Can't Change Drive Names
Oct 2, 2009
I have 2 physical HDs and one of them is devided into two drives, so basically I have 3 drives:
C: D: and E;
I want to assign names to each of them and I could only do so to drive C:, but I seem to ran into this message that I need an admisitrative ability while I'm the administrator of this computer.

regarding the contacts being synchronized with Outlook. All my contacts have their first names under 'First Name', but their last names under 'Middle Name'. I want to copy the middle names of everyone to the 'Last Name' box. There are more than 700 contacts and I can't be doing this individually for each contact.

i am selling a laptop to a co-worker but am having troubles changing the user name. This is windows 7 home premium 64 bit. The folders under "users" are the "public" and the my name. I want to change it from my name to their name but it has a lock symbol on the icon and I cannot figure out how to do it. I was able to go into user accounts and change the name there, no problem. But the "users" folder will not change also. How do I do this? I do not want to do a fresh install or anything - this laptop is only one month old but I ended up not liking it. I already installed Abode professional, Office Professional 2010, and a bunch of other software that the buyer is paying me extra for, so doing a clean install would screw that up for them. Is there any way to change the folder name or are they just stuck with it?

how can I assign permission to change file names to a program? If I want to rename a file manually, I am asked to provide administrator permission, if I want a program to rename files, the access is denied.

how to change H_D Names. I know how to do this but my problem is how to prevent existing drive names being re-allocated , usually when I had, say, a USB drive. Is this achieved by allocating these external drives letters towards the end of the alphabet , such as "z", "Y" .. etc ?

My setup: Windows 7 Pro (locale: Polish) and a NAS drive (D-Link DNS-323) attached via a router. Just recently upgraded from XP to 7. The NAS drive reports an NTFS partition. The problem I've just discovered: when copying files to the NAS drive, if a filename contains certain characters, such as curly quotes, angle quotes, bullet characters, subscript characters, em-dash etc., only the short 8.3 filename gets copied to the NAS drive.(I would not sweat it if the troublesome characters just got dropped, but what happens is that meaningful filenames are replaced with gibberish as above.)I use the NAS drive as a backup/mirror location for the local drives, so this is a big issue, since my backups are now severely clobbered. I discovered the problem while testing my backup regime, then found out the filename change occurs no matter how the files are copied - whether it's the backup application, a file manager or just Windows Explorer. And (of course) the problem did not occur when I was running XP, and nothing on the NAS drive changed since I installed 7 a week ago. Files that were previously copied onto the NAS drive (under XP) still show up fine, which tells me that 7 is actively interfering with the copy operations.

The Network Drive volumes do not show up in Windows Explorer using Windows 7. The network drives appear with the assigned drive letter followed by Network Drive, for example, (Q Network Drive I've checked and the volumes are labeled correctly on the servers. Is there a registry entry that needs to be modified in order to correct? The system is a Toshiba R830 laptop running Win 7 64-bit

I have a USB external hard drive that I keep all my documents etc on (had it for years)I upgraded from Vista Home to & Home Premium then had to upgrade recently to Professional to run my Sage. Through all these upgrades my ext. drive ran fine. Occasionally the drvie letter would change if I had something else plugged into the USB, this was always easily corected in disk management by changing the drive path. The connection on the case packed up so I had to get the drive put into a new case, now when I plug it in the drive is assigned G instead of F, I tried to change the drive letter allocation in Disk Management but it won't let me as the program still thinks I have a second ext. hard drive which is labelled F. I suspect this has happened because when the usb connection broke the drive was disconnected suddenly instead of a proper eject. How do I get Disk Management to remove the inactive drive - i can't find any obvious way - eject, delete etc are all missing when I click on tools or tasks.

I deleted my existing OS then created two new partitions on the same drive. Then I installed Vista on one partition and that partition was properly named "c" as ususal. Then I started Windows 7 setup.exe from a different hard drive and let Windows 7 install itself into its own partition. When I got to "My Computer" the Windows 7 partition was labelled as "I" instead of the expected "C" which had never happend before when I did the same thing.
Does anyone know a save way to label the Win 7 drive as "C" while in Windows 7?

I had Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit installed on a partition of my 1TB drive. I recently bought a 240GB SSD and installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit there. I did a completely fresh install, since I needed to move things around on the original partition anyway. So basically, I put all the drives in (which was probably my first mistake) and fired it up and low and behold, it booted immediately from my original drive, despite the fact that I had set the SSD as the first boot option in BIOS. Grr.. Anyway, I ran the setup for Win 7, hoping that would resolve the issue and I now boot (sort of) exclusively from the new SSD and into the new install of Windows.
now that I've moved everything off the original drive that I wanted to keep (onto a 3rd drive) I want to delete the old Windows partition and merge it with some other unused space on that drive but it won't allow me to do that, since the old Windows partition is listed as the System drive, while my new Windows partition is listed as the Boot drive. The other strange issue that I came across... is that I went back into BIOS and removed the option to boot from the old drive completely and then it wouldn't even boot at all.It kept asking me if I wanted to make a floppy disk of the SATA drivers.

