The taskbar always stays on no matter what is open. Its really bugging me. I can't findsetting to make it hide when a program is open. I don't want to use the autohide feature. I windows xp it just let the windows open to max and would hide under what ever program was open.
View 1 RepliesI have the setting "Hide Taskbar" selected, yet I find it often refuses to stay hidden. It seems like sometimes it will do this when an application/window wants to "tell me something", like that there's a new email (sometimes even when the "envelope" that indicates new mail isn't in sight), but sometimes it just seems to stay up for no reason, and I have to close all the windows one by one to get rid of it. Is there any way to get the Taskbar to Stay Hidden unless I'm mousing over it?

It already auto hides fine but sometimes I open a maximized window and it covers the small task bar thing at the bottom when it auto hides. With Windows XP, I used to just drag an icon there and it would stay. I haven't been able to do that with Win 7.
I'm not sure if Quickmenu is the right term. I mean a portion of the taskbar that holds icons so one can conveniently launch one's most often used applications from there when the desktop icons are hidden by already open windows.
I've noticed that if I choose to have an expanded taskbar as in the attached thumb, it doesn't stay that way through a reboot and I have to do it all over again despite locking it.
Just an FYI.
My taskbar comes and goes. It refuses to stay pinned to the bottom of my screen.

View 2 Replies View RelatedSo about a month ago I restarted my computer and when it came back on all my programs pinned to my task bar and everything that was in my start menu was gone. From there I could not unlock the taskbar and nothing would pin in either the start menu or taskbar. I researched everywhere about it. I tried unlocking the taskbar in properties and registry with no luck. I finally found some posts about how my user profile was corrupt and from there I went on and made a new profile and copied everything and BOOM it all worked fine now. Well today it happened AGAIN! I restarted my computer and everything disappeared. So I think it is still a corrupt profile, but this is the second time it has happened.

That said, He can not pin anything to taskbar or start menu. I cleared both folders of shortcuts(567 of them) but to no avail. He also has no options under his desktop Context menu for New. He is also using a roaming profile, of which I will disable next time I am there. I have a feeling that might be the issue. I did scour the internet trying all the usual suggestions, but do vaguely remember something about an entry in cache somewhere that if it is too big or corrupt, it could cause this behavior. I am unable to find that post anywhere now.I mention the network card because one post had taskbar issues until he disabled his faulty network card. I have disabled the faulty network card.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI had a program installed called Spiral Knights, and I pinned the icon onto the taskbar so I could quickly launch it. When I was done playing it for good, I uninstalled it and it looked like the icon was off the taskbar, but it wasn't. When I tried to put another program onto the taskbar, called minecraft_server.jar, it pinned to the Spiral Knights icon, even though SK isn't installed anymore. Wherever I try to put the minecraft_server.jar onto the taskbar, the SK program is still there, and it says if I want to pin the minecraft_server.jar onto SK.

Event viewer says that the wake up source is unknown. I have run an energy report but don't know how to fix the errors it is coming up with. I have pasted the report below.

I have two systems here running Windows 7. One system is older with a PS2 mouse. I think that is why my monitor will not stay off. I have gone into advanced power settings and turned off sleep, and made sure all my settings look right. I have also gone to device manager and un-checked the "allow this device wake computer" box for the mouse. The monitor still comes on when you touch the mouse. What else could be making the monitor come on? How do I make the mouse so it's less sensitive or disable it so you have to hit the keyboard to turn on the monitor?

I just built it like last week, and everything runs beautifully about it; that is, except that the dang thing won't stay turned off! I tell it to shutdown, and it turns itself back on after about two or three seconds. Let me clarify: the computer itself does NOT randomly shutdown, nor am I having problems with sleep or hibernate (haven't used them yet).
Ok, so I have tried about everything on every help forum I've read from here to knittingforums.com. I have disable all wake events, including the ones in regards to network adapters. I have disabled automatic restart, and even fooled around in the BIOS, disabling all wake events. I've even flipped around between BIOS commanded and OS commanded event wakes in the BIOS. About the only thing I can do is log off of my user account, and then do a hard shutdown. Even did the thing where you specifically set what the power button does.
So... please help! I will be most gracious, and will give any more information if necessary. The only thing I have NOT done is flash the BIOS; it won't recognize the USB device I have the updated drivers on.
I used to be able to press the power button, and my windows 7 would got "and stay" in sleep until I pushed the power button again. what to do to keep it in sleep?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running win7 on an hp phoenix pc with 12 GB RAM, Intel I7-2600 CPU, SSD + 1 TB HDD. I've had the pc for about 6 months, but recently my icons are being shifted all to the left side of the screen. If I rearrange the icons to where I want them, they will all be shifted to the left side of the screen whenever i reboot. I was able to find on google. I also tried HP tech support and they were not able to fix this issue. Has anyone else found a solution to this problem? I've seen lots of others complaining about this matter, but all the proposed solutions seem to relate to unchecking the "align to grid" or "automatically align icons" options under the "view" menu selection on the desktop. None of these options work. Why is this happenning in the first place? The machine was not doing this in the first few months I had it. This only started about a month ago. Every time I log back in, they revert.In particular, Im trying to change the way a slideshow is displayed. I go to Desktop Background and change Position to Fit. I Save Changes and all seems to be well. I also save the desktop theme under My Themes. But when I log back in it goes back to Stretch. Am I missing some kind of permissions thing? Or do I just not understand how desktop themes get saved?

