I have a newish PC with an crucial ssd on C: and a WDC Black on D: but for some reason when I open some directories in explorer on D: it takes ages to display the contents, upto 30secs in some cases. And thats for a directory with only 150 items. I can see the green bar in the address bar filling up whilst I`m waiting for it to display
View 8 RepliesI just got a new PC with Windows 7 installed and have run into this issue twice, both times with a particular folder - let's call it "UsefulDocuments2" (the actual folder name DOES have a 2 at the end, but there is no folder called "UsefulDocuments").
Sometimes, when I try to view the folder contents using Explorer or through Windows Live Mail (in an attempt to include a file in the folder as an attachment), I can't view the contents of the folder. When I access the folder, it has the proper path listed in the address bar of the window and displays the number of items (171) in the lower left corner. However, the status bar just says "Searching for items..." except I can occasionally see it flicker to say "171 items."
While it is "Searching for items..." (which is 99.9% of the time), it doesn't display any of the contents of the folder. The scrollbar on the side of the window constantly flickers - it's recognizing that there are 171 items in the folder and that the scrollbar is necessary, but then keeps re-searching the folder contents, I guess.
Weirdly, if I change the folder name to, say, "UsefulDocuments" it works fine (at least right now). If I then change it back to "UsefulDocuments2" it reverts to its old behavior. Also, if I open a file in it in Word (2010), I can view and access the contents of the folder without any problem at all.
Obviously, I can just change the folder name, but don't really want to for organizational reasons, and also am just curious as to what's going on and how to fix it should it happen to other folders, etc.
In windows 7 using windows explorer the up and down arrow keys do not work to display the contents of file folders. The arrow keys move the focus to the next folder in the left hand window but does not display its contents in the right hand window. Using XP and all previous versions of windows (after the introduction of the mouse) this was possible.Is this just my installation or has this feature been removed like the "remember each folder's view settings"?I have a large database in Access and the folder tree that it accesses is huge. Using the arrows instead of the mouse saves time and is bore ergonomically friendly to my hand.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just upgraded from Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional to take advantage of Virtual PC but I notice that when using the new W7 professional, there is a lot of web content missing from the display when browsing. e.g on the Yahoo home page, only the central section is displayed, the two side sections are completely missing. Even the submit button is missing from this page! How I can see the full content of a display? (It is ok in Virtual PC running XP).

The drive works fine, ImgBurn works fine, all other programs seem to see the files on a disk fine, they just don't show up in Windows Explorer. I click on the drive in the "Navigation Pane" and nothing happens. I've tried two good DVD drives, uninstalled ImgBurn and PowerISO, still nothing.

That changes what I see in the Contents Pane. I can see the Date of the files. But, when I change to a different folder, I have to do it all over again. How can I make this change permanent?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a problem getting Media Center to display my Photos showing the individual photos contents of each folder.I am running Windows 7 HP 64 bit with all updates. My MEDIA (movies, music & photos) are on a separate hdd (M). Each of the media formats has it's own folder on the M drive, Movies, Music & Photos. I have no problem with the movies or the music. However, when I choose "pictures" in Windows Media Center only the individual photos folders are shown....no photos are shown in these folders. I see the individual folders but no contents. I have set up "Libraries" on the C: drive; Music, Video & Photos. When I click on photos in the "Libraries" all the photos folders are show each with it's own photos. I have "Shared" these libraries as well as each folder on the Media drive M. The format of the individual photos is jpg. I have run SFC/Scannow.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIf a key is pressed down for longer than 2 secs, it apparently stops working, i.e. the display halts. If I release the key, the (apparently unprinted)characters appear at once. If I hold it down long enough, it even beeps. This happens with all the keys including backspace/arrow keys making my browsing experience miserable. (i.e hitting backspace on google box, the deletion seems to stop abruptly. But when I release it, I see multiple characters deleted at once)
This is reproduced in Firefox/Wordpad/MS-Word (At its worst in Firefox, much better in Notepad, but still there.) I rolled back to a 1 year old backup image via CloneZilla but the problem still exists. Probably its a hardware issue? (My laptop is now about 2 yrs old, it has switchable graphics, 512mb amd raedon card). Just tried it again with headphones on, it gives me a 'drrrrr-r' sound. Its even happening now as I'm typing this at a moderately fast pace.

