Removable Storage Devices (Flash Drives, External HDD) Do Not Work With My Windows 7?
Mar 24, 2011
All of my Removable Storage Devices (Flash drives, External HDD) do not work with my Windows 7. When I connect them, I hear the beeps but the device sometimes show up, sometimes not and sometimes they appear after a long interval. On accessing them, Windows tell me that I need to format the drive. Well, I can't do that. It's happening with all of my removable devices, not just one. They work fine with my laptop which is Windows 7 too,

I tried to install window 7 to new Extreme SSD couple times but I always got the same message:Windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer. This error can be caused by unplugging a removable storage device such as an external USB drive while the device is in use, or by faulty hardware such as a hard drive or CD-ROM drive that is failing. Make sure any removable storage is properly connected and restart your computer. If you continue to receive this error message, contact the hardware manufacture.Status: 0xc00000e9..Info: An unexpected I/O error has occurred.

I've run into a problem on my system involving my SSD, OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS, causing my system to pause/lock-up. Upon contacting my manufacturer (Origin) about the problem, they told me that it was my SSD firmware most likely. After researching I confirmed this myself. Boatloads of people have had this same issue with the older firmware, which I have.Updating should solve all my issues. But PROBLEM : My secondary hard drive does not have a compatible partition style for installing Windows (it has a different style because it's a very large HDD) and I can't get remote assistance on the issue due to my ethernet port being broken. I can't send in my system either because I'm currently living as an expat in China and sending things like this back and forth across the border is nearly impossible and not affordable. There are no Origin shops here in China and even if there were I wouldn't exactly trust it. The only place you can send a computer in is Origin HQ in Miami Florida, which I can't do.
I have these other storage devices. It's all I've got now :
> 16GB Kingston SD card (SD4/16GB)
> 4GB Flash Drive
Can I install windows to one of the spare drives?

Is there anything I can do?I will have everything about my computer repaired after 6 months, when I return to the states. But 6 months without a computer is not something I can have happening. My system is no longer bootable in normal mode, so I'm using Safe Mode just to write this. For clarification, I need THIS firmware update installed to my active system drive. Not sure if it matters, but it's a good habit to post specs :[code]

This is what My Computer looks like:OS C: is the primary internal HD.Local Disk L: is my 320GB external HDD.DVD RW D: is my one and only CD/DVD drive.E:, F:, G: and H: drives are non existent as physical drives installed on the computer, but they appear as options within the menu. How do I get rid of these if they don't even exist?

I want to deny all access to removable storage for standard users at our office on one computer. I've been able to deny that access in the user configuration branch of GPedit. However; it restricts all users, even admin, when I enable that setting. how to I get it to differentiate between users? Of course I want admin to have access and standard users not to have access.

I just upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 Home Premium x32. When I tried to set up Backup and Restore, I got the message "System image cannot be saved on this location." More Info gave me "Scheduled backup of system image is not allowed on removable devices." This seems to be a very strange message since external drives appear to be the most popular backup devices. Backup and Restore setup lists both the C: and the FToshiba external) drives but if I try to create a System Image, it does not list the Toshiba as one of the choices.
I have a Toshiba 500GB usb drive that I was working fine with Vista and Macrium Reflect. I now want to switch to MS Backup and Restore.

I have recently been bereft of the ability to write to standard CD/DVD drive or BluRay drive with any type of blank disc. I always use windows drag-and-drop. All automatic updates are installed.Every system tool test or troubleshooter says that the two devices are working properly. They can play pre-recorded material but I simply cannot get them to recognise blank media.

I no longer show any storage media (flash, portableHD) in my computer when i plug them in. The sound chimes when they connect, they show in the device manager with an exclamation point, but i cannot access anything. Initially my flash drives would attempt to install drivers but fail, now nothing even pops up in the task bar to show it is connected.
Anything that it not storage related (mouse, keyboard, printer, phone charger) all work fine, they chime and pop up in the taskbar when they are plugged in like normal.
What i have tried with no success: Boot into safemode and uninstall everything under USB Controller.... in the device manager including hidden, use different usb ports, refresh, update drivers, nothing works.

I have an eSATA drive that has stopped functioning properly. I was trying unsuccessfully to install some completely unrelated software when I noticed that my eSATA drive was presenting differently. Under My Computer it now said that the drive was empty and there were four drives that appeared that said "Removable Disk (G)", "Removable Disk (H)", "Removable Disk (I)", and "Removable Disk (J)". When I select my eSATA drive, it says 'folder empty'. When I select one of the removable disk drives it says "Please insert a disk into removable disk (?). Whenever I reboot the computer with the eSATA drive disconnected, all five disk drives go away. I don't remember changing any settings or anything like that. One thing is odd that in device manager, the eSATA drive comes up as a SCSI drive. The device manager shows it as "WDC WD10EADS-65M2B1 SCSI Disk Device", but it is actually a "WDC WD500F032".

