How do you rename the default "Network" connection name in Windows 7?? In vista, you could click customize in network and sharing center to rename the network and change the icon, etc. Windows 7 has no such option.... Also, Every time I restart my computer, I automatically get connected to an "unidentified network" public network type, and it says "mixed network". I can't connect to the internet at all when it does that. I have to disable my adapter and re-enable it to correct the problem. Any thoughts ?? It's quite frustrating because it happens on every boot.

Remove Password And Rename Network
Jun 6, 2011I setup a new router, and it works great. However, the first time I connected to the internet through it, I skipped the Network Setup Wizard or whatever it's called. My idiot of a friend "helped" me setup the network without me knowing it, renamed it after himself, and put password protection on it. I want to remove the password and rename the network. I checked all the router settings to make sure that WPA or anything else was active, but the problem persists on my craptop, and the network isn't showing up in the "manage wireless networks" screen.

The name is "Pentagon" which wast the name of the first router, and when we got the 2nd one we decided to name it Pentagon again, and my computer named it as "Pentagon 2" in the network and sharing center, but when I went to wireless networks, it was named Pentagon. Now the new router we just got is named "Pentagon 3". How can I make it say Pentagon again?

Sep 30, 2012basically (I'll try to be descriptive), I have an Excel file (extension xlsm) on my USB and I right click it, send to --> desktop (create shortcut). I see the shortcut. I right click and attempt to rename it with a different file extension, but the 'Rename' box doesn't show up like I believe it should and the file name changes without the warning. I need to do this for the shortcut I've created, not the file on the USB.I have 'Hide extensions for known file types' unchecked and 'Display the full path in the title bar' checked, as I believe they should be.

Sep 15, 2011I recently had a virus on my computer and decided to just reinstall the OS from top as I didnt have anything vitally important anymore. My C: drive was renamed to "Alcatel PC Suite" which is the name of the software I have for my cell phone.When I right click to rename it, I can type a new name in, I can click ok, it asks for permission and I can also click ok. Im an admin and the only user for the newly installed OS. After I give it permission, it still says the old name in My Computer.However when I go to properties of my C: drive, under the general tab, it has the new name listed.

Right click on your "C" drive and select properties (you can select rename instead)
In the Name box give it a name. (Example: Windows 7-64)
The point of naming your "C" drive?
If you dual boot you will always know what is on that drive so you'll not make a mistake and format it :-) If you boot from a VHD, makes it nice to know at a glance which drive is the host "C" drive If you use Diskpart to work with a drive you can use the command: list volume and the name will be shown under the label column (again helps you avoid a mistake)
This tip of renaming is also good with removable USB drives. (I like to rename them by Brandname) This name stays even if you remove the device, when you plug it back in the name shows with the drive letter that windows assigns (helps me in my feeble mindlessness)
The only type of physical drive you can't rename that I know of is CD/DVD drives

Dec 17, 2009I have all my programs stored on the P: drive but its running out of room and the D: drive is available.
Question: If I move all the programs to the D: drive and rename it to P:, will everything run from existing shortcuts?
Is there a simpler migration I am overlooking?
Unable To Rename The Drive (partitions) Names
Dec 5, 2009When i installed is version of win7 ie,Tiny7 Rev01 By experience. After that i tried to rename the drives(partitions) in 'My Computer' the first one ie,C: got renamed but the others r not. When i right clicking the a drive suppose D: & click to rename the edit cursor comes but after clicking OK it stays as 'LOCAL DISK D', but earlier when i installed this same version there was no such problem.
Anyone has any fix? If yes then plzzzz help me guys. Waiting for your response desperatly..
EDIT: One info i forgot to write here ie,I have A dual boot..i have XP installed in a other partition ie,C:..When i rename any partition while logged in win7 it not get renamed as i said but after that if i restart & log in XP then that specific partition which i renamed i win7 shows in XP..Eg:Suppose i renamed the C: as Master in Win7...it stays as local disk as in the sc above...but after that when log in Xp the C: shows as Master...&& in Xp everything is normal..
Can't Delete Or Rename Files On External Hard Drive
Jun 19, 2011I just figured out that I can't delete files from my external hard drive. It's WD Elements 320GB. Only thing I did before this occured is that I converted file system from FAT32 to NTFS via command in cmd prompt, but I'm not sure if that showed up after that. So, I don't have "delete" or "rename" commands on right click. Backup of all files is a no go since I don't have so much free space atm. I use my user account which is also admin account.

The only option Seagate gave was to make sure the drive was not indexing which it's not, my goal is to disconnect the drive, connect it to another computer etc Followed by reconnecting it back to the previous computer and it continues on as a network drive or if I connect it to another computer it continues to act as network drive. Seagate told me that I'd have to purchase their NAS drive which I didn't want too.

Feb 14, 2012I dragged a web address off and Windows created a shortcut. I was able to change the extension to .txt. The icon changed to that for a text file, and I could open the file and read it.
Since then, though, the url extension does not show up. If I select Rename and add .txt to the part of the filename showing, it evidently retains the url extension after the .txt extension because the icon doesn't change to the one for a text file, I'm not allowed to edit it, and selecting open results in it opening the web page - i.e., acting like it is still a .url file.
I have checked Tools -> View many times and the box for hiding common extensions is unchecked so that is not the problem.

Nov 24, 2010I have quick launch on my taskbar, and every time I add a new shortcut to my quick launch, I rename it to get rid of the "shortcut"-extension. Problem is that the top of the Rename window wants to place itself against the top of the taskbar, rather than open where it was the last time I closed it. It does not work in Windows 7 because the system does'nt allow renaming or modifying the key. I even tried to start windows in Safe Mode but I did not succeed.
