Reformatting Hard Drive And RAID Configuration?

Jan 15, 2013

I am about to reformat my hard drive, long story as to why, but I am starting from scratch. I know how to install windows, drivers etc. But one thing I am not sure about is configuring the RAID, as I wasn't the one who did it when we installed everything. I am asunming that when I reformat the RAID will need to be reconfigured? I have RAID 5 with three hard drives, each 500 GB. I have a program called Intel Rapid Storage Technology that "manages" the hard drives, but if I am correct I have to set up RAID before installing windows. How to configure the RAID the same way I currently have it? This is a homebuilt comp, i7 930 2.8 ghz, 6 GB RAM, Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, Gigabyte motherboard...

Reformatting Hard Drive On Windows 7?

Jun 15, 2012

So my PC was recently infected with viruses, and I was able to get rid of them with Malware bytes and Microsoft Security Essentials.I;m not sure if I completely got rid of the viruses so I want to just completely wipe my hard drive and get rid of it all. When I go to reformat my Hard Disk, Windows says I cannot because it's in use.I google'd around and some guides are saying that I'd be able to reformat and boot up through the Win. 7 installation disk; the problem is that I don't have a Win 7. installation disk.

Reformatting Hard Drive With Cds And The Product Key

Dec 19, 2009

I'm going to be reformatting my hard drive. However this time around I realized I might have a problem.

I originally purchased my pc with windows vista, but then when windows 7 came out I purchased it and immediately installed it on my computer. Bottom line, the factory image of my drive contains windows vista and my current operating system is windows 7.

So, If i go ahead and reformat my hard drive my system will revert back to windows vista (right?). I still have the windows 7 installation cds and the product key. So, can I just reformat and then just simply reinstall windows 7 with the cds and the product key? Or is it more complicated than that?

Hard Drive Configuration On Windows 7?

Jun 18, 2011

When installing Windows 7 about a year ago, I plumped for partitioning off my hard drive to keep Windows XP and installing Windows 7 on separate partition.Recently I added an SSD and have installed Windows 7 on that and now I want to remove the XP partition, reallocate the available space to my Sata Windows 7 install to begin the (long) process of making the SSD the primary and only OS on the machine.I've copy boot.mgr and the boot folder to my SataWin7 drive and then restarted the computer with the DVD in, selecting repair so I can run command prompt.Running Diskpart, I deleted the XP partition but for some reason I'm getting an error when I try and make my sata Windows 7 partition the active partition. I've subsequently rebooted and repaired the machine to restore the Win XP partition so I can carry on booting the machine (hence I'm typing now), but can anyone throw light on to what the problem is here?

Can't Regain Raid 1 Configuration On HDD 2 & Hdd 3 After HDD 1 Replace

Jun 27, 2012

I was forced to replace my OS HDD after a failure. My original configuration was my OS on HDD #1 and then two 1TB HDD set up in raid 1 configuration. I purchased a Crucial 256gb M4 drive for my OS with the hopes of continuing to use my HDD #2 and HDD #3 as one drive in raid 1 for my data files. Upon reinstall Windows 7 booted right up but no longer were my two drives recognized as one drive. I went into the bios and changed my setting from ACHI to Raid and set the M4 as the first boot device. Upon restart no boot device was located and windows failed to start. I was able to <control-i> into my raid settings and the two 1TB are set up as raid 1 and the M4 is set as non raid drive. why I am not able to regain my original settings?

System Drive Do Not Appear When Reformatting Os

Nov 30, 2012

When I reboot the laptop to install Windows XP, it goes well. But when it comes to the page where you can Select, Delete or Create a partition, the laptop's system drive is not showing. The page only shows the USB drive as my drive C, because it is my priority right? So now, I cannot reformat the laptop because the system drive of the laptop is not showing. What and where is the problem? Is it the bootable USB? or there is another way to make a downgrade? or the problem is my system drive?

Reformatting Windows 7 System To XP / "No Drive Found"

May 17, 2010

I had an old thread on Windows 7 running really unreliable on my system, and after speaking with a Sony support person today, I've found out that Sony does not support Windows 7 on my system. It's a bummer but, at any rate, I'm trying to put Windows XP back on the system.I've downloaded the Windows XP Professional with SP3 from MSDN student website.I have the ISO burned to a disc, and I boot the computer from CD drive. After the initial setup, it ask to start windows and press enter.I do so, and I says to select the drive I wish to reformat. There are four slots, all of which say "No drive found" Whenever you press ANY button, I get a BSOD.Any reason as to why it doesn't recognize any drives, or why I can't get any further into the process without it crashing?

Master Folder For Multiple Hard Drives Without Raid Setup

Jul 18, 2012

I am in the process of putting (5) 3TB HDD's into my computer (Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit) to rip my Blu-ray collection to for playback in my home theater room via a Popcorn Hour player. Each drive is independent and I will be systematically filling one drive before going onto the next. The problem is that the Popcorn Hour players communicate with the PC by specifying one folder via SMB that contains all of my media. Since I am doing independent drives, there will be one master folder on each drive containing all of the media for that said drive. Meaning, in terms of the Popcorn Hour/SMB setup, there are five folders I need it to *see* and catalog.

