How To Delete An Incomplete XP Installation On Boot And 2 Others
Aug 28, 2011
I have Win 7 installed and thats the only one I need. From what I see in the forum threads, in my case the MSCONFIG does not show 3 other previous versions of OS (1 XP, 1 incomplete installation XP and 1 DOS).I already tried from My Computer, Advanced Settings, Start Up and set to 0 the time elapsed to show other OS options at start up, but when I did it went directly to the incomplete installation of XP (instead of my default OS - Win 7)So, what I would like to know is that if I use the BCD software you recommed that will do the trick or if I need to try something else.

first of all i have a sony laptop with 7 ultimate 64bit, the problem started when i was using convertxtodvd (software) and watching Internet videos at the same time. i was watching online videos and had converxtodvd converting a video into dvd, (for maybe 15 mins?), then the computer suddenly frozed. i turned it off figure that maybe the laptop coundn't handle that much task. i turned it back on and probelms started to show, the explorer.exe started crashing every 5 to 8 mins after the computer starts up. i tweaked it a little bit, but i ended up with no success. so i decided to reboot the whole computer, but after the installation, i receive an error message just before i get to the preference screen (the screen where u choose your computer name and such) it states, "the computer restarted unexpectedly or encounter and unexpected error. windows installation cannot proceed. to install windows click "ok" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation. but the thing is this error message appears every time and i never get to the preference screen.could it be that something is broken internally? maybe the memory is faulty? graphic card is faulty? damaged? because i also remember back that my lil brother hit the laptop (the keyboard part) a couple of times (pretty hard too).

I have 2 hard drives, and my main hard drive has now become my secondary. I have managed to delete almost everything on the drive, except three mischievous undeleteable files. There is $RECYCLE.BIN, a folder called Boot with BCD and BCD.LOG which are to my efforts undeletable, and a folder calls System Volume Information, which seems to replicate itself each time I delete it. How can I delete these files? I have tried formatting, however windows will not let me format. Taking ownership does nothing to them. When I try to delete BCD or BCD.LOG: "The action can't be completed because the file is open in System."

My computer is knackered and I want to wipe it clean and start again. I don't want to keep ANY of what's on there as it had a virus that corrupted my internet explorer and I want to fix it. I have backed everything I do want up onto disk already. So I'm installing windows 7 custom installation from rebooting it as it says, but it gives me options to format or delete 3 partitions: 1 is a reserved small space (~1.5GB i think), the other is the vista operating system (~55GB), the last is a data partition (~50GB). So now I don't know which I can and can't delete in order to clean my computer completely, yet still have it working and working via windows 7! What is the difference between formatting and deleting anyway, will formatting clean my explorer of the virus it had?

While looking for solutions I seemed to come very close to finding someone with my exact problem, but not quite. Here goes:
I had a hard drive with Windows 7 installed. Everything worked, etc. Got a new hard drive, and installed 7 on there as well without making changed to the old hard drive (prompts displayed during new installation saying "old" windows files would be saved). I've been using it for a while now, however I want to use the old hard drive strictly for storage, so I tried to format it to clear the space out. I got the notice "Windows cannot complete format." Went to the forums and looked thru several suggestions, which brought me to try deleting the files individually.
Included in all this were attempts to give myself (the only user on the computer) full control of all files (which was already the case), to take ownership (via right click options AND command prompt "takeown" and "cacls"), to change permissions/ownership via "properties" for the drive/folders, command prompts to remove the "active" status of the old hard drive, as well as removing "boot" status from old drive (while making sure the new drive had "boot" status), tried everything I can think of using Disk Management AND the DiskPart utility, as well as countless other suggestions that I can barely remember. I'm still getting the "You need permission to perform this action." What I don't get is, if I'm THE administrator (and the only user), how do I not have access to this?
I'm sure there are some details I'm leaving out, but I've been at it for hours. Let me know if there's something you need to know. Running Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit, 4GB RAM, 3.2 Ghz AMD Athlon II.

I am currently having issues with my system recovery for windows 7. I have a partition on my computer for system recovery to its original state. Some how there were some drivers that got deleted or something happened to make the computer only have limited access to the internet, my audio stopped working, as well as the usb ports would read the mouse and keyboard but would fight to recognize my external hard drives. So i figured I would do a system restore on the computer by simply hitting F8 and running it in safe mode as I couldnt use the backup feature due to what ever got deleted. It went through the restore process and then at the end (or what i would assume to me be the end) during the software install stage it will make it to what would appear to be 99% done and continuously try and load the last parts before it finishes and states that the recovery was incomplete. I have ran diagnostics on the computer hardware (F2) durring the start up and everything seems to pass just fine. Also when the System recovery incomplete tab comes up if i choose to see the log i can see the windows screen in the background as well as log onto the internet which I wasnt able to do before. So something was fixed in the process as i couldnt log onto the net before and now i can log into windows lol. Im stuck and could use some advice as to how to fix it

