How To Rename Computer To Username On Computername ?
Nov 1, 2009
This was a popular tweak for Windows XP and it worked also in windows Vista: it needed a very simple change in Windows registry:
System Key: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}]
Rename the value named "LocalizedString" to "LocalizedString.old". Create a new REG_EXPAND_SZ value named "LocalizedString", and set the value to "%USERNAME% on %COMPUTERNAME%".
Exit the registry editor, click on your desktop and press F5 (for refresh). The "My Computer" icon should now be rename to "Username on Computername".
It does not work in Windows 7 because the system does'nt allow renaming or modifying the key. I even tried to start windows in Safe Mode but I did not succeed.
Windows 7 Registry Content is as follows (different than Vista and XP)
System Key: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}]
(Default) Type: REG_SZ Value:Computer
InfoTip Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ Value:@%SystemRoot%system32shell32.dll,-22913
LocalizedString Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ value:@%SystemRoot%system32shell32.dll,-9216

I have installed Windows 7 ultimate and have a server with Win server 2003 installed on it.
On my main pc (with Windows 7) I have two user-accounts, both administrator rights. Both users have access-rights to the server. User one (myself) can access the server without any problems. However, user two (my girlfriend) cannot get access!
When making a network-connection, it asks for username/pw. If I fill this in, I immediately get a new username/pw screen, however this time it gives me COMPUTERNAME/User to fill in.
Obviously, my server does not recognize COMPUTERNAME/User, so my girlfriend cannot get acces to the server. The strange thing is that if she use the option to use a different user, and fill-in MY username/pw, it works ok (only till she reboots the pc and logs-in again...).
If have seen advise like "look for the entry "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level" and open it. Click on the dropdown menu and select "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated". I tried all of that, but nothing seems to work
I had no problems what so-ever when using XP on my main PC, so their is definately nothing wrong with the settings on the server (admin rights etc.).
For some reason, I once managed to get access to the server under my girlsfriends account, but the next time she logged-in, noaccess was made and never ever since then.
I already setup a third user on my server with all right, made that user active under Windows 7, but I faced the same isssues as my girlfiends account. only the account of myself seems to work?

On every computer in my house, if I want to stream something from my server, I can go to start>run and just type \gomuhzserver, which is the computer name of the server, and stream whatever I want. But when I do it on this computer, I get an error messege: "Windows cannot access \gomuhzserver and gives me the error code 0x80070035 The network path was not found. Which is BULLSHIT. Because I have another laptop right here, and I'm connecting to it no problem. The other weird thing is this problem randomly started on this computer. Before that it worked just fine. Remote desktop works fine on this computer when I want to connect to the server, just not the \gomuhzserver thing.

basically (I'll try to be descriptive), I have an Excel file (extension xlsm) on my USB and I right click it, send to --> desktop (create shortcut). I see the shortcut. I right click and attempt to rename it with a different file extension, but the 'Rename' box doesn't show up like I believe it should and the file name changes without the warning. I need to do this for the shortcut I've created, not the file on the USB.I have 'Hide extensions for known file types' unchecked and 'Display the full path in the title bar' checked, as I believe they should be.

How can I rename the network as my computer remembers it? The name is "Pentagon" which wast the name of the first router, and when we got the 2nd one we decided to name it Pentagon again, and my computer named it as "Pentagon 2" in the network and sharing center, but when I went to wireless networks, it was named Pentagon. Now the new router we just got is named "Pentagon 3". How can I make it say Pentagon again?

I have two computers both running Win 7, one in the bedroom and one in the living room and Id like to view files from the bedroom computer in the living room. They are connected via TPlink powerline adapters so a wired connection for both
I can access the living room PC from the bedroom PC via control panel/Network no problem
but when I try accessing the bedroom PC from the living room, I get the error message login failure: unknown username or bad password
I have tried the following:
-creating a new user account for the bedroom PC, and logging in using that account and password
-changing the advanced sharing settings in network and sharing centre to match exactly
Also, I can access when I Turn off password protected sharing but I am not sure of the security of having this setting off so I really want password protected sharing on

I have a Dell Optiplex 755 that got some malware on it, so we decided to reformat and do a clean install. I booted from my Win7 flash drive, deleted the partitions, and things proceeded normally. When it asks me to name the computer I get "some characters are not valid" no matter what I enter. No possible way I'm entering invalid characters, I'm only using the alphabet!

