Partition D Files Not Visible / No Access
Feb 13, 2012
I had Windows 7 Ultimate x64 installed.I caught a virus, could not get rid of it, kept getting forcefully logged off, and couldn't manage anything from safe mode, or do a sys. restore either.Quickly got irritated, and formatted C: drive and reinstalled. After installation I navigated to the D: partition, however, the explorer simply says that this folder is empty. under properties, the D: drive is still 37GB full and 231 GB empty, I do not have any other partitions.

I've got a laptop with a Windows partition and an Ubuntu partition. I'm pretty sure I just botched an Ubuntu upgrade. What I'd like to do is get my documents off of the Ubuntu partition. Is there a way to access that partition from windows (i.e. the window's partition)?

I'm trying to get access to my word documents and files from my Vista partition without the "Read-Only". Do I have to log-on to Vista and change the settings from that OS? What settings do I need to change, it is confusing because I right-clicked the Vista Partition and enabled sharing but that did not work

I recently got a new iMac so am trying to copy/move some files around. However ANY file i copy onto the hard disk (which is in NTFS format) are not visible in Win7. The folder into which i copied into is visible but shows size as 0 bytes, whereas there is around 1.7TB of data in that folder. ALl older folders which were created/modified in Win7 earlier are visible. If i attach the disk to the Mac, the the files are there.. Am using Paragon NTFS if that matters...

I have a couple of desktops and laptops connected on a wired network. I have no problems accessing and copying files. This isn't about access denied or other machines not being visible. My issue is that one of my laptops can be accessed and I can move through all shared folders but sometimes when I try to copy a file from this machine the copy dialog opens but no data is being copied. The transfer rate stays at 0kb/s. Rebooting this machine helps partially, but file transfers will start at well below 1Mb/s and very slowly rise some during the copy. I don't have this issue with any other machine. In fact, I have never seen an issue like this. Most people have problems with read/write permissions, again, that's not my problem. Data just won't move when copying sometimes. All machines are running Windows 7 ultimate and avast 5. The laptop with this issue is a Toshiba e205, core i5, 4gigs ram, atheros ar8152 ethernet. Should also mention that I don't have a problem with other traffic on this connection such as internet or like I said accessing shared files in explorer. They just won't copy.

I have 25 files and folders on my desktop but only 15 are visible when viewing the desktop directly. All of them are visible when viewing the desktop in Windows Explorer. I have two monitors configured as one and keep all desktop items on one of them. I've tried selecting everything with CTL-A while on the desktop and moving them around as a group, to see if the missing ones might have somehow scrolled off the screen, but that doesn't reveal them.

I have 5 Windows 7 computers connected to the same homegroup/workgroup via a Cisco Linksys E1200. All four computers are HPs of various makes, 3 laptops (one of them is a $600 brick) and 2 desktops. Any computer that is awake and online, shows up (with its name) in Network on the other machinesHowever, double-clicking to view files on these computers returns the following message:Code: Windows cannot access \COMPNAMECheck the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. Totry to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose.Details: Error code: 0x80070035 - The network path was not found.Diagnose, as expected, did nothing. However, here's the fun bit - when I try to access files on other computers by browsing their IP address, everything works perfectlyFor now, anyway. I'm expecting a sudden degradation any day now.

I'm a long-time reader but new poster. I am currently running Windows 7. I want to install Windows XP onto another disc and have a dual-boot setup. I keep Windows 7 up to date and secure, but for the XP partition, I would rather not have antivirus running or even installed, in order to limit background processes. I will not be logging into any place or making any credit card purchases when booted into Windows XP. It will just be used for surfing, games, etc. Further, if and when XP becomes compromised or buggy, I will simply overwrite the partition with a backup image.
If I use Bitlocker to lock down the Windows 7 partition (with the encryption key on a thumb drive) and boot into Windows XP, am I correct in thinking the XP installation see or can't access the Windows 7 partition? If XP gets compromised, can a virus access or write to the Windows 7 partition?
Is there any other reason why this would not be secure? Can a virus write to the BIOS?

