Windows 7 Search Results / How To Sort By Date By Default
Dec 14, 2012Something about Windows 7 that is very frustrating is that when I want to do a global search of my entire hard drive, and I type something in the search box that appears above Start logo when you click on it, it shows the results in a new window sorted by, according to Microsoft, relevance. Since I have a lot of data on my hard drive, these searches take a long time, around 2 minutes. I always need these search results to be sorted by date, so I then have to click on the "date received" column header to re-sort by date, which takes another 2 minutes or so.I really need these search results to sort by date, every time, by default, which will cut my searching time in half. There does not appear to be a setting for changing the default search results order for these types of searches (searches using the global search box above the Start logo).

Oct 20, 2011"date modified" field does not update when files are replaced in a zip folder while running Windows 7 64-bit.
Data files are stored in zip files and utilized daily. At the days end the files are replaced with the most current revision. The updated file displays the correct "date modified", however when the filed is transfered into the zip file, the "date modified" displayed within the zip file does not update.
I don't have this problem with Windows XP or 2000. Is there some hidden setting that is needed for Windows 7 to recognize file modification dates just as every version prior?
It becomes frustrating that Microsoft continues to add nice new fancy operating features, but yet continuously fails to ensure the basic functions are maintained.

Feb 28, 2011Windows 7 64 bit SP1 - Clean Install. I have found an incredibly annoying problem. I have external USB drives on my laptop, both esata and USB 3. I store a lot of HD video clips that I take on them. It is very important that I set the sort order to Date Created (due to the naming convention on my camcorder). Before doing a clean install from Windows 7 64bit to Windows 7 SP1 64bit, if I changed the order in explorer it quickly changed and then remembered the sort order, so next time I went into the folder on my external drive the files were in the correct order.
Now, whenever I go into the folder it takes up to 5 minutes to sort the files (there are some 4000 files in the folder). If I go to other folder on my laptop, then back to that folder, it takes another 5 minutes to sort them again! At the moment I am tempted to go back to pre-SP1. I have taken the external drive to another laptop i have with SP1 on it, and it does the same thing. I can't wait around for windows to re-order my files whenever I go into that folder, especially as it takes such a long time.

Dec 31, 2011It seems that the search functionality in Windows 7 cannot be relied upon. For example, I have a folder with around 2000 files. Search indexing has been enabled for this folder for about 12 months, yet when I try a simple filename search it fails to locate files that I know exist. In explorer, I click in the search box and type "glebe" and hit enter. I know that there are seven filenames beginning with "glebe", plus two other filenames that contain the word "glebe". All files are more than six months old, and thus have had plenty of time to be indexed. It only finds two of the seven filenames beginning with "glebe", and none of the filenames containing "glebe". There does not appear to be any special feature of those two files that differentiates them from the others.
In addition, if I created a file a few hours ago and then try to locate it, there does not appear to be any guarantee that the file will be found. Thus the search is of no use at all; if I can't be certain that every file is found every time I search, I can't be certain that I'm not corrupting my data when I manipulate the files that the search does find because I may be leaving files unedited that must be edited. As the delay between a file being created, renamed or deleted and that change being indexed cannot be predicted by the user, even if the index did work correctly, I cannot be sure of how long to wait before the results become reliable. Therefore, even if the search system could be relied upon to deliver the correct results, this undeterminable delay renders it unusable.
I have tried reindexing the folder, which does not fix the problem but does provide a set of search results that are different, yet equally unreliable. I have tried this on several hundred computers running Windows 7 with identical resultsdditionally, the indexing service causes my computer to grind the hard disk for a large periods at random intervals, making my work inefficient. If I want to search for a file I am happy for the hard disk to be accessed to the extent that the file is located, but I don't want my ability to work efficiently to be impeded by indexing millions of files that I'm statistically unlikely to ever search for.

May 29, 2012I have followed the instructions to search for files in Windows 7 but have found the process very slow and the results bring up lots of irrelevant files. Find a file or folder. By comparison the search companion on XP was much faster and got more relevant results based on file name. If that didn't work there was the option of searching for text within the file. For example I know inside a folder there is a sub folder with the file I am looking for and I know part of the name. Is there a way to make Win 7 search for results based only on the file name? In most cases that would be a lot simpler. Otherwise win 7 will look in the contents of the file which is a time waster.

Jan 16, 2011it seems to me that Windows 7 search only works for arguments which occur in the front part of a long filename (less than 100 char's total without path).
Whenever I look for a string in the SAME filename that occurs at the end of the filename, Windows 7 search desn't seem to find anything.

When I try to open the search result in any media player, it says the file could not be found.I already restarted my system, but both search engines still say the file exists. Nov 18, 2012As im having a clearout and tidying up storage folders prior to new back ups - is there a way in Win Explorer or a third party utility to see total size of a folder so when i look at a list of HDD contents i can see which is using up most disk space? each folder may have sub folders as well as files, but apart from right click to Properties i would like a quick quick way of viewing folder size. or even sorting by size rather than folder name. The Size column after Date Modified and then Type isnt wont show a total size. Surely theres a way of Windows or a utility that can show the total size of a folder??I can then quickly go to a folder which has a large content and see if i can delete some of its contents. Folders like "Photos" is obviously going to be large, but others arent!Also as i still get confused about the way WIN Backup works im seriously considering Acronis so as to have incremental backups.
