Search Function In Windows 7 X64 Not Finding "within File" Content
Oct 21, 2011
I have Windows 7 Ultimate x64, the drives are indexed and I have all folder search options set to "Always search file names and contents" and "Include system directories" and "include compressed files" but search is not finding content I know to be present.
For example text in Word Docs and content in Zip files are often not found, usually not. How do I set up Search so it actually searches "within contents" like it does in XP, which may be slower but at least it works.

In the Start / Search box is it possible to set up a serach that only brings up file names and not text in every file / document? I'm looking for a document with medical in the file name but when I search fo it I come up with every email, document, website etc that has the word medical somewhere in the text / content. I'm trying to narrow the search to file names only.

If I create a file called simon.txt in say C:ew docs and hit windows key and 'F' why when I type the file name into the search does it not come up. surely searching is a basic function? It worked fine on XP. I don't understand why it changed - speed I suppose.I have tried reindexing and rebuild and all that but still is this not basic?

I have been all over the internet and through the tutorials. I have searched Windows Help and I can't seem to find the answer. To be fair I am an XP user and am completely sold on Seven albut for this one problem.
I am searching for very specific strings that are contained in multiple XLS files in a single subdirectory. I know that these strings exist in a Text field in all of these files. Windows search doesn't seem to have an advanced search screen and it always fails to find any numbers. As a matter of fact it shows no hits at all.

I recently needed to find some files (MS Word which contained a specific word). From Windows Explorer, I selected the root of the directory in which I thought the files resided, entered the word I wanted to find in the Search box, and 16 files were found.
I then repeated the search using a stand-alone search tool and it found several hundred files.
I looked at the search options and they ARE configured to search the directory in question and MS Word documents. (Since some files were found, it seems reasonable to assume that the search options are configured properly.) It also reported that my system was fully indexed.

When I type a search into either the start menu or a folder search or anywhere it fails to find files. I tried re-indexing, but it actually reduced my index from ~3500 to 279 files. I don't understand why it won't find anything.I transferred a lot of folders from my old computer (Vista) to this one via my external hard drive. It will not find any files from those folders. For example, I have MS Word documents from school and even if I open the exact folder its in and search the exact name it won't find any results.
I have an extensive library of public domain books in various folders but I used the search to find things. Now, even if I'm in the exact folder a file is in it won't find it. For example, if a file is named "JJ Blunt, Undesigned Coincidences" and I search that exact phrase while looking at the file in a folder, it will say no results found. If I search "Blunt" or "JJ" the same thing happens. The only thing that has done anything is if I right click an individual file, go to properties, go to details, tell it to remove all personal information, and then it will index and search for it. But I have literally 10s of 1000s of files I want to search, and to do this manually would take at least a full day. Is there any way to make this work?Even more startling, documents I've made with this computer and put into folders from my old computer to maintain my sorting system will not show up either. So the only files it will find are those in folders I've made on this computer and have files made on this computer. Not a single other file will be found.

I have a program called BigJig, which has jigsaw files (.jg6) and my saved completed/part-done jigsaws (.sv8) files. When I had XP I always saved the .sv8 to the same folder the .jg6 was in.. Then Vista started dumping them somewhere else, despite the fact that I would tell BigJig to save to the folder I wanted them in. I finally found them.. I think they were in some user profile in application data or something. Should have moved them then, but I didn't. Well, now that I've upgraded to 7, they re back to sving where I want them, but I cannot find the ones Vista dumped in the wrong place anywhere.. search does not find any of the files, neither the .jg6 nor the .sv8, even though they are there, I can see them inBigJig, open them, mess with them etc. But some of them are in the wrong folders, and so, because I can't find them, I can't move them to where I want them to be.. if that makes sense. BigJig doesn't have a 'save as' option, so I can't save them to the right place and delete the wrong one.. I need to move them in windows explorer or my computer, but until i can find them I can't fix their locations. How can I find the actual location of these files?

After doing a clean install but saving files in 'Windows.old' Wingdings 2 & Wingdings 3 fonts have disappeared. They aren't in the the fonts folder and I need them. PC started acting inappropriately during searches. Press Window Key, press W key to get Wordpad and it would show things like Calculator, VLC Player or Irfanview. Or press Window Key, press I for Internet Explorer and it shows Notepad, Paint or Word.

