May 27, 2011I recently removed the Windows 7 Recovery virus, but now a bunch of my start menu shortcuts are just empty folders (no shortcut to Word/Excel for example).

Nov 26, 2011I have just formated my old windows 7 home premium and got windows 7 ultimate x32 , i downloaded the game i usually play online (C&C Renegade) when i nearly finish inputing all the information in the installation of the game , it said that something is missing in windows , i believe my windows lost some resources , the game cannot detect the folder that shortcuts gets created in for the startmenu , i believe the folder name is startmenu/programs,although i have that already , but is there anything else required to install shortcuts in windows 7 ultimate ?

Jul 19, 2010This morning I noticed that my Start Menu | All Programs list had some shortcuts that were duplicates. In other words, there were two "Free Games" shortcuts and two "1000 Free Songs" shortcuts. Clearly these were added by some program(s) that I had installed earlier.I right-clicked and deleted the first one only to find that now the second one had no file reference due to my deleting the first. Since both copies are pointing to the same file on the drive, deleting one orphaned its copy and made it impossible to delete it the same way.The result was that I had one shortcut of each that I could not delete off my Start Menu. It would come up with "Cannot find file.." and give you that "Try Again" button. Don't bother, it won't do anything.Perhaps rebooting might have refreshed the Start Menu. I don't know because I did not want to bother since I had apps running and was very busy working with them. After trying a bunch of things, I FOUND A SOLUTION! So I am sharing it here for others who may have the same problem in the future.Go to the orphaned short-cut item in your Start Menu and right-click it. Select "Move to Folder" and then select the Recycle Bin as your folder. It will move the item into the Recycle Bin and off your Start Menu. Then of course you can empty your Recycle Bin as usual.

And all of it has the logo for VLc media player? so basically when i click it it loads on that program but it will not load it as it only does media files. And all the time I have to right click to say open file location then it finally loads the program. So my question is how do I put it all back to normal? Mar 28, 2011I am having issues with searching for program shortcuts in Windows 7. When I type in a shortcut name in the search field on the start menu, nothing appears. Files and Control panel applets do appear though but no program shortcuts located under the C:ProgramdataMicrosoftWindowsStart Menu folder. The OS is Windows 7 Enterprise RTM 64 bit. I have confirmed that the user that is having the issue does have read and execute rights to these shortcuts because they appear in the start menu and in the appropriate folder. This is in a corporate environment so the local hard disk has restricted settings on it via group policy.
They include the following:
- Hide these specified drives in My Computer Restrict C drive Only
- Prevent access to drives from My Computer Restrict C Drive Only.
The tasks I have done.
- Confirmed the index options settings and the start menu is listed.
- Rebuilt the index and the same issue applies

Oct 26, 2011My antivirus software prompted me to do a virus scan and after rebooting, I was no longer able to view any of my program files nor documents. I looked up at some posts and found that I had to one by one uncheck the "hidden" tab on the folders in the system. I was able to retrieve most of the files and programs, but not all of them. I still have a few programs that appear as "empty" on the start menu (i.e. Microsoft Office programs). Any other steps I should take to be able to launch all my programs in the Start Menu?

Jan 2, 2013Like the title says, most of the programs listed in the start menu are gone. They can still be accessed from other places, like the task bar and shortcuts, at least most of them. I would show a picture, but I can't access Paint. The only things that remain are Mahjong, Chess, Solitaire, Purble Place and Magnifier in the main menu and under All Programs: IE, some accessories (not including paint), McAfee, Google Chrome, The startup folder, and WinRAR.

System Check Virus, Loss Of Start Menu Icons?
Mar 26, 2012I bought a new laptop recently, and probably about 4 days later, it got the System Check virus. A friend helped me get rid of the virus(I think), but a lot of my stuff still seems to be hidden. Unhide.exe got back my desktop icons, and some of my Start Menu, but I'm still missing almost all of the right side of said start menu. The Control Panel, Help and Support, Search, etc etc.I have Windows 7.

Having encountered the XP version recently and resolved the issue, I was able to easily remove the virus and associated rootkit. The difference this time was that unhide.exe failed to restore the start>all programs menu shortcuts, although it did manage to restore the folder structure. But the problem I have now is that great number of folders have disappeared! I have already checked if they were hidden or even deleted, but when I manually access those folders from browser address bar it works just fine. (I.E theres no way I can see my "program files x86" in the browser, but yet when I type in C:program files x86 it would take me there just fine").

Dec 7, 2011Amd Phenom II x4 B55 BE, 4gb ram, 2 1tb hdd, 1 250gb external, win7 prof. 64-bit, running kaspersky now. Was using avast prior to problem. Ok to the problem: Unusual or perhaps just new memory usage being high (cpu usage just fine)Direct cause: svchost.exe (system, pid 888) to be exact..Possible Indirect Cause: Virus (most notably the fakeAV trojan)Ok, so i got the fakeAV trojan last night late. I have i believe cleaned it completely, still running a few last scans to check, then rerunning a few in safe mode, but so far everything has come back clean lately. (at least each program once clean, usually multiple).So what this virus does is install a fake av pop up, which of course didn't click and a program called arc.exe (which runs in task manager as microsoft 8 direct blah blah bull) and downloads trojans. So I manually deleted (end process tree, file location, delete, it was in a temp folder) the arc.exe (which was the fake anti-virus pop up blocking me from accessing anything on my computer), but it damaged the registry and I could no longer execute any .exe files, open any programs, or install anything. I did the manual delete etc etc in safe mode with networking.
So out of necessity I restored the computer to a week ago to fix the registry/file access issue to be able to get av software etc etc.(I also deleted all the temp folders, prefetch (it had a lot of download instances of the trojan for the arc.exe file) and a few spot files i knew were bad (i keep close tabs on what I've put on my computer when, and using search modified and looking at date created, deleted a few folders and such that were no good).
Folders Missing From Start Menu?
Jan 4, 2013We have a Windows 2003 Domain and just got some new Windows 7 professional machines.. The problem I am having is that the Accessories, Startup, and maybe other folders are missing from the start menu..
If I login as the Domain admin I get them.. The user is setup as a local machine admin, but they are missing.. We are not blocking anything in Group policy on the domain that I can see.. I have looked numerous times. everyone keeps pointing to the folder being hidden..
This is not the case.. Is there a domain level policy that controls this??

Oct 13, 2012I currently have an issue with my PC where all the text under desktop icons and dialogue boxes is missing, and instead there is a mumbo jumbo of lines and misshapen boxes in control panel, so its impossible for me to try and do anything. I tried doing /sfc scannow in a cmd prompt, but it told me I do not have administrative privileges when I was logged in on my admin account. This happened after I had to boot into safe mode when some windows updates were installed previously. After they were removed, the BSOD remained, but I managed to log on by using 'Boot using last known good configuration'. I have also tried using a system restore point to before the updates were installed but to no avail. Start up repair also drew a blank and I can't think of anything else to do.

(They still work but are gray). I have a feeling it could be a corrupted user profile, but I'm not sure. As per its standard operations it made my computer seem like it was having a bunch of issues, hid all the files on my hard drive, removed my background, etc. I followed a removal guide I found here on bleeping computer and it did rid of me of that annoying malware. A lingering problem I am still experiencing is that all my start menu items are missing. For example there is a folder for Microsoft office, but when you open it it shows as empty, but if I open a Microsoft office file like say a word file the program opens as normal. I have run the unhide.exe file a couple of times, and shutdown my firewall and maleware protection, but to no avail the start menu items still seem to remain hidden.
