External HDD To SATA Fail
Oct 30, 2012I had a new external HDD WD My Book Essential USB 3.0 (2TB) 6 month ago. All was good until two days ago. I rebooted my computer and I won't boot up. After disconnecting WD HDD it work perfectly But after I turned my PC off, and tried to turn it on, again it won't boot up with the HDD connected AND some weird ticking noise started in HDD itself. I sounds like it's trying to boot but failing and trying again. So I disconnected, boot up the system and then plugged it in. Nothing Not in explorer, not in disk management not in Acronis program, nothing.I rebooted and it showed and Local Disk R, but I can't even start disk management or open it with explorer, or even open any program to be able to see/fix it. In the end, HDD wasn't even turning on.So the next day I called tech support of WD. They told me standard stuff, like "Disconnect, Reconnect Try another port, etc ". Nothing. By warranty they can replace it, BUT I don't care about the drive itself, I need data. In this case they can't help me. All they told me is to contact special company for that, and it's gonna cost me up to 1000$.After that call, I noticed a burning smell from HDD. It was connected to power and USB. I disconnected and I opened the case of my HDD. SATA HDD itself seams to be fine, but the connection board (with USB and power) burned.So, I connected directly via SATA to my PC. And that's when the fun starts: BIOS did not recognized it. I switched the SATA port. BIOS showed the model and everything but it gives me "Ultra DMA Mode-5 S.M.A.R.T Capable but Command Failed." Reboot.In different software... NOTHING. Reboot again: and again "Ultra DMA Mode-5 S.M.A.R.T Capable but Command Failed". Reboot. S.M.A.R.T. Command Failed... Reboot 5 times, all good. Started LiveBoot CD by Wondershare. It found my HDD and UNKNOWN. Was trying to recover data from it, program freeze. Reboot again. Was trying to fix mbr with Win 7 Boot Cd, nothing cuz it can't see were to fix mbr. Reboot. Started HDAT2. Nothing. Reboot 10 times, and HDAT2 finally can see my HDD. Before I start any test I shows me read error from UNKNOWN DEVICE. Started "hdat2 most powerful test". Nothing. No errors was found. O_o. Also I try Read MBR with the same HDAT2. Everything 0/0/0/0. So what else I can possibly try?? Oh yeah, when I connected my HDD via SATA, that "boot or not to boot" sound was still there.

Aug 7, 2012my brother's hdd in his laptop was going bad, it kept failing to boot. so i replaced it with another one. when i turned the laptop back on it started installing all the drivers for his hardware (windows was already installed on the 2nd hdd) and prompted me to reboot. after i did windows failed to start several times. i re-installed windows from scratch, and now his graphics card isn't showing up in device manager and windows cant find a driver for the network or ethernet card.

May 7, 2011i purchased a Silicon SiI3512 SATA Raid Controller purely to have 2 extra SATA ports which I am using to connect to my case's external drive bays. I have flashed the bios of the controller and updated the driver to put it in "Base" mode so it is not using RAID. I did extensive research on this and it appears that I have this part right. For now, I am trying to connect a WD1600BEVT 2.5" SATA-II hard drive to one of these ports and am having some difficulty. I can see the drive, but when I try to format the drive in Windows, or a command prompt (using the windows recovery DVD) it hangs. I am wondering if this is a compatibility issue with a SATA-II drive on a SATA-I controller, however, most of the forums I have read state that if there is a compatibility issue, the controller won't even recognize the drive. I searched around to see if there was a way to force the HDD to SATA(150), but the jumpers on this drive are for SSC and RPS. Is there a way to fix this or do I need a drive that is capable of forcing SATA-I speeds? Perhaps even a controller capable of at least SATA-II since that is the minimum of all new HDDs?

It contain only 1 single partition disk that is c drive only.Recently, i accidentally convert the c drive which contain OS into dynamic disk.After i restart the laptop, it shows the following: BootMgr is missing Please press Alt, Ctrl +del to restart Now, i not able to enter the window. I am so worry because my important data is kept inside the hard disk, and i still not yet do any back up copy on it.I searching on this forum and learnt that i need a window 7 installation disk to repair it, but my problem is the computer dealer not give me any windows 7 installation disk when i baught this laptop as their said all the driver and windows program already kept in side the harddisk.I tried to remove the laptop hardisk which is a 500GB toshiba SATA hardisk. Then, i use the other laptop with Windows XP professional with the intention to copy yhe file inside the toshiba hard disk.However, after plugged in the hard disk to the other laptop, under the disk management, it shows that the toshiba disk as : dynamic disk, unreadable.i having problem to backup the data inside the toshiba hard disk.....

