Files Disappeared On External HDD, Chkdsk?

Dec 30, 2011

I was listening to music from my external hard disk, when the music stopped and i got an error. When I tried to restart music, all my folders on my external had disappeared, but the space required for all those files was still "used".I don't know why... maybe because I remembered something about it... i ran chkdsk /r and it found a lot of errors and then it wrote 105684709 KB in 9719 recovered files. Now it's checking for available space. What I'd like to know is: did I make an error running it? Will it put all files into some strange un-readable archive?

Can't Run CHKDSK On External HDD

Feb 19, 2012

I am trying to run CHKDSK on an external drive that appears to have some bad sectors. I get the standard "Access denied as you do not have sufficient privileges. You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode." error. Elsewhere in this forum are similar complaints that tell me I must run the CHKDSK command as Administrator and get a command prompt that reads "C:Windowssystem32>" instead of "C:UsersAdministration>". Well by running the cmd.exe command as Administrator I finally got the recommended command prompt (the "elevated" command prompt some are calling it).

Can't Access External Hard Drive And Error On CHKDSK

Nov 17, 2012

This morning while i was watching a movie from my Toshiba 500GB external hard drive, there was a windows update going. Because of the lagging due to the update and all, I restarted it after the update is done while my ext. HD is still connected to the computer.

After restarting, somehow I can't seem to access my ext. HD even though the HD is detected. The HD somehow became a "Local Disk K:" and everytime i try clicking it a pop-up telling me that "K is not accessible. The parameter is incorrect".

I googled the problem and found one solution that told me to run a CHKDSK on the command prompt. I ran a "chkdsk /r K:" but then got stuck on the "stage 3 of 5" where the chkdsk is verifying Usn journal. This has been going on for 5 hours and the cursors still blinking.

I can access my HD again? Does the verifying Usn journal really do take this long?

External Hard Drive - Raw File System / Chkdsk Cannot Run

Aug 15, 2010

I am having issues with my external hard drive. It has been working just fine until today. The drive is showing up and I can access a few folders and fewer files, but the majority of the contents are nowhere to be found. It works without a hitch on every other computer in the house but the main one. Running chkdsk says the drive has a RAW file system and chkdsk can't run. This pc is running Windows 7 32-bit (all the others have Windows 7 64-bit) but no idea why I'm having this issue. Yesterday I installed a new printer, did some windows updates, and had a power outage, so I suspect the problem lies with one of those things. I'm really at a loss here as what to do though.

How To Recover Chkdsk Saved Files

Feb 28, 2012

chkdsk ran on a FAT32 SD card. It recovered two directories and several files which it put into files. How can I recover them?

The two directories it saved are in files with the same name as the directories used to be (i.e., "Masterpiece_Mystery_Zen_Ratking_720p_20110731_TTL", "Phantom"). Directory Phantom had several subdirectories.

The files saved are named FILE0000.CHK, FILE0001.CHK, ... FILE0045.CHK. They were all put into a directory called FOUND.000.

Is there any way to recover these files?

CHKDSK Deleting System Files?

Nov 14, 2012

I recently built a windows 7 computer and It has been running great. However, about a fortnight ago my computer ran CHKDSK, said that it has deleted some files and now I can't get past the windows loading screen even in safe mode. Startup repair didn't help and the installation CD didn't recognise the OS thus not allowing me to go into repair mode. I reinstalled the OS, but just today it has happened again.

My specs are below

Core i5 3470
Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3V
AMD radeon HD 7850
8gb Ram
1TB Seagate Barracuda
500W CoolerMaster PSU

Backup Folder Simply Disappeared From External Hard Drive

Nov 16, 2011

Last week I've reinstalled my Windows 7 because my notebook was slow and I wanted to went back to the factory setting. I've picked my Seagate external HD (2TB) and moved everything I had into a folder called "[Acer]".

Well, I had some problems with external hard drives this year, I've lost many information from an external HD, and I found out that it was because I've connected this HD in a Macintosh. I really DON'T KNOW WHY, but every folder that I had opened in my Macintosh went CORRUPTED in Windows 7, with no chances to repair the files.