But when I type a website into the search bar, I can get on just fine. The other 2 users on the same computer can both click the ie icon and get on the internet right away without the error message. Expected behavior from Windows Explorer. You copy a file into a folder, you want it to automatically get into order in whatever sorting order you choose. Current behavior of my Windows Explorer, when I copy a file into a folder or if I rename a file and want Explorer to update I have to hit F5 (Actualiser (in french)). In explorer, I select the "Details" view and I add a column to see the "From" attribute. Nothing shows in this column.
I have network drives mapped on my machine (Win 7 Pro 64bit) and any time I open Explorer while not connected to my companies domain, the icons take anywhere from 15-20 seconds to fully display.
As soon as I disconnect all the drives, the icons display immediately.
The internet explorer in my laptop is too slow to open. I was browsing the google and came across this site. I have MacFee installed on my lappy. Ran it and found no issues. Downloaded Hijackthis as recommended by this forum admin and here is the log file.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhenever my display turns off, all my windows in explorer closes even when I am moving files. I don't really know how this happened but it is very annoying. Also, my windows explorer crashes like 5 times a day. It says that windows explorer is not responding and I have to wait for it to refresh but there are also times when I can't open it anymore then I'll have to restart my computer.
I have already done a full virus scan and system file checker but there were no threats or errors found.
I can't open a specific folder to display the content with Explorer.I'm running Windows 7 7601.win7sp1_gdr.120830-0333 Home Premium. The folder is on a secondary HDD where I also have the system folders Libraries and Download. All the system and program files are on my primary SSD C: drive.What doesn't work:With my regular account, on that specific folder, I can't display the content via Explorer. I can't either get it when I try to open it from inside applications such as Notepad++, PotPlayer, Media Player Classic, VirtualDub. Things I did:I have checked Show hidden files in Folder Options.I did a Check Disk, which didn't find any error.I also ran: ATTRIB -s -h mbrp /s /d (Where mbrp contains the directory causing problem) hoping that somehow, some System Attributes could be removed.FWIW, it seems this happened as I was trying to run an Avisynth64 script with new installation of MPC-HC64.A this point, I am out of ideas. I have a very fast system with 16Gb Ram and SSD drives. However when I open a folder containing images, explorer takes ages creating the thumbnails. (Whether small/medium or large icons is selected). OK the first time, but why every subsequent time I open that folder?
If I scroll down, the thumbnails are only created when the next lot of files come into the window. If I am in Details mode, then some columns i.e. Date, take much longer to populate than others. It's as if my windows isn't caching or something?

View 2 Replies View RelatedIt was all fine until yesterday. I copied over a game from my laptop the night before (I just installed 7 on this computer recently, was copying over stuff from my laptop) and also finished installing World of Warcraft and not long after I turned off the computer.
The next day I switched it on and didn't notice anything at first but some programs wouldn't run (Winamp would have a blank space where the music list normally is).
I tried installing some virtual drive programs such as magic disc and power iso which I usually use for isos I rip onto the computer (I lost some discs before so I've been doing that recently) but the magic disc programs wouldn't run properly and power iso wouldn't progress during its installation.
I tried installing some anti spyware like AVG and Avast (Spyware doctor detected 300 odd tracking cookies that appeared in the past week I installed, way more than it did with my vista laptop) but they would just either not respond (and then pop up with a message saying it took a while and wouldn't respond) or just not even progress when it was installing (on the part where it begins putting down files)
Explorer itself is slow and takes a while to load when on "My computer" and usually wouldn't display USB drives. Once it did but it didn't actually open it up when I clicked on it and prevented the window from responding.
I have used task manager to close all these down when they wouldn't.
When I tried switching off my computer it just stayed on the logging off/shutting down screen. I tried leaving it overnight, expecting it to finally switch off but it only ende up going into sleep mode (and popped up with the log in screen when I waked it up)
I have switched the computer off and on a few times but its still the same.
I also got the disc I used to install and tried to repair it but it wouldn't boot from the disc when I switched on the PC and when I opened it up and ran the setup file, it came up with the usual "are you sure you want to run this" dialog and didn't do anything.
Anyway, for a while now I have had this problem of new tabs opening slowly. Whenever I click the new tab button, it will create the new tab, but it will not load for about 3 seconds. I have googled this issue, and have come up with things like disabling addons (I ran IE in the no-addon mode, and it still had the problem), and somebody suggested resetting IE (I did so, but to no avail).
Does anybody have some recommendations, other than switch to FF or Chrome?

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy computer shut down on Thursday sometime due to windows updates. When I came to work on Friday I was unable to log into one of my home based business work programs. I was told to uninstall Flash player and reinstall. It worked for a bit, but each time a script pulled up, it said "windows cannot display this webpage' and if I hit F5 I would get the script most of the time. On Sat, I was unable to get into IE at all, it would say DNS Server not responding.
I ran unplugged modem/router and reset it, rebooted pc and nothing worked. Sunday, I went online at DELL and ran a system checkup and everything passed, went to my program and it said Java was not installed on this pc. I uninstalled Java and reinstalled it and program still says the same thing. I did find a blog on google that said I needed Java 1.5 which will run along side the updated Java. Can't find 1.5 anywhere. I also did a system restore to Thursday and now my IE screen is blank, just a plain white screen. I need IE for my job, Google works fine.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen trying to save a file, the save dialog will not display the contents of a folder or drive in the content pane. When I click on a drive or folder in the navigation pane the content pane only displays the 'No items match your search' message. When I try to save the file in the Documents folder I get a 'The file name is not valid' message. This happens in some programs(Notepad++, Firefox, IE7) but not others(Notepad). This also happens in Firefox, Chrome and IE7 when I'm trying to upload a file to the internet(either my webserver(a Joomla CMS) or Soundcloud.com(A music sharing site).
