View 6 RepliesSo I just did a fresh install of windows 7 and now all of the sudden the search function, as far as I can tell, does not work. At all. I tell it to search for a simple file I KNOW is there and it does not bring it up. It brings up nothing. Infact it wont find anything on my computer at all. Seems 100% useless. So whats up with that? I never had issues with Windows search before, not with Vista, XP, or any other. is there a 3rd party search engine I can use to find stuff on my computer? I have almost 3TB of stuff, I can rarely remember where I have stored every single thing I would use.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I type a search into either the start menu or a folder search or anywhere it fails to find files. I tried re-indexing, but it actually reduced my index from ~3500 to 279 files. I don't understand why it won't find anything.I transferred a lot of folders from my old computer (Vista) to this one via my external hard drive. It will not find any files from those folders. For example, I have MS Word documents from school and even if I open the exact folder its in and search the exact name it won't find any results.
I have an extensive library of public domain books in various folders but I used the search to find things. Now, even if I'm in the exact folder a file is in it won't find it. For example, if a file is named "JJ Blunt, Undesigned Coincidences" and I search that exact phrase while looking at the file in a folder, it will say no results found. If I search "Blunt" or "JJ" the same thing happens.The only thing that has done anything is if I right click an individual file, go to properties, go to details, tell it to remove all personal information, and then it will index and search for it. But I have literally 10s of 1000s of files I want to search, and to do this manually would take at least a full day. Is there any way to make this work?Even more startling, documents I've made with this computer and put into folders from my old computer to maintain my sorting system will not show up either. So the only files it will find are those in folders I've made on this computer and have files made on this computer. Not a single other file will be found.

After doing a clean install but saving files in 'Windows.old' Wingdings 2 & Wingdings 3 fonts have disappeared. They aren't in the the fonts folder and I need them. PC started acting inappropriately during searches. Press Window Key, press W key to get Wordpad and it would show things like Calculator, VLC Player or Irfanview. Or press Window Key, press I for Internet Explorer and it shows Notepad, Paint or Word.
how do I:
a) add search function to start menu in classic view
b) get out of classic view and revert to win7 view?
c) find restore to do b)?

I have Windows 7 Ultimate x64, the drives are indexed and I have all folder search options set to "Always search file names and contents" and "Include system directories" and "include compressed files" but search is not finding content I know to be present.
For example text in Word Docs and content in Zip files are often not found, usually not. How do I set up Search so it actually searches "within contents" like it does in XP, which may be slower but at least it works.
Outlook 2007 Task search versus Windows7 computer wide search.
I enter the same keyword (one of the words contained within the title of a completed task) in the Outlook Task search box as I do the Windows 7 orb 'search programs and files.' The Windows 7 search returns the correct search result (along with a lot other results having the same keyword) practically immediately whereas Outlook is still searching...and searching.
If I have index options set to include the C: drive and Outlook, what's going on with Outlook?
some specifics and pinpoint the differences (or maybe a good website) that would pinpoint the differences between the Windows 7 search and the outlook 2007 search? I know the outlook search searches through email but are there other difference I am overlooking between the two?

It is fixed now, but the other issues I was having at the same time was not being able to view indexed files through the "search programs and files" and "windows explorer search" box. The screen goes blank or does not produce any results. Also, one of my downloaded software disk programs will not open--error. This particular program, Logos Bible software, index its files quite often. Even when I am not using the program. I also cannot change my desktop background to any picture except solid colors. I think my laptop has a corrupted file somewhere, or it is infected with malware.

The problem is similar to the one I described previously (here: Windows could not start the Windows Search service on Local Computer)
...namely, I am running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and have experienced the same error message ( windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX', where XXX is my search query) when attempting to initiate a search via the Windows start menu search box. Unfortunately, my previously proposed solution (of removing a network search location from Windows Search Index list) does not resolve it.....and so finally I resorted to using Samhrutha's proposed solution of modifying the registry to reset Windows Search back to default (which DID work...but ended up removing all the search index customizations I had made).
However, when I then modify the search indexing options to include indexing of my C: drive, I get the "windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error message.
If I then uncheck the C: drive box in the search in the search indexing options, the error message does not occur....so I then went thru a tedious process of trying to identify which folders on my C drive were causing the issue, and from what I am able to tell, the "windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error message seems to always occur when the indexing options include at least one folder WHICH IS OWNED by TRUSTED INSTALLER (e.g., program files folder, program files (x86), c:, etc.). This wasn't a problem previously, so my guess is that MS Update recently (e.g., w/in the last few months) changed some security setting which now prevents Windows Search from being able to index/access folders owned by TRUSTED INSTALLER, resulting in the "windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error message.
i stupidly downloaded imesh and my mcaffee detected the trojan but it doesnt detect it as a threat which is so confusing because isnt mcafee is suppost to be a security software...? anyway i downloaded other softwares like spybot, super anti spyware emisoft, avg, malwarebytes and all kinds of other ones but they dont detect anyting! i finally downloaded trojan remover 6.8.2 and it renamed the file or quarantied it or something and i shred those but how am i sure that its wiped off my pc? i shred some files named imesh and idk what else but i just want to make sure my computer is safe!

