I'm trying to get access to my word documents and files from my Vista partition without the "Read-Only". Do I have to log-on to Vista and change the settings from that OS? What settings do I need to change, it is confusing because I right-clicked the Vista Partition and enabled sharing but that did not work
View 1 Replieswe have a computer at school that's being shared by young students, but they get a kick out of deleting files. they have a shared folder on a separate partition for all their activities. it's okay if they can open or even modify each other's files, but we just don't want them deleting anything. is there a user policy/security setting that can make this possible?

I am trying to get several peoples opinion. I believe that a small disk that is bootable similar to a ssd is better that a large one full of data. There is less disk to deframent and it should be faster. The larger data disk will contain most of the files many of which will not be used a large part of the time. One can keep larger files such as pictures or videos in that data disk. I probably prefer a small ssd(less than 100GB) but am not sure that is the best way to go right now. Later on when the price and quality of ssd goes down I could substitute that drive for the small hd partition or drive.

I was wondering can i just drag the folder "Users" to the partition.
So basically I would like to know how i get the "Users" folder over to another partition.
I just spent like 18 hours copying 600K files, 1.33 TB, from a USB 2.0 ext. drive to a 1.36 TB USB 3.0 partition, but at the very end I got a handful of prompts to replace folders that already existed in the newly created folder, asked me to merge the original folder with the one just copied on the destination drive, eventually asking for permission to replace thousands of items and that's what it's doing now. I don't know what's going on. It appears that all files are there in both folders on each drive (with the exception of half a dozen that wouldn't copy due to long filenames).
Nearest I can guess is it is writing DOS names in addition to Windows names so the computer is going to spend more than a dozen more hours doing that. Today when I loaded windows 7 I clicked on my account and after a slight delay a message appeared "preparing your desktop". When it appeared it was a new desktop and a message on the task bar stated "you can not access you files and folders". I have followed a few steps about unlocking locked accounts but my account wasn't locked. A few other things have been happening over the last week so I am worried I might have a virus.

In case it makes any difference, the computer that hard drive originally was in ran Windows XP Pro.I recently got a new computer, with Windows 7 and had the hard drive put into this new computer, along with the hard drive that came in the computer.I can get to the drive itself, but when I try to access folders or files, either access is denied or folders which should contain more folders, are empty. I have tried changing the permission and ownership options on the drive, but no luck.

(it's to fix an issue with the game Dead Space 2) Anyway, I opened My Computer, then C drive, then Users. In here, I right clicked on empty space and opened properties. I checked 'Hidden' and apply. Said it needed administrator rights, I accepted. Then most desktop items disappeared, most files from my documents disappeared and after reboot, The ATI catalyst control centre is popping up an error message saying 'failed to start'.I realised I chose to hide all the files within that folder instead of showing hidden files/folders..I went to folder options and chose Show Hidden file and I can see them again but they have that see through look to them. ATI catalyst still won't start on reboot. I tried system restore to yesterday but still exact same.When I go to User Properties on the C drive again, it shows the files as Read Only and Hidden is unchecked.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMaybe I'm just over thinking here, but say you hide a file, sure you can access it through changing the folder options from show to do not show. So whats the point of hiding stuff unless you're hiding it from someone who is a novice at windows 7. My main goal here, is to have a folder, which is password protected, and have it filled with things that can not be accessed through any means other than entering the correct password and therefore entering the folder. I basically want it to be completely impossible for someone to access the contents of the folder without the password.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI could not find the correct thread to post so please accept my apologies if this is an old resolved bug.This has been winding me for a while now, but today it has totally done my head in.! when I access my music folders from external USB and I click on a folder the grey bar at the top of the folder window takes ages to move across... then I get the red cross in the button. This is a major problem now, the cpu fan goes crazy and well its quite disturbing.To get around this I would access my file from within the music editing software to avoid this problem, but as I'm a Mastering Engineer I need to access the files in their respective folders.
This was never a problem on any other machine I have had before. All drives are fine tested on other machines. They are good. So today I tried it again, same thing. The grey bar at the top went crazy when I tried to access a wav folder to master with 2.5 gigs of data in.The grey bar at the top slowly moves across the top then the red cross thing again in the button, I refresh and the same thing again. Meanwhile the fan goes on and the thing then seems to hang on finding files in folders. So I back out of the folder close it down. Then I went to My computer on the start menu... erm the grey bar again slowly moves to the right, No C drive shows up is empty and the fan kicks in and it sounds like it is going to take off.Then I have to close the machine down as it cannot find anything in thefolders.This is very strange indeed. This only happen when I search for files in folders before hand, normally I can see my drives when I click my computer.I have just rebooted the laptop now and it is good but when I open a folder it goes nuts.
I had Windows 7 Ultimate x64 installed.I caught a virus, could not get rid of it, kept getting forcefully logged off, and couldn't manage anything from safe mode, or do a sys. restore either.Quickly got irritated, and formatted C: drive and reinstalled.After installation I navigated to the D: partition, however, the explorer simply says that this folder is empty. under properties, the D: drive is still 37GB full and 231 GB empty, I do not have any other partitions.

