I recently installed a game application which I believe may have contained viruses/malware.Later on I got a hard disk S.M.A.R.T. 301 error, and had to replace my disk... Just asking, but can applications cause the error I described above, and the hard drive to fail? Do they have anything to do with 301 error I got?

My laptop is Acer with Windows 7 home premium 64 bit OS. It contain only 1 single partition disk that is c drive only.Recently, i accidentally convert the c drive which contain OS into dynamic disk.After i restart the laptop, it shows the following: BootMgr is missing Please press Alt, Ctrl +del to restart Now, i not able to enter the window. I am so worry because my important data is kept inside the hard disk, and i still not yet do any back up copy on it.I searching on this forum and learnt that i need a window 7 installation disk to repair it, but my problem is the computer dealer not give me any windows 7 installation disk when i baught this laptop as their said all the driver and windows program already kept in side the harddisk.I tried to remove the laptop hardisk which is a 500GB toshiba SATA hardisk. Then, i use the other laptop with Windows XP professional with the intention to copy yhe file inside the toshiba hard disk.However, after plugged in the hard disk to the other laptop, under the disk management, it shows that the toshiba disk as : dynamic disk, unreadable.i having problem to backup the data inside the toshiba hard disk.....

After about an hour, it just shut down. I tried to start it again, and it worked fine. I then ran a diagnostic test and it said "HARDDISK DRIVE TEST FAIL" What can I do to fix this?

View 9 Replies View Related my friends laptop (which has different specs from that one, a 2,4ghz dual core, a 9M series GPU and 4gb RAM) started getting this SMART event ocurred thing like 3 years ago. So, being a dumba** back then, I thought formatting/reinstalling OS would solve the problem. So I did. Installed Windows 7 HP x86, used Driver Genius to install all drivers and SURPRISE the error was still there. So he kept the computer as it was, and surprisingly it survived all these years. Nothing happened really, he just used his laptop for his usual stuff with no problems whatsoever...weird.
But just recently he asked me to install Windows 7 HP x64, so he could use Sony Vegas Pro 12 (for some reason, Vegas 12 only exists for x64...and if there is a x86 I can't find it). So I did, and installed it...and then the problems started. The laptop is now crashing frequently, recovering from it in like 20 seconds every time. It works I guess, and you can copy around and mess with stuff on the computer, but after awhile it eventually crashes for 15-20 seconds. I have no idea why this is happening, and only then I thought of his SMART event error so I downloaded WD diagnostic tool, clicked the "view SMART data" button and everythin was right except for "re-allocated sector count" which was 117 at value, 117 at worst and 140 at threshold...could this last formatting fried his hard drive for good?
His warranty was gone even before he ever had the SMART event, he has the laptop for like 5 years now. Is it because of the x64 windows. Is there a logical reason for it not work properly on this laptop? Or was the excessive formatting that damaged the hard drive for good?
I have a Lenovo T500 laptop running Win 7 Pro x64. The hard drive started to fail (chkdsk showed bad sectors, S.M.A.R.T. test failed, etc.) so I got a replacement drive on warranty from Lenovo, put it in, reinstalled Win 7 and about 150 updates, restored my backed-up data, and reinstalled several applications.At some point in that tedious process, chkdsk started running on almost every reboot. I have run chkdsk /r both normally and from the Restore Environment.

It is an autorun.inf virus which creates shortcuts of all my folders on my drive and makes all the actual folders hidden. I believe it is refereed to as the recycler virus. I have not plugged the drive into my Windows 7 OS, and don't plan on doing so. I have Ubuntu installed however and plan to use that to format my drive as from what I've read autorun.inf viruses dont affect linux. Is this true? If I plug my hard drive into the Ubuntu OS will everything my fine?
My only Windows DVD was an upgrade disk I used before on the same computer a few months before. I used the command prompt on the DVD to create a NTFS partition for the OS to load onto. After that everything installed and worked fine until I tried to activate use the upgrade key, it says that it can only be for upgrading and not clean installations. I was under the impression that since I already used the key to upgrade on the computer, I would be able to use it again. Will I need to buy a new install disk or will I be able to activate the OS another way? If I do need to buy a new install disk, would it be possible for me to simply find a X16-96072 Windows 7 Home Premium iso and use the activation code that my computer came with to provide the upgrade code with?

I was writing something to the drive one day when the USB connection seems to be somewhat loose and the drive disconnected momentarily and reconnected itself but the file I was trying to write ended prematurely...Now when I try to use the Seagate Harddrive test tool for windows and do a Short Generic test and the result failed.. I am fear it might have been caused by the disconnection and might eventually corrupt the entire drive... I try to run chkdsk but there aren't any errors detected it seems and files seems to be accessible as normal... Is there a way to fix the harddrive without losing data in the drive or confirm the drive is indeed failing?

View 2 Replies View Relatedwhy dvd's fail to burn/close out while playing a game?if the video resolution flickers in ANY way out of "standard" bounds (like odd resolutions for older games) the dvd just quits burning light goes off.the best thing i can play on my rig is angry birds space.i have tried this with several burning proggys and different games,with always the same result; lock up of the burner and or program hard reset required,or the burn light simply goes off and the program is 'hung' but can be ejected.another thing too is when i insert a dvd to burn i will NOT burn unless auto-run pops up, THEN i start the program i want to burn with AFTER and ONLY after the auto-run appears, but that is 80% of the time. seriously, this is a brand new machine, actually there are 3 brand new custom machines in my house and have swapped burners, video cards - you name the combo, i have done it.

