SATA-II Drive On SATA Raid Controller?

May 7, 2011

i purchased a Silicon SiI3512 SATA Raid Controller purely to have 2 extra SATA ports which I am using to connect to my case's external drive bays. I have flashed the bios of the controller and updated the driver to put it in "Base" mode so it is not using RAID. I did extensive research on this and it appears that I have this part right. For now, I am trying to connect a WD1600BEVT 2.5" SATA-II hard drive to one of these ports and am having some difficulty. I can see the drive, but when I try to format the drive in Windows, or a command prompt (using the windows recovery DVD) it hangs. I am wondering if this is a compatibility issue with a SATA-II drive on a SATA-I controller, however, most of the forums I have read state that if there is a compatibility issue, the controller won't even recognize the drive. I searched around to see if there was a way to force the HDD to SATA(150), but the jumpers on this drive are for SSC and RPS. Is there a way to fix this or do I need a drive that is capable of forcing SATA-I speeds? Perhaps even a controller capable of at least SATA-II since that is the minimum of all new HDDs?

Changed The SATA Controller From AHCI To Raid SATA Result = FAILED?

Aug 10, 2010

Very little, all the parts were shipped here about four days ago and I spent a couple of hours putting them together. I ran into a hiccup when Windows 7 Home Premium would not get past the extracting phase of the installation, kicking up the error in this thread. I began the first install on a 20GB partition, when that failed I tried just installing it on a single partition. When that failed I tried removing all the partitions and just installing on the unformatted drive, in it's entirety (seemed weird but others said they had luck with this).Testing Methodology:

At the end of each attempted solution I tried to install Windows again. My keyboard is a USB keyboard. All of my boot testing is done with a bootable USB that I have running MS-DOS 6.22. What I Have Tried:Solution 1: First I went into the bios and changed the SATA controller from AHCI to Raid SATA Result = FAILEDSolution 2: I tried burning OEM Windows disk from Microsoft to an iso at the lowest speed possible for my DVD burner (4x).Result = FAILEDSolution 3: At this point I had created and deleted so many partitions I was concerned it may be having an effect on the install. So I went to Samsung's website and grabbed their HDD utility tool. I figured let's kill two birds with one stone and test the drive while also restoring it to it's original state. So I did a low level format and then ran the HDD diagnostic. All came back with no errors. Result = FAILED

On to memory...Solution 4: I downloaded Microsoft's Memory Diagnostic Tool and let it run overnight. It returned no errors. So I decided to use MemTest86 4.1 and let it run for 10 passes, I did find errors then. As of now I am running each module of memory one by one to determine if it is a problem with them or the sockets on the motherboard. So far I have been unable to reproduce the errors I got when both modules were running together. As a precaution I double checked the motherboards specifications on the socket order for memory, all is to specs. Result = [PENDING]What's Next:After my current memory test ends, I plan on checking my BIOS to see if the correct memory speeds were detected in the auto detection. If at that point I'm still unable to reproduce the memory errors, I'll put both memory modules back into the system and run the testing again to see if I can reproduce the errors I got the first time.

Flashing Bios On An Adaptec 1220 SATA Drive Controller

May 26, 2009

I'm going to install RC1 in the next few days.

I was looking to test the stability within RC1 of an adaptec 1220SA card I have to control the system drives. I have the Vista 64bit driver for the card as this is the newest listed.

I have created a recovery disc in beta build 7000 and hope to use this to boot into a DOS shell and follow the instructions given on the adaptec site:

This is the BIOS release v6.0-0 Build 2330 for the Adaptec SATA II RAID 1220SA Controller.

This BIOS should only be used together with Driver v1.6.12086 in Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista.

This self-extracting archive includes the flash utility, the BIOS image file and the Release Notes.

Caution: If the BIOS update fails with an error message "unable to find file" or "target controller does not match", please see ASK Answer ID 15241

Installation Instruction: This file is self extracting and will unzip to the directory adaptec1220sa. Copy the expanded files to a floppy diskette. The expanded files can also be copied to a USB device or CD-R.

