Recently was infected with a virus, which I removed with Kaspersky, but now all of my program folders are empty and / or missing when I hit Start -All Programs. I believe this is self-inflicted. I'm running Windows 7/64 on a Dell N7010 laptop. It has a OS (C:) drive (58.5GB) and a Local Disk (D:)drive (527GB). I originally found the "C" drive becoming full. Not being overly computer savy, I tried to move program files and any large files I could locate to the "D" drive. Everything seemed to work fine, until this virus. Now I believe the computer is reverting back to the original location of these files on the "C" drive, and I'm not sure on how to link them back to my All Programs menu.
I removed a virus from my friends e machine net book a week or so ago it was the system tool 2012 virus.it was removed fully and have checked this via AV and malwarebytes etc.but since then the internet always finds wifif points and connects but always says limited connection.

I restarted the computer, was welcomed by the Asus menu screen first and then when it goes to load windows, it says "loading windows files" and then goes to the automatic repair feature. It says corrupt file in problem details and proceeds to conclude that it can't fix it. In the advanced features, I have tried the startup repair with no luck, the system restore with no luck - tried all restore points listed and after many many 30 min intervals, it comes back that it cannot restore to the previous state. There are no disk images and no memory problems. Command Prompt will run (although one time it did not and simply shut down). I booted from DVD and tried repair from that with no more luck than before, however, did find it strange that when it looked for the windows installation it found one called windows and one called Microsoft Windows - same partition size, all details the same, not sure what's up with that.
I followed the info under Windows cannot start/.exe files cannot run forum up until ubunto is concerned something about the cd and usb running I can get it to make the mbr.bin file but can't get it to recognize the usb to put it on to check it out or the balance of what's next? Also, at the Automatic System repair it reads:
It doesn't identify an actual corrupt file name it says it can't determine the root of the problem.Tried to run Windows 7 upgrade from the disk but because I'm not in windows that won't work and also because I'm running SP1 and I don't have the disk for SP1.I've downloaded Unetbootin and Ubontu but don't know how to work them to get things fixed I've also tried unloading the windows update cache but still nothing because prior to this problem it was failing on all windows updates and have noticed other people comment that that was their problem - still no luck.
I had one of these nasty system restore viruses and managed to get it off by running two different Malware programs each two times, where i had to get creative and load it using a USB stick and change the names to actually get rid of all the files.I then ran a system restore to the point just before this thing got on my computer and then half my folders returned. When I did the Unhide to Show the rest, they came back but are faded out or half lit. Office files won't open so I am assuming I need to re-install but before I do anything else, how do I get the files to show fully? Computer also will not start in normal mode, only safe. Got it to at least boot in Safe with Networking on this last round.

