How To Install Windows 7 On USB Flash Drive or External Hard DriveSupposedly this is the way to install Windows 7 on a External HDD. Anyone knows if it works? cause the harddrive on my laptop is fried and I cant afford a new one, but If I can just install Windows 7 onto my ext. hdd (using my tower) i'll be good to go.
My burner stopped working for some reason so I am attempting to install Windows7 64 from an old external IDE hard drive 2.5. I still have xp 32 and will install Windows 7 on an empty partition or erase the whole disk. The problem is I don't know how to make the external drive boot the image. The drive itself is connected via USB. I put the image of Windows 7 OS on the external disk but nothing happens. BIOS recognizes it as a USB device but wont boot. I tried windows7 DVD download tool which has an USB option, but it can't see the disk at all, doesn't recognizes it as a USB drive. Then I tried a small utility named Kon-Bot. It saw it as USB drive and created some sort of boot but when I tried to install the OS the installation screen of windows7 didn't come up.
Would just like to know if its possible to install the Windows 7 OS on an external HDD and if so how do i do it? I have a Seagate 2TB Expansion desktop External HDD, which i have created 4 partitions, 3 of the 4 partitions are used up so i thought it be kinda cool to have an OS on the External. When i try installing straight onto the external disk, i get an error saying that windows cannot be installed on a USB drive or IEE 1394
I recently bought a new laptop and decided to run Ubuntu on it. I'm fairly content with the OS, after figuring out how it works. The only problem is, I'm having trouble getting my nVidia Optimus card to switch to 3d acceleration (can't get Bumblebee to run).I figured I might as well avoid all the issues with trying to run games via Ubuntu and simply dual boot Win7 as well. I'm facing a dillema though.Apperantly I'm unable to repartition my harddrive without formatting the entire thing. Obviously, I'd like to avoid having to reinstall everything.I was thinking of installing Win7 on an external HD and running it from there, my only question is, how will this effect performanceI have a Samsung 1TB FAT32 external HD lying around which draws power and data from a single USB2 slot (no seperate adapter). How effective will it be to install and run both windows 7 and graphically instense games from it?
i recently tried to upgrade my computer by installing a new OCZ Agility III SSD. I didn't really want to reinstall windows as it is an OEM install and I dont have the disk. I therefore took the supposedly easy way out and bought a OCZ SSD Upgrade kit which contained Acronis True Image HD software to "Easily Clone and Transfer Data" as per the front of the box.The existing drives were 2 Seagate 500GB drive in a RAID0 Configuration All seemed to go well with cloning the drive, booting off the SSD until I noticed that no mass storage devices I have were being recognised anymore, all of which worked perfectly with the old RAID0 drives.
I have tried everything that I can find on this forum to no avail, however, I am not a computer expert, but a reasonably competent home user. On my motherboard (Foxconn H67MP), I have 2 yellow and 4 blue SATA ports. At the moment, I have the SSD in a blue port and have left the old disks in a RAID array on the yellow ones as I think they are the only ports that support RAID. During the installation, I repartitioned the RAID drives to create a backup partition which may or may not be relevant?I have 3 External HD, 2 WD and an Iomega all of which worked before installing the SSD. The WDs are USB powered and the Iomega (shows in device manager as Samsung HD503HI) is externally powered but none of them show in disk management. I can see the drives in device manager with a yellow warning triangle, however not in disk management. I have tried uninstalling the drives, the USB controllers, disabling power management?
I have a compaq c772 laptop, and it's internal dvd writer is damaged. I have bought a new asus external DVD-RW, but when i tried to boot from the external dvd-rw, it did not boot.on start i pressed f9 and select the asus cd-rom to boot, but after spining the disc for a while it is booting the installed version from harddisk.
Laptop: Dell Vostro V131 OS: Windows 7 Pro 64-bit External DVD: Samsung SE-208
My external DVD works fine with the Windows 7 preinstalled in my new laptop. But when I try to re-install the Windows 7... The laptop recognizes well the external DVD The Windows 7 disc boots fine from the external DVD After that, the installation process asks for the external DVD drivers. The same thing happend with an external LG DVD.