Since then, I haven't plugged my external hard drives into my Macintosh.

I don't know if it's a Windows 7 problem or a problem with my Seagate HD, but the quantity of issues that I had with this external HD since then was crazy. Every time I disconnected this HD and then connected again, Windows asked me to repair and scan the files. And the amount of time to scan everything was, like, one and a half hour... so it was bugging me a lot. But the real problem is: yesterday I've plugged my external HD and my backup folder (called "[Acer]" simply disappeared from the drive. I've tried to run "chkdsk E: /F", with no success.

Now I'm running a "chkdsk E: /R", and it will take me a lot of time, and I'm really not positive to recover my backup folder.

All the old folders are there, everything is fine, but this folder disappeared, only this folder (and everything that were inside of it) disappeared.

I've also tried Recuva (Recuva - Download) to recover my folder, but it haven't found it.

Chkdsk Deleted Orphan Files Now Factory WebCam Does Not Work

Jun 21, 2012

I have a 1yr old Asus g74sx laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. The other day with no warning the ntfs chkdsk appeared on startup and I did not cancel it... BIG mistake. I saw it deleting several files and once my laptop started up my built in web cam is no longer working, nor is the power option(battery icon) or wireless strength meter available in the taskbar either. The built in web camera shows the driver is installed and is working appropriately in the device manager list, but when you attempt to open it with other programs they all say something like "This device can't be found or is in use by another program". I thought I would try to install an external webcam by logitech, but it does the same as well. What can I do to restore this? There is no program that I can see in the application list that has control of it and I do believe obviously chkdsk did something by deleting VERY important files. As another note I have tried to fix the battery icon through all the suggested ways, but it still remains "greyed out" when I try to turn it on in the control panel section.

I DO NOT want to do a recovery with the Geek Squad discs.I did run a Seagate software utility to do a full scan of sectors on my hard drive and it found zero problems so I don't understand yet why the chkdsk did what it did.

Users Files Folder Disappeared

Feb 10, 2013

While I was searching for something, my C:/users folder disappeared. So my desktop lost all its folders and some icons and shortcuts. And of course I had no 'Documents' folder, etc.I then discovered that I had no System Restore points (I've created some now).I finally managed to work out that somehow 'show hidden filles and folders' had been un-ticked.So I ticked that option, and now all the missing items are back - but they're all 'pale' and all the icons within those folders are 'pale' as well. What does this mean? I can open the files and folders.

Folders, Files Disappeared From Desktop

May 14, 2011

I was attempting to backup my system to an external drive, interrupted it, then all the files I saved on my desktop were gone. I can't find them through the start menu search nor are they in the recycle bin. I tried to restore the system to an earlier save, no dice.

1. are the files gone?

2. what happened?

3. is it a bad idea to save files to the desktop? It looked like that is where windows places my documents by default? Is it dangerous to just create C://documents for a computer with one user?

Folders & Files Have Suddenly Disappeared

Dec 6, 2012

I'm using several internal hard drives with my computer, one of which is 1.5Tb in size (on a single partition). On this HD I store a number of multi-media files, which I've sorted/placed in specific "main" folders (Audio files - Picture files - Video files - etc.), and within each of these main folders are a number of other folders where the contents (pictures, etc), are sorted/filed for easier access. This evening I noticed that all the files (several years of pictures), which were within a main folder labeled "Pictures", have disappeared (they were there a few hours before)!! T he main folder was still there, but now shows as being empty, but all the sub-folders and their contents have suddenly disappeared. Everything else on the hard drive is still where it should be.I checked the main recycle bin on C drive, but the files weren't there (there was one photo there which I deleted yesterday. I did a "restore" for it and it left the recycle bin but didn't show up where it came from - the HD where the other pictures have gone missing from - or, as far as I can see, anywhere else).