Oct 25, 2011I recently built a new rig and I had a problem with one stick of memory. The other stick worked alright, but I've been getting random failures. Can bad memory be inconsistent? Right now, I can't start my OS up at all. It goes straight to the Windows Repair Launcher, which fails. When it gets there, I can either find a restore point or let it 'attempt to fix' for as long as I can endure. The restore point option results in 'instruction xxx failed. memory reference xxx failed.'This leads me to believe there is a problem with the memory. But, could it be the motherboard? I played a video game for hours last night, as well as surfed the web and ran other applications. Everything was fine, until I shut down. This isn't the first time this happened. Last time, I 'fixed' it by switching the 'good' memory stick with the bad. The bad resulted in getting the OS up, but lots of BSOD's

Sep 16, 2012Since early August all my Security updates have been failing. It adds time to each boot up period as it goes through the updates and then at the end will say it's failed and is reverting all the changes. I have already done some research on this issue and ran "sfc/scannow" as well as "chkdsk/f/r." Both seemed to go through with no problems. After that I did a Windows update and 12 updates seemed to go through with no problem until the required reboot where we're back to the same issue of failing and reverting.

Feb 27, 2011When I started my toshiba laptop this morning, it started up normally, but then it shut down. When I tried to start it up, the screen was blank, but the power light was on. After about an hour, it just shut down. I tried to start it again, and it worked fine. I then ran a diagnostic test and it said "HARDDISK DRIVE TEST FAIL" What can I do to fix this?

However, when installing a 2nd Sata drive my XP bios identifies it correctly as a Sata drive but my PC Disk management recognises it as a Removeable disk preventing me from installing Win 7. One of the drives assigned letter K often comes up as E and I have to change as application is looking for K. Another disk in this dock works fine. No problems. why this might be happening or anyway to prevent? Seems like when I go to disk management and assign K it should stay that way.

Oct 8, 2010I have tried numerous times on my PC to install Windows 7 onto my Sata Drive to no avail. Yet as soon as I plug in my IDE HD it installs fine.I have unplugged all external peripherals USB and internal Card Reader. Set my Bios ok as it sees both the Hard Drive and DVD fine (Both in the bios and during selection of hard drive during windows 7 installation). Yet when I come to install it, it craps out at a random percentage saying cannot read from source or worse yet it crawls so slow through the percentages (I really don't think Windows 7 should take 6 hours to get to 15%!!) Yet both the hard drive and dvd are fine and the disc works great on my other PC without the sata drive in.
My motherboard is a Biostar G31-M7 TE with latest bios now what is odd is that I recently updated the BIOS to the latest one so does my problem come from here or was it always going to be a problem on this board? Also when I do have Windows 7 installed on the IDE drive when I plug in ther sata drive inside the whole system goes belly up (from freezes when transferring large files to just not seeing the drive)

Dec 16, 2012 my friends laptop (which has different specs from that one, a 2,4ghz dual core, a 9M series GPU and 4gb RAM) started getting this SMART event ocurred thing like 3 years ago. So, being a dumba** back then, I thought formatting/reinstalling OS would solve the problem. So I did. Installed Windows 7 HP x86, used Driver Genius to install all drivers and SURPRISE the error was still there. So he kept the computer as it was, and surprisingly it survived all these years. Nothing happened really, he just used his laptop for his usual stuff with no problems whatsoever...weird.
But just recently he asked me to install Windows 7 HP x64, so he could use Sony Vegas Pro 12 (for some reason, Vegas 12 only exists for x64...and if there is a x86 I can't find it). So I did, and installed it...and then the problems started. The laptop is now crashing frequently, recovering from it in like 20 seconds every time. It works I guess, and you can copy around and mess with stuff on the computer, but after awhile it eventually crashes for 15-20 seconds. I have no idea why this is happening, and only then I thought of his SMART event error so I downloaded WD diagnostic tool, clicked the "view SMART data" button and everythin was right except for "re-allocated sector count" which was 117 at value, 117 at worst and 140 at threshold...could this last formatting fried his hard drive for good?
His warranty was gone even before he ever had the SMART event, he has the laptop for like 5 years now. Is it because of the x64 windows. Is there a logical reason for it not work properly on this laptop? Or was the excessive formatting that damaged the hard drive for good?

