NTLDR + Non System Disk Error?

Jul 2, 2012

I have an HP Elitebook laptop. I got it new about 2 years ago and have had it attached to a docking station since I bought it. Connected to the docking station is an external hard drive where I store a complete backup of my laptop (I use the program "Norton Ghost"). I should probably also mention that the HP laptop used to have Windows Vista installed on it. I installed Windows 7 over it.

The Problem Recently when booting my computer I have noticed that I sometimes get a NTLDR or non-system disk error. Two things confuse me about this:

1) They only started within the last 4 months. I haven't changed anything.

2) They are random and don't always occur.

My attempts First off, here is my current boot order:

Notebook Hard Drive
Notebook Upgrade Bay
USB CD Rom
USB Floppy
External SATA
USB Hard Drive
Docking station upgrade bay
... some other stuff

Playing around with the boot order yields interesting results. If I change the order, the NTLDR error will disappear an the non-system disk error will appear and vice-versa.

Restore Zip File Download Function To Open Zip Attachments?

Nov 3, 2011

I'm not computer savvy but I can follow directions pretty well. Recently, I've discovered I cannot open any Zip files from my computer. I get an Adobe Acrobat error message saying I cannot open file because it is either not supported or file is damaged. This message comes up every time I try to open a zip file, no matter the source. I suspect it may be a default association problem based on the research I have done but I don't know how to correct the issue. As I said, I don't know a lot about operating systems.

System Restore Will Not Function Correctly?

Jul 9, 2012

I've had my laptop for a number of years now and within the past 2 years it would not allow me to do a return to factory default, so i just left it alone. But now i bought a very expensive Rosetta stone package and will not download because of my firewall. My firewall is giving me a code error five and i have tried many methods to fix it and it will not work. So i decided i have to do a Factory default for the best anyways and get rid of a bunch of items i do not use. But now i am back to my original problem, my computer will not allow me to do a return to factory default or create a factory default CD. When i try an create a CD using Gateway Recovery Management the CD progress remains at 0% for 2 straight days. So is there a way i can force a Return to factory default on my laptop.

RealTemp System Tray Function?

Jun 5, 2012

So I installed RealTemp 3.40 and was exploring the options for it and stumbled accross the System Tray options where it displays the temps for your GPU/Cores on the taskbar next to the Tray. So I put them on there but didn't realize they disappear when you close the program. I could run the program minimized for this but I'd rather not, just another window to cycle through since I use Aero so much.Does anyone know of a way to get these temps to stay on the bar/sys tray without having to run the program minimized?

Search Function In Windows 7 X64 Not Finding "within File" Content

Oct 21, 2011

I have Windows 7 Ultimate x64, the drives are indexed and I have all folder search options set to "Always search file names and contents" and "Include system directories" and "include compressed files" but search is not finding content I know to be present.

For example text in Word Docs and content in Zip files are often not found, usually not. How do I set up Search so it actually searches "within contents" like it does in XP, which may be slower but at least it works.

File Too Large For Destination File System?

Feb 27, 2012

So I found a post on this forum with a similar problem. I'm trying to move a file that is larger than 4GB in size from my main hard drive to an external, and getting the error message in the title. The consensus on the other post was that the hard drive must have been a FAT format, and that too fix the problem either split up the file or reformat the hard drive as NTFS.Well, by all accounts, my computer is telling me that my external hard drive is ALREADY formatted as NTFS, but I'm still getting this error. I would prefer not to split up the file, but other than that, what are my options?

NTLDR Missing During Install?

Sep 7, 2010

I've just recieved Windows 7 Ultimate but when I try and boot it from the CD it comes up with the error message'NTLDR is missing press ctrl alt del to restart'.The confusing part of this is that I've not yet installed the OS, this is after I select which drive to boot from, but before the Install page comes up.I've also tried installing from my current Windows XP OS, but when I do so it comes up with the error code 0x80070490 ~ which means it can't 'Find a location to store temporary installation files.'[code] It's not a matter of me burning a bad .iso file as I bought the DVDs whole from Microsoft, so I neither downloaded or burnt them.

