External Hard Drive Not Connected?
May 3, 2011Running Win 7 home, acer 1800.About a week ago I installed a Buffalo 1.5 TB external drive and automatic back up package, it was working very well, however it now shows as " Not Connected".I have replaced the usb lead but no change in status.It is also no showing up with other drives?Any one had this problem and found a fix?I did a search but found nothing quite like this.

Jan 16, 2013I am using an external USB combo drive, now I decided to take out the drives and have them permanently plugged inside my system through sata. None of the hard drives are seen in the bios or windows 7 x64 yet when I plug them into my usb combo external they show straight away. I know it cant be a setting as I already have a couple of sata drives internally that work fine. Why are these two drives that have been sat in a usb external not being seen at all when plugged internally on the motherboard?

Oct 6, 2011I recently purchased an Iomega 1TB external hard drive to back up my files from my Laptop (Toshiba satellite) because it has been constantly showing hard drive failure warnings and messages telling me to back up my files. When I connected the hard drive the first time, it worked fine and I was able to access it, but didn't use it for anything at the time. The next time I used it, however, the usual "New device" sound didn't play and the hard drive didn't show up in the file browser. I then looked up the issue to find that it is a common problem where the device hasn't been assigned a drive letter. I went to the Disk Manager to fix the issue but the device was not in the list of connected devices.The problem seems to be with my computer because it works fine on my brother's computer and has no issues.Additionally, I have been having problems with Windows Update being stuck on "Downloading 0%" and have had to use the system restore several times when getting stuck on an update message on startup. I think that this may be the cause of the problem (and yes, I have turned on the hard drive).

I can see in the device manager that there are (intel) drivers that support USB3.0. The external device (WD mypassport) advertises USB 3.0 support. Is there a way to find out in windows 7 (home premium) if the actual usb connection is really using USB3.0 or if it is falling back into USB2? Is the transmission speed in the USB connection the only hint about what is happening in the USB connection. That is, a higher speed means that USB 3.0 is really being used?

My problem is, I used my external hard drive so I could tape TV shows on my Bell Express Vu receiver. I disconnected the external drive and want to use it on my computer but for some reason, I can't get it to work. It shows up under Devices and it's called "Desktop". Can't see what's on it or even open it. Normally they will show up under the same area as you other drives but it won't this time.

Nov 2, 2009Well, running Windows 7 ultimate on a Dell xps m1330 laptop. Everything looks good, but at work I am connected to a matrox triple-head-to-go device which is connected to (3) 22' monitors (3840x1280 resolution). Now when I connected it, ran the nvidia app, it found it and worked great.
Problem is I get home, no external connected, so running off the laptop with the basic resolution, I am trying to start apps (firefox, stickies, etc.) and I guess they were in other spots at work as I don't see them.
I forced a close on FF, then re-started, rt clicking and maximizing which worked, but then other apps like stickies don't have that option. An alt-tab shows it running in the lower right (see screenshot), but there is absolutely no way of getting to the app! I did close the app completely and restarted, but it does restart in a location not on the screen.
BSOD When Connected To External Monitor Using Display-Port?
Jul 6, 2011I am getting a lot of BSOD when my laptop is connected to an external monitor using a display-port cable.The system is fine when I don't use a external monitor and use just laptop screen. External monitor is a Dell 30inch. I have tried different display-port cables, different monitors, tried connecting via vga...still get BSOD, so I am thinking the problem is more on the windows 7/software side rather than hardware.
1. Uninstall AVG free edition 2011
2. Upgraded network-gigabit driver directly from intel instead of Lenovo
3a. Upgraded Nvidia drivers directly from nvidia for Quadro 1000m (ver 8.17.12.7533 - 5/20/2011) - got BSOD within 30min
3b. Downgraded Nvidia drivers to version from Lenovo (ver 8.17.12.6696 - 2/2/2011) - still get BSOD but there is more time between BSODs.
I am using a lenovo w520 laptop, win 7 SP1, x64. 8gb memory, intel 510 solid-state drive, Nvidia Quadro 1000 and Intel HD Graphics 3000, No-Anti-Virus and running zone-alarm firewall.

Feb 4, 2013My burner stopped working for some reason so I am attempting to install Windows7 64 from an old external IDE hard drive 2.5. I still have xp 32 and will install Windows 7 on an empty partition or erase the whole disk.The problem is I don't know how to make the external drive boot the image. The drive itself is connected via USB. I put the image of Windows 7 OS on the external disk but nothing happens. BIOS recognizes it as a USB device but wont boot. I tried windows7 DVD download tool which has an USB option, but it can't see the disk at all, doesn't recognizes it as a USB drive. Then I tried a small utility named Kon-Bot. It saw it as USB drive and created some sort of boot but when I tried to install the OS the installation screen of windows7 didn't come up.

Dec 27, 2012i recently tried to upgrade my computer by installing a new OCZ Agility III SSD. I didn't really want to reinstall windows as it is an OEM install and I dont have the disk. I therefore took the supposedly easy way out and bought a OCZ SSD Upgrade kit which contained Acronis True Image HD software to "Easily Clone and Transfer Data" as per the front of the box.The existing drives were 2 Seagate 500GB drive in a RAID0 Configuration All seemed to go well with cloning the drive, booting off the SSD until I noticed that no mass storage devices I have were being recognised anymore, all of which worked perfectly with the old RAID0 drives.
I have tried everything that I can find on this forum to no avail, however, I am not a computer expert, but a reasonably competent home user. On my motherboard (Foxconn H67MP), I have 2 yellow and 4 blue SATA ports. At the moment, I have the SSD in a blue port and have left the old disks in a RAID array on the yellow ones as I think they are the only ports that support RAID. During the installation, I repartitioned the RAID drives to create a backup partition which may or may not be relevant?I have 3 External HD, 2 WD and an Iomega all of which worked before installing the SSD. The WDs are USB powered and the Iomega (shows in device manager as Samsung HD503HI) is externally powered but none of them show in disk management. I can see the drives in device manager with a yellow warning triangle, however not in disk management. I have tried uninstalling the drives, the USB controllers, disabling power management?
