Edit / Rename Boot Menu Entries And Hide Other Windows 7 Partitions?
Sep 20, 2010
On my computer I have 3 primary partitions:
1. "System reserve" which contains e.g.the Bootmamanger and MBR
2. First Win 7 installation ("main")
3. Second Win 7 installation ("reserve")
When I boot now at first the Bootmanager on the first primary partition is called/started which in turn starts the boot menu. In the boot menu there are currently two entries:
Windows 7
Windows 7
So I cannot distinguish between the "main" and the "reserve" Win 7 installation. How exactly can I modify/rename the two "Windows 7" entries in boot menu? After selecting and booting the actual Windows 7 installation the other Windows 7 installation is visible as a separate partition in WinExplorer:
C: Running Windows 7
D: DVD drive
E: Other (non-booted) Windows 7
How can I automatically hide the other Windows 7 installation? The drive E: should be available e.g. for USB sticks or network drives.

Does anyone know if it is possible to
a) change the text on the Windows 7 boot screen in a multi boot situation from "Previous Version of Windows" to "Windows XP" for instance.
b) To actually password protect the menu so that only a certain user could boot into a particular OS .
I don't really want to use a 3rd party boot manager - but of course I suppose the other philosphy is if a user is not authorised to a particular application then why show it on the menu as a possible choice.
There should be some way of getting a logon prompt at boot and depending on the users privilege level display the boot options.
Another question -- On Windows 7 the XP partition is hidden (in Windows explorer).
On XP the Windows 7 system files are "viewable" as a separate disk drive. I like the hidden partition idea much better as the OS shouldn't be aware of the other OS.
This to me seems a not very good idea to allow the possibility of "tampering" with system files - especially by a previous version of an OS.
I could almost understand it if Windows 7 showed the XP system disk but not the other way round.

When i installed is version of win7 ie,Tiny7 Rev01 By experience. After that i tried to rename the drives(partitions) in 'My Computer' the first one ie,C: got renamed but the others r not. When i right clicking the a drive suppose D: & click to rename the edit cursor comes but after clicking OK it stays as 'LOCAL DISK D', but earlier when i installed this same version there was no such problem.
Anyone has any fix? If yes then plzzzz help me guys. Waiting for your response desperatly..
EDIT: One info i forgot to write here ie,I have A dual boot..i have XP installed in a other partition ie,C:..When i rename any partition while logged in win7 it not get renamed as i said but after that if i restart & log in XP then that specific partition which i renamed i win7 shows in XP..Eg:Suppose i renamed the C: as Master in Win7...it stays as local disk as in the sc above...but after that when log in Xp the C: shows as Master...&& in Xp everything is normal..

When I right-click on certain things (in this case, all types of files), some of the entries in the right-click menu are shorter than the others, and stick out of place. One of them is my Bluetooth "Send to Bluetooth Device" entry, which looks to be about 4 pixels shorter, and really does stick out like a sore thumb.

I installed a program called Folder Size which I am mostly happy with: Folder Size - Freeware. Check the directory sizes and folder sizes on your computer with this freeware tree size analysis tool. However, it added an entry to my right click context menu everywhere which is bothering me. I can find no option in the software to remove it.

When I pin a shortcut to the Start menu (from the installation directory in Explorer) and try to abbreviate the name, a figure in parentheses "(2)" appears after the name. The message that "There is already a file with the same name in this location." Technically, however, this is not true. For example, "Audacity.exe" is not "Audacity (2)." I have configured my system to show all files.
I looked in the app's installation directory and also in the subfolders, under All Users's and also under my usernameAppDataRoaming, etc.

I have Windows 7 OEM version. Recently my friend installed Ubuntu to work on it. After some time I removed Ubuntu through Add Remove programs but whenever I start my computer at the time of booting, it asks me to choose out of 3 entries :-- Windows 7, Ubuntu, Ubuntu.
Now, I wish to remove these 2 Ubuntu entries and I understand I have to remove some multi disk partition entries for Ubuntu, in bootmgr.dll... right??
How can I remove these two Ubuntu entries??
PS: This is for the moderators--I hope this doesn't come under "black-listed issues". According to my understanding, a simple meddling with bootmgr.dll such as the above doesn't qualify to come under "hacking"..or any other black list issues...

The little popup box in the tray that comes up when you hit the up arrow (to "Show hidden icons") is bugging me. It seems to have a timer built in that hides it a couple seconds after you click on one of the icons inside. This really bugs me. I would prefer that it either hide itself immediately after I click on one of the icons (but not if I right click one, obviously) or else lets me hide it by clicking directly on it somewhere. I know I can hide it by clicking on the arrow again, but some of my tray applications (namely my Portable Apps Launcher) minimize again if I click that arrow, leaving me with no other option than to wait for that annoying box to hide itself and get out of the way.

When booting system sometimes I hit F9 to select boot device, when I want to boot from dvd or usb. Before you say I can list boot devices in bios I know this, the problem Is UEFI and Legacy my UEFI system is not secure boot and for whatever reason I have to F9 and manually select usb or dvd legacy, some versions of linux will not boot otherwise.
UEFI boot sources:
Windows boot manager
Linux Mint
Linux mint
[Code]....
Over the course of the last year I have dual booted several version of linux, but it seems that linux mint and ubuntu add entries to my UEFI boot sources list...how do I remove them, the list is getting to long, and currently only windows 7 is installed.
Hp Pavillion Slimline s5-1114 Bios version 7.16 Ps other than this annoying list the system boots fine right into windows.

basically (I'll try to be descriptive), I have an Excel file (extension xlsm) on my USB and I right click it, send to --> desktop (create shortcut). I see the shortcut. I right click and attempt to rename it with a different file extension, but the 'Rename' box doesn't show up like I believe it should and the file name changes without the warning. I need to do this for the shortcut I've created, not the file on the USB.I have 'Hide extensions for known file types' unchecked and 'Display the full path in the title bar' checked, as I believe they should be.

I have a rather cluttered "new" context menu. Ie. when right clicking on my desktop I can choose "new" and choose "text document", "word document" etc.
Problem is that the menu includes lots of stuff I don't want to. In XP I could easily edit these items with MS TweakUI, but I haven't figured out how to do it in Windows 7.

I want to dual boot xp and windows 7 on two different partitions. And I want to have an additional partition for programs and one for user documents. Is it possible for the two os's to have the same shared program files directory.reason for this is to save space instead of having different installs for each just have them both run off the same directory.