So I just did a fresh install of windows 7 and now all of the sudden the search function, as far as I can tell, does not work. At all. I tell it to search for a simple file I KNOW is there and it does not bring it up. It brings up nothing. Infact it wont find anything on my computer at all. Seems 100% useless. So whats up with that? I never had issues with Windows search before, not with Vista, XP, or any other. is there a 3rd party search engine I can use to find stuff on my computer? I have almost 3TB of stuff, I can rarely remember where I have stored every single thing I would use.

The contents of several file and folders has gone missing. This includes the "My Pictures" library (my biggest concern) and a few others. Like a couple random Games, Steam, just odd seemingly random folders. This may have been caused by some recent changes, which I will get into- but I am pretty close to just saying several thousand pictures are just...gone.Secondary Problem: I recently had a pretty scary ordeal with the user profiles on my machine. When attempting to login, it would state that the User settings had been altered and would not let me log in. That has been taken care of now, but I feel the two problems are connected, and this is why:Several days ago I was attempting to install a Logitech Web Camera onto my Windows 7 X86 OS. Logitech does not provide drivers for this OS or support the installation, but I have in fact been able to install it in the past with some clever workarounds. While attempting to re-create the troublesome install I had used in the past I caused the Profile problem. The Logitech cam Drivers (Model V-uu22 Drivers for Vista if that is important) touch many parts of the machine they are installed on. There is a sub-folder that is installed in the "My Pictures" folder for storing your webcam snapshots, then a folder in the "Movies" library for a similar function. There is also a sub folder that is placed in the user profile area that stores your user information (I assume) So, while installing these drivers and trying to get them to work again my machine froze up mid-install and demanded a reboot. Upon reboot the user profile would not let me login, then when I rebooted once more to attempt to fix it, the boot file was destroyed. So, in goes the recovery disc, boot from CD and fixed the boot.ini file. Finally gain access to the windows logon and still the problem remains. It took hours to figure this whole thing out. booted into safe mode, deleted the improper SID (SP?) for the users that had somehow been created and ended up just having to use a restore point to undo all the changes. Long story short, I got it working and now the file contents are all wonky.
Now, seeing as I used a restore point to fix the issues, I don't see how the logitech install could have been the culprit, but all of my pictures are gone. I have searched the machine, used a file recovery service, looked all over and now I am coming here.Steps taken to find pictures: File recovery, Showing hidden files, searching all files, Ensuring that the user profiles had not been damaged, lots of google searches, you name it.I did notice, however, that there were hidden files and folders on both my drives that are labeled "pictures", "movies" etc. But I cannot access them. I am on an administrator account, I attempted to change the file permissions using the properties interface of the folders and do not have access, even tried the takedown command on them, but I am not using FAT. I simply have no idea what to do now.
Another thing of note: I use my XBOX 360 to wireless stream content from my machine to the Televisions in my home. I notice that the pictures all made it to the Console, and are viewable- but it seems as if the XBOX has created another User profile that I have no access to and moved the items in question there. All in all this has been very perplexing, and I know the pictures are there, somewhere, and have not been deleted- I just have trouble wrapping my head around what user profile they may be in and how to gain access to that folder.
Specs: MS Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1, AMD Athlon II X2 245 Regor 45nm Technology, Mobo: ASRock M3A770DE, AMD Radeon HD 6800.
I also have Hijackthis reports and have run full anti-virus and anti spyware on the machine several times.

How can I quickly delete the content.ie5 folder? I've tried just deleting the folders(8) within the file but it takes forever and freezes up (right clicking & deleting). I tried through cmd prompt, but it still takes a long time. Is there a cmd prompt that'll just delete the file as a whole...I think I used something like /d and tried to do an individual folder and it took a while and I gave up...this was about 2 months ago. I saw a new cmd command rmdir /s...I don't know know if it's quicker or not. Is there a program I can download. And I right clicked and clicked on properties to see how big the file is and it's 85gb. I have screenshots and need a quick solution. It takes forever to do a virus scan, because it keeps getting hung up in the content.ie5 folder. And a couple of months ago...I found a virus/adware in those folders.

but I've lost the content in the database file of my notes in Sticky Notes 7. !
Is there a possible way to recover this? I have 8 database files, which all containing almost the same content.
I think the problem is because i have stored the database file in Google Drive, and i did not activate the synchronizing option in Sticky Notes 7. So when i was editing on my workstation computer, and came home to my laptop. The content was still the same. To day, when i was going to my workstation computer, it is the same content as my laptop. The content which I've been written last week is totally gone!
I've tried in the recycle bin function in Sticky Notes 7, but there was nothing. I know I've done some stupid things. Cause i didn't active the sync.
Also, when i want new content in my note, i just delete the existing content, and add some new. I'm not saving the database files in weeks, or months or so on (to keep control over the files) I will do that in the future!

