I wanted to create a new partition to try out linux. So I decided to shrink E: by 20 GB. I then formatted the free space into a new drive by right clicking and creating new simple volume. I was warned that the drive would be made "simple", but not knowing the implications, I went ahead with the procedure. Now on rebooting, windows won't load. I had made a repair disc, so was able to use it to check for any start up errors. It reported none. Moreover I used "diskpart" through cmd to find volume c: is dynamic.

Now, I actually have the exact same OEM disk of Windows 7 Home Premium installed. I have a sister that seems to think she owns my laptop. I have considered splitting my HDD partition into 2 so that I can have my own installation and part of the drive. The problem is that if I screw something up, my sister will have a cow (it's the only place where she stores her iTunes, etc. and she's stubborn to use anything else, she wouldn't even accept it on backup). Can I also have 2 of the same OEM copies on each partition? If not, I'm Out of luck.

I bought a new laptop with OS- DOS so what i did i bought the Windows 7 dvd and installed it. Everything was working fine then i decided to make partitions pf my HD. As i had 3 partitions c,d,e. Where i installed Windows 7 on 'c' i decided to leave it and shrink my d and e drives. Now when i first shrink my 'd' drive a message poped up regarding os with an option yes or no...... i dont know wht hapend to me as i did not read the message and hit yes since pressing no would have led to no partitions at all. now after that i made several partions that message didnt pop up again. Now when i restarted my windows it got stuck at the black screen with a blinking cursor.
1. Re-install windows i reinstalled it and when the final restart takes place b4 win launch same problem.
2. Deleting all partitions. Leting only one partition remaining.Unable to do that .... if i try to do it while installing win options.... the delete option is in active for new drives as it says " win cannot be installed in this drive".Now i am also unable to some how get into dos prompt to delete them from there...

I've got a windows partition set-up like below: 39MB (healthy EISA config) -> 14.65 GB Recovery (D) -> 43 GB (C) -> 1.95GB (no name) ->91.39GB unallocated, The partitions are set-up in that order. When I click on the 1.95 to extend it / add it to the 91.39GB, I get an error: the operation failed to complete because the disk management console view is not up to date. I've attempted to update it and restart the computer to no avail. how I can get my 43GB combined with the 1.95GB and 91.39GB partitions located to the right of it?

After saving money for quite while, i was able to finally buy a new pc, i had assembled other pc`s for my friends and never had any trouble installing windows on their systems, but now, every time i try to install windows 7 x64, the computer hangs while extracting windows files, then, after some time it prompts me with the error 0x80070002, saying that it didn`t find the required files, so i tried with many suggestions:- Updated to the latest BIOS.- Switched the RAM modules from A2 and B2 to A1 and B1 (my cpu fan was in the way so i had to buy another, and yup, i`m living on cup noodles).
- Ran memtest x86+ for 8 hours (no errors)- Ran sea tools but it didnīt detect any drives (still donīt know why, and the windows 7 installer detects the hdd just fine, also tried it on another computer and works fine)- Switched sata cables, switched sata connectors.- Switched from ahci to ide on the Bios, but it didnīt detect any drives after that, so i returned to ahci.- Disassembled all the pc and re-assembled it, re-checked every connection with every install guide 3 times- Tryied to install again, several times, with the same problem, never getting beyond the 48% extraction, mostly 12%, 9% and so on.And right now, iīm poor, un-able to work, and dangerously nearing towards un-employement (sold my previous computer to buy this one, my savings are gone, and canīt afford to get sick, a little problem called "living in Mexico"