Can I install Windows 7 for the first time, on a new computer, using an External DVD-Drive through USB? I have used 2600$ on this computer, and I think I can afford a DVD-Drive too, but i really dont need one, thats why an external one might be smarter.
well i've got a dvd burner that i can hook up to my rig via a usb port i was wondering if i can install windows via that or do i need an internal dvd burner/reader in order to install the os?
wil i be able to install windows 7 from a external optical drive? and if so. what would be a good optical drive to get? that is really good and reliable?
Just upgraded all my hardware and windows needs reinstalling to reconfigure.Trouble is my existing dvd drives are IDE and my new motherboard has no IDE port. I have a copy of windows 7 on an external hard drive in the form of an iso and various files. Is it possible to plug it into a USB port and use the external to install 7 onto the internal? I'd rather not have to buy a Sata DVD drive.Would I need to wipe everything but windows 7 on the external
I'm using a GA z77x-UD5H and it has its own UEFI dualBios. I am using an external dvd drive to try and install windows 7 because I just built this pc. I have nothing on my HDD yet. All I am trying to do is figure out how to boot using the DVD drive to install windows.

I have a laptop with a broken LCD. I can hook it up to a monitor to use, but the monitor doesn't work until Windows starts. I am trying to install XP onto the hard drive from my Windows 7 computer but am getting the "blocked due to compatibility issues" message. Is it possible to do it?
I am atempting to install windows 7 and XP on a 500gb disk drive, I also have an 80gb drive with Linux currently running on it. Is there anything that I should do so that I can access all three
I have a HP built box that I purchased less than a year ago. The hard drive died, along with the motherboard.I purchased a new hard drive and the full version of Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit and had the shop replace the MB, Install the new hard drive and O/S.The motherboard is an ASUS M4A785-M, with an on-board Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller (according to Windows Device Manager).I have a couple of additional cards installed, one is an eSata controller for an external hard drive and the other is a SIIG DP FireWire 800 3-Port PCIe card.I initially installed the SIIG because the FireWire chip set is Texas Instruments, because I have a PreSonus Firestudio Mobile (sound card, recording hardware)and it only plays nicely with Texas Instruments. The SIIG card shows up in Device Manager under IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers as "Texas Instruments 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller", which I "assume" is correct?
My problem is the PreSonus hardware refuses show up in Device Manager or initialize (there is an indicator light on the front of the unit that will glow blue when it is connected or flash blue-red when it isn't). PreSonus has a driver set for the Firestudio Mobile, that is called Universal Control.I have attempted to install Universal Control several times, but each attempt has resulted in failure, with the Driver version showing 0.0.0 etc. I realize this is the problem, but I have no idea how to force the issue. If I could get the PreSonus drivers to install, I would be home free (I think).he PreSonus hardware should show up in Device Manager under Sound, video and game controllers, but it doesn't.I have also posted about the issue on the PreSonus forum, but haven't had any solutions posted. This computer and the hardware are what I use to run my Recording Studio and without the Firestudio, I am effectively out of business.I should also note, that I haven't even installed any other software beyond windows 7, other than a couple of utilities. Not even my DAW or the drivers for my peripheral midi devices.
I just discovered my DVD/CD drive is not working when I attempted to launch the windows 7 iso file 64bit.
So I used isobuster to extract the files to an external harddrive ( over 300 gig). However when I try to run the setup.exe file, I get the message "setup.exe is not a valid win32 app" - not sure why? My pc has 4 gig RAM and has AMD Athlon 64 processor?
I know that you just have to plug an external hard drive in to a computer and it works right away. My problem is, I used my external hard drive so I could tape TV shows on my Bell Express Vu receiver. I disconnected the external drive and want to use it on my computer but for some reason, I can't get it to work. It shows up under Devices and it's called "Desktop". Can't see what's on it or even open it. Normally they will show up under the same area as you other drives but it won't this time.
I have tried installing on 1 stick of ram, the old HDD is unplugged, have deleted the partitions, running bios in AHCI mode using 6gb/sec cable, when I look in the drive some windows files have been copied onto the SSD and it is accessable. It is a Corsair Force series 3 120Gb.
.I didn't wait for the computer to tell me it was ok to remove the drive in the usb port. Now my computer no longer recognizes the external drive After removing my external hard drive (without the ok) my computer no longer recognizes the external hard drive. What do I do.
