Link To Instructions For Creating An Installer On A USB2.0 Flash Drive?

Aug 30, 2011

I have a Windows 7 installer DVD, but I would like to transfer the files to a USB 2.0 flash stick to install from there instead of a DVD. Can someone post a link to instructions for this and the software I need to put the files on the flash and make it bootable. There seem to be a number of applications that do this, but I would like to know that I am using something that is safe and proven to work well.

Creating A Bootable Flash Drive To Install Win 7

Jan 1, 2010

I noticed on the forums over the last few months, many people for one reason or another having problems getting their DVD drive to boot from their newly purchased Windows 7 DVD disks, but given that many retails and e-tailers will not accept boxed software returns, I thought I would write up a quick guide on how to create a bootable flash drive that you can install Windows 7 from. This guide can also apply to those who can boot from the DVD, but are having problems finishing the install process.

Windows 7 Creating Alphabetized Headers And Organizing Contents Of Flash Drives?

Mar 11, 2012

Windows 7 HP has suddenly started to create headers for the alphabetical groups it has started to organize the contents of my flash drives into. Here is an example: The headers were not there last week, they have not been there since the system was built a year ago, they are not on the drives themselves and they do not appear when the flash drives are plugged into my XP system. I have made no changes that would account for the appearance of these headers during the past week or so.

Installer Not Seeing Second Hard Drive

Jun 28, 2009

I am trying to install Windows 7 onto a secondary internal hard drive. Am hoping to have a dual boot windows 7 RC/XP.

I am mounting the image off of my primary hard drive using Virtual CloneDrive in XP home.

When I get to the screen that allows me to choose where to install Windows 7, it only shows drive 0, my C: Drive.

Drive 1, the D: Drive has been wiped and formatted. It has a volume name. BIOS is up to date.

If I click load driver on this screen, the D: Drive shows in the directory tree. The drive also works fine in XP.

Creating A New Partition On D: Drive?

Sep 15, 2011

I'm thinking of installing Windows 8 on my second hard drive. I'm downloading it right now.

I would like to create a new partition for it so that it isn't on the same volume with my data files. I've done this often using 3rd party software but never using Windows 7 disk manager.

I have my D: drive backed up and will update it before I try anything but is this reasonably straight forward or are there pitfalls I should look out for?

I could always format the disk create the partition and then after installing Windows 8 restore all my data to D: again, but I'd like to keep it as simple as possible. There's over 500 gigs of stuff on my 1TB drive.

Creating A Windows 7 Image Of The C: Drive Only

Jun 18, 2011

I recently installed an SSD in my laptop and moved the HDD to the secondary drive (I have room for two). I did a few of the prescribed steps for optimal SSD usage (moved user profiles to HDD, moved temp directory and page file, etc). Initially I was able to image only my C drive (about 30GB required). This was when I could still dual boot to my original partition on the HDD.

I've since removed the old Windows 7 install from the HDD and made it a single partition. However, now when I try to make a drive image I'm unable to deselect my HDD when creating an image. I'm given no option except to create an image for both drives with a resulting size of 209GB. I'm already backing up my user data already and don't want to include it in the image.

When I view the disk manager my HDD (drive E) is Disk 0 and my SSD (drive C) is Disk 1. I've run bcdboot c:windows /s c: to ensure I have the boot files on my SSD. I'm able to boot my machine on the SSD if I disconnect my HDD but it doesn' like that my profile isn't available. I've also tried to change the disk order in my laptop BIOS but I don't have the option of changing the order of the individual disks.

What I want to do is be able to do is image only my SSD and not the entire system. I also want to do it on a regular basis and avoid having to open up my laptop and disconnect the HDD.

Is this related to the order of my disks in the disk manager or is that just a red herring? How do I make it so I can only select the SSD when creating a disk image?

Stop Creating File.db And Recent.db On USB Drive?

Jan 12, 2013

When I plug in a USB flash drive, it's creating 2 files: file.db and recent.db These database files will open in notepad. File.db seems to be a list of all files on the flash drive and recent.db is a list of recently accessed files on the drive. If I delete them, it just recreates them. I don't see similar files on my C drive. Also, my work computer running Windows 7 Enterprise does not create them when I insert a USB drive. As a matter of privacy, I'd rather not have lists of my files on the drives.

