I have a laptop with a ATI X300 grapics card. Newest drivers are for Vista. When trying to install them manually Windows says the drivers are meant for an older version of Windows.Any way to modify the .ini file of the drivers of something so Windows 8 will accept, "belive" it's Windows 8 drivers...?
View 4 RepliesWorking on a client's computer that was blue screening with Vista 32 bit HP desktop gl309aa. She cannot find the original Vista install CD. I determined that the culprit was probably the wifi driver, and hoped to install updated drivers for that, plus video card and sound card drivers. After much fiddling with the system, I finally got it started through Startup Repair long enough to install the video driver. I had to go through 2 sets of memory diagnostics to start it at all, since even safe mode was not working. When I went to do the sound card driver, it required an uninstall first, so I did that, and foolishly went along with the restart to finish the process. Lacking a sound card driver, it blue screened all over again. Tried everything, including many times with HP Recovery, but every time it blue screens before any process can complete. On top of this, while working on it, she had a power "flash" for a second, and now the system is missing BOOTMGR so it won't even try to boot into safe mode or anything else. I have the drivers on flash but cannot install them. I've decided to forget Vista (awful system anyway) and give her Windows 7 instead. Much more stable, and her data is backed up in case she loses it.
am I going to have any problems installing the Windows 7 if the computer still thinks it has no driver for the sound card? And is there a way to install the file before or during the Windows 7 installation so it will go smoothly? Again, BSOD every time I start HP recovery so there is no way to use that, and we will have a new Windows 7 CD to begin this process.
I recently bought a new Sata 3 Hard Drive (500gb Sata 3 Barccuda) for my PC. I've downloaded countless Windows 7 ISO's. I have a LEGIT key. After burning it on ImgBurn, Nero and Poweriso at 4x and 3.5 (Can't go lower than 3.5) It gets to the Language setup after 30minutes or so, Than a futher hour to get to driver selectio, but once on driver selection it tells me "No device driver found", I've tried lots of seperate ISO's and even Vista!

So over the past few days it seems that I have lost control of my C drive and all of its contents.I can no longer properly access it, and everything opens in "Read-Only". I can no longer install programs or modify existing programs.According to the security permissions, I have none. Nor can I change my permissions because in order to change them I need access to the C drive, which I don't have.I have tried creating other users and putting them in the admin group, etc. but nothing is working.

I have a year and a couple month old HP DV4-122nr laptop with Vista x86 Home Premium OEM installed. It recently had issues shutting off randomly, so I decided to do a clean install to Windows 7 Ultimate x64.I have done tons of installs in the past since XP came out and have always had good luck. I tried to do my regular clean install (via USB) and once I got to the "expanding files" part, the laptop would just shut down. I tried it several times, same deal. I then tried installing from a DVD. Again, shut off at random points during the expanding files section.
I then figured it had something to do with Win 7, so I tried Vista. This time I got it to the point where it would restart, but then it would just go black afterwords and show no video.I tried several flavors of Vista (x86,x64,Home Premium, Ultimate, SP1, SP2 and SP0), but again to no avail. I then finally got Vista Business x86 to install, but when I installed the graphics driver, it killed it (black screen). I went into safe mode and uninstalled the graphics driver and it booted normally.

