Use Computer While Formatting Second Hard Drive?

I'm fully formatting a second hard drive in my computer and it's a 3tb drive so it's going to take a while. I was wondering if I could watch videos I have on my other drive or if that would cause the process to run less efficiently or even skip sectors it was supposed to check.

BIOS Won't Detect IDE Hard Drive

Dec 30, 2011

On my old secondary computer my setup was
Motherboard: Chaintech VNF2-350
Master 0: HDS722516VLAT80 with Windows installation
Slave 0: WD800BB-53CCB0

But then I started getting Machine Check Exceptions and my motherboard ultimately perished. So I replaced that with a Foxconn K8S755A-6ELRS. But this new motherboard won't detect the hard drive.

It will hang at the part that says "Detecting IDE drives", sometimes it will give up and display "0" where the drive is supposed to be, other times it will hang until you unplug the cable.

If it's on the same channel as the Hitachi drive with XP on it, the BIOS recognizes the other drive, but fails to boot from it. If they are on different channels, it boots the XP drive but will see no hint of the drive on the other channel., even in Disk Management or Device Manager.

I also tried connecting it to my other computer's Intel DP35DP mobo, and it was able to detect/read/write and all that, though it does have a few bad sectors.

Hard Drive Not Being Detected In BIOS

Apr 30, 2012

My hard drive, a WD Scorpio 200GB, is not being detected in bios. AHCI mode is enabled. When I go into the Advanced BIOS Features, all the master and slave configs are none; however, my SSD is recognized as I am on my computer right now using it. I tried every SATA Port, EVEN THE SATA PORT MY SSD IS INSTALLED ON, and it doesn't work; I tried 2 different cables and still no recognition; I tried 4 different hard drives and still no recognition, so it is not a problem with my motherboard, hard drives, or cables. What should I do? I have been trying to figure this out for 4 hours.

Hard Drive Stopped Working / Cannot Get Into The BIOS?

Oct 12, 2011

I have had an expensive time with my computer recently but i am now beyond the brink and turning the tide of war to my favour.I have recently kitted my ailing PC out with a new SSD for the OS install. This is working great; i have just tonight had to plug in a brand new GFX card for my gaming pc.(My GFX card burned out due to overheating, so i have now got a new case and proper cooling)Basically, my secondary hard disk (Files Storage etc) is not working, when plugged into my sata port my computer hangs at the Windows Loading screen, also i cannot get into the BIOS.If i unplug the hard drive (Not SSD, 500GB Hitachi) my computer boots in 14 seconds, and the bios works fine.I have concluded my secondary hard disk may be broken.if i can fix it as i can barely afford to buy a new one (even knowing they are cheap).Basically if it had broken i would expect my PC would say so, seems to me that it is just waiting for a response and sitting around for hours to get it

Intermittent BIOS Hard Drive Detection

Jul 5, 2011

Working on my friends desktop computer and the BIOS doesn't detect the hard drive all the time. If I cold boot or reset the machine the hard drive is not detected. However if I pull the CMOS battery and power cord then drain the capacitors (by pressing the power button) and replug the power the drive is detected by the BIOS and starts booting windows (then freezes). The Computer can boot from CDs fine (from IDE cd drives). When I power up the machine without draining all of it's power/ removing the power cord the BIOS gets stuck detecting the SATA drive. I tried the Hard drive in my machine it and worked fine so I don't think its a drive/cable problem. I also tried one of my known good WD drives in the machine and it doesn't detect it. I have tried replacing the signal cable. Default settings (no options for IDE/AHCI just enable or disable SATA). I'm not sure if windows freezing is a 2nd problem or part of the first.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-k9ns Version F9
Drive: seagate 500gb sata (also tried a WD green 500gb & black 1TB)

SSD Hard Drive - Use SATA As IDE Or AHCI In BIOS

Sep 28, 2012

I have just fitted a SSD drive in my computer windows 7 64 bit system, when I installed windows onto the new SSD I just unplugged my old hard drive and fitted the SSD and just installed windows 7 and all worked ok. But after the new install was working I was told I needed to make a change in the BIOS to alter the settings from treat Sata as IDE to treat Sata as AHCI. I did this and all was ok with the new drive the installation worked and the new drive is running ok.