Shut down the operating system and reboot to DOS from a bootable floppy disk, USB device or CD-R. Insert the media with the update files. Run the flash utility program named AFU.EXE included in this download to backup the current BIOS and flash the new BIOS image.

I'm hoping to expand the bios update file onto a cd for the second drive or alternatively stick it on a USB stick.

My question is this, when I am in the dos shell, what do I do!

I suddenly realised that i've never had a need to use the command line

Booting From SATA RAID 0

Nov 25, 2009

I am about to acquire a couple (or more) SSD's for an ultra-fast and spacious enough SATA RAID array. Right now I'm thinking RAID 0.

Thing is, I heard by some people that Win7 can't boot from a SATA RAID 0 array, although I am unclear as to whether that is from ALL SATA RAID 0's, or just a few, or an installation error from the users claiming this.

I also haven't found any compatibility lists, which leaves me completely in the dark.

If Win7 can't boot from SATA RAID 0, can it boot from a hardware SATA RAID 5? I'd imagine that any hardware RAID solution would be OK?

SATA 3 Not Working On Asus P6X58D-E Motherboard With SATA III Support?

Jun 27, 2012

Yesterday I had a PC technician around to see why my PC was not booting-up properly and also to change my SSD to a larger SSD. As I am visually challenged I cannot do hardware upgrades etc, so I got a Techie guy in. We used Zinstall HDD by-the-way and I would highly recommend this application for such a job plus, it is extremely fast.Anyway, while he was diagnosing my boot-up issue he discovered I had a malfunctioning network card; while removing this, he noticed all the SATA settings were set to SATA 2.When he reset these to SATA 3, the PC would not start-up! When he set them again to SATA 2 there was no problem and it worked fine?

SATA RAID Driver - Windows 7 Cannot Be Installed To This Disc

Gigabyte GA-EP45T-Extreme
Processor : Intel Quad Q9400 LGA775
Ram : 4gb
Hard Drives : 3 x 1 Tb Seagate
Video Card : Radeon HD 4890

I've enabled the raid 5 in the BIOS. I've downloaded the driver from the Gigabyte Disc onto a flash drive. When I load Windows 7 it says " Windows cannot be installed to this disc. This computers hardware may not support booting to this disc. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computers BIOS menu". I've checked and rechecked the BIOS. I also downloaded the MSM64 Driver in the Gigabyte disc and that the one I copied to the flash drive.

RAID 1 Gigabyte SATA Cannot Find The Array During Windows 7 Install

Sep 10, 2012

I have just bought two brand new WD 500 GB RE4 HDD's and connected them coorectly for RAID 1. I have changed the BIOS and Pressed Ctrl+F to create the RAID and this has been successful. When installing Windows you obviously get to the aprt where you need to load the floppy drivers to locate the drives...

I have downloaded ever driver from the Gigabyte support drive and loaded them onto a USB, not one driver can be seen when the USB is "Browsed" too...

How important is it that the drivers are on a floppy, as I do not have a floppy drive or access to a floppy and drives. Also what driver should be downloading as I tried the 3.2.1540.17 one and that was not seen, so I just downloaded them all in an attempt for success.

Switching BIOS SATA RAID/AHCI Setting Causes BSOD At Windows Start

Mar 30, 2012

I just changed my disk setup from:

1 SATA HDD Primary OS Disk
2x SATA HDD Backup Disks in RAID 1

TO:

1 SATA SSD Primary OS Disk
1 SATA HDD Backup Disk
[No RAID]

Everything worked great, no problem. So, since I don't have a RAID array anymore, I decided that I could change my BIOS setting to AHCI instead of RAID. I have a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R v1.0 mobo.

These are my steps:Settings > Integrated Peripherals > "SATA RAID/AHCI Mode" = RAID
--> Changed this setting to AHCI Reboot Windows Start screen shows up, but as the color orbs are spinning into focus, BSOD and immediate restart Repeated reboot several times, same outcome
Next Step:Launch BIOS settings Integrated Peripherals > "Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode" = RAID
--> Changed this setting to AHCI Reboot Windows Start screen shows up, but as the color orbs are spinning into focus, BSOD and immediate restart Repeated reboot several times, same outcome
Switch both settings back to RAID, reboot, and Windows starts up just fine, no issues.

