View 1 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded to windows 7 Ultimate to utilize the XP mode. I currently access a company thru a VPN client network on my 64 bit Windows. The company has changed some programs that are 32 bit which I have downloaded to XP. Will the 2 systems work together or will I need to access the company from the XP side? Also, is the remote desktop connection something that came with the upgrade?

View 1 Replies View RelatedStill getting used to w7 and find little things that bug me, not really important, but is there a way to modify the way Explorer operates? Specifically, in xp, when one opens a file on the tree, the sub-folders also drop down on the tree, and adjust to the visible screen. My w7 (x64, sp1) doesn't do either of those things. Is this changeable?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been fiddling like mad for a couple of days now with a new Win7 Ultimate x64 machine "desktop", and using an old XP Pro machine as a fileserver, the last few hours getting the XP machine, which is rather old, to respond to Wake On LAN. I've been trying to track down why the DSL router is triggering it from standby mode, so I swapped to an older router than my usual one to see if it causes the same problem.Suddenly, the Win7 machine has decided it's found a "new network" and called it the exciting moniker "network 3". I don't want a new network. I am quite happy with the old one. I cannot find anywhere in the baffling wizards etc to tell it which network I am on. It just seems to be an arbitrary decision by Win 7. It seemed to happen a while after I unplugged the DSL side of the router from the phone line, to see if it was stuff coming in from the internet waking the server, but it didn't happen immediately, so I have no idea why Win 7 suddenly decided it had found a "new" network. All the IP addresses (static) are the same, etc.
Every version of Windows seems to get more opaque and designed to prevent anyone getting "under the hood" to see what is actually going on. How do I get under the hood to delete this network that I do not want that is precisely the same computers as the old one? If I plug in another different router some time, do I get yet another "new" network? Is there somewhere I can delete these networks? From the command line perhaps? I can find a "set up a new network" link in the Network And Sharing Center, but "get rid of this one you didn't want" doesn't seem to appear, for some reason.
I have a laptop with a ATI X300 grapics card. Newest drivers are for Vista. When trying to install them manually Windows says the drivers are meant for an older version of Windows.Any way to modify the .ini file of the drivers of something so Windows 8 will accept, "belive" it's Windows 8 drivers...?
View 4 Replies View RelatedLike many people out there I'm having problems renaming, deleting, moving, copying, and playing mkv files. If I attempt to do one of the above tasks, windows explorer will crash and I have to restart my computer. I ran a cmd scannow and there indeed was a problem with my cbs log. However, that has since been repaired yet the mkv problem persists. I've also adjusted my viewing options to only show details in the folder, hoping that perhaps it was the thumbnail generator that was to blame. This also did not work. The mkv file itself doesn't appear to be corrupted. I've been able to successfully transfer some files to an external hard drive. I've been able to play these files no problem on my work computer running windows xp.
I have a feeling it's somehow tied to divX. I've attempted to uninstall the program several times using the normal process from the control panel, once with ccleaner, and currently attempting a forced uninstall with a trial version of revo uninstaller pro. None of these has so far worked. Anyone have any bright ideas, save for reinstalling my OS? Also, please keep your suggestions in layman's termsI'm by no stretch well versed in computers.
I recently setup an FTP server using this genius little piece of hardware called CloudFTP. Anyways, I can access my CloudFTP just fine through my smartphone, using a file explorer app w/FTP ability?is there a downloadable Windows 7 file explorer freeware/software app that can do exact the same thing as my Android? Currently, I am only able to access the CloudFTP via Windows through the Google Chrome browser, but the interface is.... dismal, to say the least.I like the built-in Windows 7 explorer just fine, but I'm not sure I can access my FTP server using it.

I have tried installing Win 7 about ten times now (64 bit version) on about three different physical PCs and in around 6 VMs and always end up with a system that does not even permit itself to modify software that it has installed. Sometimes, an installation will run with no errors right to the end and then abort because it cannot write the start-up link to the programs start menu. There are hardly any options possible when installing Win 7 so I don't see that I'm setting a wrong option anywhere.

Normally when I want to search for something on my hard drive I would not want emails to be included in the search. I also found "sticky notes" in that same subfile? I'd like to modify my search indexing but I can't get into the list of locations.

i just installed dBpoweramp and i can see a complete metadata info about the audio files via popup info & Audio Properties tab (created by dBpoweramp), i consider some of them are advanced info like encoder settings, accuraterip results, CD catalog, etc. can we add a custom columns on Explorer for these info?
and tried to add an extra columns like 'compression ratio', 'encoded by' & 'bit depth' on Explorer but it shows nothing. I can see via dBpoweramp for some audio files, but not on Explorer, it just blank.
I was wondering if it was possible to modify one of the Windows shortcuts that comes with the program. I haven't been able to find a good answer yet. Basically I just wanted to switch the commands ctrl+N and ctrl+shift+N in Explorer. Is this possible

am running cmd.exe as Administrator from a user on the Administrators group.
In the Manage Wireless Networks window I have three wireless networks. Two of these networks are workplace networks (let's call them Work1 and Work2, the the other is my home network (Home1).
The Work1 network is grouped under Networks you can view, while Work2 and Home1 are grouped under Networks you can view, modify, and reorder. All three of them are set to automatically connect.
When I get to work and turn on my laptop it automatically connects to Work1 by default, but I actually want it to connect to Work2. I can manually disconnect from Work1 and connect to Work2, but I'd much prefer it to just automatically connect to Work2 by default.
The problem is, I can't modify or reorder Work1; I can't even remove it. If I view its Properties, I see a message saying "These settings are managed by your system administrator." and all options are greyed out.
I have system admin rights on my laptop, and I have spoken with the system administrator at work
Recently, I installed an SSD and formatted Windows 7 onto it. I use a 1TB Harddrive to save everything else to, but recently figured i'd do a little cleaning. When I tried deleting any of the files under F:Program Files however, it always came up with the same error :"You require permission from SYSTEM to make changes to this file" or"You require permission from ADMINISTRATOR to make changes to this file"Common sense led me to believe that it would be an active process that was behind all of this, but I'm not entirely sure what some of these folders even are; and one of the things I can't delete is a jpeg! I'm running on an admin account, and have even tried using 'net user administrator' in order to remove the files, but still, nothing

I'm suprise that the menu doesn't contain the "advance" button..
