Second Hard Drive Not Being Recognised
Jul 18, 2011
I'm a complete newbie on Windows 7, having been a diehard XP user. I'm actually fielding this question from my XP computer. However, I now have a new computer running Win7 Home Premium (64-bit).Currently, it's completely 'clean', no other software installed bar Win7. I haven't even connected it to the web yet! There are two 500Gb hard drives installed. However, when I click on 'Computer', all I see is notification of ONE drive only:'
When I right-click 'System Reserved', I have the option: 'Change Drive Letter & Paths'. I don't have that option if I click '465Gb Unallocated'If I give 'System Reserved' a letter, will this then designate my 'missing' drive accordingly? If I then click 'Computer' will it show 'Hard Drive (1) and 'Hard Drive (2)?All I want to do is 'see and access' the second drive and be able to add files etc to it whenever I want. Just the way I can with XP.

I have a Maxtor 500GB stand alone hard drive which I originally bought for a Vista laptop, but have also been using it on my new Windows 7 laptop. It has been absolutely fine for the 6 months that I've been on Windows 7, but today Windows Update decided that I needed 27 (count 'em!) updates to be installed an run - mostly for MS Office.

I've recently purchased a Zoomstorm PC and am running Windows 7 professional. I was happily going along when the dvd driver stopped being seen. It is there in the BIOS. I have checked the SATA cables, I have checked the filters in the regedit - I have even been on the MShelp forums and done all advised. But to no avail. The DVD does open and shut and I think mechanically it is fine. I do think that I am missing some kind of driver - that isn't supported by Windows 7. Although it was there initially. I can't re-install Windows 7 as its ...my DVD drive!! The DVD is a Samsung

I have a hard drive I want to backup to a 64gb flash drive and then restore it to another different hard drive than where it came from. I have windows 7 and office on my laptop and I want it on my desktop pc. There isn't close to 64gb of info on my laptop so it should be fine even though the hard drive says I have 160gb. It is all free space except for those programs.

So, I have a i7 2600K system with a solid state disk as the boot drive, and an older (c2008) Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB drive as the data drive for programs (that I deem as not worthy of the quick load times). The hard drive has given me some errors over time, and I bought a hard disk to replace it (a Hitachi 1TB). The issue I'm having is that the fact that Windows 7 puts a small (100MB) partition on the F3, and for some reason, even though I'm running Acronis 2012, it doesn't seem to be able to clone the F3 over to the Hitachi. I've also tried Drive XML, and for my 2 hour wait, I only managed to acquire a boot error. Thankfully, I've not done anything rash to destroy the data on the F3, but given the fact that I've seen corrupted files in Steam from that drive, I'm not will to trust it long term with my data. I really need to get the data onto that Hitachi, though... Anyone have any advice for upgrading the HDD in a SSD/HDD system? I don't really feel like it should be so hard, especially if I've bought Acronis True Image, but maybe they haven't designed their product to handle this scenario quite yet?

I have a HP Touchsmart IQ500. Turning my computer PC on today, all I got was a blue HP invent screen with setup, boot menu, system recovery, and system diagnosis, and I could not get past it. I entered the BIOS and figured out that the hard drive was listed as "not installed." Pretty sure that is the main problem.I tried a system restore (with the Windows 7 install disc), but I guess the computer couldn't read the hard drive enough to enter safe mode (I tried restarting and F8ing several times). I put in an external hard drive, and the BIOS read it; however, windows does not allow you to partition an OS on a hard drive.

Me and my brother built me a new computer from scratch (he did the building - i did the watching). I purchased an internal hard drive from Overclockers UK. It's a Samsung 1TB drive. I also have a 64 Solid-state drive in there as my primary hard drive that Windows was installed on and a couple of programs are installed on. My storage disk (the 1TB disk) is for all my music/films etc. Whenever I drag and drop a file into the Samsung hard-drive - it copies it rather than moves it instantly. When I had a laptop, I had 3 external hard drives and this is the way it copied files onto them.how I can get the internal drive to stop acting like an external drive?