Upgrading Hard Drive On A Solid State/Hard Drive System?

Oct 25, 2011

So, I have a i7 2600K system with a solid state disk as the boot drive, and an older (c2008) Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB drive as the data drive for programs (that I deem as not worthy of the quick load times). The hard drive has given me some errors over time, and I bought a hard disk to replace it (a Hitachi 1TB). The issue I'm having is that the fact that Windows 7 puts a small (100MB) partition on the F3, and for some reason, even though I'm running Acronis 2012, it doesn't seem to be able to clone the F3 over to the Hitachi. I've also tried Drive XML, and for my 2 hour wait, I only managed to acquire a boot error. Thankfully, I've not done anything rash to destroy the data on the F3, but given the fact that I've seen corrupted files in Steam from that drive, I'm not will to trust it long term with my data. I really need to get the data onto that Hitachi, though... Anyone have any advice for upgrading the HDD in a SSD/HDD system? I don't really feel like it should be so hard, especially if I've bought Acronis True Image, but maybe they haven't designed their product to handle this scenario quite yet?

RAID 1 On Windows C Drive

Oct 27, 2012

I am doing a quick windows build here on a couple of computers and want to RAID 1 the windows C drive. The motherboard i got for them does not support RAID (I kinda figured it would). So now i was thinking of just doing a software RAID in windows. I got the C drive to mirror each other in disk management but the issue seems to be booting. When the computer starts it asks which hard drive i want to boot from and when i simulate hard drive failure the boot manager doesn't come up at all and i am stuck with the no boot device error. My guessing is that there is something on the 100MB system partition that isn't copying over.

Backup RAID / Recover To New Drive

Jan 5, 2013

until recently I had an XP PC with a single main OS IDE HD. To backup I performed monthly an Acronis clone to an identical 2nd IDE HD that I bought for this purpose. Easy.
Now I have a Windows 7 PC with two identical SSD's in RAID0 as main OS drive and a 2nd internal HD. I would like to perform a backup of this system so that I can later restore it to any HD configuration I choose (for example a single SSD, or a single HD, etc). Is this possible or the restore will need to be done to the same original configuration (two SSD's in RAID0+2nd int HD)? What would be the simplest software that will accomplish this?

Re-install Of Windows 7 With RAID 0 Drive

Nov 20, 2010

My PC is currently using a single RAID 0 drive that contains my Windows install and all my data in a single partition C: (I'm well backed up so happy with the risk of RAID0)

The RAID0 drive is setup by my motherboard controller so Windows just sees the one drive.

I am thinking of adding an separate drive for windows, hopefully an SSD. I would like to do a fresh install of Windows 7 on the new disk then rename the old RAID0 drive to something different such as D: . Then reorganise it into just a data disk.

My question is.. will the new Windows 7 installation just see the old RAID0 disk as another disk? I know this would work witha normal disk, but does RAID0 transfer over to a new installation ok?

Possible To Move XP Backup To RAID 0 Drive

May 29, 2012

Just wondering what or if I could move an xp backup onto a raid 0 drive. I did setup the drives in raid in the bios, and they show as raid. I booted into my marcium backup and ran my xp backup onto the drive, that showed in marcium as a raid 0 drive. When I booted, which went fine, into xp it shows in disk management as raid 0. But the problem is, it shows two drives, together and the 2nd drive as being un partitioned. Therefore I'm only running on one drive. Is this fixable, or do I need a clean install?

Drive Crashed In RAID Config

Jun 17, 2012

I have an HTPC that I've had for about 4 years now. Today when I booted it up it went into an infinite loop with the 'Startup Repair Utility" where it would just sit there claiming to be repairing the drive but never actually completing or providing a notification of the issues (typical Microsoft troubleshooting). Anyway, I finally was able to get into the advanced settings of the utility and get to a command prompt and see what was going on.

1)The previous RAID 1 configuration was setup as the main C: drive with the OS and also where I had all our music stored. But now during the boot sequence the bios startup it flashes in red complaining about the RAID array having degraded and when I finally got into a command prompt it was no longer mapped to C:, the two drives in the array were mapping independently as drive E: and F: respectively (the DVD-ROM is the D: drive).

2)My first concern was to get my music off it so I plugged in an external USB drive and went into command prompt and tried to xcopy from E:, it started to copy then failed catastrophically with a weird error so that would appear to be the bad drive. I then tried the same thing on drive F: (the mirror) and its cranking along nicely copying all my music over. My fingers are crossed but I suspect I'll be OK, its unlikely to get two drive failures in the same array at the exact same time

Once I get my data off the good drive how should I proceed? I assume I need to get a new duplicate drive installed and then can I not rebuild the RAID array from the good drive? I've never done this before, the machine came built for me so I'm not familiar how it is setup. What I do know is that it has a 'RAID utility' you can jump into at boot up by hitting F10.