The hard drive started to fail (chkdsk showed bad sectors, S.M.A.R.T. test failed, etc.) so I got a replacement drive on warranty from Lenovo, put it in, reinstalled Win 7 and about 150 updates, restored my backed-up data, and reinstalled several applications.At some point in that tedious process, chkdsk started running on almost every reboot. I have run chkdsk /r both normally and from the Restore Environment.

I was writing something to the drive one day when the USB connection seems to be somewhat loose and the drive disconnected momentarily and reconnected itself but the file I was trying to write ended prematurely...Now when I try to use the Seagate Harddrive test tool for windows and do a Short Generic test and the result failed.. I am fear it might have been caused by the disconnection and might eventually corrupt the entire drive... I try to run chkdsk but there aren't any errors detected it seems and files seems to be accessible as normal... Is there a way to fix the harddrive without losing data in the drive or confirm the drive is indeed failing?

It is currently loaded on the 200gb Primary IDE and the other 2 are for backup and saving data. Would I be better off installing Windows 7 on the SATA drive and using both IDE drives for backup and saving data? If so is the easiest way to just disconnect the IDE drives until Windows 7 is installed then format the original OS drive to use for backup?

Jan 1, 2010Before I made the commitment to use Windows 7 as my primary OS, I figured I'd experiment in a dual boot environment. My current setup is Windows XP (x32) installed on a 500GB SATA drive. This drive has a partition for the OS and a separate partition for all of my files and data. To install Windows 7 I removed my SATA drive and (successfully) installed Windows 7 (64-bit) onto an 80GB IDE drive (controller 0, disk 0).
After the installation I shut down my system, reconnected my SATA drive, changed the BIOS boot order to look at my IDE and Windows 7 booted without a hitch. My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-K8U-939
Now, with Windows 7 running and my SATA drive connected, Windows 7 does *not* recognize the drive. It is completely missing from the disk manager. I loaded the drivers for my motherboard ((however since the MoBo is a couple years old, it doesn't have Vista or Windows 7 drivers)), it loaded quasi-successfully but spat out some error about it not being totally successful. Now, after I log into Windows 7 I receive an error that goes like,
Code: Initial ALiRAID error!!Please Check:
1) ALiRAID driver is installed
2) ALiRAID controller is connected to disk drive(s)
When I reboot my computer and switch the boot order in the BIOS to boot from my IDE drive, my system will boot into Windows XP without any problem at all. I've also switched the BIOS setting from "RAID" to "IDE" for the SATA drive and that appears to have done nothing towards Windows 7 being able to access it.
There's gotta be some way to get Windows 7 to see my SATA drive, doesn't there?

but i have a question for you, i have a second 500 gb sata hard drive which i have connected after the install which is formatted with ntfs file system from my original windows xp o/s , it shows up in device manager but will not work , windows ask me to format the drive which i dont want to do because has loads of files on which i dont want to lose.
am i missing something they both use the ntfs file system .

Cannot Install On SATA Drive

I am (currently) running Windows 7 64 ULT on my home PC. I purchased an Intel X25M 80GB SATA drive and connected it in order to benefit from the speed. The issue is that setup hangs during the "expanding files" on this drive. Looking back I have *never* been able to install windows (XP Vista or 7) on a SATA drive on my mobo.
In order to avoid confusions I did the following.Removed the 2x400GB striped drives. Removed the old PATA-IDE drive, therefore only drives available were the Optiarc DVD and the new Intel SSD.

Nov 27, 2009My setup: XP on my C-drive with 2x SATA drives as slaves.
My requirement: I want to take my drives out and just use one of my SATA drives to install WINDOWS 7. If i tell my BIOS that my new C-Drive is that SATA drive, will i have to tell it again that my old drive is an IDE when i put that back in without the new SATA drive plugged in.
My reason: I have got the new WINDOWS 7 and want to install everything and update all my programs also have a good look and learn before i start having my work on it. It is easier for me to just unplug the power leads on each drive before i start then to have to redo all my work if i mess WINDOWS 7 up and have to format. I cant afford to loose everything.
Yes i could back everything up but i need to work while this is happening if you know what i mean.
Installing From A Sata Dvd Drive
Jun 23, 2009I'm trying to install from a sata dvd drive onto an ide hard disc. I have the raid drivers for my board, x64 vista drivers to be exact.
During the install sequence I obviously get to the bit that asks me to insert a driver disc for the dvd drive. Currently the drivers are on a floppy, so insert the floppy disc and browse to the drivers. windows 7 then starts to load the drivers them fails with a message stating it can't find find drivers for this drive.
Has anyone else tried installing from a sata drive, and if so how did you get on?