I help network and run some office locations that run two or more computers. One computer is setup as a server with specific software on it, and another or more computers are setup as workstations. When attempting to connect to a workstation computer in the network I receive the error message:Network Error Windows cannot access \ComputerName Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose. Error Code: 0x80070035 The Network path was not found Here are some details:I'm trying to connect to a computer running Windows XP SP3 from a different computer running Windows 7 Pro Sp1 (both machines are 32-bit). Share folders are setup correctly giving everyone and administrators full access. I'm trying to connect from an administrative account created with the same name and password on both computers. Both computers have the same subnet and similar IPs (IE, one IP is 192.168.1.1 and the other is 192.168.1.2). Both computers are on the same workgroup name. Enable TCP/IP is setup on the network adapter (versus being "Default"). TCP/IPv6 is disabled Windows Firewall is disabled on the WinXP computer, and turned off on the Windows 7 computer. Computer Browser, Server, SSDP Discovery, and TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper services are all set to Automatic startup and started. Both computers have other software anti-virus/firewall that have been disabled (for testing purposes). I can browse the shared folder on the Windows 7 computer from the WinXP computer without problem, and don't get the above error on WinXP. Other interesting facts are that I can see the WinXP computer when opening the Network browser on the Windows 7 computer, but I can't see the Windows 7 computer in the Network Places browser on the WinXP computer. Also, I can edit the HOSTS with the computer names/IPs to stop the above error message, but it's really only a bandaid to this problem.I have other services that broadcast from the Windows 7 computer via the network adapters based on the LANA number (which I have correctly setup). These broadcast information and let software on the WinXP computer work correctly. These broadcasts are not getting through as if the LANA number was setup incorrectly, even with the HOSTS file edited.
I would like to find a solution without having to edit the HOSTS file. I've been reading forum post after forum post (google search). What's frustrating is this is not the only environment I have something like this setup (Windows 7/WinXP mix), but this network is the only one I'm having issues with. I've Looked over every concievable network setting between two identical mixed OS locations and found nothing different. Yet the problem persists. The Windows 7 computer was just upgraded to Windows 7 from WinXP Also. The image used to do the upgrade is the same used at another location I compared this computer to.

windows 7 home premium sp1 i cannot rename .jpg files. when i right-click the file, the 'rename' option does not appear. normally there is a 'create shortcut' 'delete' and 'rename' option in the list near the bottom but not when i right-click on a jpeg, these three have been curtailed to 'create shortcut'.provenance of the .jpg varies - some come from a camcorder's picture-taking thinggy, some from the 'net, some copied from an other machine, etc but all with extension .jpg opened paint and did a 'save as' (to get the new name )then deleted the original (the one i wanted to rename).

I have a dell inspiron with Windows 7 that I got from Walmart for christmas. It came with a walmart adminstrative account, a guest account, and another user account. I Changed the administrator username And password, kept the guest one, And deleted the third account--- all through the Walmart admin account. When I restarted my computer however, both the walmart admin And guest account were gone and only the third account with a required password (which I do not know) and a blank user account that requires a password remained.
There is no open guest account. I Tried to use the previous walmart username password And the new one I created and neither work. Now I am locked out of my own laptop. I tried booting in safe mode but I still needed the aforementioned password..perhaps I did it incorrectly?
I would like to solve this without having to reinstall windows 7 os (but would like to know how to do that just in case). Let me know if any other information is needed in your assessment.

