Edit / Rename Boot Menu Entries And Hide Other Windows 7 Partitions?

Sep 20, 2010

On my computer I have 3 primary partitions:

1. "System reserve" which contains e.g.the Bootmamanger and MBR
2. First Win 7 installation ("main")
3. Second Win 7 installation ("reserve")

When I boot now at first the Bootmanager on the first primary partition is called/started which in turn starts the boot menu. In the boot menu there are currently two entries:

Windows 7
Windows 7

So I cannot distinguish between the "main" and the "reserve" Win 7 installation. How exactly can I modify/rename the two "Windows 7" entries in boot menu? After selecting and booting the actual Windows 7 installation the other Windows 7 installation is visible as a separate partition in WinExplorer:

C: Running Windows 7
D: DVD drive
E: Other (non-booted) Windows 7

How can I automatically hide the other Windows 7 installation? The drive E: should be available e.g. for USB sticks or network drives.

Unable To Rename Users Folder

Sep 22, 2012

I have migrated my Windows 7 OS to a SSD, but my Users folder is too large to migrate. I am going to set a junction between C:Users on my SSD and F:Users on the HDD where my OS was originally. The instructions I have read indicate that I need to rename the C:Users folder in order to set the junction, since it will not work if there is still a folder named C:Users. However, there is no ""Rename" option available when I right-click on C:Users. In fact, several of the folders in the root directory of C: have no "Rename" option.

I right click and attempt to rename it with a different file extension, but the 'Rename' box doesn't show up like I believe it should and the file name changes without the warning. I need to do this for the shortcut I've created, not the file on the USB.I have 'Hide extensions for known file types' unchecked and 'Display the full path in the title bar' checked, as I believe they should be.

C: Drive Renamed, Can't Rename It To Anything Else

My C: drive was renamed to "Alcatel PC Suite" which is the name of the software I have for my cell phone. When I right click to rename it, I can type a new name in, I can click ok, it asks for permission and I can also click ok. Im an admin and the only user for the newly installed OS. After I give it permission, it still says the old name in My Computer. However when I go to properties of my C: drive, under the general tab, it has the new name listed.

Rename Hard Drive

Apr 1, 2009

This is a little tip I learned many moons ago...

Right click on your "C" drive and select properties (you can select rename instead)

In the Name box give it a name. (Example: Windows 7-64)

The point of naming your "C" drive?
If you dual boot you will always know what is on that drive so you'll not make a mistake and format it :-) If you boot from a VHD, makes it nice to know at a glance which drive is the host "C" drive If you use Diskpart to work with a drive you can use the command: list volume and the name will be shown under the label column (again helps you avoid a mistake)

This tip of renaming is also good with removable USB drives. (I like to rename them by Brandname) This name stays even if you remove the device, when you plug it back in the name shows with the drive letter that windows assigns (helps me in my feeble mindlessness)

The only type of physical drive you can't rename that I know of is CD/DVD drives

Unable To Install Windows 7 - Dynamic Partitions?

Apr 10, 2011

Damn Windows Update started installing a video card driver. My system is a Dell Vostro 430 and has an ATI HD 4350 (I think), but however, for some stupid reason it can only work with Dell's video driver. So when Windows Update installed the official driver for me, by the time I realised what it was doing it was too late. My screens went black; an incompatible driver screwed everything up.

Worse yet, it was still installing updates, so I was scared to turn my computer off in case it would create major problems. After waiting for four hours I decided it was time to pull the plug. After restarting the computer, it kept rebooting when it started loading Windows 7, and then soon after it didn't even get that far; it told me there was no compatible SATA device found and it refused to boot full stop. Trust this to happen at assignment hand-in week. I've got so much work to do.

I went to the library and downloaded an Ubuntu ISO and burned it to disc. I also got a legit ISO (I'm a student and use MSDN) of Windows 7 x86, since Windows 7 x64 had its problems with the software I use for my course. First of all I backed up all of my uni work using Ubuntu as a live CD, which worked okay. I moved other important data from my Windows (main) partition to my other partitions (Music, Games, TV/Films, etc) since I knew I was going to be formatting my system partition for a reinstallation.

I have two HDs installed. A 500GB one and a 1.5TB one. The drives seem to still be working since I could access them in Ubuntu. However, most of the partitions were formatted as dynamic partitions, not basic. It seemed that the partitions on my 500GB drive were basic, whereas the ones on my 1.5TB were dynamic. This is why it disallowed me to install Windows 7 on the 1.5TB drive. (It dislikes dynamic partitions for whatever reason.) However, I formatted the original basic system partition and started installing Windows 7 x86 on it. It got to 100% and was finalising installation, until it halted, told me the installation had failed, and that I'd need to restart and try again. Every time I have tried, it has failed at that point.