I also checked the recycle bin on the actual hard drive where this mystery occurred and discovered one "folder" containing almost 5Gb of something - - I can't open it. A check in properties shows this folder to be marked as "hidden" and the box is shaded out, i.e., blocked to prevent being changed. The box immediately above the hidden box (Read-only), isn't checked - but, instead of being blank, it's blue (and if I click it the blue is replaced by a blank box)!!I've read in this forum of some similar experiences - but usually they're program files on C drive that have disappeared and not actual "stored" files on another HD, so I wasn't able to receive any help from them - - except to be comforted in the strong possibility that the files are still there, they've just been hidden by windows (7 Ultimate, 64bit).I also contacted a company (BitMart) who's product (Restorer 2000 Pro), I purchased several years ago. I'm told that my product does not support either W-7 or 64 bit but their newest version does - - however, there's no guarantee that a recovery can be made if the files haven't been deleted from the drive and are only in a hidden state.

Deleted Duplicated Icons - All Files And Folders Disappeared From Desktop

I even had two icons for the recycle bin! I started moving one of each of the duplicated files and folders into one of the duplicated recycle bins.

I rearranged the files and folders. I then emptied one of the recycle bins. I then clicked on the desktop to rearrange the files and folders. Suddenly almost everything else on my desktop disappeared! There were many files and folder on the desktop that are now gone, there are only 7 files and folders left. Find "found" Files Created By CHKDSK?

Dec 17, 2011

I had some trouble with one of my harddisks, after I connected it via a USB hub. When I disconnected it and put it back in later on, checkdisk told me I had a corrupted file and proposed a scan. After scanning, it told me that it had created a found file somewhere. I didnt find it, but since nothing was missing, I didnt think about it any further. A couple of days later, the same thing happened again, but this time most of my files were gone. I searched everywhere for the "found"files, but there are nowhere to be seen.

Files Corrupted In External USB HD?

Jul 6, 2011

I've moved tons of files to an external hard drive [Samsung external USB HD (FAT32)]. After that, I've tried to eject the device in Windows 7, via Safely Remove Hardware but Windows said that the device was in use, even though everything (applications and windows) were closed. I decided to use USB Safely Remove software to eject my portable HD. I really don't know if that was the problem, but since then I found a lot of folders inside my external HD corrupted.

In the corrupted folders, JPG files looks like this. I can't read the other files (PDFs and PSD) in those folders, Adobe Reader and Photoshop says that the file is damaged. I've tried Windows 7 error-checking but the files are still corrupted.

Files In External USB HDD Are Not Being Shown

May 13, 2012

I have a Western Digital 1 TB External USB HDD.I have used it for some time. One day, I was copying files from my laptop to the USB HDD.It was taking for ever. So, I tries to cancel it. It wouldn't cancel. So, I disconnected the USB HDD by pulling the USB chord. From that day, it is not working. When I connect it will show it as a local-disk, but not show any details like size or name of the drive. It takes forever to open right-click menu and properties. Disk Manager takes for ever to show the list of drives. If I double-click on the drive, my whole system becomes slow and windows explorer hangs. If I restart my system in Safe mode, it will show the drive in Disk Manager as RAW and it gives me an option to format. Is there a way to recover the data and the HDD.

Files From External Drive

Jun 7, 2012

When you open a file (document, audio, photo, etc.) from an external drive (such as a USB drive or external disk drive), do any remnants of that file remain on the hard drive of the computer on which you opened it? I am mainly concerned with Windows based systems.I ask this because I am borrowing a laptop from a friend and some of the files on a USB drive are personal documents and family photos which I would prefer not to leave behind.I know document names will remain in recent documents on some versions of Windows and that's fine, but is there an actual copy of a file kept temporarily on a hard drive on any Windows version? The machine I am using has Windows 7 32-bit on it.

I took the internal HD out of the Xp machine and put it in a docking station to USB and it shows up as Drive K on the windows 7 machine. I wanted to drag and drop some files from it, but can't find most of them! What is odd, is most files aren't showing - no music files, no doc files - the drive seems to be working/reading ok. I also noticed there are no individual user accounts. I've turned on "show all hidden files" and I"ve given ownership of the whole K drive and folders to everyone and my username, but no files show. The drive shows it is almost full, so SOMETHING is on there.
