Dec 4, 2011I have a weird problem on my PC in that on many (but not all) drop-down menus, when I click the arrow to drop a menu it drops but then immediately closes again before I can even get my mouse moving into the options available - and this happens repeatedly. I may be able to get it to open once in every five or six attempts if I am lucky. This is mainly on dialogue boxes where most drop-down menus are found although not all. For example Word dialogues I have no problems at all.
I've done some searching around and found details of the MS System File Checker and done a scan. This seemingly found corrupt files and repaired them AND produced a 12.5MB log file. However, I still have the problem.
More searching found it could be due to multiple mice found in Device Manager (DM). Looking in my DM I found six entries under Human Interface Devices labelled "HID-compliant device" with no explanation of what they relate to. As far as I am aware I should not expect to find any more two at most, these being a mouse (Logitech optical mouse) and a Wacom Bamboo tablet. I uninstalled the tablet leaving just the mouse and rebooted but I still have five such entries. I also have two unexplained entries under "Mice and other pointing devices" labelled "USB Input Device" - a third such entry is labelled "USB Input Device (Logitech Download Assistant)"
Whilst my tablet was uninstalled and indeed disconnected, I did some further checks using just the mouse. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to make any difference - I still cannot guarantee that a drop-down box will remain open. However, I have noticed that it does not seem to affect the drive drop-down. Only the filename and file type drop-downs - at least in saving and opening dialogues but I'm sure I've had other drop-down menu types where this has also happened.
My first question therefore is: is it safe to remove the excess HID device entries in my DM and do I have to boot into Safe Mode to do it?
PS I should add that my mouse has a switch on it enabling me to switch it off when not in use. It is therefore switched off most of the time. Also, prior to reinstalling Windows 7 on 12 October I didn't have this problem and I had exactly the same system hardware config and the same software installed.

Nov 6, 2012I woke up this morning to find out that my computer had a BSOD crash. But this time I couldn't check what had happened the debugger crashed itself before I could look at it. I also found out that my desktop had been reorganized so it was only in columns on the left side of the desktop. Also my recent programs area under the start menu had been wiped. Whenever I try to open any folder I get server execution failed. I have already tried the registry fixes suggested here. Server Execution failed I am unsure what to change, but it seems like my problem is a bit more than just a simple registry problem.

New PC Won't Stay Asleep
Feb 15, 2012I have a new HP which is jumping back out of sleep every time. It doen't matter how it goes to slepp, on timer, start menu, power button... 30sec - 1min later it wakes up again.
Event viewer says that the wake up source is unknown. I have run an energy report but don't know how to fix the errors it is coming up with. I have pasted the report below.

Monitor Will Not Stay Off
May 30, 2009I have two systems here running Windows 7. One system is older with a PS2 mouse. I think that is why my monitor will not stay off. I have gone into advanced power settings and turned off sleep, and made sure all my settings look right. I have also gone to device manager and un-checked the "allow this device wake computer" box for the mouse. The monitor still comes on when you touch the mouse. What else could be making the monitor come on? How do I make the mouse so it's less sensitive or disable it so you have to hit the keyboard to turn on the monitor?

Sep 29, 2009I am about at wits end when it comes to this computer. I just built it like last week, and everything runs beautifully about it; that is, except that the dang thing won't stay turned off! I tell it to shutdown, and it turns itself back on after about two or three seconds. Let me clarify: the computer itself does NOT randomly shutdown, nor am I having problems with sleep or hibernate (haven't used them yet).
Ok, so I have tried about everything on every help forum I've read from here to knittingforums.com. I have disable all wake events, including the ones in regards to network adapters. I have disabled automatic restart, and even fooled around in the BIOS, disabling all wake events. I've even flipped around between BIOS commanded and OS commanded event wakes in the BIOS. About the only thing I can do is log off of my user account, and then do a hard shutdown. Even did the thing where you specifically set what the power button does.
So... please help! I will be most gracious, and will give any more information if necessary. The only thing I have NOT done is flash the BIOS; it won't recognize the USB device I have the updated drivers on.

I've had the pc for about 6 months, but recently my icons are being shifted all to the left side of the screen. If I rearrange the icons to where I want them, they will all be shifted to the left side of the screen whenever i reboot. I was able to find on google. Feb 6, 2011trying to make some basic changes to the screen personalization but they wont stick. I'm in administrator mode, by the way. Every time I log back in, they revert.In particular, Im trying to change the way a slideshow is displayed. I go to Desktop Background and change Position to Fit. I Save Changes and all seems to be well. I also save the desktop theme under My Themes. But when I log back in it goes back to Stretch. Am I missing some kind of permissions thing? Or do I just not understand how desktop themes get saved?