I have added an SSD drive which contains operating system and programs. I used Paragon to migrate my old C drive to the new SSD. I can boot from the SSD (wow is it fast). But when I use my old username to log on (Dick) it logs me on as a temporary user. I have done the registry thing by erasing the BAK at the end of the profile but it does not work. I have created a new user name (Dick_New) and that works, but, of course I am having to recreate everything, and all of my links are broken, eg., my many plugins in Photoshop and Lightroom. Almost as bad as doing a clean install (which perhaps I should have done).
My question. Can I just copy my "Dick" user profile from my new F Drive (old C) onto the new SSD. Or perhaps, just overwrite the new profile with the old? With Photoshop and LR when I activate a plugin, it tells me I have to reenter the license info to activate. When I do that I am told that I cannot do it because possibly there is another copy already running. I am going to call Nik later this morning when they open, but I am hoping that someone here has the answer to this question also. Of course, if I can log on using my old profile, this would become mootech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.2OS Version: Microsoft Windows[CODE]

In order to rename the offending MKV files I need to boot into Ubuntu (using a Live OS from CD) and if I want to delete the files I either must use Ubuntu or a "file unlocking program" within Windows (the FileAssassin tool that ships with MalwareBytes is my current preference).

I somehow managed to rename the libraries as well as the 'Favorites' about half a year ago.I don't recall how, but remember that it took a lot of trial and error. It worked perfectly and consistently in the start menu and the window manager. Now, with the latest update (13 important) it all got changed back, and keeps so despite my effort to regain my version. How can I rename those again, or what was the update that reset MS defaults and how to kill it?

I recently had a virus on my computer and decided to just reinstall the OS from top as I didnt have anything vitally important anymore. My C: drive was renamed to "Alcatel PC Suite" which is the name of the software I have for my cell phone. When I right click to rename it, I can type a new name in, I can click ok, it asks for permission and I can also click ok. Im an admin and the only user for the newly installed OS. After I give it permission, it still says the old name in My Computer. However when I go to properties of my C: drive, under the general tab, it has the new name listed.

I dragged a web address off and Windows created a shortcut. I was able to change the extension to .txt. The icon changed to that for a text file, and I could open the file and read it.
Since then, though, the url extension does not show up. If I select Rename and add .txt to the part of the filename showing, it evidently retains the url extension after the .txt extension because the icon doesn't change to the one for a text file, I'm not allowed to edit it, and selecting open results in it opening the web page - i.e., acting like it is still a .url file.
I have checked Tools -> View many times and the box for hiding common extensions is unchecked so that is not the problem.

I really didn't know the best title for this problem. I have a problem with my girlfriends laptop, where she can't install any MSI files, due to a "The file cannot be opened" error, or something to that effect. After looking in the Permissions settings for the MSI file in question, I noticed something in the Security tab, under User Names. Where it's supposed to say Miss Ghoul (STEPHANIE-PCMiss Ghoul), it actually says... Miss Ghoul (STEPHANIE-PC"). There are " where Miss Ghoul should be. I tried for ages to find out how to change this, but because she's running Windows 7 Home Premium, I have no Group Policy editor (if it even helps to have it). Is there any way to force change the " to say what it's supposed to say? And could this have an efect on her ability to install MSI files?

This is a little tip I learned many moons ago...
Right click on your "C" drive and select properties (you can select rename instead)
In the Name box give it a name. (Example: Windows 7-64)
The point of naming your "C" drive?
If you dual boot you will always know what is on that drive so you'll not make a mistake and format it :-) If you boot from a VHD, makes it nice to know at a glance which drive is the host "C" drive If you use Diskpart to work with a drive you can use the command: list volume and the name will be shown under the label column (again helps you avoid a mistake)
This tip of renaming is also good with removable USB drives. (I like to rename them by Brandname) This name stays even if you remove the device, when you plug it back in the name shows with the drive letter that windows assigns (helps me in my feeble mindlessness)
The only type of physical drive you can't rename that I know of is CD/DVD drives

Win 7 Pro x64. I've used a little app that you might know called 'IP Messenger for Win' (Open Source LAN Messenger / Chat application). It works well but with the latest version I'm getting a strange sequence of numbers appended to my Username (as per screenshot). It's not easy to get support on the product so thought I'd try here to see if someone recognises the issue and, no, it seems to have nothing to do with the 'machine name / description' - I've changed those (and back) to test. My Windows username is 'Jem' (which I've also tried changing). The rest is self explanatory - the other two users in the shot are Vista and XP.
