On my desktop I have a few shortcuts that have the UAC Shield on them. I assume this means that you must have administrative privileges to run it (correct me if I'm wrong). If it's important for any reason, I am the administrator. How can I get rid of that pesky icon?

I have tried to change the program using internet explorer too, and this won't work. How can I find the right file opener and where is it on my pc?

These icons are: documents, libraries, control panel, my documents, desktop. I normally delete icons by right clicking on the icon & selecting "delete." However, when I do this to "my documents" it starts to delete the data not the icon. I'm now afraid to delete the any of the above because I don't want to loose the information. I tried using "personalize" from the desktop but no luck.

View 1 Replies View Relatedafter several days of cleaning up a clients laptop of around 150 viruses, i think it's now clean. But as always, viruses have effects after they have been removed, and in this case its that it has removed all the links to programs in the all programs list.All the folders are there, but no links inside them. I have been googling this for multiple hours and the only thing i have found is to restore them using a folder called 'smtmp', well this laptop doesn't have a folder by that name anywhere on the laptop. Also i have ran Unhide.exe.

Mwssenger", after the uninstall is complete if i run a "search" there are all kinds of files left behind. Then if i try and remove them manually some say "cannot read" or "you don't have permission".I guess what i want to know is, what is the best way to remove a program without leaving any files behind or am i just going to have to live with the left behind files on my pc?
View 2 Replies View RelatedJust downloaded the latest Java Version 7, no problems.However, when l tried to get rid of my older version, Java(tm) version 6 Update 32, it says that the installer is missing a dll (no name mentioned) and cannot continue.Did this via the add/remove programs in control panel, and also Revo Uninstaller,but the same message appears.Then tried downloading Java 6_32 again in case that was somehow corrupt, but it wouldn't install because of this un-named missing dll!I suppose l could just delete the directory concerned but surely that would leave remnants behind as opposed to a clean uninstall.

Recently was infected with a virus, which I removed with Kaspersky, but now all of my program folders are empty and / or missing when I hit Start -All Programs. I believe this is self-inflicted. I'm running Windows 7/64 on a Dell N7010 laptop. It has a OS (C:) drive (58.5GB) and a Local Disk (D:)drive (527GB). I originally found the "C" drive becoming full. Not being overly computer savy, I tried to move program files and any large files I could locate to the "D" drive. Everything seemed to work fine, until this virus. Now I believe the computer is reverting back to the original location of these files on the "C" drive, and I'm not sure on how to link them back to my All Programs menu.

For example her sage shortcut will not open as normal and opens up as if it should be a picture. The same goes for other links such as calculator in the start menu.

Last night I checked the little flag to see if any problems needed fixing and i can't for the life of me remember what it said but i launched it and it started checking for problem's it even told me what shortcut's i haven't used in a while. View 4 Replies View RelatedI can use some help in understanding and fixing a vanished program icon. I'm running APC Personal 2.2 on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Up until I noticed the other day the APC icon which was customized to show on taskbar did and was. Yesterday I noticed the icon gone. I ran it manually and the last recorded event was 9/1/10 and there have been at least one since then. I turned off the display icon and then turned it on an it appeared on the taskbar. Rebooted, not there. Used CCleaner to check startup programs and it showed that the program was listed to start. I disabled it and then re-enabled it and got a pop up from my firewall about it contacting home. Rebooted and it still did not appear.I feel as if the program is not running until I turn it on manually even though it says it is in the configurations section of the program.

I was experimenting with DPI Scaling and changed from 125% to 150%. Didn't like that so returned to 125% and when I returned to the desktop, all of the program icons had a generic icon that appears to be overlaid. Haven't been able to find anything to return the icons to normal.

I just loaded windows 7 64 bit os and I am having problem with the taskbar. When I open some programs like my anti virus software it will not open but the icon pops up in the task bar. When I run the mouse over the icon a small screen comes up over the icon but clicking on it will still not open the program. The little screen just disappears. Even when you go to explorer and try to open the program it still won't open. I have several programs that has this problem.

Now all of the icons on my desktop and the start menu are Explorer shortcuts although they are completely different programs.
I did a stupid thing- installed a "free" program then realized they were going to charge me to actually use it, so I immediately uninstalled it but have discovered there is a notification icon left that I would like to uninstall as well but cannot figure out how to do so. Am including some computer specs.

Try to open few iexplorer instances and then in taskbar properties in the "taskbar button" dropdown select "Combine when taskbar is full" . Now hover over the explorer icon it displays blank preview. Please view attachment for further details.

I have set my Windows 7 installation so that ExpressIt is the default program to open these files. Double-clicking an .exp file should therefore open that CD label in the ExpressIt program.However, when I double-click an .exp file, the ExpressIt program does not open so that I can work with the file. If I run the ExpressIt program first, then 'Open' the file from within the program, it all works fine.(The problem with this 'workaround' is that when going to Open the file, its default directory is nowhere near the directories containing my .exp files and takes ages to browse to, so I don't want to do it like that).

I'm still connected to the internet though and when I click on the icon, it opens up to show my connection (that is working). Why is it doing this? I've tried googling it, no use. It's not really a big deal, but knowing if I'm connected without having to click on the icon is nice.