Procedure: right click desktop/view/uncheck align to grid/blablabla well I do it and then it rechecks after refresh immediately by itself and moves icons back to grid which i dont want. View 8 Replies View RelatedSince windows 7 is coming out tomorrow, i might pick up a copy of it. I've been thinking if i should upgrade my Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 home premium. Should i do the upgrade?
Also, if i do the upgrade should i do the upgrade option or the custom install option? i do want a clean system but i'm scared that my laptop would be mess up after doing that. What files get kept and/ or deleted when i do the custom install, anything i should watch out for. And what is the upgrade option, does all my files and programs get kept and just replaces the OS?
This new USB3.0 ext HDD seems to be in an almost constant state of Windows thinking it is unplugged, then just plugged back in, back and forth. I had to shut autoplay on it off because it would happen at least once a minute, sometimes 30 seconds, sometimes a couple minutes. The drive and case are brand new, but this is just like what was happening with my old drive via eSATA. I thought something was just wrong with the drive or my eSATA port, but now this. I know the USB3.0 port is fine because I have plugged in flash drives (even a 3.0 one) and connected other drives via 2.0 in it, with no problem. As for the eSATA ext HDD at least, this was happening a couple months ago before I wiped my system, and is still happening now. New OS install changed nothing.
These drives show up as known and installed in Device Manager. Disk Management's info is correct. Acronis is the same. Sometimes they just need a coaxing from "Scan for Hardware Changes" to even try to let me do anything. Windows Explorer, though, shows it all on its own, when it does think it's plugged in. (& yes, the plug fits quite snugly into the port, all is fine there.) Also, on my fiance's rig, both drives are also behaving exactly as the should. It's something over here...what could be causing my system to have trouble keeping these external drives onboard?
when you install windows 7 customly? or do you have to redownload it? microsoft won't let you download it if you're not a genuine user, so i want to keep it, if possible, so i can use aero.

when i was running the windows 7 rc, everything ran well with my network settings.
today, i received my windows 7 party pack and installed the os. whenever i reboot the computer, i don't have internet access. i have to go to network and sharing center to go to the ipv4 settings to input the default gateway everytime. my nic is the integrated realtekRTL8168/8111 Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC. at first, i used the microsoft drivers from the os. i did update to the realtek drivers, but the same thing is happening.
i've also ran various ipconfig commands, but nothing i've been able to do seems to help. anything i'm missing?

This only just happened 2 days ago, Sunday my icons were where I put them, and not moving on their own.Suddenly Monday they are auto arranged on the left side in no particular order.So, what is causing thisFirst let me say, I have already checked, auto arrange is NOT on. I've also not right clicked my desktop and clicked sort by >.This problem is happening on boot up, I can move an icon to a different spot, reboot and it will be moved back to the left side of my screen. I do have a dual monitor setup, I have a 22" asus monitor hooked up through HDMI to DVI (HDMI end is on the monitor), and then a 40" tv hooked up from HDMI to HDMI. Both monitors are running into a single HIS 6950 2GB model video card. I've had this working fine since last September.
The only coincidence I can think of that may have caused this is my graphic drivers. If my memory serves me correctly I updated from 12.11 to 12.12 for the ATI card Sunday night after it popped up and bugged me and I decided I wasnt lazy enough to have it remind me again a week later. So I went ahead and updated, all worked fine, shut down and booted pc back up the next day (Monday) and sure enough icons moved. either thats the problem or it's a huge coincidence. I'm going to roll the drivers back to the 12.11 version to test this theory but I was curious if anyone else had heard reports of this, or even experienced this problem themselves, and if so was it the same 12.12 drivers I mentioned or something else?
