New Disk Drive - Cloning One Partition Of Multi-part Drive?

Aug 13, 2012

I have a generic System 7 64 bit system with a 1 TB SATA drive. It has one hard drive which I have partitioned into 4 partitions, with C: being where I put all the system software. The board has mulitple SATA ports.Change considered: cloning the C: partition onto a new SSD so that I can get the performance boost of an SSD. There are some heat problems with existing hard drive so I probably need to change it out, so I would also like to clone the D:, E:, and F: partitions to a new hard drive.I have cloned a single physical drive to another physical drive, and the software (Ghost, or the like) usually handles it ok, so that all I need to do is adjust some partition sizes, and then disconnect the old hard drive and everyting is good. This includes cloning a single hard drive with multiple partitions to being cloned to a new single hard drive with identical numbers of partitions.Compared to my prior experience, is there something different about cloning one partition only vs cloning the whole drive. My proposed plan is:

1) Install SSD
2) clone C: to SSD only
3) clone D: E: F: of old drive to new drive.
4) remove old drive.

Installation copiers Multi Boot OS with Multi software?

I have just just purchased some new PC with different configration AMD Phenom II X4 965, Gigabyte 890GLX Motherboard, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD and 2nd AMD Athalon 635 with Gigbyte 875 Mothboard -4 GB RAM, 500GB HDD.I want to use these machines for Gaming as well as for teaching and for Internet browsing and web site development

What i Did i had Installed Multiple OS Windows XP SP3 32Bit, Windows XP SP2 64 Bit, Windows 2003 server 32 and 64 bit, Windows Vista 32 & 64 Bit, Windows 2008 server 32 and 64 bit , Windows 7 32 and 64 bit.

Now i want to install general softwares like Office, Adobe Master collection cs5 , Autocad, Coral , Visual studio Java, C, SQl Server, Oracle and the list caries on

I want that i dont have to install these software again and again on every software so that the space is not occupied and i can use same program files folder for each and every OS and time is also saved from installing the software.

For that i have seen some installation copiers (backups) which remain in memory before installation and records the information of registry and system files being copied and records and the can again be copied to the different OS.

Is there any ways to do these which installation copier backup is good for doing this . finding such softwares which can copy or backup installation files registries and i can just use the same installers.

Wrong Drive Letters In Multi Boot XP,Vista, Win7

Jun 29, 2009

FIX (with SavePart, tried other partition utilities and editing MountedDevices to no avail)

Hope this helps someone else with Wrong Drive Letter Problems

Installed Windows 7 RC and all was well with XP Dual Boot.

After some experimenting(BSD,LINUX,etc), Windows 7 would not boot, so popped in the DVD and let Windows 7 repair the boot.

Windows 7 now booted, but when booting XP on E: , it was now assigned the wrong Drive letter D: and would boot to just before the Logon Prompt and hang(same in safe mode.)

After much research and trial (including editing the HKLM/SYSTEM/MountedDevices hive of the XP install from within Windows 7 to change the drive letter) this was the fix.

This particular XP boots from Partition/Drive E: in Windows.0 directory (yeah, i know, been this way for years)

FIX: (FREE!)

downloaded SavePart "AKA Partition Saving " Partition Saving

Boot from a FreeDOS Floppy or USB stick and run SavePart.exe

within SavePart (navigate with TAB key, Selected items turn BLACK)

Choose:

Update Windows 2000/XP/Vista Registry

then
Choose element where boot configuration are stored (Disk number 0, in this case)

then
Choose element where boot configuration DATA are stored (Partition) where the XP(2000 or Vista) is located

then
Select the Directory where the XP (2000 or Vista) is located (Windows.0 on D Drive, in this case)

You then have access/ability to the change Drive Letters for that particular Windows Installation:

In this case:

Drive D (which needed to be E) and Drive E(which needed to be D)

Installer Not Seeing Second Hard Drive

Jun 28, 2009

I am trying to install Windows 7 onto a secondary internal hard drive. Am hoping to have a dual boot windows 7 RC/XP.

I am mounting the image off of my primary hard drive using Virtual CloneDrive in XP home.

When I get to the screen that allows me to choose where to install Windows 7, it only shows drive 0, my C: Drive.

Drive 1, the D: Drive has been wiped and formatted. It has a volume name. BIOS is up to date.

If I click load driver on this screen, the D: Drive shows in the directory tree. The drive also works fine in XP.

Computer Super Slow After Complete Windows 7 Reinstall

Feb 3, 2013

I got some bad malware and removed it with a complete re-install of windows 7. I deleted all partitions and re-installed Windows 7 from that point. I went to the Gateway website and got all of the drivers for the equipment on the computer and it still runs painfully slow. I've run CCcleaner several times, done DSKCHK (because I suspected my hard drive might be faulty) and everything says I have no problems.

Windows 7 64bit Computer Running Super Slow - No Errors

Apr 15, 2012

First off my power supply went out. It was a 450watt one I ordered and replaced it with a 750watt power supply. After I replaced the power supply, my computer would not boot, When the power supply went out it was in the middle of updating windows. So I formatted the hard drive and did a clean install of windows, reloaded all my drivers and extra programs. At that point my computer was running great.

I decided to uninstall Bing tool bar, and windows live sign in assistant. it prompted my to reboot. When I rebooted the computer, after about 30 minutes it still had not come up to the desktop, I could boot up in safe mode and it would run fine. I did a system restore, no change, I did a start up repair, no change, Tested the memory it came back fine.