When you create a shortcut in Win 7 the name of the shortcut has the word "shortcut" appended to the end of the name.I simply want to change this so the name "shortcut" is in the beginning of the name. (like in earlier versions of Windows i think).I have found instructions online for adjusting the registry to remove the word "shortcut" totally...but i cant see how to just move it to the beginning.

I currently try to sort my lineups (Edit Favorite Lineups). The channel names are displayed but run out to the right (gradient). But if i sort them by name, I am not able to read the names anymore. The gradient will move to the first letter, so that even the first letter is only half displayed.
Does anyone can confirm this or may have a solution?

i'm having a problem not with installing soundpools on my system, but with actually getting all of the samples recognised within the library of magix music maker. i know for a fact that it has something to do with it's inability to pick up on long file names that don't have an underscore for spaces on many of them.i did at one point see a video that explained how to use a program called advanced renamer to actually put the underscore in those filenames, without having to trawl through all of them and manually putting_the_underscores_in_cause_it_would_drive_anybody_barmy (the number of times i just hit the bracket key in that alone was almost enough). so i've tried looking through the forums on the ar website, and i looked for any useful 'how to' vid on Internet, but they're all about just clicking on 'adding styles' which isn't what i'm looking for. so i was wondering (as well as hoping and praying), if anyone with the voice of experience (if not expertise), could actually tell me how to do this with advanced renamer, cause i'm afraid logic isn't exactly my strong point.i get filenames in my sound samples from the soundpool in subfolders which are in turn in folders given a name to indicated their 'style' (rock, chillout etc).the filenames might look something like
grand piano a.ogg
grand piano c.ogg
grand piano f sharp.ogg
but they need to look like
grand_piano_a.ogg
grand_piano_f_sharp.ogg
i am using windows 7, and magix music does work on 7, it just refuses to handle long file names like it should. magix has been asked about this numerous times, and nothing has been forthcoming from them, so i really have come here as a last resort to finding out how to get this sorted out.

I wonder whether this should come as a doubt at all, nonetheless, here goes:Are there any restrictions concerning the name one can give to an user account in Windows 7? Namely, I wished to know whether one can give the name "Admin" to an account to set with administrator privileges, or is such a name restricted to be used due to any eventual conflicts/confusion it may lead to in the Windows Registry? Windows 7 here is Home Premium.

I know, the easy solution would be to turn off desktop composition, but that would be like disabling visual styles in windows XP, going back to windows 98 look.for me the most important thing about the desktop composition is that it let me choose colors, if not it is fixed to the green/bluish windows 7 default colores and cant be changed unless desktop compositiion is enabled.but when desktop composition is enabled (i mean, by default, it is enabled) when i move the cursor over the taskbar, over the folders i get a very nice chumbanil view, yeah.. pretty cute. but, how do i know which one is the one i am looking for? of course, there are thumbnails, but come on, they are thumbnail of folders.check the images of what i sayhere i can't see the names, until i go one by onewithout desktop compositionbut here with windows 7 at minimum (desktop composition turned off, with just moving the cursor over the folders in taskbar i get the menu with the names and i go to the one i need, fast and without confusion.is there any way i can have the names with desktop composition ON? or at leas the names offer the thumbnails.

Also, a lot of Chinese programs display gibberish (*&!@^%#$) when launched, such as the install for Office and Xunlei. Is there a way to fix this?

I had windows 7 on a SSD drive, assigned C: by windows 7, but it was full so I decided I'd clone it onto a bigger SSD drive using Acronis Disk Director. Went swimmingly I thought, both drives contained the same data. I wasn't too sure what my next step ought to be, whether acronis will have sorted it so that my new SSD now has the orginal SSD's drive letter or not. If it did, it will be mean a simple transition. But you guessed it, it left the drive letters the same, so when I booted up, it loaded from the orginal SSD. I then changed the original SSD drive letter, and used EasyBCD to remove the original boot and create a new one with the new SSD. Unfortunate now when I boot up Windows 7 I get a Preparing Your Desktop message for a couple of mins, but it's then followed by a screen with a cursor but no desktop icons or taskbar. It also seemed unresponsive to keyboard strokes.