I have a Vista PC that I would like to also access those same folders, but as I understand it, homegroup is exclusive to Windows 7. how to get access to the folders on the windows 7 PC, from my vista PC? If possible I'd like to do it without getting rid of the homegroup... as everything is set up (with the other PC and 360) to work as it is.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been working with I.T. for years, and when I went to a client's last night to share a drive over the network so they can install a program on a secondworkstation and use the database on the original machine. Anyway, sharing this drive shouldn't have taken me more than five minutes. However, I'm encountering problems I've never seen before. The Win7 PC sees the Vista PC on the network, but not any of the shared drives. And when I try to explore the Vista PC from the Win7 PC, I get an errors: ""Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (Vista PC) is not responding."Both PCs are on the same network, obviously, AV software and Windows firewall disabled on both, Homegroup off on Win 7 machine, both machines on same workgroup "WORKGROUP," set with static local IPs/DNS, etc., and both able to access network resources and the internet. One thing I HAVE noticed, however, is that when exploring the network on the Vista PC, I can't see anything (including the Win7 machine,) except the Vista PC itself and the router.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what's wrong? I've tried pretty much everything I can think of. Even the SFC on the Vista PC didn't find any issues. I've checked the services, and all that should be running are set to Auto, and are started and running. I've looked for hours online, trying every possible option I can find, to no avail. I'm completely stumped! Never in my years in IT have I encountered this.
i use BitLord to download random stuff anyways the Downloads Folder Shows up like this : Now when i open Nero up it shows this Weird thing is if i hover over the folder from normal window it says the Downloads folder is only 800mb (as it is only showing me one item) yet from Nero it says the folder is over 9 Gigs. Im set as Owner of the folder and i have all permissions set for me however i am still unable to see these files outside of nero and i don't know why.When i go and try to change the permissions on the folders (the locked ones) windows says the files/folders doesn't exist...
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have one PC running Vista (home basic), one running XP (professional) and one running Windows 7 (home basic). There is a printer connected to the Vista box, which is shared.
On the XP box I can both see and use the printer on the Vista box (i.e. a "net view \vistabox" shows the printer, and under "printers and faxes" I can install and use it).
On the Windows 7 box, however, I can see the Vista box (i.e. a "net view" shows it in the list of available PCs on the network) but a "net view \vistabox" gives me an "access denied" error.
The Windows 7 machine has a password on it, the Vista and XP machines don't. All machines are on the same workgroup name (which is "WORKGROUP"). On the XP box I don't need a password to access the shared printer on the Vista machine; it just works.
Extensive Googling has failed to render enlightenment, nor has browsing this forum. I'm sure it has something to do with security and passwords, somewhere, somehow, but I have no idea in which direction to look for it, let alone fix it. I have also read some things about workgroups and homegroups not being the same in Windows 7, but I'm not sure if this is correct (and if so, relevant).
I'm a long-time reader but new poster. I am currently running Windows 7. I want to install Windows XP onto another disc and have a dual-boot setup. I keep Windows 7 up to date and secure, but for the XP partition, I would rather not have antivirus running or even installed, in order to limit background processes. I will not be logging into any place or making any credit card purchases when booted into Windows XP. It will just be used for surfing, games, etc. Further, if and when XP becomes compromised or buggy, I will simply overwrite the partition with a backup image.
If I use Bitlocker to lock down the Windows 7 partition (with the encryption key on a thumb drive) and boot into Windows XP, am I correct in thinking the XP installation see or can't access the Windows 7 partition? If XP gets compromised, can a virus access or write to the Windows 7 partition?
Is there any other reason why this would not be secure? Can a virus write to the BIOS?
I got a disk drive with 3 partitions...
1 - vista 64 (50GB)
2 - win 7 64 (30GB)
3 - data (80GB)
I want to move win 7 installation to vista partition and extend partition 3 with freed partition 2.
-I though to do this
-Backup win 7 to external drive
-boot from cd installation
-choose to restore win 7 in partition 1
-After it boots correctly, resize partition 3 adding partition 2.
I realized that boot files are in partition 1, when I tried in windows 7 to backup system (partition 2) it want sto backup full partition 1, because it's part of system and partition 1 is considered critical.
Any procedure to accomplish this?
I have my tower pc on constant all day- to record a streaming IP Camera from my work.Initially, I saved these files into my docutments- which they would save as .avi files, and after every several days I would delete them as they would take up ALOT of space on my pc.My pc is 250GB in size, and usually it would be about 80GB full before I had the IP Camera. Just recently, I noticed all of the IP Camera avi files seemed to have disappeared from my documents if I went directly to the folder... I could still see them in documents when I was choosing a location to save the recordings.Upon right-clicking the avi files in the latter, the files would be of no size and wouldn't play.Now my computer is 210GB full in the matter of a week.