I have a new computer running Windows 7 Home Premium and a new laptop with the same o/s.
I have a new Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX150 and an old Canon camera.
According to Panasonic the driver for their camera is incorporated in 7. I tried the canon and there was no problem downloading.
The Lumix down loads perfectly on the laptop without any drivers being added.
When I try to download the Lumix to the computer all I get is
"one of the usb devices has malfunctioned and windows does not recognise it"
When I check the message it says "Unknown device. (check connections) If windows still does not recognise it replace the device"
Why does it work with the laptop and not the computer? Panasonic are no help once I said it worked on the laptop.

make a dualboot comp by adding windows XP to a new partition. I created the new partition with 20gb. (From the 500 of my actual harddrive)But before I actually installed on that, I got distracted with a second harddrive that my dad got(for no reason). It had a full copy of Windows XP backed up on it from another computer, so I figured I would just use that for the dualboot. I plugged it in (wired the same way as my old harddrive, but different data slot), restarted, checked the harddrive in explorer - all the data was there / reading correctly / etc, and I used 'easyBCD' to add the new harddrive to the boot list.(Which, of course, crashes if I try to start it. I just wanted to see what it would do). For a reason I can't remember, I unplugged the second harddrive for a bit, started the computer on accident (I don't know if anything loaded before I shut it off), and then when I plugged it back in.Windows 7 would not launch. It goes to a DOS-like window, except it's just a flashing _ and it never does anything even after a few minutes. XP didn't work still.. so I decided to reinstall XP (as I couldn't tell which harddrive was which on the list, I unplugged the main harddrive while installing onto the new).. and when I did this.. it formatted and installed fully... then restarted.. then restarted.. and restarted.. and just kept restarting, never showing any thing past the manufacturer logo/BIOS load-button-message-thing. So, I then try to use my 3-disk Windows7Recovery disk(burned myself with a program apparently included by the manufacturer.) It installed fully, appearing to work.. but when I launched it, it said "Invalid Partition Table" and wouldn't boot past that. When I insert my driver installer disk, it gives me a basic DOS window thing. dir A: shows the files in the disk. dir B: for some reason shows the same. C: says "Error reading from drive C: DOS area: general failure". All other letter:'s just say "invalid drive". (I'm doing this with both harddrives in.) I attempted connecting the harddrives to an old computer, but it gave an error for both. (It detected the harddrives, but said it had an error reading from it. Windows Explorer asked me to format it... {i'm willing to format one of the drives if anybody thinks it will help, but the old harddrive has data I'd prefer not to lose.} ) Looking on google, I saw several problems that all have similar problems (less overdescripptive than I am though) but none of the fixes suggested worked for me. Also - as I have two different with different errors, I only need to make one of them work.)Also - my other available computer has a CD burner / floppy drive if either are required. I also have several USB's. The computer can boot from USB's and CD's (tested), and I could easily take the floppy thingy and connect it to the computer.also - this computer is probably still under warranty unless unscrewing the hard drive voids it. .. does that count as modification of the computer?

I have a problem with an existing program I have had for years. I had the installation program on my disk, but after re installing Win 7 I somehow have lost the installation program. It is an old one and therefore not awailable any more. I have the program installed on an disk partition, buit when clicking on the icon it tells me that window cannot find language.dll.I have the program installed on another Computer running XP, but it is very slow.Is there any way I can get into Window and install the missing file myself. Alternative would be to remove the XP disk from the old computer and install it on the newer computer, but I might get problem with having both XP and Win 7 running on the same computer.

I have a problem I hope someone can help with. I have an Iomega Prestige 1Tb USB HDD which is working fine. I have however just insstalled Windows 7 RC on an old PC to try it out. The installation went fine and I connected the USB HDD and copied over a number of files to help further set it up to meet my requirements with no problem.
I then installed drivers for my Speedtouch 330 USB Modem and now the USB HDD is not working. I have tried uninstalling the Modem Driver and uninstalling the USB HD Driver and then reconnecting but with no success. I continue to get a Windows 7 error message. The USB HDD is still working perfectly on my XP laptop.
I hope someone can suggest a solution before I try a complete Windows 7 reinstall?

