CHKDSK Deleting System Files?
Nov 14, 2012
I recently built a windows 7 computer and It has been running great. However, about a fortnight ago my computer ran CHKDSK, said that it has deleted some files and now I can't get past the windows loading screen even in safe mode. Startup repair didn't help and the installation CD didn't recognise the OS thus not allowing me to go into repair mode. I reinstalled the OS, but just today it has happened again.
My specs are below
Core i5 3470
Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3V
AMD radeon HD 7850
8gb Ram
1TB Seagate Barracuda
500W CoolerMaster PSU

Laptop got a little sluggish and some programs (Firefox, Waterfox, Handbrake etc) were crashing all the time. Uninstallation using Revo Uninstaller and reinstallation didn't seem to solve the problems. So had to restore the system to previous restore point which restored to the OS+updates to that day+ a few essential programs.
Now I am left with the system where there are no programs but settings are still there, so when I am installing the programs, it takes these settings to run. I was wondering how do I delete these settings?

I was listening to music from my external hard disk, when the music stopped and i got an error. When I tried to restart music, all my folders on my external had disappeared, but the space required for all those files was still "used".I don't know why... maybe because I remembered something about it... i ran chkdsk /r and it found a lot of errors and then it wrote 105684709 KB in 9719 recovered files. Now it's checking for available space. What I'd like to know is: did I make an error running it? Will it put all files into some strange un-readable archive?

chkdsk ran on a FAT32 SD card. It recovered two directories and several files which it put into files. How can I recover them?
The two directories it saved are in files with the same name as the directories used to be (i.e., "Masterpiece_Mystery_Zen_Ratking_720p_20110731_TTL", "Phantom"). Directory Phantom had several subdirectories.
The files saved are named FILE0000.CHK, FILE0001.CHK, ... FILE0045.CHK. They were all put into a directory called FOUND.000.
Is there any way to recover these files?

i had multiple systems (3) on my computer but mainly 1 i use everyday, so i formated the two partitions with the systems i dont need after a reeboot (like i ecpected) i had a bootmbr missing error. So i went and tryed using the repair function of the dvd but that dident work. So i installed a complete new system on one of the new partitions (i left the old one allown), after i installed the new system i booted up and installed easy bcd and added my old partition to my boot manager, but after i boot up I can see the boot menu and select the old system i want to start up from but it brings an error and tells me to enter the dvd and repair the system. I am so lost on this. why istent it just taking the files and booting? what did i do wrong

I want to check my hard drive for errors, and go through: C/Properties/Tools/ Error Checking/Check Now , etc., but when I do this, I am told that I have to restart my system before it will run. But when I either simply Restart, or Shut Down then restart, the CHKDSK does not run. I am using Windows 7 Home Premium.

I want to create a system image on my NTFS formatted portable WesternD HDD. Now It has about 250GB of space left(the portable HDD), and the Laptop PC that i want to create the image of, tells me I need about 199GB for the system image. Then first time I created the image, it gave me a failure message saying I should run a CHKDSK /R and ty again. I ran a CHKDSK /R on the external drive and tried making a system image again, where it got about halfway and gave me the same message. What is going wrong every time?

I am having issues with my external hard drive. It has been working just fine until today. The drive is showing up and I can access a few folders and fewer files, but the majority of the contents are nowhere to be found. It works without a hitch on every other computer in the house but the main one. Running chkdsk says the drive has a RAW file system and chkdsk can't run. This pc is running Windows 7 32-bit (all the others have Windows 7 64-bit) but no idea why I'm having this issue. Yesterday I installed a new printer, did some windows updates, and had a power outage, so I suspect the problem lies with one of those things. I'm really at a loss here as what to do though.

I have a 1yr old Asus g74sx laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. The other day with no warning the ntfs chkdsk appeared on startup and I did not cancel it... BIG mistake. I saw it deleting several files and once my laptop started up my built in web cam is no longer working, nor is the power option(battery icon) or wireless strength meter available in the taskbar either. The built in web camera shows the driver is installed and is working appropriately in the device manager list, but when you attempt to open it with other programs they all say something like "This device can't be found or is in use by another program". I thought I would try to install an external webcam by logitech, but it does the same as well. What can I do to restore this? There is no program that I can see in the application list that has control of it and I do believe obviously chkdsk did something by deleting VERY important files. As another note I have tried to fix the battery icon through all the suggested ways, but it still remains "greyed out" when I try to turn it on in the control panel section.
I DO NOT want to do a recovery with the Geek Squad discs.I did run a Seagate software utility to do a full scan of sectors on my hard drive and it found zero problems so I don't understand yet why the chkdsk did what it did.