I keep getting a message "Your Partition D is Full" and when trying to download my McAfee Antivirus I get a message the destination drive is full and it doesn't installe. The D drive has zero space available. Nothing but systems files are saved on this partition. I tried everything I know, even trying to delete the "program manager" and "windows" folders, but these last actions could not be performed becasue it seems I need permission from TrustedInstaller. I did not go any further because don't want to harm the PC. What can I do to free space on this partition or how can i redirect downloads to go to my "C" partition, which has plenty of space.

When I clicked on every folder to see how much memory they are using I saw that everything on my C drive is using a total of 22GB.My question is where are the other 26 GB.Another very strange thing is that every time I use the internet to surf sites the free space in my C drive slowly become smaller and smaller.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased a laptop from a company that i used to work for which went into administration. I can log on with my details as normal, but I am unable to install software or complete any upgrades as it keeps asking for Administration password. I have tried calling the IT people that took care of the laptops for this but they are not responding back regarding the password. When I use to have upgrades done the IT people would do this remotely. I have contacted Toshiba, who have said I will need to order a recovery disk, but this will wipe out all data. Does someone know of less drastic action?

I know I can drag it down to the bottom. But it won't stay there. I move to another location in Explorer and it insists on expanding that stupid Folders section cutting into the space for the Favorites.
I'm preparing a fresh install of Win 7 Pro on a 2 disk system (90GB SSD and 1TB HDD). I'll be placing the OS/Apps on the SSD and Data and image restore files on HDD.Qs:1. If I allocate ~60GB for the OS/Apps partition, and actual storage of the OS/Apps is 35GB...what size partition do I need on the HDD to save this image file? I assume the compressed file will be 45-50% of original. Will I want to store multiple image files created over the course of time as apps are added and system is further optimized, and hence need a partition that is a multiple of the OS/App partition size? What do you do?2. Also, an 8GB RamDisk will serve as scratch disk space for some apps (RamDisk +) which can save an image of the session's writes upon shutdown. I plan to save this image to the 2nd HDD. Is it recommended that I save this to same partition that stores the OS/App image in Q #1 above,

I used to access shared internet from a router, now the router has no internet we only use it for local home sharing. I added the secondary adapter to connect to the DSL-modem directly.so now when I disable the 1st adapter my internet works fine. when they're both enabled internet doesn't work at full speed or sometimes not at all.