I've been sorting through forums, and have opt'd out to just asking. I have: Windows 7 - 64bit, Hp pavilion dv7-4265dx laptop, AMD Phenom II, with the newest Bios available on Hp Support website.I need: My WD 3TB Cavalier external to be readable on my windows machine. (Just bought it from newegg.)
The drive letter will not show itself under my computer, so I cannot format quickly; which isn't terrible, because I plan to encrypt it with Truecrypt. But both Truecrypt and Easeus are only able to detect 2TB, not the full 3. I have even gone to cmd and ran diskscan, but that will only show 2TB. I understand that it's a whole disk size issue; but I've read that some people see two separate partitions, that equal 3, but I don't even get that.
[Update] I converted the new unallocated drive to GPT in disk management. Right click drive > convert to GPT Disk... it increased the drive from 2048GB to 2047.87GB.
I am going to build my own PC soon, but I'm going to keep my current hard drive and use it for my new PC. I have a 500GB external HD as backup, my question is could I install a copy of Windows 7, and use that to boot from with no hard drive in PCI want 2 PCs in my house one to use for stricly backup purposes. My plan is to put a wireless card in my old PC - share a folder - and constantly put files, videossongs, etc... into that folder so it gets backed up on the external HDMy next question is, if I am able to boot with the external HD, can I use the external HD on different PCs? Not to boot Windows - but just to recover files?
Trying to install wd 1600 external hd to windows 7. I have used it on xp for backup, formatted it and tried to install it. It appears in 'devices and printers', where it has been given a driver, but has no drive letter on the 'computer' page. The disk is spinning and the unit gave no trouble in the past.
i`ve saved alot of my files i had on my previous os (xp pro) on my expansion external drive. now i`m running on windows 7 i can not access the drive as it says it needs formatting. i`ve looked in disk manager and it is showing RAW. i really need these files and they are they only back up i have. i wouldv`e thought it would have been a simple install but it`s proving very different. my expansion drive is a seagat 1TB.
I have 2 external HDD's. Neither will "pop up" in win7 or show up in the sidebar of explorer. They do show up in Disk Management, and Devices and Printers. They also show up in this program called "MiniTool Partition Wizard". In fact, I reformatted the drive using Win7, instead of Ubuntu, to see if that would help. NOTHING. I've tried several suggestions found on windows forums, stackexchange sites, yahoo answers, even posting questions in all those places.
I have posted in other forums with no luck.I bought a Samsung SH-D162D DVD Drive in a USB enclosure to connect to my Toshiba laptop via USB.I cannot get windows 7 to find it! When I plug in the USB cable the balloon comes up to say it has been installed (sometimes), I can see it on for about 1 or 2 minutes then it drops off. It isnt listed in my hardware or anything. Its not found in Disk Management or My Devices so it isnt a case of changing the drive letter - i cant find the drive to change it.I have also tried to find the upper and lower settings in regedit....couldnt find them so couldnt delete them as advised in other posts of this nature. It is set to master, the IDE connector and power connectors are fine. Its gotta be a windows 7 problem cause it does show up very breifly. In the minute or 2 its there I cant do anything with it...it just hangs although it will open and close. Ive googled it and cant find anything.Ive also connected it up to another laptop with XP and had no problems so I know the DVD Rom works fine and all the cables are ok.Ive tried in all 4 USB ports on my laptop and also turned off all energy settings...all with no luck. And I also have EVERY windows 7 update.
Heres exactly what happens from power off on the enclosure.
1 - I plug in the USB lead then turn on power to the enclosure.
2 - I quickly go to Start, and I can see the DVD Rom drive E next to my laptops dvd rom.
3 - The green bar at the top starts filling up from left to right and gets about half way then suddenly the DVD Rom icon disappears and so does the green bar.
4 - It then flashes up under the laptops DVD Rom icon with a Local Disk drive E but only for a split second.
5 - Sometimes a balloon comes up saying installing device, then device successfully installed...but not every time.
I found a link to this but it was 459 days ago.Suggested starting a new thread.I discovered my original PC usb modem (circa 2001) so I tried the set-up procedure and it informs me my fax is installed correctly.I tried to send to my own number, before I set-up receive faxes.I also tried to send to "fax toy" just to test the set-up.All give the message "pending".I have connected to the same telephone connection as my home phone.