View 4 Replies View Relatedi built my new pc a couple of weeks ago, with mostly new parts (kept my psu and hdd). my pc keeps on completely freezing (no audio, can't move the mouse), forcing me to force shutdown and turn it back on again. sometimes after turning it off it works fine, other times it freezes again at any point during startup (once during bios, sometimes during windows setup, and sometimes minutes after it is fully started). the problem is, this freezing happens randomly. so far it's occurred while the system was idle, while watching a Internet video, and while opening google chrome. what is weird is how it rarely happens during gaming. i played 6 hours straight of bad company 2 on max settings with no problems. i've also played about 10 hours of the witcher this week and have only had it freeze once. sometimes the pc will freeze multiple times in a day, and sometimes it will only freeze a few times a week.i've run memtest 86 and memtest86+ when i initally bought the computer, and it found no problems. i ran these tests again two days ago and it still found no problems. i also ran a couple of stress tests (using prime96) and the pc never crashed when it was under full load. when i use speedfan, my system is normally 29c, my cpu is 36c, my video card is 40c, and the "core" is 35c. the only thing it has a problem with is something called "aux" which changes from anywhere between 40c and 130c. i read on the internet that it shouldn't matter, but... that's what it is.i've also checked the error logs, and so far i can't really find anything that corresponds to the times that is freezing. i've also ran my computer with all the startup items turned off, but it also froze that way too.
i've messed with ram timings, and gskill says they should be set to 9-9-9-24-2n with a voltage of 1.5. i've done that in the mobo, with the exception of "2n" which i don't really understand.at the recommendation of someone else, i've started running my pc with only one stick of ram at a time. i just tried the first stick yesterday in the first slot, and it froze at the very end of the day (after i had already played the witcher and watched a movie on it).it was suggested to me that i run memtest with one stick in it at a time (which i haven't done yet). is that really necessary? i was under the impression that memtest simply found errors on all the sticks, if there were any.finally, as just a side note, i built my brother a pc very similar to mine (everything except the case and the hdd are the same) and he has had no problems with his yet, telling me that everything is physically compatible and that the memory timings must be right.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI upgraded a Win7 Professional 64 bit system to Ultimate, then downloaded Language Packs in Chinese and Japanese. Now I am able to switch between Display Languages as expected. But after my last return from Japanese as Display Language to English, I find that Windows Explorer shows date information in Japanese, and IE uses Japanese as its language. Yet the Desktop icons have English legends, and the Start menu is in English. So there is a mixture of languages. Is there a way to eliminate Japanese completely? Should I uninstall the Language Packs?

Sometimes I can refresh the page and it will open. I keep the cookies along with defragging on a regular basis. After clearing cookies I can sometime reboot and the websites will load ok. Also sometimes the page may continue to load and sometime it will stop loading and only the website header will appear. Some days I can go all day and all website will load ok.

View 2 Replies View Relatedfrom a Pentium D 2.8Ghz, upgraded that to C2D 2.9Ghz. and from a 8600GT xxx edition 256mb ddr3 I updgraded to a 9800gt 1gb ddr3now my PC shuts completely down without errors, warnings, blue screens nothing, just completely shutdowns like if there was a power outage.As per the manual the vid card requieres a psu of min 400W, I have a 680W PSU unit.Computer starts fine, but I noticed that if I try to use something that uses heavy graphics thats when the shutdown occurs., two examples:1. I tried refreshing the windows experience index, and it shuts down right in the middle during a direct 3d ALU test, everytime..2. tried loading BFBC2 and shuts down when trying to enter a multiplaye server.
this leads me to believe it might have something to do with either a faulty PSU unit, or faulty Vid Card (doubts on the latter).As for Drivers I uninstalled and reinstalled everthing twice now and even resintalled Direct X just in case.Although it seems I have the possible problem pinned down I would still like to read your comments and suggestions...maybe I missed something ?[CODE]
Just got a new HP Pavilion Notebook. I didn't like using the touchpad, so I plugged in a mouse.Then, I went to the Control Panel and TRIED to disable the touchpad. The mouse works great, but the touchpad keeps enabling itself again.It really gets ugly when I'm using the mouse and stop to type something in and the weight of my hands causes the screen zoom to adjust and jump.Is there any way to completely disable the touchpad until I really want to use it?
