i have a hard drive disk and an enclosure to try and retrieve my pics, images and documents of my old on to my new laptop, but it keeps asking to format the E: drive disk, but this would defeat the object of trying to get them back

I moved all of my files onto HD2 which is just a 1TB storage device, formatted HD1 and installed 7.
Problem is, I can't access HD2 to get all of my files.
I can see it in the BIOS, as well as on the Device Manager but it doesn't show up in Disk Management to assign it a drive letter.
It is enabled in Device Manager, I tried updating the driver and uninstalling/reinstalling and nothing has worked so far.
I need to get the data off this so formatting isn't an option.
I just did a new build and i put my 2 storage drives from my old PC in it and installed windows on a new crucial M4 ssd.When i try to open the storage drives under my computer i sometimes get a green progress bar that takes a bit to load. I tried turning indexing off, setting folder type to general n so on and the problem still occurs. I also noticed with winamp that when i click on it and scroll down and it has to load the duration of the songs winamp becomes unresponsive for a few seconds. I use PS3 Media Server to watch my video files on my TV and it also is laggy compared to before. It takes a good 10 seconds to load the list of files and takes a while to load a file when before it was instant.

Unfortunately, the only thing that I see in disk management is an 'unknown' disk. The hard drive is listed by manufacturer in the device manager; however, I am not able to open it from this site. The maxtor drive was working fine uptil I decided that I wanted only myself to be able to access it only. The drive appeared as my K drive. I went to sharing and added myself as read/write access and removed the everyone share thinking that only I would be able to use the drive. I restarted my PC and now nobody can access it. The main on has windows 7 32 bit installed plus several programs. The new computer will have windows 7 64bit. Is it possible to install the old hard drive and access all the programs and files on it even though it has an operating system on it? Can I just transfer all those programs and files from the old one and reformat it to free space or is there a way to just remove the operation system and still access the the files and programs?
View 1 Replies View RelatedThis morning while i was watching a movie from my Toshiba 500GB external hard drive, there was a windows update going. Because of the lagging due to the update and all, I restarted it after the update is done while my ext. HD is still connected to the computer.
After restarting, somehow I can't seem to access my ext. HD even though the HD is detected. The HD somehow became a "Local Disk K:" and everytime i try clicking it a pop-up telling me that "K is not accessible. The parameter is incorrect".
I googled the problem and found one solution that told me to run a CHKDSK on the command prompt. I ran a "chkdsk /r K:" but then got stuck on the "stage 3 of 5" where the chkdsk is verifying Usn journal. This has been going on for 5 hours and the cursors still blinking.
I can access my HD again? Does the verifying Usn journal really do take this long?
I'm using Windows 7 and I have four hard drives in my computer labeled C, E, F and G. A few days ago I got a BSOD and my computer wouldn't start up after that. I've been having a few problems with the C drive lately so I bought a replacement and restored from my Acronis TrueImage 2010 backup. That went fine and my computer now works as it did before with my F and G drives connected, but not my E drive. If I try to start up with my E drive connected my computer just gets stuck on the "Starting Windows" screen. If I look at my BIOS settings with it connected it is not listed. It's a pretty new drive and I've never had any problems with it before. Please can someone tell me how I can start using it again?

I just partitioned my external 3.0Tb hard drive using the device manager in Win 7. At first I had one partition of around 2.8Tb, I shrunk the existing partition to around 1.9Tb and then Windows created 3 partitions instead of 2. I ended up with 1 partition of 1.9Tb, 1 partition unallocated of around 100Gb and a 3rd partition of 746Gb unallocated. I was then able to create a simple volume on the 100Gb partition which left me with the 746Gb partition unallocated. When I try to format the 746Gb partition all the options are greyed out - I cannot create a simple volume or delete the partition. I also cannot extend my other 2 partitions to use the unallocated space. When I delete the 100Gb partition I can then extend the 1.9Tb partition and end up with a 2Tb partition and the remaining 746Gb unallocated. Is there any way to recover the 746Gb of unallocated space? Seems a waste to have a 3Tb drive that only has 2Tb of useable space.
