How To Move From Domain To Workgroup
Jul 26, 2012
I'm helping someone with there Windows 7 Professional. They can't update it or get certain features to work. I know it is because they are on an old Work Domain. They no longer work for that company. But the Laptop is there's.I went to System and "changed settings" under "Computer Name Domain and Workgroup settings".I changed from "Work Network" to "Home Network".After restarting, ALL of there configurations and settings were gone. Outlook, ACT!, etc needed to be setup again. But the computer was able to access the features that they needed.Apparently the user account that we were using to log in into, was no longer available.I did a system restore to right before I changed to Home Network. How do I change to "Home Network" from "Work Domain" while still keeping ALL user settings, but getting rid of the lockdown that the Domain Policies Enforced?

I changed the domain on my work laptop to Workgroup so I could print on my local LAN at home and now I can not login using my user name and password. My laptop has a PGP total disk encryption. I can log in on the first PGP login screen. After that, Windows 7 login appears and I can not login using my usual name and password.

I have done this all before. In addition to
HKLMSystemCCSServicesLanmanWorkstationParameters
DWORD DomainCompatibilityMode = 1
DWORD DNSNameResolutionRequired = 0
I am using Samba 3.5.8 and I am trying to join a Windows 7 64Bit laptop to my domain.
HP Pavillion dv6
Intel core i5 CPU M 520 @ 2.40GHz 2.40Ghz
4.00 GB RAM
However when I try join the domain i get the following message:"The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "MYDOMAIN"The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. If I do a nslookup it resolves the domain controller, as well if i watch the traffic I can only see UDP traffic on that IP, however i can still browse the web from it?

I have a Laptop that I just installed Windows 7 on, and an XP machine. All is working well, including the networking, but I have what might be a silly question.
From the XP machine, why does the 7 machine not show up when I "View Workgroup Computers". I can get to it when I look in "My Network Places", but when I View the Network Computers, only the XP machine shows up when I'm on the XP machine.
The XP machine shows up on the 7 machine when I "View Network Computers and Devices" FWIW.

I am trying to set up a workgroup between two Windows 7 Pro computers over a wifi connection. I have set the workgroup name to be identical on both machines (Lastname-Home), but neither machine can see the other. Network discovery and sharing are turned on. From my googleing and forum searching (here and on other forums) all I can find is people saying that if the workgroup names match you should be able to see the PCs.

Does anyone have experience with windows 7 (32) not allowing the network workgroup name to match a username? Do to some existing procedures we would like the username & workgroup to be the same. This works fine on XP machines but not on the Windows 7 machine.

I cannot get this to work for the life of me. I have searched this forum, and others.
-I have set the workgroup identically on my windows 7 machine and my 10.6 MBP.
-I CAN smb to my windows 7 machine successfully.
-Neither my windows 7 or mac os x recognize one another in their respective network "browsers"
-With iTunes open on both machines, it successfully recognizes the libraries.
I am not a networking genius, but I'm fairly literate if someone could help me out, please.
This could be a whole separate issue, but even when connected to my windows 7 machine through VPN, the machines don't show up on their respective network "browsers"

I could 'see' my shared XP machine and my MacBook from my Windows 7 computer over my wireless network last night be cannot see them now. I can 'see' the Windows 7 from the XP machine on Workgroup computers but I cannot 'see' any computers from my Windows 7 network now.
I have seen another post like this but the solution there was to buy another wireless router but I just bought a new Netgear 11n router and it is working fine for Internet access.

I have had a Windows workgroup for years, linking PCs and Macs as well as a Linkstation Network Drive through a Time Capsule Router/Hard Drive Combo. Immediately after upgrading from Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional on my Sony Vaio VGN-Z750D, I can see the Time Capsule and MacBook but can not access the MacBook Pro. I am able to access the Linkstation and the Time Capsule. However, the system does not ask me for a username and password when I try to access the MacBook Pro, and I get an error message that Windows cannot access the MacBook. The problem seems to be on the Windows 7 end, for I am able to access the Sony on the MacBook Pro.
The workgroup name is the same on all computers. I had to reset the workgroup name on the Sony, because for some reason the Windows 7 upgrade renamed the workgroup name to WORKGROUP without asking. I reset it to the name used on all our mchines. The only variable changed is the Windows 7 upgrade.

I've added a new laptop to my home network (now 3 computers, all of them with win 7 ultimate 64) . I didn't use home group because i don't like it, so i configured everything manually and everything worked great, file sharing. printer sharing, everything. And then I added a password to my user on the new laptop to protect it and the sharing between the laptop and the two other computers stopped working. when i try to access the laptop from another computer it reports i have no access, and when i try to access one of the computers from the laptop it asks for a user name and password.i uninstalled firewall - didn't help. reinstalled. i removed the password - problem solved. added password again - problem returns.

My computer, with 7 RTM installed, is part of a corporate domain. I'm trying to access a shared folder on a 2000 Server, which is outside the domain. Using XP, 2003, or any other OS there I had no problem accessing the share with regular UNC e.g. computer. However, from the Win 7 computer I hit a brick wall every time.
The login window pops up and I can't login even though I'm using a valid user. The even stranger thing is that using XP mode does allow you to access, but that's hardly a solution. Is there some network/security setting I'm missing?

Skipped Vista, so I'm just learning to hate permissions in Windows 7. How do I enable the two other XP machines in the workgroup to access an entire drive on the Windows 7 machine? I've been able to set up access to individual folders (not even sure how I did that), but not to an entire drive - in this case data drive D.

