Unable To Install McAfee Virus Software Due To Windows Update Error
Jul 25, 2012
I'm having a major virus/malware issue as my McAfee firewall protection stopped working suddenly. Called McAfee to reinstall the virus software and they were unable to install it. They said that since my Windows Update feature is not working (there is a big red X and updates are not downloading and installing) the McAfee installation is failing. Asked me to fix this issue first and then try McAfee installation.

A while back, after successfully downloading and installing some updates in the Windows Update, it prompted me to restart the computer to finish the update installation process. However, I continued to use the computer for quite some time before restarting it, and then when it tried to configure the updates on the start-up screen, it showed that it was not successful in doing so. In the past, I noticed that this would typically happen when I did not restart the computer immediately (or within a short time) after the updates finished and I got the prompt to restart. I would have to go to Windows Update and do it over again, and then upon immediate restart, it would always work properly. But this time, it did not, and I keep getting the 8000FFFF error message instead.
Also, now, every time I start the computer, it shows that it's "Preparing to configure Windows... Do not shut off computer" (presumably the updates that never got completely and correctly configured) in the start-up screen... gets to 35%..fails... shuts down (screen goes black)... restarts again... tries to configure again, fails again, shuts down and restarts again... tries to configure again, fails again, and finally it apparently gives up and says "reverting changes" and finally goes to the desktop.I've looked at the answers in several threads at the answers.microsoft.com forum that were started by people with similar problems, and also tried several of the Microsoft "FixIt" files on the Microsoft site, but none of them worked. I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium.

I'm out of ideas. I've been running Win 7 on this machine for more than a year without issues in updating etc. Now it will not search or update/install critical items. I'm running Symantec (even tried turning the firewall off without any success). I get an error code 80072F7C. When I run hijackthis, I get an error message that my system denied write access to the Hosts file. I proceed with the scan but am unable to produce a log file. I've included a screenshot from the windows update error as well as the error I get when trying to run hijack this.

I have just bought an iPad and have to update my version of iTunes.Currently I am running version 10:4:1:10 and need to update to 10:6:3. I have downloaded iTunes no problem but at the end of installation I get the following message "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A programme for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package Vendor".I have gone into services.msc and to the windows installer and run Start and also changed from manual to automatic to no avail.I am running Windows 7 64 bit with McAfee anti-virus software.
I want to synch my iTunes library to my iPad any suggestions as to how I can install the iTunes update?

I am trying to rectify the error with windows update. Everytime I try to update it tells me it is checking for updates...Then "To check for updates, you must first install an update for Windows Update. Your automatic Updating settings will not change." I click Install now and get "Window could not search for new updates"An error occured while checking for new updates for your computer. Error(s) Found Code 80070643 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.
This problem first came to light a year ago when I downloaded a windows update that was corrupt. It forced the computer to loop the autocheck upon boot and could only be started in safe mode or by canelling the check. After looking through the forums I found an interim fix which disabled the autocheck and since have always recieved the message upon restarting "Autocheck program not found".I naturally thought this issue would be resovled in the next update and or a future fix.I had to go away for work at the start of this year and when I got back and windows updated it still had the autocheck message.Recently I have been unable to update at all due to the aforementioned error. The simplest soultion it would seem would be to do a system restore, this I have tried however every possible point seems to have a corrupt file on it.I ran a scan using Malwarebytes and found nothing.I don't want to format as the programs came pre installed and that would mean taking to back to the shop.

a while back, my computer was infected with a windows antivirus... virus. Essentially, it took over the windows defender and warned me about fake viruses so that it could get me to download more. I was able to clear that up on the bleepingcomputer forums, but was told to go elsewhere to fix my updater and defender. I'll post the link to that old thread, but first I'll post your standard info...

I'm trying to install Windows 7 64 bit on one our computers that had XP 32 bit. I'm doing a clean install and have already formatted and partitioned the hard drive. The problem I'm having is that now it won't let me install windows 7. When you highlight the system partition it shows and error, which states, "Windows is unable to install to the selected location, Error: 0x80300001" I thought I might need a SATA driver for the hard drive but I haven't been able to locate the right one if thats the problem.

Loaded 7Ultimate and got to Install screen. Selected drive and made new partition. Clicked next. Received error: Quote: Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the setup log files for more info. I don't know how to get to the logs, but what does this message mean? I have tried almost 6 or 7 times and even once with my 7 Home edition disk. Ran the startup repair a couple times. Tried formatting the drive from my XP Pro sp3 disk.So now here's where the real problem comes in: ERROR LOADING OPERATING SYSTEM. Now I can't get back into XP! Tried booting from ERD Commander 05, but I get an error code 4096 with that, and "File SETUPREG.HIV could not be loaded".How can I get XP back to booting properly? Maybe it's a faulty hard drive and needs returning. But it is extremely important that I get this computer back up and running immediately.

For the past 2-3 months I've been receiving the same error in Windows Update every time I try and update: Error 80246008. I've tried the Microsoft Fix It application and the same problem occurs. I took a look into the services and when I try to start one service required by Windows Update it always fails because its core services are not launched, so I tried to launch those and those won't even launch.

I tried to dual boot Fedora 18 with my Windows 7. They are on two different hard drives. Fedora 18 worked but I was unable to boot up Windows 7. Frustrated, I decided to just delete everything from all the hard drives and try to do a clean install of Windows 7 using the USB-DVD Windows tool to make a USB Windows 7 installer. I then got the following error when trying to install Windows onto my hard drive:
"Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the Setup log files for more information"
I tried unplugging the other hard drives and got the same error. I also went to the command prompt and used Diskpart and did clean all. Still the error shows up. Something that might be useful is that when I did disk list in the command prompt it showed my hard drive but with 0 free space. Not sure if this is useful but the drive I want Windows 7 on is a solid state drive but the one I had Fedora on is a normal hard drive and I had an extra harddrive that I used for storage that is a normal hard drive as well.