I have a desktop and a laptop. Both Windows 7
If I try to access files on desktop I am asked for a password. When I put in the password which is the same as that in the windows vault on both computers I am toldit is incorrect.
It may be wanting aassword for the computer rather than the workgroup but I cannot sort it out.
I was told networking was easy on windows 7 but its much harder that when my desktop was XP and laptop vista!

I attempted to upgrade my 64bit vista to windows 7 yesterday, and somehow managed to screw it up. After supposedly completing the upgrade my system restarted then told me the upgrade had failed and everything from my HDD was deleted. I then proceeded with a clean installation on my other HDD, everything went okay and it seemed fine until I restarted and it loaded vista again from my other HDD.I went into bios upon boot and tried to change the load order, however it would seem only one of my HDDs is recognised. Also, the vista HDD is now failing apparently (yay!) which I'm not too fussed about, I just want to get a working system again. I checked device manager to try and see whether my other HDD was recognised there and it is, however it would seem that both of my HDDs are exactly the same make/model. Presuming my vista HDD is on its way out, how can I sort my computer so that it boots from the 7 HDD.

I have a playsation controller adaptor which will not connect properly with windows 7.I can see that this is a fairly common problem as there are quite a few threads on other forums about this particular issue. Unfortunately having read through all of them the solutions offered (and seemingly successful for adaptors of other makes) do not work for me.A little history: worked perfectly on the machine I am using before upgrading from XP to 7. I didn't have to install specific drivers as the drivers XP provided were sufficient.Symptoms: pad/Controller is not recognised in "game controller settings" (joy.cpl found in system32 folder) which on XP allowed me to configure the pad. (There is no pad showing in the window under controller) The controller does show up in the control Panel's "devices and printers" but as "HID-compliant game controller" (it also doesn't show in the device manager under "sound, video and game controllers" only in the Human interface devices tree) The pad is therefore not recognised by, amongst others, pro evolution 11.
Checks: I know the hardware I have works as I have a clever little piece of software called joytokey which substitutes buttons pressed on the pad for keys on my keyboard. Indeed I have typed this entire post using the offending pad. (I haven't really but the point is that I could have done showing that the controller is recognised to a degree and working). Why don't you just use the joytokey software to play pro evo? I hear you ask. I do, however as good as that software is it can't mimic the two joysticks on the PS2 pad which limits the functionality I have in that game. (Like going to war and only being able to use a pistol)
The most damning piece of evidence I have to prove that the hardware works fully is that I have microsoft's very own flight simulator X and without the trickery of joytokey or any type of manual configuring I am able to control the vehicles using my playstion 2 pads. (For those of you who have never played the game, everything important is controlled using the two joysticks on the ps2 pad). Just get an Xbox controller they are not that expensive, in fact in the time it has taken you to create this thread you could have earned enough for a few of them! My, you're a talkative fella. I could buy one but I really prefer the layout and feel of the PS2 pads.
So there we have it. The pad and adaptor work perfectly but only on games that don't require Windows 7 to see the pad in the game controller settings.I have tried the closest thing I could find to the manufacturers driver and one I found at another forum, neither worked properly for my particular adaptor. (Pad still did not show up in joy.cpl and also caused the pad to vibrate uncontrollably and most functionality stopped in games I tested it in)all I need is the driver windows developed for windows XP but if this is microsofts way of forcing people to buy and use one of their XBox controllers then I'll have to admit defeat.

I have a USB external hard drive that I keep all my documents etc on (had it for years)I upgraded from Vista Home to & Home Premium then had to upgrade recently to Professional to run my Sage. Through all these upgrades my ext. drive ran fine. Occasionally the drvie letter would change if I had something else plugged into the USB, this was always easily corected in disk management by changing the drive path. The connection on the case packed up so I had to get the drive put into a new case, now when I plug it in the drive is assigned G instead of F, I tried to change the drive letter allocation in Disk Management but it won't let me as the program still thinks I have a second ext. hard drive which is labelled F. I suspect this has happened because when the usb connection broke the drive was disconnected suddenly instead of a proper eject. How do I get Disk Management to remove the inactive drive - i can't find any obvious way - eject, delete etc are all missing when I click on tools or tasks.
