"When it comes to compatibility, if it works with Windows Vista, it should work with Windows 7. There are no major API changes, which is a critical point: that means that if there's a Vista driver for your hardware, that should work under Windows 7 without issue. That's great news, because driver issues were one of the top frustrations for people moving to Windows Vista with XP-era hardware.
Windows 7 will be more reliable as well - there are some improvements in reliability and self-diagnosis. There will be fewer prompts for user account control for instance, and in fact the default will be at a lower threshold than it was for Vista. There will be more controls for the user regarding account approvals, and it will be more discoverable than it was in the past."
Major computer manufacters generally speaking provide pretty good support for drivers and updates. I thought it might be useful to provide links for them in order to expedite troubleshooting driver.
I have an older P4 2.8ghz Dell Dimension 3100 that currently has Windows 7 installed. Apparently the driver is the Sigmatel 97xx C-Major audio according to support.dell.com - the first thing I tried was the Windows Vista driver listed on Dell's site. Unfortunately that did not work. The driver appears to be installed and I have a sound device however I have no output through the speakers. I'm sure it is a driver related issue.
The device enabled, the speakers work and are hooked up properly. Any ideas where I can find a Windows 7 driver for the Dimension 3100 using the onboard Sigmatel 97XX?
I have A Dell XPS 420 with a Sigmatel Stac92XX C-Major HD Audio Driver and I was running Windows Vista X64 SP1 and everything was working fine.
I just recently installed Windows 7 RT Build 7100 and the Generic High Definition Audio Device Driver Installed and all types of media play, but it's causing a crackling sound in my audio and not only that it actually corrupts the file so if I were to play a MP4 on my XBOX 360 it also has the crackling noise even if the file was originally fine.
I don't know the last Sigmatel Driver that was on my Vista Build but I tried a few of them and even tried in Vista install mode but none of them work & I tried all the codecs packs that I always install and still nothing.
What should I do and is this a driver problem that's causing the crackling noise and corrupting my files or is their something else to this please help because it's driving me crazy?
I've been having this problem for the past couple of months and it's driving me insane. I've searched for hours on end without any luck of a fix. The problem is that my mouse lags (or stutters) every 5 seconds. The lag can sometimes be so bad that the mouse completely stops working for a few seconds. I've gone through 3 mice and they've all had the same problem so it can't be because of the mouse. The mouse I'm currently using is the Logitech Anywhere MX.
Powering on the computer and following the Windows logo, there is a black screen that the cursor can move around on, but it stays that way for a long time. It was over 8 minutes for the login screen to come on. I typed the password and then the same thing happens, black screen complete with cursor and it takes literally 8 minutes or more to come up to the desktop. Once up, everything is bogged down and takes forever to come up when clicked (ie control panel, windows start button, etc.) if they come up at all.
I have to use 'System Restore' from time to time to restore my computer. The instructions says: System Restore helps you restore your computer's system files to an earlier point in time. It's a way to undo system changes to your computer without affecting your personal files, such as e-mail, documents, or photos.' This is NOT correct. If I have used my Borland or Lazarus pascal compiler to compile a program on the same day I perform a 'System Restore', afterwards all executables, .bat, a some other files will be missing in a personal folder (latest example: C:CodeTyphonLazarusALazarusProjectsAsyncThreads missing the above file types). I have found other program executables missing also. The only thing that saved me today was the knowledge that Windows does this. I backed up my program project files before doing the 'System Restore'. Before you do one, you need to back up your personal files. Before the 'System Restore', make a list of all your software executables and then see how many are missing after the restore so that you can replace them. It seems to only delete those files of programs that you have used on the day of the restore.
Yesterday my friend needed me to test something for him in MySQL, a program I had installed a while back. When I tried to get in, it told me that I needed a root password. Since I forgot that, and I had no idea how to log in, I used Revo Uninstaller Pro to uninstall MySQL and delete all the leftover files and registry values that it left behind. I'm not sure if that is what caused it or something else that I can't remember, but since last night a lot of my computer services aren't working. For one thing, I can't log into MySQL.I can't install/uninstall any programs. - Solved.I have my Control Panel listed as a menu in my Start list, but when I highlight it, it shows the Control Panel as empty.I can't turn on my Windows Security CenterI can't access/turn on System Restore and clicking on 'Turn System Restore on or off' does nothing.I can't access System Information - Solved.or System Properties - Solved. In addition, I can't click the properties of any folder (If I try to right click My Computer and hit properties, nothing happens), my computers sound is not working, my taskbar shows my internet as offline even though its working and I can't open pictures - Solved.I also cannot run SFC / Scannow - Solved.or run Windows Update - Solved.I also feel like there might be something wrong with my graphics diver, because as I've been typing this post, my screen keeps flashing to my desktop - Solved.I cannot pull up my specs using the program 'Speccy' because it says Class Not Registered for everything. I personally wait for it to be available via updates, or at least the Firefox page. They actually didn't release a version once as it had issues. But, if you must.

In Windows 7 is this 256-color palette corrpution bug which is caused by EXPLORER.EXE program. In this bug colors are transformed in some strange psychedelia experiment. Does this bug have been reported to Microsoft or not because this is really annoying problem?Somebody have fixed this by killing EXPLORER.EXE with command line utility.Where is RUN button in windows 7 like in Windows XP?
For some strange reason today, whenever i download a file from the internet, it finishes but the download box automatically dissapears and the file doesn't show in the place i asked it to save.
Ive tried several different files, and have also tried using firefox instead of IE8.