I recently built a new rig and I had a problem with one stick of memory. The other stick worked alright, but I've been getting random failures. Can bad memory be inconsistent? Right now, I can't start my OS up at all. It goes straight to the Windows Repair Launcher, which fails. When it gets there, I can either find a restore point or let it 'attempt to fix' for as long as I can endure. The restore point option results in 'instruction xxx failed. memory reference xxx failed.'This leads me to believe there is a problem with the memory. But, could it be the motherboard? I played a video game for hours last night, as well as surfed the web and ran other applications. Everything was fine, until I shut down. This isn't the first time this happened. It adds time to each boot up period as it goes through the updates and then at the end will say it's failed and is reverting all the changes. I have already done some research on this issue and ran "sfc/scannow" as well as "chkdsk/f/r." Both seemed to go through with no problems. After that I did a Windows update and 12 updates seemed to go through with no problem until the required reboot where we're back to the same issue of failing and reverting.

View 1 Replies View RelatedSo, I have a i7 2600K system with a solid state disk as the boot drive, and an older (c2008) Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB drive as the data drive for programs (that I deem as not worthy of the quick load times). The hard drive has given me some errors over time, and I bought a hard disk to replace it (a Hitachi 1TB). The issue I'm having is that the fact that Windows 7 puts a small (100MB) partition on the F3, and for some reason, even though I'm running Acronis 2012, it doesn't seem to be able to clone the F3 over to the Hitachi. I've also tried Drive XML, and for my 2 hour wait, I only managed to acquire a boot error. Thankfully, I've not done anything rash to destroy the data on the F3, but given the fact that I've seen corrupted files in Steam from that drive, I'm not will to trust it long term with my data. I really need to get the data onto that Hitachi, though... Anyone have any advice for upgrading the HDD in a SSD/HDD system? I don't really feel like it should be so hard, especially if I've bought Acronis True Image, but maybe they haven't designed their product to handle this scenario quite yet?

I have a HP Touchsmart IQ500. Turning my computer PC on today, all I got was a blue HP invent screen with setup, boot menu, system recovery, and system diagnosis, and I could not get past it. I entered the BIOS and figured out that the hard drive was listed as "not installed." Pretty sure that is the main problem.I tried a system restore (with the Windows 7 install disc), but I guess the computer couldn't read the hard drive enough to enter safe mode (I tried restarting and F8ing several times). I put in an external hard drive, and the BIOS read it; however, windows does not allow you to partition an OS on a hard drive.

It's a Samsung 1TB drive. I also have a 64 Solid-state drive in there as my primary hard drive that Windows was installed on and a couple of programs are installed on. View 3 Replies View Related[code] Now here is what has been going on since 26/05, While I was playing "World of Tanks" the game froze, sound was stuck and screen turned black with white stripes, I had to force a restart, the minidump was accusing a dll file of nvidia's which when I searched for on the internet it sounded like a random hiccup of Nvidia and it only happened once so I ignored it. But the game started crashing to the desktop since then but not very often, it never did that with my older pc, so I don't know if it's from the game side or my side.Yesterday around 8pm, I was about to transfer a 7gig folder from my main disk to the storage disk, as soon as I opened the partition that I was transfering to, I had a blue screen saying only "Unknown hard error", I force restarted and the MB resat the Bios and it restarted again and since then windows wouldn't boot, it kept asking for repair and during that repair it said "System was unable to boot" several times and after the many repair runs it kept saying it failed to fix the problem.Then I unplugged my storage HDDs and only left the system HDD, booted from windows 7 DVD and tried to repair but still said it couldn't fix the problem, in the report it said there was a problem with ci.dll, so I started "command" tried these commands (bootrec.exe /fixboot, bootrec.exe /fixmbr, bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd) after that I restarted and windows booted perfectly, right after that I shut down the computer, plugged in the 2 other HDDs, windows booted perfectly then all of the sudden, the keyboard wasn't responding (not even it's leds were working) same thing with my mouse, I looked at the HDD led and it wasn't doing anything at all, no small flickers or anything, so I force restarted, it booted like normal, I started to transfer a folder to 1 of my storage HDDs, opened up firefox, it was acting really slow, everything I was doing on it was lagging although nothing was draining the CPU or ram or anything, opened few pages, when the transfer was about to finish, the pc restarted.
After the restart, the event log says "kernal power" event id 41, category 63 and it didn't give me any minidumps. Anyway I went to sleep around 3AM, left my downloads running and was hopping nothing would happen but something sure happened, the event log says at 4:30 AM "The Windows Modules Installer service entered the stopped state." then no new events till 6:45 AM which was a warning saying "TCP/IP has chosen to restrict the scale factor due to a network condition. This could be related to a problem in a network device and will cause degraded throughput." No other events till I had waken up at 10:37 and found the monitor turned off not responding, HDD led completely off, no flickers, basically nothing was responding.So here I'm don't know what the hell am I supposed to do, I have a decent knowledge regarding windows problems, but this problem is too open and wide, is it 1 of my hard disks? is it the lonely GPU I have right now? is it the ram? is it the CPU? I need some guidance on how to eliminate each of them.before the MB resat the Bios, the CPU was overclocked to 4.2GHz and I tested it many times and it was very stable, so when the system hanged after the boot problem was fixed, there was no overclocking involved, there was no heating issue, temps were normal, I have a 1000w plus gold certified PSU.
Have all updates. after about 10 mins of play sound get weird and game freezes entire system in a sound loop that can only be fixed with hard reset. Disc and online auth. tried on installation. changed #of speakers in settings to 0 and 6, its a 5.1. No other game gives me problems.