I have two computers both wirelessly connected via a Linksys WAG160N, one is a desktop, the other is a laptop.. Ultimately the desktop is pretty much a server with HDD storage/printer etc..
Now when I restart my computers/delete my adapters and let them reinstall I can usually connect my computers to one another and share files, however thats really about the only way to do it.. if I leave my computers on for 4 hours and come back they usually will lose connection.
What have I done/tried:
disabled ipv6
reset router
formatting
joining homegroup
wired/wireless connections
This problem is VERY frustrating, I just want to do simple file sharing and its turning out to be quite a problem.. ALSO when I do see my desktop from my laptop I cant access the hard drive I shared, only folders ive shared inside it.. I want to be able to share the HDD as a whole.. I've added access to everyone with full control, but it still doesnt work.
Please help, I would like to use my desktop as a server for my laptop/xbox but its turning out to be quite annoying.

I'm looking for the best way to have the option of searching all files that I specify, regardless of indexing or file extension or anything, for file contents. I know this will be slow - that's fine. I understand the indexing, limited extensions, etc... are all meant to speed up the search, which is great for most usage, but sometimes it just doesn't do what I need.

It seems that the search functionality in Windows 7 cannot be relied upon. For example, I have a folder with around 2000 files. Search indexing has been enabled for this folder for about 12 months, yet when I try a simple filename search it fails to locate files that I know exist. In explorer, I click in the search box and type "glebe" and hit enter. I know that there are seven filenames beginning with "glebe", plus two other filenames that contain the word "glebe". All files are more than six months old, and thus have had plenty of time to be indexed. It only finds two of the seven filenames beginning with "glebe", and none of the filenames containing "glebe". There does not appear to be any special feature of those two files that differentiates them from the others.
In addition, if I created a file a few hours ago and then try to locate it, there does not appear to be any guarantee that the file will be found. Thus the search is of no use at all; if I can't be certain that every file is found every time I search, I can't be certain that I'm not corrupting my data when I manipulate the files that the search does find because I may be leaving files unedited that must be edited. As the delay between a file being created, renamed or deleted and that change being indexed cannot be predicted by the user, even if the index did work correctly, I cannot be sure of how long to wait before the results become reliable. Therefore, even if the search system could be relied upon to deliver the correct results, this undeterminable delay renders it unusable.
I have tried reindexing the folder, which does not fix the problem but does provide a set of search results that are different, yet equally unreliable. I have tried this on several hundred computers running Windows 7 with identical resultsdditionally, the indexing service causes my computer to grind the hard disk for a large periods at random intervals, making my work inefficient. If I want to search for a file I am happy for the hard disk to be accessed to the extent that the file is located, but I don't want my ability to work efficiently to be impeded by indexing millions of files that I'm statistically unlikely to ever search for.

I have followed the instructions to search for files in Windows 7 but have found the process very slow and the results bring up lots of irrelevant files. Find a file or folder. By comparison the search companion on XP was much faster and got more relevant results based on file name. If that didn't work there was the option of searching for text within the file. For example I know inside a folder there is a sub folder with the file I am looking for and I know part of the name. Is there a way to make Win 7 search for results based only on the file name? In most cases that would be a lot simpler. Otherwise win 7 will look in the contents of the file which is a time waster.

I'm not computer savvy but I can follow directions pretty well. Recently, I've discovered I cannot open any Zip files from my computer. I get an Adobe Acrobat error message saying I cannot open file because it is either not supported or file is damaged. This message comes up every time I try to open a zip file, no matter the source. I suspect it may be a default association problem based on the research I have done but I don't know how to correct the issue. As I said, I don't know a lot about operating systems.

I have this absolute annoying issue with my Windows 7 Home Premium. If I leave my computer on for roughly an hour I will go and attempt to either rename a file or search a file in the normal os search menu. The second I type one letter the os locks up and I am forced to end the explorer.exe process. I have recently reformatted my computer no more than 4 months ago and prior to that I was given the same problem. I heard and read in select online searches this has to do with shell extensions of some sort