I have one PC running 7100 and a Popcorn hour media streamer. Both connected to a router via cable.
Since i upgraded to 7100 from 7077 my PCH now cant see the workgroup in its network browser window but it connects to the shares i have set up on it from my PC.
All three devices have been rebooted many times over that past few days (the PC goes off at night, as does the PCH).
Ive not changed anything on the PCH and nothing on the PC although maybe something was reset when i upgraded. It wasn't a clean install but then it wasn't the previous time and i had no issues.
The PC can see and access the PCH without any problems.
Ive never had to mess with the windows firewall before to get this working but im now thinking maybe i need to.
Any ideas what can have happened. I know i should have done a clean install but as both devices are seeing each other (sort of) starting again is a last resort.

I have two pc's- one a Windows 7 the other is a xp. I have two streamers: Boxee Box and Pop Corn Hour. Through various trial/error I have determined I can't access the workgroup from both the Windows 7 and xp on either streamer. In other words, both streamers should be able to access workgroup on my network and neither can. I have tried resetting the router, both pc's, streamers etc. All files/folders set to share. I am not an expert but it seems since both streamers can't access my workgroup, the problem might be with windows.

my computer is a dell laptop Vostro13 with preloaded Windows 7 32 bit. I regularly lose my connection to the workgroup while all 4 other computers do not. i have shortcuts direct to various machines that fail. i can sometimes restart the network by going into the my network places section and it can then connect to the other workgroup computers but sometimes a full reboot is required. this happens sometimes multiple times in a day. i have turned off the power save settings that shut down wifi, i am using built-in wifi connection like the other machines on my workgroup are.

I have 2 PC's, both running Windows 7 Enterprise x86. The main PC has an internal drive and an external USB drive, both of which have shares a plenty. Until yesterday they worked fine. If I type \main-pc (from the main-pc) I can see all the shares but when I try and access them I get the message 'check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network'. The network diagnostic wizard doesn't find a problem. If I type \192.168.72 , which is the main-pc ip, into the run line, it cannot access the workgroup browse list and comes back with the same message about checking the spelling. The second PC can access the main PC shares without any problem at all, including via Ip address. When I ping the netbios name I am returned a valid IP.
Here's what I have done so far:
- Reinstalled the network card, tried another network card.
- Reinstalled client for ms networks and file and printer sharing.
- Completely disabled IPV6 using the DisabledComponents reg fix.
- Ran NETSH resets on winsock and ip stack.
- Reerun the network wizard, renamed the workgroup, changed the PC name, fiddled with homegroup (enabling/disabling), removed security software, disabled the firewall, disabled firewall through policy, uninstalled all windows updates in the last week.
I've used the net view command and can confirm all workgroup services are running. If I type net view I can see my PC..but the problem isn't just accessing my PC, I get exactly the same problem now when I try and access the second PC, which works fine if your on it locally. It could be the server service which the browser service requires, I've paused it and my results don't change but not sure how to troubleshoot that. I've had a go at some reg fixes and modified some security polices but have since put it all back the way it was. Might be worth mentioning I have had a network bridge active between 2 network cards but has never been an issue. I've removed the bridge and tried in both cards separately as well.

Had a strange issue on one of my clients business PCs. These 2 PC's are setup each year at a kiosk for tax preparation. They were working perfectly last year and were boxed up and stored for most of the year. Today I had to get the kiosk and 2 PC ad hoc network all setup and working again. Should have been easy as pie...But once I had them connected I couldnt attach to any shares from the "client" to the "server" (both running Windows 7). The "server" in this ad hoc had all of the shares from last year not shared anymore. It has to have approx 20 folders shared in order for their apps to work.I am suspecting that during the off season it was plugged into a different network and might have had the workgroup changed and then changed back before I arrived. Can anyone tell me if a workgroup name change would in fact change/delete the share permissions? I have googled and searched this site, but all I get are how to change a workgroup name or how to change share permissions.I know how to do that

I'm trying to share a folder on my computer (N:TV, where N is an internal hard disk) on my local area network. Two media centers connect to this folder. Until this week, they connected just fine using no username or password. Suddenly, they want to know a password -- and even entering my Windows credentials (my user account being the only one on the machine), access is denied.
I've selected the folder I want to share, and viewed its properties. It's shared with Everyone for reading. I can access the folder by opening \Mycomputer\TV in Explorer.Network discovery is turned off. File and printer sharing is turned on. Password protected sharing is turned off. All three machines are in the same workgroup.

It is easy to share a folder with Everyone, or to share it with other user accounts on the same computer, but how can I share a folder with a specific user account on ANOTHER computer in the workgroup?Reason: in my neighborhood, four friends are connected by cable to the same router, and we all belong to the same workgroup. Each computer has a folder (named "public") that we share with everyone else, but I also want to have another folder (named "private") that I can share with only other computers in my apartment, but not with my friends (on other apartments). How can I do this?

My new laptop running Windows 7 Professional and it is not easily recognizing other workgroup computers. When, and if, it does, it does not staying connected to other computers and a wireless printer on my workgroup.I have a desktop that is running Windows XP Home. It is sharing its printer and external hard drive to all computers in the workgroup. When I got on the router, I was able to get the Windows 7 machine to see XP box long enough to map a drive and load the printer. After rebooting, Windows 7 did not recognize the drive map or the printer. I pinged the XP box and got Destination Host unreachable. The only thing I can ping is the router. Also, when I went to load the wireless printer (with Windows 7 drivers) it did not see the printer even though the printers connection light is on. I have two Vista Business machines and one Windows 7 Home computers in my workgroup. These are not having any problems. From those other machines, they can ping each other but they cannot ping the new box.It is acting like a setting in Business has it isolated itself and is not allowing traffic. I have searched this problem and it seems to be common but I have not seen a post addressing the Business question. I have tried everything that the help files and forums stated (setting discovery, disabling IPv6, disabling firewall on both, uninstalling virus protection, etc.) with no result. Is there a setting in Business that would prevent it from being visible?
