Switch User Screen After Screensaver/standby Wakeup
Oct 31, 2009A very minor question. I was wondering if it's possible to show the "Welcome Screen/Switch User" screen after the computer is woken up from screensaver or standby. I know it's really easy for a user to click on the "Switch User" button on the "lock page", but still I want to make it easy for my mom.

Sep 3, 2012I have a 2 year old HP Pavilion dv6 on Windows 7, which has picked up a bit of an annoying problem recently. Every so often, the laptop just goes into standby - I will be browsing the internet or whatever and then it will just drop into standby. Once I boot it out of standby, it will usually just go to sleep again within 5 minutes.
To stop this cycle, I have to force shut it down.. I'd get it fixed in a store, but the problem doesn't always manifest itself. I can go a week without it happening and then not be able to use the laptop for a few days because it keeps playing up on me. A few possible reasons why this happens have been mentioned online:
- A problem with the power supply - which I think I can discount as it happens whether I'm on battery or plugged in.
- Overheating - possible since my CPU usually runs at 60-65 degrees, but it's run at that temperature and higher for months for some reason and that's never caused it gripe before.
- A problem with the power button
- A virus - but the free version of Avast says i'm clean
- A BIOS problem
- Something else entirely?

Jan 21, 2010I am new to Windows 7, have it on Asus EEEPC. On Windows shutdown option I have Hibernation but no standby. Sleep is grayed. On Power options I can set Hibernation options but I even on lid down options I do not see standby option.

Apr 12, 2012Basically, the screensaver won't work in Windows 7. My laptop is a 32bit system with 2GB of RAM so not old. I upgraded about a year ago from Vista to Windows 7. Symptoms: the screensaver doesn't work - the screen is just blank. When I try to change the screensaver in Control Panel and preview it, it won't preview even after 'Apply'. There are only 4 or so screensaver options such as Bubbles and Mystify but none seem to work. I am aware of a problem with the Bubbles screensaver via the internet but am not sure if this is a problem. I sometimes get an error box up when I awake the laptop (error OXc0000017). When I tried to install a new screensaver, it wouldn't install and I got the same error message/code. I have changed the power settings now so the display never goes off but I don't think this will change things.

I have configured a backup job which wakes up the laptop at midnight, takes a backup and puts laptop into standby again. All this happens with the laptop lid closed. The power scheme is configured to put laptop into standby when lid is closed.
The resume from standby, backup and suspend after backup is controlled by Windows Home Server (2003) console which is installed on the laptop. I had purchased the HP laptop in October of last year and this job used to work just fine. Sometime in March of this year, the backup stopped working.
After checking the logs and physically observing the laptop at midnight, I found that the laptop resumes from standby at the scheduled time but immediately goes into standby if the lid is closed. The backup fails. Windows event logs indicate that laptop lid close action is putting system into standby.
If the lid is open, then the laptop resumes from standby, stays awake, backup proceeds and laptop goes into standby again.
Here are my problems:
a) Why did the backup work for several months and then stopped working?
b) I have other laptops in the house running Windows 7 home premium on variety of hardware (all HP) and they do not have any issue. Even with the lid closed, they resume from standby, do a backup and go into standby again. The power scheme on all these laptops is set to put laptop into standby when lid is closed. I have verified from physically observing the laptops during backup time.
I have checked all the usual suspects like BIOS updates, driver updates, run sfc, completely deleted the Windows Home Server console from laptop and re-installed after deleting all past backups. Is there some setting that I have overlooked?
Safe Mode Or Regular Mode Wont Work For Blue Screen Of Death?

Jul 8, 2012When Windows looks like it is starting, the "Windows is loading files..." message comes up. It then goes into Startup Repair, which either can't detect problem or "Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically". I have tried pressing F8 for the safe mode menu, but none of the options there work either as selecting any of them just ends up in Startup Repair again. Sadly I have no system restore point or system image to reload. I have run the Windows Memory Diagnostic, which found no problems. I know that reloading Windows is almost certain to fix this problem, but I have a handful of files that I really, really don't want to lose by doing this. Is there any way that I can save my files?

Dec 17, 2010my laptop starts up as the "windows did not shut down properly" screen where I can start windows normal to do repair. When I start windows normally it sends me to the repair screen. And when I select system repair it just freezes at a light blue and geen screen and the only thing showing is my cursor. Ive tried to run the system in safe mode but it freezes at classpnp.sys, and eventually sends me back to the repair screen that is frozen. I don't believe I have my windows 7 installation disk for my laptop so that is out of the equation.
My brother was using my computer and said it was updating when this happened so Im not sure what caused all this.

Jan 28, 2012So I purchased a Razer Naga because I loved the idea of 12 buttons right on the side for my thumb and since I work at home and pretty much just sleep, eat, and work around this computer I only put it on Sleep Mode. But when I moved my mouse around the next day it wouldn't start up. So I unplugged it and took it back got another one. Same problem occurred. Check to see if it would wake the computer from standby and it was checked. So then I moved on to updating the Firmware. Problem still occurred. So I'm wondering is this Razer's fault or perhaps my Motherboard not being power up enough? I do have a 5 year old power supply on my high end computer that's 550 watts due to my 1000 watt dying.

Can still hear windows just my screen says "no connection with pc". Feb 13, 2011So I was using a program called TuneUp Utilities, and I used this function called the Disk Doctor to check for errors in my computer.While it was checking for errors, my computer shut down automatically and when I started it up again a black screen appears giving me the option to either load Startup Repair or Start Windows Normally. When I start Windows Normally, everything goes fine until I see the cursor. Nothing happens and then the computer restarts on it's own. I've even tried disabling restart on system failure but when I did that the computer just stayed at a dark screen until I restarted it.When I load Startup Repair, it searches for problems for like 5 minutes and then says it can't be automatically fixed. It says to remove all USB cables and everything (which I did but had no effect) and lets me have advanced recovery options.When I load advanced recovery options, all that appears is Startup Repair again.When I press F8 and do a Safe Mode, it starts up normally but once I see the mouse cursor the computer restarts.

Why Won't External Hard Drive Work In IDE Mode Through ESATA
Dec 18, 2011My motherboard is ASRock m3a770de. I built my machine 3 days ago. I have one Hiatchi 500gb internal HD, and one 1TB external HD.I am running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate Edition.After building my computer three days ago, I installed windows, and my external was not being detected through eSATA in the BIOS or in Windows "Probably need to install drivers" I said.So I put in the CD that came with my motherboard, and installed the AMD All in One Driver that was on it. Restarted, and hey, my external was showing up.Today, after installing SP1 (not sure if thats what did it), my ext hd was no longer showing up again. I reinstalled the driver on that CD. Now, I'm not sure if it even installed the first time, because it said it was currently uninstalled through the ATI catalyst installation program. But it didn't work this time. I'm not sure what got it to work the first time. But my eSATA drive was being read in IDE mode for three days. When trying to get it work the first time, I did plug it in via USB to see if it would work, maybe that had something to do with it working the first time?
Anyway, I changed my registry to start up in AHCI mode, and then went into my bios and changed my storage config to AHCI. Upon booting, windows would not load with my external HD turned on (anybody know why?), but loaded once I turned it off. Windows then installed AHCI drivers, and upon restarting, both hard drive, external and internal, were being detected as removal storage.Why can't I get my external HD to be read in IDE mode through eSATA? IT doesn't get read through the BIOS or Windows, even if i scan for new hardware.EDIT: sigh, now when I just went to reboot, it wouldn't load windows when my external hard drive was plugged in. Windows loaded when I unplugged it. Windows detected it when I plugged it back in.
