"Operating System: Unknown" When Trying Startup Repair

Instead of "Operating system: Windows 7" i get "Operating system: Unknown" and when I try to repair startup, it fails

Windows 7 Recovery Disk Shows Operating System: Unknown On (Unknown)?
Oct 18, 2012When I was booting one day last week I got a nasty BSOD when Windows was trying to load. Then on the next reboot Windows 7 said it couldn't load and needed to do the recovery OS option from the Windows 7 repair on the CD. Well, before trying that I did a cold reboot and it got back into the OS fine so I didn't think much of it. Now, I noticed Ghost shows the C: drive status as "Unavailable" and it can't back it up anymore. It does give me an option to restore from one of my old backups. I'm thinking the MBR got hosed up somehow or something like that. But I'm skeptical to run an MBR repair since I have that 100MB partition on my SSD where my OS resides.
Ghost Shot> This was about a week ago my Windows 7 started acting up right before the big patch Tuesday. I've been running it for over a year now and it's been solid. When I first set it up I installed it on my SSD (Intel 510 120GB) drive. One of the qualms I had with the install is Windows created a separate boot sector on the disk drive where it stored my boot files. This is known the the "system reserved" operating system files 100MB partition. Apparently the way to avoid this is to use a third party partition tool before doing the windows install. That way it will keep the Boot sector files on the same partition which is how I would of liked it for doing restores from Ghost 15,etc. Anyway, ghost was backing up my system C: drive before last week. I have yet to even try and use Ghost to see if it would successfully restore my OS but I've been using it to backup my C: drive anyways. Prior to last week it could backup my C: drive fine. I might try a Ghost restore point from a few weeks back before this happened but not sure yet[CODE]

Sep 24, 2012I was playing Syndicate on PC, and then suddenly, the game froze along with the sound. I could not alt tab, or ctl alt del. So I shut down the laptop using the power button. Then onwards, every time I start/restart it beeps numerous times and then the HP logo is seen, then it beeps numerous times again and then asks "Choose operating system". I click windows 7 on that screen and then it starts and works fine. I have started and restarted, and the number of beep codes are numerous and dont have an exact count every time. On one start it might be 11 beeps and on another it might be 8 beeps. I am on HP G70 120, and I am on Windows 7 32 Bit. The only operating system I am using is Windows 7.

Jan 15, 2012I recently downloaded a damaged file, which caused my computer (not this one) to be unable to start up normally. The computer now boots up in Startup repair, which is unable to repair my computer "automatically" and when I then click "View advanced options for system recovery and support" and go to the "System restore" tab and choose a Date and time for the restoration, it tells me that "There is not enough free space to restore the disk". I seem to have no options to try and sort out the missing space on the harddisk, which should be unnecessary because I am pretty sure there is still alot of disk space on the C.

I made a recovery disk and I can get into bios so I tried booting from internal disk and tried startup repair got nothing, tried system restore for every restore point and none will finish. Took each piece of ram out an tried starting it up to see if bad ram was the problem and it starts the same way. I also tried the restore from previous image but I have no image. Feb 18, 2012I have a Dell Inspiron and a while ago I shut down my PC and the next morning I was faced with options to repair my computer. It hung on the screen for ages before it actually came up with startup repair and supposedly fixed the problem. A few days later, everything got very slow and started to freeze a lot and before long, booting the computer got very slow as well as it hung for about ten minutes on a black screen after the 'welcome' screen before finally starting up. I decided to reinstall the operating system (I did NOT reformat the C drive), so I borrowed my Grandma's external hard drive and copied my files. After reinstalling using a Dell Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium Re-Installation DVD, I copied and deleted the files off the external hard drive onto my PC (I didn't know it would create a Windows.old folder) and started installing programs. Then I left it overnight to install quite a big program. This morning, somehow it had turned off. I turned it on and it gave me the safe mode options and a 'start windows normally' option. I chose the latter and after typing my password it hung on the welcome screen again. I left it for ages and it just went back to the user login screen again. I pressed the red button in the corner to shut it down but it just hung once again on an empty screen so I did a hard shutdown (held down the power button). I turned it on again...startup repair. It gave me the option for system restore, which I did (then realising when it finished that I hadn't made a backup). I booted it, and again it wouldn't start properly. At this time, safe mode booted fine. After trying various things (even using a compressed air can to get rid of dust) and a few hard shutdowns, suddenly every option from the advanced boot menu took me to startup repair except 'Repair your Computer' which gave the normal options for repair (although now it only gives me 2, Startup Repair and DataSafe Restore and Emergency Backup. Now when I do startup repair, some times it says it has fixed the problem, and sometimes it says it cannot be fixed automatically and gives me information on the problem (a few things it said were: 'StartupRepairOffline', 'AutoFailover' and 'CorruptRegistry').
I can't reinstall my computer because then I would lose my precious files.
Is there some way I can save my files and reinstall or even just save my files somehow or am I screwed?

Just recently I started getting a strange device connection sound playing at login/startup. Just after the windows start up chime I hear the second device connect sound. I have nothing connected differently than I did a few days ago but all of a sudden this morning I now hear it. No USB HD's or flash drives connected.
I was just wondering if anyone knew of a way to figure out what Windows was connecting at login? Heard Event viewer mentioned somewhere but no idea how to use this or where to look.

Startup Unsuccesful, Startup Repair-no Fix?
Jul 30, 2012the Startup screen. So I went to the Startup repair tool as was recommended, but after few tries nothing has changed. So I tried to recover to previous recovery point, but also nothing. Then I tried booting to Safe mode, and I saw that during the loading process there was no file shown as succesfully loaded. I might also know what could be the cause of this problem, because yesterday when I was shutting Win down, there was a blackout so obviusly some files are corrupted.