Creating A Recovery Disk From A USB Thumb Drive

Aug 27, 2009

I installed 7 on my Dell laptop that has no CD-ROM drive. I created a partition (D and set it to Active, installed from that partition, doing a quick format over Vista (C.

All was fine and dandy, but I was getting some boot option, I'm assuming because the Active drive had the install files on it. No problem, I'll set the C: partition to Active.

Reboot, should go away right? Wrong. "Bootmgr is missing."

No problem, there has to be a way to fix this. I'll put the CD in and recover... Or not!

What I have is a 2 gig USB thumbdrive, is there anyway to fix this problem with that? If not, what are my options.

Using the factory Dell restore to get Vista back won't work, I bought the laptop secondhand and they screwed that up.

Internal Flash Reader - No Drive Letters (not A Hide Empty Drive)

Oct 8, 2012

Before I even go further: yes, the "hide empty drives" has been unchecked)I had to reinstall my machine and I was able to to see the drive letters for the internal flash card reader. However I think something might have gone wrong when I give my external HDD a drive letter that was held by one of the flash card reader).I wrote "I think" because I am not really sure since I never wanted to use the internal card reader till today so I never noticed there was an issue. Anyway, the internal card reader does not show up even when I insert a card in the reader. Basically nothing happens. I have uninstalled the "USB Mass storage device" and it gets installed without any issue but the problem is still there: I can't see the reader. the INTERNAL flash card reader has a USB slot and when I insert a EXTERNAL flash drive, the EXTERNAL flash drive shows up.

Hard Link Issues Related To Drive Letter

Dec 25, 2009

Yesterday night I finally got the time around to finish the fresh installation of Windows 7, and I created a hard link for both my "Program Files" and "Program Files (x86)" using the command prompt in the Windows 7 installation disk.

The hard link points to another partition(E:) which I use to store Program Files purely. However, at the time of creating the hard link using the Windows 7 Installation disc, the volume letters were different than what it was in Windows. Now when I tried to access my files from Windows, it would give me an error. To better illustrate the problem,

The image above shows the hard link in (C:) and the volume which I link to (E:)

The image above shows the hard link and the directory it links to in E:. Notice that the Internet Explorer 8 on taskbar is no longer available. On the other hand, when I tried to install Firefox on "C:Program Files (x86)", it would be put in "C:ProgramData" which appears to be a new backup system that Microsoft used in case "Program Files" folder was deleted.

I know I'm in for another re-install, but what should I do to make the hard links work properly?

USB Flash Drive Is No Longer Seen As A Drive Or In Disc Management

Sep 26, 2012

I know, should have a backup, I was actually about to create a backup when the flash drive failed on me unfortunately. My newest backup is from about 5 days ago, so I'd prefer to be able to restore the current files.

I moved the drive over to another computer and tried to save a file but when I checked again the file was gone, like it never saved at all. Subsequently, after removing and plugging it back in the computer did not detect the drive (or see it in disc management). It does show up as a generic USB drive in the device manager, but there are no properties for it.

When I add it to a computer, it still adds drivers for it, but then nothing happens after that. It may also be a hardware problem, since the drive fell on the ground pretty hard a while back, but seemed to be working fine. There isn't an easy way to open it up and check.

I also tried using a few data recovery programs, but they couldn't detect the drive either.

Asrock Mobo / Usb2

Oct 31, 2009

I have an asrock 775dual-VSTA and I recently upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate, 32bit.

Things seemed fine, but I realized my USB was performing very slowly.

For example, it takes hours and hours just to upload a few albums to my iPod.

I presume it's a motherboard driver problem. Does anyone know of a fix for this? I dont see any Windows 7 drivers from Asrock for this Mobo.

Im *really* hoping I dont have to buy a new one.

Here are some screenshots from my Device Manager. As you can see, USB seems to be fine, but there are those unknown devices that I have no idea what they are. As far as I can tell, everything is working fine except the USB speed so I presume these unknown devices are related?
