box: "Close the program". Other programs that quit working at the same time: Mesh operating environment, Adobe reader, Adobe acrobat, IE, Cyberlink, and one or two others that don't come to mind right now. Allmost all the other programs on my computer won't open and give the same popup. My virus program, Avast opens easily, but thats about it. I can open some programs by going to their file location, changing its compatability to Vista and then opening as admin. Threatfire on the other hand won't open unless I change its compatability to windows 7. Anyway, did virus check, ran threatfire, and some other things I can't remember right now. If I restore to an earlier period my computer works OK. That is until I log out/in or reboot. Then it goes back to its screwed up self. I'm reluctant to re-install windows as I have a finance/check writing program I use for my business that is a bear to re-install and get all the files in their proper place.

I have a Toshiba laptop A500 series running Windows 7 Home premium 64 bit. the computer was purchased in May. I am using MSE and Panda as my anti Virus--and Malwarebytes also. I scanned with all of them yesterday and they say my computer is free form anything malicious. However 2 times this week including this morning at startup the computer is checking C. I am worried that something is wrong.

I am not confidant that I posess the skills, vocabulary or knowledge needed to participate in this forum however this random shut down problem has become so regular that I require some assistance. Essentially it feels like every time I leave the computer unattended for more than an hour or two I return to find the black screen of death telling me my computer did not shut down properly. Attached is the SF Tools file you reference. - Have figured out how to use Event viewer - 17 Critical Event occurances involving Kernal-power (Event ID41 Task Category63) since 2012_06_02; 1xJune 02, 1xJune 06, 1xJun 18, 1xJun 23, 2xAug 08, 3xAug 10, 1xAug 11, then twice daily since the 12th.

I keep getting two Windows updates on practically a daily basis. They are KB2676562 and KB2679255. These two updates download and install successfully every time. I've tried hiding them, but they just come back a day or so later. Maybe there are no other updates available, but I haven't gotten any other updates other than Microsoft Security Essentials virus definitions since late July.

Every morning about 30-45 minutes after boot the computer BSOD. Looking at the Nirsoft bluescreen review its caused most of the time by Threatfire which is a PCTools file the antivirus run on the machine.
Back in December prior to PCTools I had Microsoft AV on and AVG each seemed to cause the same problem.
I've run the windows 7 memory check but if I change it to run more than 2 times it freezes and never completes. Spybot, PCtools, Sophos, never found any significant threats
HW:
Macbook air late 2008
2gb ram
Intel core 2 duo
Windows 7 enterprise 32bit
My next step is to try turning off Threatfire, effectively shutting of the antivirus.

I have an ASUS n80vn laptop that is about 3 years old. It came with OEM Windows Vista, but I installed my own copy of Windows 7 Professional 64bit more than two years ago, and there was no problem upon installation.
Lately (for about a month), I have been receiving BSOD either during boot or the log-in screen. The BSOD usually happens only once per day, and I would be forced to restart my computer. No BSOD upon restart. I suspect the problem occurs when the laptop is cold. I have attached the BSOD Dump files collected over the past month.
The only driver change I've had was nVidia graphic driver updates. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the two most recent drivers and the BSOD problem still occurs.
On a side note, I have been getting random freeze-ups too, and this has been happening before the BSOD problem. These freezes occur when I'm doing regular tasks such as web browsing or typing in Word/Excel etc. When my system freezes, there is no BSOD, but nothing can be moved (keyboard + mouse won't do anything). Closing lid does nothing too. Strangely, I have not been getting this kind of freezes when I play games.
Quick rundown of specs:
-Windows 7 Professional 64bit (retail)
-Age of hardware: ~3 years
-Age of OS: ~2
-Processor: Intel core duo P8600 2.40 GHz
-RAM: 4GB
-GPU: GeForce 9650m GT

