Hard Drive Showing In Removable Devices
Sep 16, 2009I would like to NOT have my two SATA hard drives and my DVD/CD player not showing as removable hardware in the list on my task bar. Any ideas anybody?

Mar 19, 2012I have unfortunately contracted a virus on my removable hard drive. It is an autorun.inf virus which creates shortcuts of all my folders on my drive and makes all the actual folders hidden. I believe it is refereed to as the recycler virus. I have not plugged the drive into my Windows 7 OS, and don't plan on doing so. I have Ubuntu installed however and plan to use that to format my drive as from what I've read autorun.inf viruses dont affect linux. Is this true? If I plug my hard drive into the Ubuntu OS will everything my fine?
Extra Removable Devices?

This is what My Computer looks like:OS C: is the primary internal HD.Local Disk L: is my 320GB external HDD.DVD RW D: is my one and only CD/DVD drive.E:, F:, G: and H: drives are non existent as physical drives installed on the computer, but they appear as options within the menu. How do I get rid of these if they don't even exist?

Dec 12, 2012I just upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 Home Premium x32. When I tried to set up Backup and Restore, I got the message "System image cannot be saved on this location." More Info gave me "Scheduled backup of system image is not allowed on removable devices." This seems to be a very strange message since external drives appear to be the most popular backup devices. Backup and Restore setup lists both the C: and the FToshiba external) drives but if I try to create a System Image, it does not list the Toshiba as one of the choices.
I have a Toshiba 500GB usb drive that I was working fine with Vista and Macrium Reflect. I now want to switch to MS Backup and Restore.

When I connect them, I hear the beeps but the device sometimes show up, sometimes not and sometimes they appear after a long interval. Oct 4, 2011If I update the BIOS on my Intel motherboard to any one of the three most recent BIOS's, my add-in Intel network card (located in one of the pci slots) shows up as a removable device in the taskbar (Much like a USB device; for example a passport removable hard drive or flash drive). However, the motherboard's network controller does not exhibit this behavior.
Intel support is telling me that it can vary as to how the devices are detected by Windows and that this is normal. I have never ever seen a pci slot card being detected as a removable device in the 20 years that I have been using Windows, so I was wondering if what they are telling me is a valid statement? It seems kind of scary that this is happening.

2nd Hard Drive Not Showing Up?

My primary hard drive is a 3.5 sata 500gb and im trying to add a 3.5 IDE 200gb hard drive. I've looked in computer management and everything but the hdd is not showing anywhere.

Jul 9, 2009I have two SATA harddrives 0 and 1. I had Vista on firsst partition on 1 dual booting with XP on 0. When I came to load W7 it did not see drive 1 so I ended up booting it on a partition on drive 0. It is still a dual boot installation.
The problem is that W7 still does not see drive 1 (visible in XP and previously Vista)
It is not visible in computer management or elsewhere. The drive has 3 primary partitions none of which are logical.

Aug 3, 2011I just got a new Packard bell go external hard drive which I used for a couple of days with no problem. btw it has never fell or had any physical damage. I plugged it one day into the PC and it couldn 't be detected in my computer. it shows up in devices and printers and also in disk management. I read on some forums to try and initialize it but it gives me an error saying cyclic redundancy check. I 've tried everything but still not working. this is a new hard drive which has never fell and no physical damage. and please don' t tell me to return it cos it was bought in another country. the only option right now is to fix it?

External Hard Drive Not Showing Up?
Jan 12, 2010So I recently purchased and installed a new hard drive in my PS3. To do that I had to reformat my Western Digital 250 GB hard drive to FAT32 format. Ok, so that's all well and good but I then decided to take my PS3, 60 GB HD (the brand escapes me, but it's a big manufacturer of hard drives) and put it in an external hard drive enclosure. I figured that it's a perfectly good hard drive so there was no sense wasting it. Anyway, as technologically impaired as I might sound after this (which I'm really not) I feel compelled to divulge that I actually did not know that two external hard drives shouldn't be too close to each other. As soon as I put one on top of the other, the 60 GB hard drive beeped and a message popped up saying it needed reformatting. So after reformatting everything a second time, I plugged in the hard drives and the 60 GB one showed up but my 250 GB one did not.
It's showing up everywhere else (disk management, device manager) but not in My Computer. So I have no access to it at all. Also, I did not need to reformat the 250 GB HD since my computer gave me no message indicating that I should. I'd rather only use reformatting as an absolute last resort since it takes HOURS but if it's necessary that I'll have to break down. Throw other options at me first though