I presume the discs were the upgrade variety, but I don't have them in front of me. View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been fiddling like mad for a couple of days now with a new Win7 Ultimate x64 machine "desktop", and using an old XP Pro machine as a fileserver, the last few hours getting the XP machine, which is rather old, to respond to Wake On LAN. I've been trying to track down why the DSL router is triggering it from standby mode, so I swapped to an older router than my usual one to see if it causes the same problem.Suddenly, the Win7 machine has decided it's found a "new network" and called it the exciting moniker "network 3". I don't want a new network. I am quite happy with the old one. I cannot find anywhere in the baffling wizards etc to tell it which network I am on. It just seems to be an arbitrary decision by Win 7. It seemed to happen a while after I unplugged the DSL side of the router from the phone line, to see if it was stuff coming in from the internet waking the server, but it didn't happen immediately, so I have no idea why Win 7 suddenly decided it had found a "new" network. All the IP addresses (static) are the same, etc.
Every version of Windows seems to get more opaque and designed to prevent anyone getting "under the hood" to see what is actually going on. How do I get under the hood to delete this network that I do not want that is precisely the same computers as the old one? If I plug in another different router some time, do I get yet another "new" network? Is there somewhere I can delete these networks? From the command line perhaps? I can find a "set up a new network" link in the Network And Sharing Center, but "get rid of this one you didn't want" doesn't seem to appear, for some reason.
Like many people out there I'm having problems renaming, deleting, moving, copying, and playing mkv files. If I attempt to do one of the above tasks, windows explorer will crash and I have to restart my computer. I ran a cmd scannow and there indeed was a problem with my cbs log. However, that has since been repaired yet the mkv problem persists. I've also adjusted my viewing options to only show details in the folder, hoping that perhaps it was the thumbnail generator that was to blame. This also did not work.The mkv file itself doesn't appear to be corrupted. I've been able to successfully transfer some files to an external hard drive. I've been able to play these files no problem on my work computer running windows xp.
I have a feeling it's somehow tied to divX. I've attempted to uninstall the program several times using the normal process from the control panel, once with ccleaner, and currently attempting a forced uninstall with a trial version of revo uninstaller pro. None of these has so far worked. Anyone have any bright ideas, save for reinstalling my OS? Also, please keep your suggestions in layman's termsI'm by no stretch well versed in computers.
Want to upgrade Vista Home to Windows 7 Premium. The workstation definitely has the horse power for Windows 7.But visiting computer shops, the upgrade options are cleared out or not available and they suggest a new install of Windows 7 Professional, they also say its cheaper than an upgrade $140 vs $250. Windows 8 is not an option at this time.I have very little data or software on the current machine with Vista,but do have Outlook 2010.Will a new install of Windows 7 clean out the hard drive and I'll need to re-install Outlook?

Now the 2x Win Vista PC are on separate networks: Network 2 & Network 3. The Vista Network 2 PC can no longer see or use the printer, which is cable attached to the Network 3 Vista PC. Seems like the Win 7 installed new, separate networks for the existing Vista PC's. The network hardware is: Comcast modem > Dynex router > Cisco ethernet switch > 3 PC's. I did not change any network connections, hardware or software on the Vista PC's. I simply removed the Win XP PC, and replaced it with Win 7 PC on that network cable.

The other option would be to go the campus computer store and buy a copy of windows 7 for $20. i used an ssd drive 64gb torqx for months until my computer burned out now when i try to install on any laptop or desktop windows didnt see it on install it always can up in bios and is set correctly when i used dban to format it shows up in install but windows say cant install on it it let my format it now in any windows install but wont work to install it comes up with a yellow triangle on bottom and say windows cant be installed on this drive?

I've been trying different things like formatting the partition right before the install and making the partition that Windows 7 is going to go on "active" in the .cmd prompt. I keep going in circlesinstalling Windows 7, getting system recovery and eventually choosing to reformat from Gateway's manufacturer settings...although once I do this I can't actually get back into Windows Vista as that now seems to be messed up. (I don't have the original Vista installation cd). Then I try rebooting and installing from the Windows 7 cd again to try more techniques to get it to work...I'm at the point of possibly deleting the recovery partition because the Vista remnants seem to be on this partition and taking over once I install Windows 7.

I purchased the software, downloaded the .iso file from Microsoft's site, then burned the .iso file to a disc. Once on the disc it showed a few different folders and a setup option. I launched the setup option, which brought up the install window for windows 7. I chose clean install because upgrade is not an option for the current version of vista that I have, and while it is copying the files, after about 3% it gives me the error code 0x80070241 and says something about not being able to copy all of the needed files and that some of them may be corrupted. I don't know if this is a problem with my computer or with the disc that I've burned.