A few days ago the search function in the Start Menu stopped working. Following instructions on a post on this site, I changed the value of an HKEY (can't recall which one any more) and it started working again. However, the results are now always incomplete. For example, I might type "ABC .xls" in the Start Menu bar to search for an Excel file called ABC. The immediate search results would be empty. However, if I click "See More Results", a window opens in Explorer and the search returns a hit.Because the search function in Explorer works fine, I think the indexing function is working properly. However, I rebuilt it anyway and the results are the same. why the search in the Start Menu produces incomplete results

In the act of trying to get my Velocity computer up and running (new P.S.U. and CDRom Drive) from a power spike at home I loaded 3 copies of Vista on the HD as I figgled with the BIOS boot order. To make a long story short: I was not able to get the system to boot and correctly complete the install of Vista and then Windows 7 (got a Windows upgrade disk with the machine years ago and had it, Win.7 running after the first week.). Now I have 3 incomplete installs of Vista sitting on the HD and I would like to get them off so I can make room for better things.

I have a GA B75M D3V (bios version F9), paired with Intel Core i5 3550 (Ivy Bridge), 2 x 4 GB Patriot Extreme DDR3 PC1600.Installed Windows 7 x64 Ultimate SP1 on it.Strange problem is, after using my computer for some time, perhaps an hour,or more, randomly, I can't completely shutdown my PC.After clicking shutdown on start menu, my PC react normal. But, after a while, the PC (case and everything inside it) like in stall state.and the monitor goes blank (no signal from the PC). So I have to press power button for 4 seconds to completely shut it down.

It's been a while, but I built my first PC a couple of months ago. So far everything works great. But now, My DVD drive doesn't show up in My Computer. I checked Device Manager, and I have an error for my driver. Here is the error:
"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"
I have tried using Driver Fusion to wipe out all drivers and reinstall with no change. The drive shows up in BIOS so it's not a connection problem. I'd prefer not to reinstall the OS....

I don't see my optical drive on my computer window box. I uninstalled the driver for my optical drive and reinstalled it (HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T50F). I still do not see the optical drive listed. In the device status window, under the general tab of the device manager window, is shown this message:
"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"
When I uninstall and allowed the computer to find the driver online, the same failure is shown. The computer window box still doesn't show my optical drive.

Dual booting XP Pro and Win 7. Used Gparted to shrink my original C: partition (XP) for room to install Win 7 Pro. Everything works quite well and I see myself putting XP into the bit bucket soon.
Now my question. Can I "just" delete the XP partition from Win 7 and regain the HDD space with Win 7's tools or will there be some problems with Win 7 after that? I've read several threads and am somewhat confused. Concerned that there might be some cross pollination between the two OS's (g) which will bork the Win 7 install.
Or should I just nuke both partitions, reset the size of the partition to its original size and reinstall Win 7?

I first installed WinXP on the first partition of hard disk - drive C:. After that I installed Windows 7 on a new created 4. partition of the HD. When I start Windows 7 using boot menue, drive C: ist now for Windows 7 and D: is for WinXP with following status displayed by disk managment:
C: startpartition, paging file, core dump, logical
D: system, active, primary
Because I dont need WinXP anymore, can I delete the partition of C: and install instead a new linux OS on it? Will D: automatically be the system and active drive?

I originally stated out with XP Pro and then installed Win 7 in a separate partition with dual booting. Now I want to get rid of the XP OS and recover the partition the XP OS is in for other uses.
Running bcdedit shows the the Win 7 as drive C and XP as drive D. The master boot record, I am guessing, in is drive D.
So how do I get the master boot record into the Win 7 partition so I can delete the partition containing the XP OS?

So I am dual booting XP and 7 at this point. However, I have no need for the XP OS now, and want to delete that partition.I've tried doing it via the command prompt way. When I type delete volume it says:"Virtual Disk Service error: The device is in use." but when I type in delete volume override it tells me:
"Virtual Disk Service error: Delete is not allowed on the current boot, system, pagefile, crashdump or hibernation volume."Is there a way to go about fixing this without wiping my entire drive and starting from scratch?

I TRIED FDISK COMMANDS ON A COMMAND PROMPT - NOT RECOGNIZED!f anyone here can just tell me in the most simple way how to delete the master boot record on both hard drives...I can't believe there is no utility to do this...should be a utility called "Delete MBR" in my honest opinion.

I had a dual boot with Windows 7 and Win8. I wanted to remove Win8 cause I was bored and didn't need it. I did everything right.
Dual Boot - Delete OS
But the boot manager failed. When I restarted I got an error saying that their is some invalid information. I didn't have the Win 7 disc, so I put the Win 8 disc and installed it in the partition that had win 8 before, hoping that it would recognized Win 7. But hasn't. So now I have a partition of Win 7 but it is not getting recognized.

Windows 7 needs to be restarted so much after installing software or anti-virus updates is that there are some system files that are in use while the computer is running and when the software needs to re-write these files it can only do so during reboots. This is why you need to re-boot a PC after software installation. Is my pal correct?
