Floppy Disk Fail 40?
Mar 6, 2011
When booting upduring POST, I get a "floppy drive fail (40)" error code. I have to use F1 to get to the desk top. I do not have a floppy drive! I have replaced the cmos battery on the mother board. When I access floppy drive in the removable device priority menu, click, nothing! I get no sub-menu to disable it.

I have purchased and installed Win7 on a New (2 months old) PC that has a New floppy drive. The first time I used the drive I inserted a disk and opened it up to see what was on it. Explorer showed files and allowed me to open one for viewing. I then deleted all files from the disk and attempted to copy other files to the disk at which time I got a device not readable/disk not formatted. I attempted to format the disk numerous times with no luck. I used another PC (WinXP) to check/format the disk and again put the disk into the Win7 PC and opened it - showed disk empty (Good). I then copied some files to the disk, they did copy this time, then closed all windows and reopened explorer to the F. Drv again at which time I could See and Open the files. HERE'S WHERE THINGS GET FUNKY. I close explorer window, remove the disk and reinstalled the disk, open explorer to F. Drv and now the disk is EMPTY. When I try to again copy files to the disk I get the disk not formatted - but it will not format the disk and keeps giving a bad media message (I've tried 15 disks). I figured it was the drive (HW) even though it's new so I obtained another New drive and it did the same thing. I changed cables 3 times (one cable is new) - NO CHANGE. I tried an old but good drive - NO CHANGE.
Each time I try to read a floppy disk and then try to read the same disk on my WinXP PC I'm told the disk is not formatted/corrupted file system. The disk(s) are good and work as advertised in the XP machine but not with Win7. Kicker - my USB floppy drive works very well with Win7 and no issues.

I installed a power supply and removed the floppy disk from a Dell Optiplex GX520. Now when I turn it on, it says there is no serial ATA SATA-2 nor parallel ATA, Path=0 (Pri Master.) Everything is working so I don't know what the problem is.

I have a Lenovo T500 laptop running Win 7 Pro x64. The hard drive started to fail (chkdsk showed bad sectors, S.M.A.R.T. test failed, etc.) so I got a replacement drive on warranty from Lenovo, put it in, reinstalled Win 7 and about 150 updates, restored my backed-up data, and reinstalled several applications. At some point in that tedious process, chkdsk started running on almost every reboot. I have run chkdsk /r both normally and from the Restore Environment.

I recently built a new rig and I had a problem with one stick of memory. The other stick worked alright, but I've been getting random failures. Can bad memory be inconsistent? Right now, I can't start my OS up at all. It goes straight to the Windows Repair Launcher, which fails. When it gets there, I can either find a restore point or let it 'attempt to fix' for as long as I can endure. The restore point option results in 'instruction xxx failed. memory reference xxx failed.'This leads me to believe there is a problem with the memory. But, could it be the motherboard? I played a video game for hours last night, as well as surfed the web and ran other applications. Everything was fine, until I shut down. This isn't the first time this happened. Last time, I 'fixed' it by switching the 'good' memory stick with the bad. The bad resulted in getting the OS up, but lots of BSOD's

Since early August all my Security updates have been failing. It adds time to each boot up period as it goes through the updates and then at the end will say it's failed and is reverting all the changes. I have already done some research on this issue and ran "sfc/scannow" as well as "chkdsk/f/r." Both seemed to go through with no problems. After that I did a Windows update and 12 updates seemed to go through with no problem until the required reboot where we're back to the same issue of failing and reverting.

I've got a floppy drive A: installed on my computer, but of-course, i don't have no floppy drive, how do i get rid of this problem (im using windows 7 RC).
Answer:-
Go into your BIOS and set it to disable the floppy controller. The BIOS will tell Windows (any version of Windows) that a floppy drive is present, even if none is hooked up, if the floppy controller is enabled.

I'm trying to run a game from a floppy disk that I used on Windows 95 on Windows 7. But I get an error message saying its not compatible with my version of windows. Any ideas on how I can make it work?
Answer:-
Set up a virtual machine of Windows 98 (preferably 98 SE) using something like VirtualBox (ensure you have a copy of Windows 98 handy as well...). Install and play from there.

If your not going to use a Floppy Drive in your Computer you can disable it and ger rid of the Floppy Drive icon that sits in my computer.
Right click on my computer and select properties. In the hardware tab select 'Device Manager'. In the device manager there should be an expandable menu labelled 'Floppy disk controllers', expand this and you should see something like 'Standard floppy disk controller' right click on this and click disable. If at some time you do need to use a Floppy Drive you can re-able it.

Has anyone else had trouble using a USB floppy drive in Windows 7? The drive does not appear in My Computer, I have tried troubleshooting the device, uninstalling it and re-installing it and trying to install other drivers to resolve the issue (windows will not accept others as it already has the best driver apparently...). I'm at a loss now I have even tried using drivermax to correct the problem but even that does not recognise the device. To ensure it wasn't an issue with the Floppy drive itself I have even tried using another, with the same result.

I recently bought a new power pack for my Dell Dimension 5100 and after installing I got a message saying floppy diskette seek failure. I googled it and as suggested disabled it in the bios and SORTED.However yesterday i was installing a new wireless dongle and it crashed and I had to shut down. I have since got a variety of messages relating to files includinf "NTFS" and "PCI" so I want to do a repair of the Windows XP Home OS. However I cant install the CD because the drive isnt working. I had a look inside (because I am pretty sure the drive worked fine before the new PSU) and I am sure that all the wires are in right. When the computer is on the CD drive opens up and closes but is not actually recognised. Also, I have tried several other working CD drives but to no avail (presumably because they have to be installed right?).

for some unknown reason my Floppy drive runs very, very slow on 64bit Windows 7. Takes about a minute to open an office XL file, and longer to close it... a lot longer. Even after the file is closed, the floppy light is still on an clicking, like it's reading the disc still. The drive itself is OK. I've got XP Pro on the same PC and the floppy is like lightning on XP. Also tried updating drivers, but it says it's got the best drivers available, and that it's working OK. So what the heck is it?