A client of mine (I'm an IT summer temp in a production facility) recently contracted the Windows 7 Recovery virus and contacted me to fix it. Having encountered the XP version recently and resolved the issue, I was able to easily remove the virus and associated rootkit. The difference this time was that unhide.exe failed to restore the start>all programs menu shortcuts, although it did manage to restore the folder structure. I read through and followed the instructions of another thread here: [URL]. Which did not resolve the issue. The output given by SystemLook is as follows:

Originally got message - Disk read error occurred press ctl alt del to restart. Then tried plugging this drive using a USB connector into my desktop PC to see if I could run some chkdsk. Then my desktop PC displayed messages telling me my firewall and virus software had been turned off and the computer crashed. ROOTKIT? So I was left with 2 drives not working. I re installed windows on desktop but using ISO on flash drive BUT can't on the 500GB Hitachi HTS545050B9SA00 for some reason. Windows setup loaded and Deleted old partitions and formatted. When I tried to install, it froze. It now just boots up with a windows loading screen and I'm also unable to boot from flash drive as it freezes. This is on a Sony Vaio VPCEB4E4E.

Windows Update installation of Win7 SP1 (updating existing version of 6.1.7600.16385) reports the install as successful until reboot, then says successful and unsuccessful in the same dialog box. Error ID is 80242016. Subsequent run of windows update shows SP1 not installed. Problem repeats, even after following all steps in troubleshooting, including running the recommended hot fix for KB 947821, troubleshooting, & turning off anti-virus. Also, the windows update troubleshooter identifies my system as AMD64 architecture even though it is Intel I7 2600K. System infomation id's the CPU correctly. I've been trying to get Windows 7 working for a couple days, without success. A friend of mine told me about this forum, so I figured I's try my luck and ask my fellow Windows users.
I have a valid, working copy of Windows 7 build 7000x32 on disk. The same disk has been used on other computers and works fine. However on my machine, it begins the installation just fine, until it reaches the blue Windows 7 background screen. Then it stops. No error, it just stops working.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? I find it extremely frustrating.

My Acer 7736Z-4809 laptop (pre-installed w/ Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, so I don't have the Windows 7 CD) was recently hit with a virus. I constantly got the BSOD "iaStor.sys" and a black screen. Startup Repair at first couldn't complete repair, but when I tried again, it found no errors. Tried System Restore to no avail. Was able to do a System Image Recovery using a backup on an external HD, but none of the programs worked (wanted to use Ad-Aware and Spybot to eliminate the virus). When I clicked on programs on the desktop or Start menu, nothing happened, didn't even get an "Open with." Even in Safe Mode, none of the programs worked. I checked the Task Mgr, and explorer.exe was still there, but RAID wasn't. Went to Control Panel Programs to uninstall/repair programs, but got message that programs seemed to be already uninstalled...it was like the programs weren't even recognized. Once in awhile when I clicked on IE8 in Windows Explorer (not via desktop shortcut or Start menu), IE8 actually opened, so I downloaded Hijack This and Avast anti-virus, but when I tried to install them, I got the msg: "Installation must be on a local hard drive."
Continued to get the "iaStor.sys" BSOD. I read to run Verifier and disable it, so I tried that (not sure if that made things worse). Tried to do another System Image Recovery, but this time it couldn't recognize the backup on the ext HD. Tried Startup Repair, and it couldn't complete repair. Went to Recovery Management to reset the OS, but my User ID(?) couldn't be found. Decided to do a Factory Install - during "Setup is preparing your computer for first use" I got the error msg: "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click 'OK' to restart the computer, and then restart the installation." Every time I try to restart it, I get the same error msg.

I am trying to install with the downloadable executable from the student discount program, the files are located on an external hard drive.
I downloaded Windows 7 last night and started the install, it got up to the point where it checked for Vista SP1 and stopped. I had reinstalled Vista recentely and forgotten to install it.
I quit the Windows 7 install and installed SP1 for Vista. Now every time I try to launch the Windows 7 install I get the following error:
"The unattend answer file contains an invalid product key. Either remove the invalid key or provide a valid product key in the unattend answer file to proceed with Windows installation."
I tried deleting the temp file that was in the same directory as the install files for Windows 7 as well as deleting the expanded set up directory and letting it re unpack the files.

I put my copy of Windows 7 on a USB drive drive to install on my netbook and it gets all the way to the "installing updates" part when it says "Windows cannot update the registry" and the installation quits and rolls back the half-completed install.
I even press "do not update" at the very beginning when it asks if I want to install updates or not before the install.
I'm trying to install on a new partition from my current partition with Windows 7 starter because it doesn't appear that the netbook (Toshiba NB205-N230) has a USB boot option.

I'm running windows 7 professional 32bit, Virgin broadband so i have their free virus and spyware program, virgin media security (old PCGuard) .
Recently when i perform a virus scan it has started to hang up when it reached the C: / Windows / temp / tmp00002b12c folder. So because it was hanging i decided to empty the temp folder.
All items went to the C:recycle.bin, then i performed the virus scan again, this time it now hangs on the same particular folder when scanning the C: / recycle.bin
So i emptied the recycle bin and even now it still hangs on the same folder and is unable to complete the virus scan, the virus scan stops dead as soon as it reaches this point, just hangs there until i force close the anti virus software.
I have read and digested a lot of information explaining that the files do not get deleted, only the index to the file when emptying the recycle bin, but i can not seem to find a way to solve my problem, how do i get access to this file that exists on my drive to clear it to allow me to complete a virus scan??