At that point and reformatted the hard drive again, I had another hard drive formatted it and put the install CD in and after 8 hours it is still trying to install Windows 7, No errors just really really slow. So I have replaced the power supply, hard drive, and ran a memory test with no errors, done a clean install of windows. Running Windows 7 64 bit, 4 gig of Ram, 2.8 dual core processor, 1 gig video card, 500 gig hard drive.

Super Slow Windows Install On Asrock 870 Extreme 3 With RealSSD C300

Oct 28, 2011

I am trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate x64 with SP 1 original unmodified MS Technet ISO to a blank Crucial RealSSD C300 SSD drive and it is taking hours to do that. The last time I did the install it took almost 4 hours to copy the files, I tried it from a DVD drive and from an external USB-HDD and there was no speed difference. After the installation was done, the SSD was very fast though, no problems at all then.

Now I have to install again and I do not want to wait again a half day just for the files to copy. My Mainboard is a ASROCK 870 Extreme 3 , I use AHCI , AMD AHCI Bios is disabled and AHCI is enabled for SATA3_5 and 6 .

Multi Booting Windows XP And 7

Jan 6, 2010

I am planning on buying a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) so I can run DX 10 and 11 and install more memory in my computer.

I currently have two hard drives installed on my computer,

(1) a 160 GB (split into 3 partitions) with Windows XP (32-bit) installed on one of those partitions

(2) a new 640 GB with only a few files on it that can be deleted.

I want to be able to have the option of starting up in either XP or 7.

My question is this: if I install 7 on the new HD, will I still be able to see that Hard Drive's space in XP (and vice versa with 7)? Will I still be able to install and run programs from both drives in both OS's? Will installing an OS in the second drive restrict the use of the space on that drive by other OS's?

I would assume that it should work fine, but I wanted to find out if anybody has had problems with this before I go and spend $100.

Computer Is Being Super Laggy

Sep 14, 2009

OK, so my computer had a complete meltdown the other day... right after Windows 7 failed to boot, my Linux started having kernel panics and freezing every 5 minutes... so I backed up the Windows partition's files, and wiped the drive (By wiped I mean I deleted the partition, I didn't use a "disk wiping" tool)

Well Linux reinstalled perfectly fine, so I figured it wasn't a hardware failure like I thought it could be... I even used the memtest feature for several hours and it all came back fine.

Well, I reinstalled Windows 7 not once, not twice, but THREE times. The first time, I put all my Windows files back right away (including the Windows folder), but it still had the brand-new look and not my old settings so I wiped it. The second time, literally 5 minutes after I installed it, Windows Update froze up right after installing my Wi-Fi drivers and locked up the entire computer... and after force-rebooting it it became super-sluggish like it was before I reinstalled it (like when I posted on here last time)

This most recent time it worked correctly, but it still doesn't seem to be as fast as when I first installed it. If I plug in my external hard drive with the Windows files, it seems to lock EVEYRTHING up... almost as if my old Windows partition was cursed or something. I deleted the "Windows" folder from it so there was nothing possibly corrupted there, but it still doesn't seem to be perfect.

Well, even with it unplugged, it's frozen up several times now. I only had maybe 3 programs running at once... it's not like I was overloading the computer. I just tried installing Paint.NET and it completely froze my computer twice and now the installer simply won't run. What's even weirder is I did a "chkdsk" from a command prompt, and while it found nothing wrong with my disc, it stopped around 65% and sat there for several minutes. Same as before I wiped out my drive.

I tried sfc /scannow and it terminated at 14%, saying the service couldn't complete...

I might try that again in safe mode, but still, something is still messed up with Windows. Does anybody have any ideas? I mean, would it be likely there's some bad sectors on my drive that Windows can't find? Would defragmenting help? I guess I just don't understand what's going on... I've wiped the drive a few times now and it's still not working perfectly.

Can't Multi-boot Two Loads Of Windows 7

Jun 23, 2011

I'm setting up my system drive with 3 operating systems:

1) Windows 7 64 bit (for home use)
2) Win XP (for legacy programs)
3) Windows 7 64 bit (for work use)

...in that order on the hard drive. Rather than using Windows own boot manager, I'm using the open source GAG boot manager (which, like lots of third party boot managers, runs before any OS loads so you can pick which OS to run - and then hides the other OS's and their entire partitions until you reboot.) I've done this sort of thing with multiple WinXP loads before, no issues. In fact, this very hard disk used to have three WinXp loads on it (in position 1 and 3 above). I formatted those partitions and replaced them with the Win7 loads, which is when the problem started.Everything worked fine until I added the SECOND load of Win 7 (third on the hard drive, as above). It installs properly, but when I try to run it, it hangs on the "Starting Windows..." screen (and the spinning windows logo just stays spinning infinitely).if I then immediately reboot and run the FIRST load of Windows 7 (which was hidden, worked fine before, and lives on its own separate partition), I get a screen right away saying a problem happened last time I ran it! Which isn't true - the problem happened when I just ran the SECOND load of Windows 7, not the first! Remember, these Win7 loads are totally separate. But for some reason, it thinks there was a problem. It even asks me if I want to enter repair mode. Spooky...Anyway, I do NOT choose to repair and instead just say "run normally". And everything then boots fine. (Of course!) And sure enough, if I shut down and simply choose to run that same first load of Win7 a second time, it again works with no problems reported. BUT... if I then proceed to run the SECOND load of Windows 7, it again hangs on the "Starting Windows..." screen, and - you guessed it - if then try to run the FIRST copy of Win7, it will again report it had a problem last time it was loaded. Which starts the whole thing over again....
