Running A DOS Game From Floppy Disks?
Feb 16, 2012
I've got Silent Service 2 on 2x floppy disks. The problem I have is when I load the disks into the drive, it tells me nothing is there and to format the disks??I've tried to find a way round this, but keep getting sent to DOS Box. Is there anyway to get the game onto the Hard Drive and run the game without DOS Box??

I'm trying to run a game from a floppy disk that I used on Windows 95 on Windows 7. But I get an error message saying its not compatible with my version of windows. Any ideas on how I can make it work?
Answer:-
Set up a virtual machine of Windows 98 (preferably 98 SE) using something like VirtualBox (ensure you have a copy of Windows 98 handy as well...). Install and play from there.

my dvd drive wont read any disks, im running windows 7 64 bit, i have tried the options below but still no luck i have had a search on here and tried this to fix it:
- execute regedit
- search the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlClass{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
- delete Upperfilter and lowerfilter entries.
- Reboot your system.

I downloaded a bunch of game torrents yesterday from The Pirate Bay, ranging from Halo to Angry Birds. Each time I open the installer for any of these games (I've tried Angry Birds:Star Wars, Portal 1, and Halo 1), Windows acts as if it's loading something, and then goes back to normal, whether I run as an administrator or not. I have Win7 64-bit, 6 GB RAM, DirectX 11, an AMD Quad-Core 2.4GHz athlon II x4 610e processor, and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series graphics card. I also used Steam to run Portal:First Slice, a free demo, and it ran fine. The only problem I can think of is that they aren't the Windows 7 versions? I can't imagine that would be a problem, though. Not sure which route would be the best to most effectively optimize my PC for gaming, so any suggestions are welcome. Keep in mind I'm on a Dell All-In-One PC, so components upgrades/additions might be a bit complicated. I plan on taking the games to school on a flash drive so I can try them during my computers class on the systems there.

I'm having trouble with several games opening their pre-game menus properly but then disappearing. They are running in the background but can only be seen in task manager and do not appear on the task bar. I have had this problem with multiple different games from different publishers so I'm assuming it is an error on my end. The games I have tried are Starcraft 2, Half-life, and a multitude of Steam games. I have a self-built computer running Windows 7. I'll list specs below

I'm having this strange noise every time I'm 10 minutes into a game (Stalker COP) and I noticed that when I'm using a VGA analogue cable my display starts to tremble, the noise won't stop until I turn off my pc for 15-20 minutes. It is constant it varies when a game hangs or if I change my screen resolution, I'm sure it's not my monitor, fans, HDDs, ODD, graphics cards (restarted my pc without them and the noise is still there), I stressed my CPU with prime95 and all went good.As far as I can tell there's no strange smells, I checked most of my MOBO caps, nothing bad.Tried a BIOS update, Forceware update...no luck.

I'm very tired of seeing this message booting me to desktop just to ask me if I want to change the color scheme because it perceives my computer is running slow. Load up Batman AC? 10 minutes in focus changes from said full-screen app to this completely unnecessary 'warning'. Battlefield 3? Same thing. Assassin's Creed? Same thing. Skyrim? Same thing.... I don't need Windows to tell me that my resources are being used when I know they are being used. Am I really going to have to go into Properties and Compatibility mode for every game I play? I have clicked that button so many times yet it continues to show! It specifically says "Keep the current color scheme and don't show this message again" Yet even after clicking said button it still shows...

I've got a floppy drive A: installed on my computer, but of-course, i don't have no floppy drive, how do i get rid of this problem (im using windows 7 RC).
Answer:-
Go into your BIOS and set it to disable the floppy controller. The BIOS will tell Windows (any version of Windows) that a floppy drive is present, even if none is hooked up, if the floppy controller is enabled.

If your not going to use a Floppy Drive in your Computer you can disable it and ger rid of the Floppy Drive icon that sits in my computer.
Right click on my computer and select properties. In the hardware tab select 'Device Manager'. In the device manager there should be an expandable menu labelled 'Floppy disk controllers', expand this and you should see something like 'Standard floppy disk controller' right click on this and click disable. If at some time you do need to use a Floppy Drive you can re-able it.

When I install a game in Windows 7 and Windows recognizes it it dumps the game's shortcut in the Game folder of the Start Menu. That wouldn't be a problem except Windows 7 prevents the game from creating the shortcuts it would have created had the operating system not been Windows 7- things like the game's Read Me, Uninstaller & Configuration options.

When i connected it to other computer it not worked and then when i connected it to my PC again it's not working. When i connect floppy it says nothing. I tried to update disk drivers with Computer Management and it says that my drivers are up to date. I tried to uninstall drivers and than install it again and that's not working. BIOS and Computer Management can see the floppy drive, but Win Explorer can't see floppy. What should i do to access my floppy and my files?

I have purchased and installed Win7 on a New (2 months old) PC that has a New floppy drive. The first time I used the drive I inserted a disk and opened it up to see what was on it. Explorer showed files and allowed me to open one for viewing. I then deleted all files from the disk and attempted to copy other files to the disk at which time I got a device not readable/disk not formatted. I attempted to format the disk numerous times with no luck. I used another PC (WinXP) to check/format the disk and again put the disk into the Win7 PC and opened it - showed disk empty (Good). I then copied some files to the disk, they did copy this time, then closed all windows and reopened explorer to the F. Drv again at which time I could See and Open the files. HERE'S WHERE THINGS GET FUNKY. I close explorer window, remove the disk and reinstalled the disk, open explorer to F. Drv and now the disk is EMPTY. When I try to again copy files to the disk I get the disk not formatted - but it will not format the disk and keeps giving a bad media message (I've tried 15 disks). I figured it was the drive (HW) even though it's new so I obtained another New drive and it did the same thing. I changed cables 3 times (one cable is new) - NO CHANGE. I tried an old but good drive - NO CHANGE.
Each time I try to read a floppy disk and then try to read the same disk on my WinXP PC I'm told the disk is not formatted/corrupted file system. The disk(s) are good and work as advertised in the XP machine but not with Win7. Kicker - my USB floppy drive works very well with Win7 and no issues.

Has anyone else had trouble using a USB floppy drive in Windows 7? The drive does not appear in My Computer, I have tried troubleshooting the device, uninstalling it and re-installing it and trying to install other drivers to resolve the issue (windows will not accept others as it already has the best driver apparently...). I'm at a loss now I have even tried using drivermax to correct the problem but even that does not recognise the device. To ensure it wasn't an issue with the Floppy drive itself I have even tried using another, with the same result.

I recently bought a new power pack for my Dell Dimension 5100 and after installing I got a message saying floppy diskette seek failure. I googled it and as suggested disabled it in the bios and SORTED.However yesterday i was installing a new wireless dongle and it crashed and I had to shut down. I have since got a variety of messages relating to files includinf "NTFS" and "PCI" so I want to do a repair of the Windows XP Home OS. However I cant install the CD because the drive isnt working. I had a look inside (because I am pretty sure the drive worked fine before the new PSU) and I am sure that all the wires are in right. When the computer is on the CD drive opens up and closes but is not actually recognised. Also, I have tried several other working CD drives but to no avail (presumably because they have to be installed right?).