NTLDR Is Missing In Windows 7?

Jun 27, 2011

I have 3 physical hard drives, we'll call them A, B, and C. Hard Drive A has a partition for Windows 7, a NTFS partition for storage, a EXT3 (Linux), and swap (Linux). Hard Drive B has 1 NTFS for storage. Hard Drive C has 1 NTFS for storage. I am trying to replace Hard Drive B (with nothing related to Windows 7 on it) and when I try to boot into Windows with my new blank drive installed I get "NTLDR is missing." From what I've read NTLDR was only used up to Windows XP. The drive I am trying to remove isn't even associated with Windows 7 anyway. When I put Drive B back in everything works fine again. why I cant remove drive B even though it has nothing to do with the physical or logical drive containing Windows 7?

Where Is BOOTMGR And NTLDR Stored

Dec 6, 2012

Whenever I encounter a boot error like these, my first course of action is to scan the hard drive. I have done too many re-installs that have failed, fixes that only 1/2 work, and so on and so forth because the hard drive has been bad. So, the question is, are these stored right at the beginning of the drive? Or is there not specific place for them? Essentially, if I scan the first GB Of a HDD, and it doesn't find any errors, is it safe to assume that the NTLDR or the BOOTMGR isn't corrupt as a result of a defective HDD?

NTLDR Is Missing At Bootup?

Aug 16, 2011

I installed Windows 7 again after a couple months on XP, and I was just getting everything moved and copied from my secondary hard drive which stores my Acronis backups, and all of my data. The last thing I did was install Acronis, which wanted me to restart my PC. No problem, it worked just fine. Made a backup, and turned on Acronis Startup Recovery Manager (ASRM)... Everything worked perfect until I restarted for some reason, I don't remember what it was... I got NTLDR Is Missing, press Alt+Ctrl+Del to restart So I did, and it came up again, and couldn't find a way to fix it...Even trying to use "fixmbr" from a Win2000 disc's console didn't work, which usually, it fixes things like that.... I set it down for the night...Woke up, and had the strange idea of unplugging and removing the hard drive that contains my data files and Acronis Secure Zone.... And wow, It worked...how can I plug my hard drive back in and be able to boot up? Remove Acronis? Turn off ASRM?

NTLDR Is Missing Press CTRL + ALT + DEL?

Nov 12, 2012

I used Active @ KillDisk to wipe the hard drive completely clean on a machine that was running Windows 7. After ejecting the Active @ disc, I restarted the machine with the Windows 7 disc in the cd/dvd drive, after already having changed the boot order to boot from the cd/dvd drive, and recieved the infamous "NTLDR is missing Press CNTRL + ALT + DEL" message.

I've tried multiple Windows discs (Xp, Vista, AND 7) to no avail. Still receiving the same error message. I can't even get to the stage of being able to run the Windows repair.

Windows 7 WD ESATA Hard Drive Crash NTLDR Is Missing

Jan 13, 2012

Had a dual-boot system (Win 7 on drive 1, XP on drive 2) installed. Got an NTLDR is missing error on the primary WD drive on which Win 7 was installed. XP wouldn't boot either because the MBR is on the primary drive. So, I had to reinstall XP and all the software on the 2nd drive and test in original and another computer. Worked fine. When plugged into the motherboard, the Win 7 eSATA drive is not recognized by either of the 2 computers in the BIOS. It won't boot and I can't even look at the drive to see the contents - it's a non-entity as far as Windows is concerned. I plugged it into a Mac with an external eSATA to USB adapter and the Mac saw the drive but said that it was unreadable and asked if I wanted to format the drive. Since I thought I might want to try to recover files, I didn't. Anyway to see the contents of this drive with Windows and recover them or does it seem to be dead from the description?