I recently removed a fake windows restore virus and now, unlike before, when I select hibernate, the laptop actually just shuts down. When I restart everything I was working is gone. Obviously something is corrupted. Is there a way to repair that? To get rid of the virus I used a combination of Webroot, a program called trojan-killer and system restore.
I have two external harddrives which I'm using for archiving purposes, because of that they are turned off most of the time. I have some shortcuts on the desktop to some directories on these external harddisks.Windows occasionally removes these desktop shortcuts. It happens when the harddisks are turned off. I think it thinks that the shortcuts are broken and no longer needed, and tries to clean the desktop up.
Our PC internet quit working a few days ago. Our wireless laptop and Ipods work. After some (hours) of playing, I noticed our homepage was set to something Babylon. So realized we had some virus issues after research. I have run SpyBot S&D, SAS and Malwarebytes- all came up with some various serious threats. CouponBar, Babylon, I want it! etc. These programs seemed to have removed all the problems, but I still do not have access. My LAN can find my network, but says "no internet access" the wireless does not connect either on this PC.
My computer knowledge is minimal but after comparing various ipconfig screens, it seems to have something to do with the IP addresses. I read that 169.254...is not good. I disabled IPV6 and when obtaining IP addresses automatically didn't work- I typed in the ones listed on the details part of the adapter. I recently removed the Windows 7 Recovery virus, but now a bunch of my start menu shortcuts are just empty folders (no shortcut to Word/Excel for example).
I'm trying to fix my girlfriend's Windows 7 laptop after she had a virus/malware infection. I'm pretty sure we've successfully cleared the virus (an updated/full scan with Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware in safe mode comes up clean). However, we have had no Internet access since the infection. The wireless router/connection itself is fine (I connect to it daily with my laptop, as I am to write this post) but her laptop won't connect to it, we can't browse any web pages.I may have made the problem worse in trying to resolve it. I stupidly followed the advice on a forum for some registry edits for Windows XP--deleting WinSock and WinSock2 from the registry and then restarting the computer in hopes they'd re-register themselves. Unfortunately, WinSock2 re-appeared but WinSock did not. I'm wondering if this has created a new problem (or compounded the problems we were already having).In diagnostics, we currently get the following report: "Wireless Network Connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration." I am attempting to install Avery Wizard 4.0 but apparently there are still traces of 3.1 somewhere because when I try to install 4.0 I get the message "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available, insert Avery 3.1 disk. I have no such disk and the old 3.1 version does not appear in the program removal file, so how can I get rid of this message
after several days of cleaning up a clients laptop of around 150 viruses, i think it's now clean. But as always, viruses have effects after they have been removed, and in this case its that it has removed all the links to programs in the all programs list.All the folders are there, but no links inside them. I have been googling this for multiple hours and the only thing i have found is to restore them using a folder called 'smtmp', well this laptop doesn't have a folder by that name anywhere on the laptop. Also i have ran Unhide.exe.
my machine is funky; when i double-click on any shortcut, program, or photo it will not open. i have to right click and select open. it is most annoying. anyone know how to fix?
I had the pceu virus and have managed to get rid of that completely and now everything works fine except when I startup windows, after I logon there would just be a black screen and nothing else. I can get everything to work by pressing ctrl + alt + del and start task manager. Also, pressing the windows button does not open the start menu. Any ideas on how to solve this
On my desktop I have a few shortcuts that have the UAC Shield on them. I assume this means that you must have administrative privileges to run it (correct me if I'm wrong). If it's important for any reason, I am the administrator. How can I get rid of that pesky icon?

but ever since i installed norto n360. 2 minutes? i hate resource hogging programs.
I am looking for an anti virus that is super great that barely affects your pc boot up (or no effects at all to make pc boot faster) and well, not a resource hog that makes ur computer crash.
so any suggestions for what antivirus programs (i need people who actually tried the product and has experienced it, not just suggestions without knowing) fits what i am looking for? i am currently using norton 360 3.0 its good but slows my laptop.
I have no idea ho i did this but all of my startup programs on start menu as well as desktop shotcuts they end in .ink? And all of it has the logo for VLc media player? so basically when i click it it loads on that program but it will not load it as it only does media files. And all the time I have to right click to say open file location then it finally loads the program. So my question is how do I put it all back to normal? I'll post a screenshot so you can better understand what I am talking about.
My mate at work as a bit of a problem, and dosnt know how she did it. She is on windows 7 and for some reason all her shortcuts now open up in windows picture gallery. For example her sage shortcut will not open as normal and opens up as if it should be a picture. The same goes for other links such as calculator in the start menu.
I'm wondering if it's possible to create or modify shortcuts that will open more than one thing. For instance I would like to open "tech overview" from my computer and it would open: 1: Control Panel 2: Manage Computer 3: System 4: Device Manager
And hopefully I would be able to add or remove things from the list to make it even more modified over time. Another example would be to open "my website" from my computer and it would open: 1: Explorer view of camera shot images 2: Explorer view of htdocs for the website 3: Explorer view of images directory 4: Explorer view of recent downloads 5: Dreamweaver
My Windows 7 account has started freezing not long after startup. It works in safe mode. My virus checker has failed so I can not do a virus check. In safe mode I can not re-install a virus checker. I have run the Ashampoo register checker and corrected all the faults. bar reinstalling the operating system which was an upgrade from Vista I am not sure what to do.
For sometime now I've been attempting to fix a laptop that I have that was used by my sister. The laptop is a Compaq Presario CQ61 running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I believe the computer has a virus but cannot actually find out for sure if it does or not. I have ran many virus scans with multiple virus protections and still I'm getting blue screens of death, major jamming, as well as occasional start up fails. The computer jams up so badly that I can't use it for even simple tasks. If I try to up the start menu or any folders the computer jams up for about a minute before it responds. If I try to get on the web nothing at all will load no matter what web browser I'm using. The computer will also freeze up completely at random times and the only way to get it to respond is to restart it.

If I do this, how can I backup my program files that I have?Is there a way to drop them onto a back up hard drive, then just move them to the new fresh O.S.