What am I missing? Why can't I set it to AHCI mode without BSODs?

Install SATA Controller Driver

Nov 5, 2009

I've just bought parts and collected a new PC system. My Motherboard is AsRock M3A785GXH/128 ASRock > Products > M3A785GXH/128M

and regarding to the manufacturer it should be Windows 7 hardware ready.

But I can't install Windows 7 pro 64 bit on my new system. The Windows 7 installation application can't see my harddrives and want a driver to them. I assume that should be a driver for the SATA controller on the motherboard. I've tryed to use the drivers on the motherboard cd-rom and tryed to use the drivers froms asrock homepage, but Windows 7 wont accept them.

I have contacted AsRock about this issue, but I'm wating for an answer and hoped that you guys might has seen this problem before, and will answer quicker than AsRock Support

I should say that I cant install Windows Vista Business 64bit without any problems at all.

Adaptec SATA Controller Drivers

Mar 12, 2009

I have an adaptec sata controller card, which I was contemplating using for running my two raid drives.

I know that there are Vista 64 drivers availiable to download, and so my question is this,

will Vista 64 disk drivers work with Windows 7 Beta build 7000?

I thought i'd ask here first, as it seems silly to reformat and save disc images, reinstall etc, if someone here already knows the answer.

Also, is there a simple way transferring all the user's data and programme data if I wanted to upgrade to a newer build, as obviously backing up the disc image won't work I suppose with a newer build of 7?

Can't Install On SSD Via SIL3114 SATA Controller

May 24, 2011

The mobo's kinda old, and not the greatest; the builtin SATA only works for Raid, so I put in a PCI sata card with the SIL3114 chipset. The computer now sees the 64GB SSD Patriot HD I'm trying to use for her C drive (The SSD is a leftover from a different project... I thought it'd lend some additional performance to help make up for the 1.2 ghz cpu). When I get into Windows setup, though, Windows 7 does not recognize the drive, and none of the drivers that came with the PCI card seem to work. I suppose I should have double checked before buying the SATA PCI card to find one that has native Windows 7 drivers, but I thought the stone age days of needing SATA drivers were over, guess I was wrong!

SATA AHCI Controller, IDE DVD RW Slow Speed

Aug 27, 2012

I have 2 IDE DVD drives (TEAC DV-W516D DVD/CD ReWriter, and TSSTcorp DVD-ROM SH-D162C DVD/CD Reader). Teac is capable of 16X DVD writting. My motherboard Gigabyte Z77-D3H has only SATA II/III slots. So I connected each IDE optical drive to motherboard's SATA II slot(s) using IDE to SATA I adapters (1 adapter per optical drive). Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit is running, and SATA AHCI is being used.

My question:

SATA I = 1.5Gbps = 187.5MB/s (adapter capability) is faster then DVD 16X writting = 177.28Mbps = 22.16MB/s.
TDK DVD+R disks tested OK (on other PC) for 16X capability.
Why is Nero reporting of only 2.4X and 4X writting speeds?

Cannot Find Intel 5 Series 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller Drivers For Windows 7

I'm attempting to install a retail copy of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit (VPCEB15FM) or "PCG-71312L" on this laptop. However, this message appears: "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now." The problem is that I cannot find the Intel 5 Series 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller drivers for Windows 7 64-Bit to put on a floppy or USB drive. I've combed the Sony website and Google and the only Intel 5 Series 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller Drivers that can be placed on a floppy or USB are for Windows XP. Without the TXTSETUP.OEM, I'm dead in the water! The 64-Bit drivers (INDOTH-00215023-0042.EXE) are for an already installed Windows 7. BTW guys, the the BIOS settings on this laptop is as anemic as it gets, so there is really no way to optimize there..