I recently started seeing a problem on one of my laptops where all USB storage devices would mount but when I try to access them through explorer I get a warning saying the location is not accessible and access is denied. The system can see the usb device, derive the name and file system type of the volume be it a pendrive or a kindle but I cannot access the files. All of these devices work without issue on my other Windows 7 laptop.I get this regardless of being logged in with a user has administrative permissions or standard user permissions. The laptop is a DELL Latitude XT2 running Windows 7 Ultimate fully patched.

I've got three different (but identical, to look at them) MicroSDHC thumb drives. When I tried them in my new Win 7 PC, it assigned a different drive letter and description to each, under Devices with Removable Storage. Even though "Hide empty drives in the computer folder" is checked in my Folder Options, it's not working -- they're still listed under Computer, grayed out. Worse, when I fire up Windows Explorer, it occasionally (but not consistently) gives me a series of errors about the drives not being available -- and this continues to happen even after I uninstall them in Device Manager.

Sometimes it is working or else it is still fail to read.I don't know what is the problem but I get this Inaccessible Function error. And when I checked at Disk Management, the file format of the USB flash drive shown as RAW.I have Ubuntu on my PC (dual boot). And it is just working. Therefore for some reason, my Windows 7 is stupid enough to detect my USB file system.

Here's what you need to do for both 32 bit and 64 bit Windows 7 systems:
- Download the 'Windows Mobile Device Center' ( current version is 6.1 ) which you can download it from url...this works for both Vista and Windows 7. I've tried it on both.
- Install the downloaded software but it may not look like it worked on Windows 7 PCs. Vista automatically configures the settings on the bluetooth devices but for those who have Windows 7, here are the things you should do:
- Go to 'Device Manager' from 'Control Panel' -Or- just right-click on Computer Icon and choose 'Properties' and then click on 'Device Manager'.
- You'll see an 'Unknown Device' named 'Bluetooth Peripheral Device'
- Right-Click it and click on "Update Driver Software" -Or- anyway you find it easy to bring up the Update driver window.
- Click "Browse My Computer for Driver Software" button.
- Click "Let Me Pick from a List of Device Drivers on my computer".
- Select 'Bluetooth Radio' from the list if it asked you to select and then in the next window, it will show a list of drivers with Company Names in one list and Drivers in another. In the Company List choose 'Microsoft Corporation', not only Microsoft.
- From the drivers list there may be one or more drivers with the name "Windows Mobile-Based Device Support" with different driver versions. Select one or the latest.
- Ignore any warnings and keep pressing next and then Finish at last. If all goes well, the last screen will show the message that device driver is successfully installed.
Now, after manually updating the driver for your bluetooth device, in 'Device Manager' when you click on 'Bluetooth Radios', it should display one more item which will say 'Windows Mobile-based device support'.There are few more things that you want to pay attention to. If you have already added the device in your 'bluetooth device list' that didn't work, then remove the device and add it again. After you add it, you might need to restart the computer if it gave you a connection problem error message. Every PCs that had Windows 7 and Vista worked after installing this software and I hope it will work for you too.

I have an external drive that does backups of files for me on a weekly basis through windows, needless to say the backup was getting bigger so I decided to go for a better data storage solution and formatted the external into NTFS. While doing this I also decided to format a USB key into NTFS.THE external drive format took hours, four or so hooked up via firewire. I blamed the issue on the drive and ignored it for the next couple of weeks. The backups didn't work properly they stopped halfway according to Windows even if I let them run 12+ HOURS. Before I formatted it took only 2-3 hours for the backup. I blamed the entire issue on the drive, maybe time to replace it, but I didn't have time to mess with it cause it was simply annoying me.Didn't use the key until tonight. Remember it is formatted as NTFS also. I started to copy a movie file to it, 700mb, it stopped at nearly 89% with 5 seconds left and did not move one bit. I hit cancel and it stayed on the cancel screen for 10 minutes with no resolve. At this point I tried to open a firefox window and it was not responding.......so what did I do I pulled the key and just like that Firefox window popped up and all was well. At that point it hit me, but the external storage solutions are NTFS, could it be my Mobo? Surely not!, Oh Microsoft you make me sad again....Just like with Vista. I reformatted the USB key back to FAT32, transferred a larger 1.4gig file in about 2-3 minutes and had no hangup issues. I can't blame the issue on the mobo especially since it relates to both USB 2.0 connection and the FireWire has the same issue. I guess windows 7 64bit doesn't like external NTFS connections. My windows appears up to date!