My system is Dell Inspiron 17R SE (7720), 1 TB Hard Disk 5400 rpm + 32 GB mSATA, 8 GB RAM, 3rd Gen i7. I was trying to make a bootable USB flash drive for windows 7 from Windows 7 Home Premium Reinstall disk that came with my Dell laptop, using the WinToFlash utility. But in starting the process, the PC froze, all applications (even explorer.exe) stopped, and Alt+Ctrl+Del refused to work. I turned the laptop off and back on, where it refused to even show the OS list and showed a DRMK message instead with a command prompt C:> as:
Loading DRMK V8.00...
DRMK Version 8.00
COMMAND.COM Build 37 - Jul 28, 2008
DRMK KERNEL Build 15 - Aug 8, 2008
Copyright (c) 2006-2008 Dell Inc. All rights reserved.
C:>
I tried booting from Windows 7 reinstall DVD but none of the repair options worked. I tried reinstall and repair options but my Hard Drive did not show up. It rather asked to Load Drivers for the Hard Disk. However, it did show any of the USB drives I connected to it, along with an X: drive, which must be the recovery drive for Dell's factory restore. I tried looking for Hard Disk drivers in that but no luck.
Then I downloaded from another PC a USB utility for Seagate Hard Drives from Dell website that makes a bootable USB. I ran that utility and it showed all the test passed (But there was no firmware update during the tests). Another thing I tried was using list disk command on command prompt in Windows Repair, but It did not show any drives, not even the X: drive. It only showed the USB drives I attached to it, or the DVD drive in list volume command.
I cannot boot to windows, I cannot install new windows, I cannot repair the windows and I cannot even factory restore my laptop. The hard drive shows up in BIOS, but not in Windows Boot or Windows Installation. Is there any way I can get my Hard Disk back without losing data? I have two partitions of that drive. I don't care about formatting C: Drive (Windows) but I wanna preserve E: Drive (the one filled with personal data but no programs).

I have my HP Laptop which came with Windows Vista as the OS. I want to upgrade to Windows 7 so I bought Windows 7 from my local store.I entered the disc and did boot from CD. It reached to the page where it shows the disk partition. I deleted the partitions and created new one. However, whenever I create the partition, it creates a primary one and gives me error saying Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition.

I have Windows 7 64 bit installed on my computer but needed to install a program only compatible with 32 bit, so decided to create a new 3GB partition using the in-built feature in Windows 7 and install Windows XP on it.
I booted up XP, formatted the partition again,a nd let it run through the set up, but as soon as it had copied the files and rebooted, I got the error message 'error loading operating system'.
I really don't know how to fix this - I'm not bothered about installing XP, I can do without it, but the main thing is getting back onto Windows 7 as I have all my files there. I didn't bother making a back up as I thought any problems that could occur would be limited to the partition that I installed Win XP on.
I tried the 'start up repair' utility on the Windows 7 boot disk, and although that said it had repaired a problem, I still get the same error. Although one strange thing I've noticed is that it says that Windows 7 is located on '(E: ) Local Disk' when it was definitely installed on the D: drive - E: was the new partition of size 3GB with Win XP installed, but according to this it is 400GB + with Windows 7.

i tried to change the partition of my laptop but while in the process, i got an error. when i tried to reboot it, it already says disk error. so i tried to reinstall windows but after the "press any key to boot from cd" msg, i only get a blank screen. now i cant reformat my hard disk and cant reinstall any os on it. i even tried hiren's boot cd but i always get a blank screen after booting from it.
i cant also start the laptop on safe mode or even the last known good configuration. when i tried the safe mode, it says about the partition error (long lines of error like "partition (0)disk...system..." something. i am most certain that the cause was the erroneous or interrupted partitioning.

I have just ugraded most parts of my PC including going from 2gb of ram to 8gb. As I am currently running windows 7 home premium 32bit I believe my pc will only be reading 4gb of this ram.
I have downloaded a 64 bit installation iso file & burnt to disk, upon reinstalling I was planning on re-using my current windows product key.
Once past the custom installation option I recieve an error message along the lines of "The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks."
I belive my Hard drive has 2 partions, 1 main area for saving files & program files. It also has a factory image drive. This is the first time I have built a PC, Is frustrating to have go this far on my own and get seemingly stuck on what is hopefully the last hurdle

0x8004240F I encounter this error for the very first time and it happens when I try to make a new partition to install Windows 7 on it using Windows 7 installer (not disk management!) The harddisk has a legitimate Recovery partition of HP (which was active and primary) and another data partition. It has 40 gb of free space. Even if I select like 1 or 10 or 20 gb it still gives 0x8004240F error. I made several commands (after installing Windows 7) like bootrec /fixmbr /fixboot /rebuildbcd and they didn't detected the Win 7 I managed to install BUT I made it's partition in Acronis Disk Director suite.

