Been fooling about with customizations for Windows 7 and just tried 'Classic Start Menu' from The Code Project at: Code: [URL]. The final version is actually here: Code: [URL] No trouble with the app itself, it works a treat, and delivers a classic XP-type Start Menu in Windows 7. My question concerns the very useful 'Search Programs and Files' facility that opens when the regular Start button is clicked. When Classic Start Menu is installed, this option is missing. If this search box can still be accessed when Classic Start Menu is in place? I'd ask on the Source Forge forum but I'm having trouble logging in there. BTW, one interesting tip that I've learned during this 'crusade' is that the Search Programs and Files boxmenu pops up when the Windows key is clicked.

This subject might have been dealt with many times in this forum. I did search for posts before this, but I didn't find actually what I was looking for as regards the windows search.I have Windows 7 Pro x64, I use a limited user (and another one with administrator privileges, obviously). When I try to search for programs using the start menu search (from all programs section), there aren't any results. For instance, I try to search for HTC Sync, which I can see in "All programs", but it doesn't show up. On the other hand, a program like Firefox, that I can find, even though I don't see any entries of Firefox in "All programs"(!). And I don't know why.
It seems rather messed up, because some entries within the start menu are empty, even though the programs are installed. For instance, Nero 7 folder is there, but it's empty. However, HTC Sync is in "All programs", but I still can't find in start menu search.Another example would be Outlook. When I search for it, it does show me "outlook" within the "Programs" section, and not "Microsoft Outlook 2010" as I am positive it should have. This tells me that it finds "outlook" somewhere else, and I can't figure out where. This problem is partially solved by pining shortcuts to Start Menu, which of course is not a viable solution, because I should pin all programs there and the start menu would brim with shortcuts.

Windows 7 Ultimate, upgrade install from Vista. Toshiba Satellite laptop. I searched for this both in Google and on this forum, can't find anything. I can type into the search/run box in the start menu, but nothing happens when I do. No search items come up; if I type in a program name, I can't make it run by hitting enter. If I open a command prompt I can run anything I want from there. This happened several weeks after the upgrade, it was working fine. I had to clean several virus infections, so my thinking is that something got removed from the registry that shouldn't have. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance, forums like this have been a lifesaver for me more than once. I rarely have to post, I can usually find my problem, but this one seems to be a bit odd. Just remembered the other odd thing that happened, seemingly along with the above: my "printers and devices" window is empty. The devices are there, and work, but they're not listed in the window. As far as I know, this happened around the same time the other issue did. I did find some mention of this problem on the net, but none of the fixes worked for me. Don't know if it's relevant or not, but better too much info than not enough.

I've been using Win 7 x64 for about a month and a half, and up until about a week ago, it was fine. But suddenly, when I open the start menu and start typing the name of a program, it takes a really long time to search for the results. They used to start showing up as I was typing. Now for example, if i type in 'calculator' it takes about 20-30 seconds before anything appears. When I watch task manager as i type, the cpu usage goes up to 50%, one entire core! I fiddeled with the indexing so it was only indexing the Start Menu directory and the Users directory, as well as rebuilding the index a few times. This happened suddenly as well: there was no slow degredationnote: other than this, performance of windows and other apps is excellent. Also: I've definitely installed a lot of software in the last few weeks, but no new hardware.

A few days ago the search function in the Start Menu stopped working. Following instructions on a post on this site, I changed the value of an HKEY (can't recall which one any more) and it started working again. However, the results are now always incomplete. For example, I might type "ABC .xls" in the Start Menu bar to search for an Excel file called ABC. The immediate search results would be empty. However, if I click "See More Results", a window opens in Explorer and the search returns a hit.Because the search function in Explorer works fine, I think the indexing function is working properly. However, I rebuilt it anyway and the results are the same. why the search in the Start Menu produces incomplete results

This is really strange.. i have noticed for a few days that the search in the star menu isn't working... i shrugged this off the last few times because i didn't really need it(just being lazy trying to find a program)... but today... i typed run... and instead of finding run like normal it shows a few options "programs", "control panel", "documents", and "files" now these all have blank icons and when i click on programs(the obvious selection) i get a pop up from windows security that says"These files can't be openedYour Internet Security settings prevented one or more files from being opened."and in "show details"... "Programs"