But now I have since read that I should have made the bios change before installing windows nad should not be done after the install, So do I need to reinstall windows 7 with the bios changes to treat sata as AHCI before I install or will it work ok it seems to be ok but im not sure now. I was also under the impression that I could still have my old hard drive fitted and just select the hard drive I wanted to boot from as the computer started, I wanted to do this so.

I could still has access to all my old stuff if I needed it. But now my old hard drive will not boot until I change the Bios back to treat Sata as IDE, so is this not going to work or will I have to change the bios each time I need access to my old drive. Also I have an Asus P6T SE motherboard so can I plug the SSD into any Sata port or is it better to plug it into number 1 if so how do I find which one is number one.

Boot To BIOS And From External Disc But Not From Hard Drive

Oct 11, 2012

My Acer netbook has developed some kind of fault and I am unsure as to what I ought to do. The netbook does boot to BIOS and also will boot up from an external drive...but will not boot normally. I am thinking of replacing the hard drive but don't know if there could be something else wrong. It says sometimes that it can't read it and from this I am not sure if there is something else wrong. If I change the drive does it sound as though things will work? There are also a couple of other intermittent faults such as certain letters and numbers not working and then everything is fine for a while...

Hard Drive Not Detected By BIOS Or Disk Management?

Aug 27, 2011

I'm currently using a Windows 7 PC built by a friend of mine, but starting yesterday, its been acting up. The problem is there used to be two hard drives I can access, Drive B and Drive C. When I boot up the computer, BIOS only detects Drive C (if I'm not mistaken), and Disk Managements as well. I realized this when all the programs whose targets are on that drive are all broken on the desktop. So Drive B doesn't show up anywhere at all.

Lots Of BSOD / Lock Ups Or Hard Drive Not Being Detected By BIOS

Apr 13, 2012

Lots of BSOD, lock ups, hard drive not being detected by bios, is it failing? Let me start by saying my PC is custom built, most parts are only a year old. The oldest parts are the harddrive (about 5 years) and the soundcard (about 7 years). I have never had major problems until now (a year after building it).

It all started with a blue screen.
KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR
Reboot windows and it seems to start up fine, gets to the desktop and locks up.

Reboot windows and I get another blue screen.
BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO

I try to start windows from the last good configuration. Error. Registry file failure. Cannot load hive file. I try booting from the windows cd and running a chkdsk. Hard drive starts making a buzzing sound. It gets to step 3 of 5 and stops. Failed to transfer logged messages. Status 50. Now the bios rarely even "sees" the drive. When I can get it to boot and see it, any attempt at diagnostics and repairs produces errors, locks up, or fails.

Is this a bad hard drive? I would hate to spend the money on a new one only to find it is a bad mobo or virus. How can I diagnose this? If it is a bad drive I would like to save what juice is left in it and try to recover a few files before it dies. Most of the important data has been backed up but I would like to try and get a few game save files if I can. But its not a disaster if the drive data is not recoverable.

Formatting My Old XP Drive

Dec 28, 2009

I am having a problem formatting a drive. When I first built this computer, I had two 500GB HDD's installed. Originally I installed XP on the machine. Some time ago, I installed Windows 7 on my other drive. I have been using Windows 7 for months now, and I no longer wish to use Windows XP.

I am running out of space on my Windows 7 Drive, I originally only allocated 90GB to it. I want to format my XP drive so I can move things around and get more space, but I cannot reformat, disk management gives me the error, "Windows cannot format the System Partition on this disk."

I REALLY REALLY do not want to have to reinstall windows 7. I basically want to format the XP drive and make that my new media drive, and extending the current Windows 7 drive to include the space that I will gain from moving my media drive.

Formatting A Drive For W7

Jul 17, 2009

I'm currently dual-booting Vista and 7, and I want to get rid of Vista, but I'd like a couple people to just confirm for me that I'd be doing it correctly because I don't want to mess up my MBR or anything like that.

I currently have Vista on my C drive and 7 on my F drive. If I go to Computer Management and then Disk Management, this is what I see:

First, because I have a ThinkPad, I have Q and S drives. But I believe they're irrelevant to this question.

My C drive, with Vista, says it's an NTFS drive, "Healthy (Primary Partition)".

My F drive, with 7, says it's an NTFS drive, "Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Logical Drive)".

If I were to just flat-out right click on the C drive with Vista and click format, and then restart, would I be screwed? Or would it load 7 because it would be my only OS? And if this would be a problem, how should I go about removing Vista?