I don't know what the heck to do. I can't remove the partitions that exist because they contain a lot of data that I really want. I also have no means of backing up the data. I have no DVD discs left (and it would take a damn lot to back up hundreds of gigs), and no external HDs. Just for the sake of trying it out, I tried installing 7 x64 and got the same error, so I don't think it's x86-specific.

Moved Partitions - Unable To Boot Windows 7?

Jun 2, 2010

I have an Acer Aspire 1810TZ with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. The HDD is 160GB.Yesterday I moved (without resizing!) both the 100MB system reserved partition and my 40GB C: partition towards the "beginning" of the HDD for the purpose of creating an unallocated space of some 110GB towards the "end" of the HDD. (The C: partition had previously been shrunk using Win7 disk management and the system worked fine after reboot prior to partition move).llowing the partition move I can however not boot into Windows anymore. Windows boot manager gives the following info:Status: 0xc0000225Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessibleThe boot manager also suggests I reinstall Windows, but of course the restore and rescue DVDs I burned based on Acer's eRecovery tool does not work.

Windows 7 Clobbers File-names Copied To A NAS Drive?

Aug 22, 2010

My setup: Windows 7 Pro (locale: Polish) and a NAS drive (D-Link DNS-323) attached via a router. Just recently upgraded from XP to 7. The NAS drive reports an NTFS partition. The problem I've just discovered: when copying files to the NAS drive, if a filename contains certain characters, such as curly quotes, angle quotes, bullet characters, subscript characters, em-dash etc., only the short 8.3 filename gets copied to the NAS drive.(I would not sweat it if the troublesome characters just got dropped, but what happens is that meaningful filenames are replaced with gibberish as above.)I use the NAS drive as a backup/mirror location for the local drives, so this is a big issue, since my backups are now severely clobbered. I discovered the problem while testing my backup regime, then found out the filename change occurs no matter how the files are copied - whether it's the backup application, a file manager or just Windows Explorer. And (of course) the problem did not occur when I was running XP, and nothing on the NAS drive changed since I installed 7 a week ago. Files that were previously copied onto the NAS drive (under XP) still show up fine, which tells me that 7 is actively interfering with the copy operations.

Can't Delete Or Rename Files On External Hard Drive

I just figured out that I can't delete files from my external hard drive. It's WD Elements 320GB. Only thing I did before this occured is that I converted file system from FAT32 to NTFS via command in cmd prompt, but I'm not sure if that showed up after that. So, I don't have "delete" or "rename" commands on right click. Backup of all files is a no go since I don't have so much free space atm. I use my user account which is also admin account.

Deleted Partitions On Hard Drive

Oct 30, 2012

Okay, so I go to do a fresh install of Windows 7 on my machine as I have sveral times. I booted from the Win 7 cd and it came to the hard drive selection page. Here's where the trouble started. I have two identical 2TB hard drives and a 3TB drive in my machine. My gut told me to unhook my 2TB drive that I use for photos and music, the other 2TB is my data (C) drive. I said to myself, "Self, you have done this so many times, no problem". Well, problem. It deleted the partitions on my data drive. It never formatted the drive though. After the first reboot, my (C) drive booted and I knew that I was in a heap of trouble.

Changing Drive Letters - Four Partitions

Oct 31, 2009

I have two HDs; on the first one (80 GBs), I have four partitions, with XP on C: (and this is the boot drive), then D:, E:, and finally Vista on F:. I have another HD, a 1 TB one, which I use for storage, and I have made a lot of partitions on it, generally about 100 GB each. When I ran the setup for 7, I selected a partition on the second drive which was labelled S:. After 7 installed, and I opened My Computer, I saw that everything was messed up, and 7 was now on C:.

I know it doesn't mean it is physically on C:, it is still on the same partition of the second HD where I installed it, but it shows its partition as C:. I used Computer Management to change most of the drive letters so that they appear as they do in XP, but every time I try to change the drive letter of 7 from C: to S:, it gives an error, something about not allowed to change drive letter of system disk which has the pagefile.

So is it at all possible to force change the drive letters so that 7 is shown on S: and XP on C:. I opened C: (the 7 installation) and found many text files in system folders and program files which point to locations on C:, so if I force a change from C: to S:, what happens to all of these - do they automatically change their paths to S:, or does the whole thing just go phut!

I had the same problem when I installed Vista, but I didn't use it all that much, and so I didn't do anything about it, but I like 7, and unlike Vista which everyone said was an intermediate product until the next version came out, 7 is here to stay. I am ready to do another clean install if there is any way around this problem.