I've had a major crisis this morning using Acronis to reclaim an empty 8gb partition. The hdd from left to right, in disk manager was:8Gb Empty (formerly page file) || D:Data 210Gb Data || R:Recovery 80Gb Recovery Using Acronis I expanded the 210gb to include all the 8Gb so now it would be:D:Data 218Gb || R:Recovery 80Gb Recovery After the re-start, in Computer, it says I have D:Data 8Gb plus 80Gb Recovery.Acronis tells me I have D:Data 218Gb plus 80Gb Recovery Disk Manager tells me I have D:Data 8Gb AND D:Data 218Gb plus 80Gb Recovery. The 140Gb plus of files that where on the original D: when at 210Gb have disappeared.Recuva only recognises D: as 8GB.
I have recently had a problem where my computer slows down so much it wont start programs up or even shut-down. It is usually after starting games like counter-strike source and such up.
And I have no idea how. I noticed that iTunes deleted more then half of my photos off my ipod, but didnt think anything of it, and then i started yahoo messenger and it said it was corrupted and to run a chkdsk. So I did, and this is what it came up with (below). What caused this? All my photos are back, it said it was recovering orphaned files and stuff. But there was too many to count. [code]
I have just installed Windows 7 and I'm having some major trouble with my graphics card. I had Vista installed, and just got my laptop from back from Dell after some repairs for faulty motherboard/GPU. I have wiped my hard drive and started fresh by installing Windows 7 Build 7100.
All seemed good when I first opened it up, everything was nice but I noticed I only had Vista Basic color scheme. I had a look in device manager and under display adaptor it had Standard VGA adaptor listed.
I then installed my nVidia driver number 185.85 and upon restart I got a black screen after welcome screen. I then rebooted and all seemed fine. After around 15-20 seconds of use windows would lock up for a minute or so, then flash a BSOD and then reboot.
I figured it was a driver issue, so I jumped on and downloaded the latest driver for my graphics card (GeForce 8400M GS) which was 186.03. This had the exact same result. Random shutdowns and failing to boot, alot of freezing when I could boot.
I have found if I go into device manager and disable it, I can run windows 7 fine but can't use screen savers or basically anything that needs graphics.
I've had the computer for about a year, a custom build...it's been working fine, then all of a sudden the problem started & now I'm suffering serious lag & slow down even with the most simple tasks (like clicking on the start icon) the HDD light is on continually & I can hear the drive clicking away. It never stops. (Starts when the windows loading screen comes on)Boot time is also incredibly slow around 10 minutes to boot up.I've just done a clean install of Windows 7 pro x 64 and the problem still persists...no other software installed other than my graphics & sound card drivers. The workstation isn't connected to the net I use a laptop for all that/this.On Task Manager my CPU is 0% & my Memory 6% which is fine..The drive is a Seagate Barracuda 500gb 7,200 SATA II.The programs causing this are mostly with-in "System" & SVChost" processes on the HDD.
For example: Windows service profile RtBackup NTFS free space map NTFS master file table Winevt logs
I have read many threads about these type of problems but with never any clarification.I've got a ton of work to do...and I cant even open control panel under 1 minute right now.
I have been having random graphical issues. Sometimes in games (ie. COD4) the screen goes black when a new map loads. I then have to exit the game and reboot the PC, hoping it fixes my issue. Also, since I updated to the latest version, there are random graphical glitches in the game (weird objects on the ground and in the air in the game). Now the issue is much worse:
When I boot up my PC, my taskbar is completely blank, except for the Start Button. I'd be willing to deal with this issue if I knew how to fix it when it pops up. I uploaded a screenshot here: [URL] I'm running the latest drivers from Windows update from Nvidia. My motherboard is the EVGA Nforce 680i.
Im currently using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 + SP1 as my main O/S and also running a MS Virtual Machine which is using Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit + SP1. On my main computer I'm also running Ultramon 3.0.10 with two monitors. On the Virtual PC window where the close X and maximise and minimise command buttons are there is also two more there for Ultramon, one is expand the window over both screens and the other is move the application to the other monitor. The issue I've found is that when the Virtual PC is locked on my main screen, and I click on one of the ultramon buttons it will move the Virtual PC window to the second monitor and unlock the current Windows session that is running. (major security flaw)
I was customizing my task bar when I ran into this problem. I want my taskbar to be layered like this [URL] but I only have the icon changed and I want the layered icons also so I can have my Major icons on top and then minor ones on bottom but I cant figure out how to do that.
I accidental uninstalled a nvida driver from my control panel. Now everything looks huge. I need to fix it and don't know which version of the driver I need to download to get it back to normal.
I have a Creative Live cam vista im vf0260 and I cannot use it on my Windows 7 Home Premium PC because I have no compatible driverand recommend me a suitable driver for my Creative Live cam vista im vf0260
I have a laptop with a ATI X300 grapics card. Newest drivers are for Vista. When trying to install them manually Windows says the drivers are meant for an older version of Windows.Any way to modify the .ini file of the drivers of something so Windows 8 will accept, "belive" it's Windows 8 drivers...?
I decided to only install the ethernet driver for the time being till i read more reports on the others. The ethernet driver is a good few months newer than whats provided in the Windows 7 RTM and works fine!
I am wondering if someone can tell me the procedure for installing the driver for the HP deskjet 920c in Windows 7. It was reported that it is possible to use this driver for the HP deskjet 916C, which I have since 2002. The 916c was the "ALDI" - version of the 920c. I am searching for this driver, but the HP page does not offer me a download.
Also the list in Win 7 does not show me this driver in my German Windows 7 professional SB version.