I was wondering if there is an option/program that you can use, to get rid of ALL the files that you haven't used for 1/2/3/4 months or more?I'd like to get rid of all theunnecessary/junk files that possibly hung on even after I uninstalled the software etc.Since I don't remember everything I've ever installed I would just like to get rid of everything on my pc that hasn't been used in let's say 2-3 months. I am using Win7 Ultimately hope I was able to communicate my issue correctly as English isn't my first language)I did do all I can manually, but you see my PC has 60GB on the (C) drive and it's currently using 50. I do have (D) and (E) which both have a terabyte each, but I would still like to get to the bottom of why (C) is so full even after I have cleaned out pretty much everything that isn't essential.

If I installed a program like Lotus Notes on a 64-bit version of Windows 7 and then discovered that the program didnt function the way I need it to and then restored the computer back to a point before the installation, would it be okay to delete the Lotus Notes folder that was created in the AppDataLocal folder since those files wont be used anymore?

how to "delete" unwanted files on DVD Writable disks. Do I need another piece of software to do that or WIN 7 can do it.
Today, I took out an old DVD disk that had files written on it previously by NERO in XP, and added files to it. That was OK. But then, I need to replace one of the files, so I went and delete it, but I can find anyway to delete the file, now can I add any more files to the DVD it seems.
I went back to XP and use NERO on the same disk, deleted the file, replace it with new one, and all are fine.

I have literally many hundreds of .png files that serve no apparent function other than clutter. When I try to delete them the message is, "You require permission from "TrustedInstaller" to make changes to this file". "Unlocker" can delete these files but only one at a time. Is there software out there that can delete a bunch at a time?

My windows keeps deleting files with an .lz extension right after they are downloaded to there . It deletes them for ABSOLUTELY no reason . The antivirus doesn't scream , nor the folder and files are in C: or in a system folder. The folder is mine and those files are needed for a game , so every time i start the game it downloads them again and again. I Observe how they comeup in the directory , and right after they are downloaded , windows deletes them (they dissapear).

Since upgrading to win 7 64bit I've had a problem where the odd file wont deleteIt's not saying its in use by the system or anything like that... it just wont delete, be renamed, or be moved.I can only think of one example right now, and that's a WAV file.I buy music online in WAV format for mixingI put them all in a folder called "new choons" at which point I run Mixed In Key on them to get their KEY - it renames the files to include the Key at the end of the file nameFrom there I put it in their appropriate genre folders in my WAV folder, leaving the new choons folder clear.I have even tried deleting or renaming the new choons folder but it wont do it.any time I open the folder indexing tries to run on it foreve

What I describe below doesn't always happen but it does lots of times: Let's say I delete a folder, it will tell me that access is denied, a program is using it, to solve that, I have to open another folder, or click on an image, then go back to the folder I want to delete, and delete it.
Renaming (this is all over the network) here's what I do:
1. Open randomly named folder to check content.
2. Go back up one folder level to rename the folder according to content.
3. Error! Folder is in use by another program (not specified), please try again
4. Try opening another folder and then going back again to rename originally wanted folder... sometimes it works.
5. Wait 5-10 minutes before renaming.
I just tried to rename a folder without even going into the folder....Error!! "The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program. Close the folder or file and try again."

I don't know why Microsoft made this so difficult in Windows 7 / Server 2008..I use the Windows Advanced search to find files containing a certain word, it pulls up a list of results... I can "select all" and I can do things like copy them to another location, but I CAN'T find a way to delete these files!!If I click the DELETE key while they are all selected, nothing happens. It's not allowing me to drag the files into the Recycle Bin.Am I missing something here? It seems that all options that are normally available when right-clicking on file(s) are present in the right-click menu (open with, send to, create shortcut, etc) EXCEPT for cut or delete.

When I try to delete a file, either by choosing the "delete" option on the context menu or by pressing the "delete" key with the file selected, it take between something like 20 to 60 seconds to show me the usual confirmation window (the one with "Are you sure you want to delete file XXX.X?"). It's quite annoying, however it seems that that is the only problem. When the confirmation windows does come up the file can be deleted OK and I can drag and drop files to the recycling bin without any problems.

I have an old 7 installation that I'm having difficulties exterminating. I want to delete: Windows, Program Files, Program Files (x86). I am aware this is not advisable etc etc, but that advice is inapplicable here because the installation is now on a data disk. I've tried some command line stuff with "takeown" and tried giving full permissions, but it is remarkably stubborn. Everything I did partially worked, but ultimately failed to get the job done.

I run a software tool that often generates 75,000 - 100,000 small files that need to be deleted after the software exits. Right now, it can take 8 - 10 minutes to permanently delete all these files from a single run, and I usually have 4 - 8 runs to deal with, so do the math. I have tried shift-del to permanently delete but it doesn't work - Windows still copies everything to the recycle bin. Also, while moving the files to the recycle bin, I often get an error message: "Error 0x80070050: The file exists." Bottom line is that it takes a *really* long time just to delete these files and I need a quicker way to do it.