For about 2-3 weeks now, I've been experience random BSODs. After trying several things, I decided to reset to factory last week. All was well until a few days later, it continued with another BSOD. Ever since then, I've been getting them at random. Sometimes it'll happen 10 minutes after I boot my computer, other times it could take a day or so.I download Bluescreenview in hopes that I could find what was causing this issue and get it resolved.Bluescreenview stats that the bug check string is: KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLEDcaused by driver: ntoskrnl.exeThere are other crashes where the driver was hal.dll and win32k.sys.I'm not sure how to post my MiniDump files, I've tried accessing them, even with the Windows Debugging tool, but it says I don't have permission to open the file.[CODE]

System: Dell Inspiron laptop,
Studio 16 XPS
Windows 7 Home Premium w/Service Pack 1 (64 bit)
Intel Core Duo 2.8 Ghz, 4 GB RAM.
The problem is that Flash will not stay installed. Another problem (related?) is that I *cannot* install Itunes on this computer, it will error out each time, and Apple is notorious for telling me it is a Windows problem, nothing they can do, so I found a way around the "long pole in the tent" requirement of Itunes to Sync iPad/iPod, and this really isn't even a "problem" anymore as much as an annoyance. Other utilities, Avast virus protection, Malware Bytes, Spybot Search/Destroy with immunization, and always running Iolo System Mechanic.
All software and operating system is up to date with current patches and updates. A program I use regularly that may be suspect but also seems so innocuous as to have no bearing on it is a keyboard macro program, Keyboard Express v4. For example with this program, I can define some hot keys like ALT-CTRL-T which will insert some text I define to the program into wherever the cursor is at on the current web page or Word document. Always text, no graphics or funkiness here.
I usually use Firefox (v11.0) as my browser but interestingly enough, I discover that Flash has also disappeared when I go to IE (v9), and it appears there is a different Flash for IE than there is for Firefox, depending on which browser is used to download (multiple times daily) the Flash installer. An interesting aspect is that after I re-install Flash, IE and/or Firefox, then later on go to Outlook and click a link in an email, Outlook gives me an error message about not being able to open the link. But if I reboot, Outlook is now fine to click on and open that same link, although Flash has again gone away.

Periodically, lately it's at least daily, my mouse cursor freezes and the computer becomes unresponsive requiring cold boot. This sometimes happens even before I log on if I boot up and don't log on then come back later, the mouse may be frozen. It also happens while in idle and screen saver is running. I was running in Safe Mode w/ Networking today and it also happened. The mouse I was using was a MS Wireless Mouse 5000.
That one would just freeze. I accidentally destroyed it and am now using a MS Wireless ARC mouse instead. The only difference I notice is that the ARC mouse will occasionally pause the cursor in a spot for a second or two and then continue. However, it also will eventually freeze and lock system. Not sure how to identify where the problem is. I've updated the NVIDIA driver recently to the latest one.

Any simple backup program that is capable of backing up large files incrementally by splitting the file and backing up only changed parts of the file? The files I'm talking about are files that get altered by appending stuff at the end of the file, e.g. log files or mailbox files, so it's generally possible to split a new version of the file at the exact point where the old version stopped, purely by file size.
Specifically, I want to back up Thunderbird and SeaMonkey mailboxes without having to create additional subfolders within those programs. I understand that if something had changed near the beginning of the file, then the whole file will have to be backed up, unless the backup program is capable of some very clever searching, but mostly the files will change only by having data appended to it.

I'm running Windows 7 64x Home Premium on a Toshiba Qosmio X505 laptop. I just got it back from the warranty repair center, where they replaced the hard drive and graphics fan & heatsink, and reloaded the factory windows version. Before I sent it out for repair, I used Windows Backup to create a backup of all my files on a Toshiba casio 500GB external USB drive (I had over 300 GB of files, so it was easier to use Windows Backup than drag and drop all the files, at least at the time). Now that I have the laptop back, I'm having trouble restoring my files. When I go to Control Panel-> Backup & Restore, a message appears in the restore section, saying "Windows could not find a backup for this computer." I've tried reconnecting the drive as well as restarting my computer, but to no avail. I can see and explore the files in My Computer, so I know the hard drive is properly connected.