I took the hard drive out, connected it to my Network computer, all looks well, I heard it spinning (Good sign?) and then I booted the computer, it didn't actually load windows 7, it spent like a good 10-15mins saying "Loading windows 7" so I turned it off, moved the SATA cable to a different slot, it booted.. then when trying to detect the drive, it doesn't exist. I will need to format it, as it does have windows 7 on that drive aswell.

Apr 6, 2012I purchased an Inspiron 15R today and wanted to do a clean install of Windows 7 right out of the box. I'm using a Windows 7 disk from another machine.I formatted the drive and all of it's partitions (recovery etc.) and installed the OS. After booting though I get sent to an error screen that tells me Windows had an error starting up and that I should choose a way to startup with the usual safe mode etc. No matter what I choose it sends me to this screen. So I booted from the disk again to attempt to format and reinstall, but now I have no disk drives to install to.
I have run a diagnostics check and nothing seems to be wrong, the HDD is still being recognized in the BIOS. What can I do to get my HDD back and showing up in the install destination options?

I have tried to update/re-install the drivers without any luck. I have also tried system recovery and still no sound. The latest software that I have installed is Adobe Production premium 5.5 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

No Devices Showing In Safely Remove Hardware
Nov 3, 2010Just got windows 7 32-bit. I'm stuck on is that no devices are being shown in the Safely Remove Hardware Dialogue box. I know I have a device in..it's my MP3 player which I have just copied songs over too and I can play them. There is no icon in the systems tray either. I then looked around the web and found a page showing how to create a shortcut on the desktop to activate the dialogue box.

Aug 15, 2011I have a Del 1600N Multi function printer that has been in use (successfully) for about two years on my home network. The printer has a built in NIC and is connected via a dedicated 10BaseT line to my network. This printer was working just FINE until I decided to use it as a fax. Some how during that process I must have cleared the network configuration and it stopped being visible on my network. After some investigation into this I was able to get it back on the network my manually assigning it an IP address. Using the supplied installation DVD, I was able to install the printer onto my two desktop computers (running XP Pro 32 bit) and it works just as well as before.
The problem occurs with my wife's Dell laptop. Before the great "fax fiasco" (as I like to call my stupid attempt to use this printer as a fax machine), the laptop was able to find and print to this printer with very little problems. Now, not so much! When I went to re-install this printer the first time I made sure that the Dell Printer software was uninstalled (via Control Panel--Uninstall Programs). The first attempt seemed to be going fine. The software detected the printer on the network and it looked like a successful install. However, the test page did not print out! I checked in the "Printer Properties" to make sure that the printer was on line and sure enough, it was.
But there was a troubleshooting alert that told me the document didn't print. After several hours of messing with it, I decided to uninstall and try again. The second time went much like the first. Then I reasoned that the drivers may be the problem. So I looked on Dell's web site and found the Windows 7 drivers for this printer. I uninstalled the old drivers, downloaded the new ones and then installed. As before it found the printer. But during the install it flashed a message saying that it could not find a file (which was weird).
When I hit "continue" it proceeds and looks like it finishes. The network printer monitoring icon appears in the system tray and I can see the 'scanner" portion of this Multifunction Printer. But still, it won't print to it. And in addition, the printer now refuses to show up in the "Printer and Devices Window"! What am I doing wrong? I've heard that Windows 7 has problems with old printers. But this printer was working perfectly before this! What steps do I need to do to totally remove the old printer drivers and start from scratch? Is there a way to get this printer to be able to work with my wife's Dell Laptop?