I'm preparing a fresh install of Win 7 Pro on a 2 disk system (90GB SSD and 1TB HDD). I'll be placing the OS/Apps on the SSD and Data and image restore files on HDD.Qs:1. If I allocate ~60GB for the OS/Apps partition, and actual storage of the OS/Apps is 35GB...what size partition do I need on the HDD to save this image file? I assume the compressed file will be 45-50% of original. Will I want to store multiple image files created over the course of time as apps are added and system is further optimized, and hence need a partition that is a multiple of the OS/App partition size? What do you do?2. Also, an 8GB RamDisk will serve as scratch disk space for some apps (RamDisk +) which can save an image of the session's writes upon shutdown. I plan to save this image to the 2nd HDD. Is it recommended that I save this to same partition that stores the OS/App image in Q #1 above,

I lost the ability to see those files from my SONY Bravia. I can still access my PC as a server and can view other video files, but the "Recorded TV" folder shows as empty, I switched back to my original partition and still no luck.HP Pavilion running Windows 7 premium 64

I have upgraded from Vista to 7. While I was using Vista I had a seperate partition that had all the software that originally came with my laptop.
Now I have installed Windows 7 I need to have access to these files so I can get the extra bits on my laptop to work. My problem is that I can't see the partition in Explorer anymore. I know it is still there because I can see it in Disk Management.
I have attached a screen shot of the disk management if that helps. (Its the partition that is 9.28gb)

I had a go at installing Windows 7 yesterday and have run into a small hiccup. On my XP installation, my HD was partitioned into 2 drives, C: and D: (both the C and D drives are NTFS formatted).C: was used for windows and program files.D: was used for my documents eg. videos, photos etc.I installed Windows 7 as a fresh install to the C: partition and the installation went smoothly. However, My Computer, I can see the D: drive listed, but every time I click on the icon it says "Access Denied - Drive Not Accessible"All my stuff is backed up on an external drive so I'm not too worried about re-formatting HD etc, but wondered why it is doing it and if anyone knew a way to get my D: drive back without formatting?

Got an HP Mini 110 netbook. A person who gave it to me destroyed all the OS system, plus the RAM's were broken. So I replaced them and installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 Starter 32bit. Everything works fine, but as most new laptops this one has a hidden recovery partition. The problem is I want to restore this machine to factory condition, but I cant access it due to the fact that I dont have HP Recovery Manager or something like that. The recovery partition itself is okay as I saw in Admin Tools. When going to System Recovery Options / System Image Recovery, the process cant detect any image - "Windows cant find a system image on this computer".
what could I use to restore it to factory condition? Maybe there is a software that I can install and use in the same way as HP Recovery Manager? Or maybe I can get HP Recovery Manager somewhere. so that you know, I also tried the F6 and itc methods, no luck.

I installed windows 7, on the first boot I could access my D drive which is the drive that contains all media, files, resumes, etc etc etc. Windows 7 itself is on the C drive. I rebooted, and I open up 'computer' and now the D drive just says 'D: (Spare) NTFS' if I try to open or browse it says 'Access Denied' in a pop up window.
If I try to change the drive letter in disc management; 'Virtual Disk Manager: The parameter is incorrect'.
If I right click the drive and access security it says I don't have permission to view security and that I should try to take ownership. If I try to take ownership; 'access denied' Windows 7 literally stole all of my stuff. I suspect it's still in there but I cannot access it. The windows vista I installed on that drive as a work around incase I needed to grab drives and 7 couldn't get online, loads from that inaccessible drive, but cannot browse it. So i know it's intact and has the files on it.
Is there a way to brute force my way into it. it's my stuff and I want it.
I've been looking for how to fix this for around 16 hours now and have only found half tutorials and convoluted nonsense. how do i get access to my drive without formatting? I'm on the verge of turning into one of those people who just goes around spamming fbombs everywhere. I'm at my limit of sanity and patience with this. there was no reason for windows to lock it away from me in the first place.

I've got a new PC running Windows 7 Home 64-bit. It works well and I'm very pleased.I've just tried importing my Outlook.pst file from my old computer (ran Win XP Pro) which died (partition got partially deleted). I've managed to access it using "Find and Mount" which will display the partition as a drive in My Computer and I can access all files bar those in "Documents & Settings" which it comes up saying I don't have permisson to access.I've tried to take ownership of these files, however I get an error saying "The media is write protected". Is there anything I can do to recover the files?

I had a dualboot of Windows 7 and Windows XP. Later I just only wanted to have Windows 7. So I downloaded Vista Boot Manager and deleted Windows XP on the list, so now its only booting from Windows 7. But all those files of Windows XP are still left on the partition. And I have no access to delete them, not even in a save boot. Unlocker helped me a while, but I'm now stuck with 3 folders which I can't delete. I've got now 50 GB left on my HDD, and the partition of Windows XP was 200 GB, so I think you can realize I want those GB back!

I want to shrink my C partition with Windows 7 installed, but Windows 7 partition manager wont shrink it past 200GB because of unmovable files. I dont know what files those are though.
If I use Partition Wizard to shrink the size to 100GB, is it safe to resize when there are unmovable files? Will this damage my system?
Why can a third party program shrink the partition, but Windows cant?