I want to customize my start menu search. In Vista, I just told the indexing service to search only in the start menu folder, and monitored the folder myself (added and removed shortcuts as I wish). It was great, and it replaced Launchy very comfortably. I made shortcuts to folder locations on my computer for very quick access (Start+mus+enter would open my music folder, etc.)
In Windows 7, the shortcuts to folders will fall under the "files" category (instead of the programs category), which takes about 4-5 seconds just to show up, even though my whole index (just the start menu folder) is only 73 items (shortcuts), and pressing enter would open up the 'See more results', instead of the first entry. Basically, the start search looks at program shortcuts first, and considers other shortcuts to be normal files. Is there anyway to make the start search consider all shortcuts like program shortcuts?
BTW, if anyone can tell me why I can't edit my sig with WYSIWYG or with tags (as you could in Vistax64 forums), I'd appreciate it a lot.

Just recently I have found that typing a program name into the start menu no longer returns the programs that match. I tried to install a hotfix which didn't work (update not applicable to my computer). I've seen other posts about deleting a registry key, but I don't have that registry key in the first place. I've also rebuilt the search index with no success

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 32-Bit. For other system specs I have added them to my profile.
When I open the start menu whether it be with the windows key or mouse click a right click menu pops up and appears to be right clicked inside the search bar, I tested this by copying some text and clicking paste on the auto right click menu.
It stays there until I click something but will come back within 1 second or until I stop holding the mouse button.

I go onto start menu and click on pictures or right click and open, there is a momentary attempt to open but then nothing.I used to be able to click on and get the pictures this way.To get pictures I have to go into my documents and open the left hand list under Libraries.I then click onto pictures, nothing happens until I right click and expand and there is "my pictures" to open up. I have sent" my pictures shortcut "to my desktop as an Icon as a quick way of opening up.When I scan a photo it used to copy it and send it quickly to ( I think Pictures), from here I would always send to my documents as I preferred this.I have noticed that now when finishing the scan and me sending it to file, "the sending" takes time with the words "searching"coming up, before sending the photo on its way.
(1)So is this something to do with Pictures not opening up now on start menu regarding time taken on sending scanned picture, has pictures gone to a different place?
(2)Is it because I am always sending picture to my documents, so it has decided not to open pictures on start menu. ( note I like to tweek under Paint and Paint net via documents)
(3)I have right clicked on start menu into start menu tab under customise it is checked" as display as a link".
Privacy is checked as "Store & display recently opened programs in start menu" &Store & display recently opened items in the Start menu & task bar.

I noticed an update was available for windows, or maybe it already updated. But when I tried to click on the little flag in the task bar it said it could not connect to windows server. I tried restarting my computer and thats when everything went crazy. The brightness automatically lowers, it looks like it is in classic mode, no sound, cannot use usb, nothing will open it shows it is trying but thats all. I dont know what I did or what happened. I tried to upgrade it to windows 7 ultimate but i am getting an error with that. If I buy the windows 8 upgrade would that work and fix the problems or would I need to reformat the hard drive and completely reinstall windows.

I purchased Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit about a year ago and finally decided to install it on one of my systems. It installed without any problems however, when I tried to set it up for the classic view, (which is the way I like to see my files and folders,) I couldn't find the way to set the classic view up.Then, I tried to install files into a game I installed but Windows 7 would only let me install them alphabetically and I was not able to install them randomly. Is there a way, and how do I set Windows 7 up to look the way I want it too and install the files the way I want them to install?

With Vista I became a big fan of the search capacity into the "start menu - all programs" when I need to launch a software.
But in Seven (currently using 7000 x64) I'm a little bit disappointed about some strange thing in there.
I've got 2 softwares that I use often:
- Mediacoder (for encoding video files)
- M.Play Home center (for my IR module and remote control)
For the first of this two I start to type: M E D I A ... But as long as I do not type MEDIAC (and more) the only choice Seven propose to me is Mediaplayer and MediaCenter.
For M.Play I need to type M.Play H without what it still propose to me MediaCenter and Mediaplayer.. and only this 2 !!
I really do not understand why typing M.P give me the only choise of WMP and WMC ! It should display M.Play Home Center. As it should display Mediacoder when I start to type Media.
And Under Vista it give to you the most used answer. If you have multiple possibility, the first on the list will be the one you often chose.
In Seven, the choise is WMP and WMC.. until you type enough letter which became quickly annoying. This thing is supposed to make faster the way of launching apps... but not in Seven
Does your Seven work like that ?