I had an empty 70 GB partition on the left of my computer and a 230 GB on the right side but I wanted to combine them. Windows was on the 230 GB partition. I booted GParted and combined them, it copied everything from the 230 GB partition over and resized it, it took a few hours.I assumed after it wouldn't boot and all I would have to do is pop in my Windows 7 install disc and go through the repair setup. At first I ran startup repair and it would say it found a problem, and I rebooted and still nothing.. After the bios loads and it lists my DVD drives I just get a cursor _ blinking, nothing else.. No BOOTMGR missing.Odd I thought, so I ran repair again, and again it found another problem. I did this several times before it said it could not detect a problem but it still would do the same thing.I opened the cmd prompt and issued the following commands
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildocd
I tried installing a second copy of Windows 7 on a 10 GB partition on the end, it went successfully but still blinking cursor. Theres a 54 MB partition at the beginning of type Primary, the main windows one is System and the test windows 7 partition is Primary as well. I thought the first one was usually 100 MB but maybe I am wrong.Still I am stuck with a blinking cursor?

I have an OCZ Agility 3 as well as a Crucial M4 SSD I thought Id setup everything right but then noticed that the drive only had 100 mb available while following some steps from Seans SSD Optimization guide (I finished Step 3, didn't go to Step 4). I went into disk management, saw that the Agility drive was unallocated and that the drive I was seeing iComputer was actually just a 100 mb partition of the Crucial M4.I then created a new simple volume for the Agility, unassigned the partition drive letter, then tried to delete the partition, though the system didt allow me to (I had confused enabling the Agility drive with simply creating a partition so I thought I should get rid of the partition). After restarting, Im getting the bootmgr missing error, which leads me to the conclusion that I definitely messed something up.
* Ive tried using my original install disc to do a recovery install but then I get the error that:his version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of Windows* Ive also skipped to the command prompt and tried to run the bootrec commands to no avail. The bootrec /scanos command recognizes that Windows is installed on the Crucial M4 but I can't rebuild anything off of it.* I also tried to Custom Install on my drives and am told that I cannot install Windows on either Partition 1 or 2 of my Crucial or the Agility 3. I still see the 100 mb partition there marked as "Primary" while the bigger partition with the actual OS files is marked "System. The error message reads:Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disksI'm not sure what else I can do at this point. I just tried unplugging the drives and observed the following:* If both drives are plugged in, then I am unable to do a custom install of Windows onto any of the M4 partitions or the Agility* If the M4 is plugged in (but the Agility is not), then I also cannot install onto either partition* If only the Agility is plugged, then I **can** install Windows and go into the repair install windows but there is no OS, obviously.

Also the system thinks there is an older version of Windows but there isn't. The partition I created with Acronis was reported Primary in acronis, but in Win 7 installer it was reported as logical... Currently it is reported as Extended. Paragon partition manager reported that some partition overlaps another and this must be the key to solving the problem. But why fixboot and fixmbr didn't worked? I even tried them on the other data partition. I haven't modified the Recovery partition only made it hidden and not active. How to check the partition table for errors and fix them so Windows 7 won't get this error?

So basically I have two partitions: Vista C: and Windows 7 D:, boot file is on C:
I had installed Jolicloud OS on my computer and it carved out a drive from my Windows 7 partition. later on I EasyBCD to remove grub when I figured out that it will be a pita to get my wifi working. afterwards i booted from the jolicloud installer, then used Gparted to extend the Windows 7 partition back to it's original size. i then rebooted, and it ran the disk repair, but now Windows 7 won't boot, giving me:

If you have aWindows installation disc, insert the disc and restart your
computer. Click system recovery options, and then choose a recovery tool.

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer

A few weeks ago my computer turned off unexpectedly while I was using it. When I tried to start it up again, I got a black screen with a blinking cursor. I tried going into BIOS and changing the startup order to no avail. It's now back on default. I also ran the system diagnostic and it said nothing is wrong.I got a Windows 7 repair disk and attempted to use that. I ran the startup diagonosis and restarted-- again a black screen with a blinking cursor. I restored it to an earlier point and restarted-- black screen with blinking cursor. I then attempted to restore it to other points but got an error message (0x8000ffff) each time. Finally, I tried command prompt and did "bootsect /nt60 ALL" which did nothing. So I tried "bootsect /nt52 ALL" which did nothing. I did both of those again with "/force" (which I'm now guessing was a stupid move, but I was desperate to try anything) and now when I restart I get a black screen with "Invalid partition table". When I try to go to system restore now it tells me there are no restore points.
