I have 2 computers that I want to get rid of. One has win 7 and is a desktop and the other is an ols laptop with XP. What I would like to do is to wipe the data off the disk without killing the O/S. The only apps I've found so far do an entire clean.

View 1 Replies View Relatedrecently i made a few videos with fraps that took up around 110 gigs of space, so i decided to compress all that and upload to Internet, the amount of space the videos are taking up are now down to 70, but my free disk space hasn't increased, in fact it's decreasing as if i never deleted the videos, it isn't decreasing on it's own only if i make files, so basically it'll take up space and it just stays that way for some reason.i've looked around the internet for a solution, i have tried:disabling automatic backup, that didn't do anything. scanned my computer with malwarebytes to make sure it isn't some worm, nothing found. used disk cleanup, cleared up 900 mb but the free space still didn't change. used ccleaner, cleared up 500 mb but the free space still didn't change. used disk check, nothing bad was found. used windirstat, everything seems fine as it should be, but theres 100 gigs of <unknown>, and i have no freaking clue what it is. used spacesniffer, found absolutely nothing that would take up that much space,i would use defraggler, but it will take way too long so i'd use it when i have no other option, there's gotta be another way other than literally waiting over a day for defraggler to finish, and chances are that it wouldn't change anything as well meaning i would have wasted a bunch of time,

During this process, I selected 'Custom installation'followed by the hard disk partition containing my personal data and 'Drive options (advanced)', followed by 'Delete'. Is this a secure method of erasure or should I take additional precautionary steps before selling?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running the 64-bit version of Windows 7 along with IE9. I have found that a problem exists for both the 32-bit as well as the 64-bit version of IE9. I find that for the 32-bit IE9 there are 2 "iexplore.exe *32" files running when the program is started. With the 64-bit version of IE9 there are 2 "iexplore.exe" files running but that's not the problem.
I have found that when I have checked the box "Delete browser history on exit" (Tools - Internet Options - General tab - Browsing History) this sets off the problem on IE9 exit. Both of the iexplore.exe disappear but 2 new files rundll32.exe (*32 for the 32 bit version) appear. These 2 new files run for several minutes at 100% cpu and each will have up to 680Mb of memory. If I go back and uncheck the "Delete browser history on exit" these files, rundll32.exe do not appear and the problem goes away.
It appears the problem is with "Delete browser history on exit" function. I've been using IE9 since it came out and never had my computer, which is now freezing while the rundll32.exe are running, happen before. Ran Malwarerbyts, Super anti-spyware, Spybot, MS Essentials, Advanced system care (Just the Malware finder), Argente utilities (Just the Malware finder), System Mechanic (Just the Malware finder) in safe mode and nothing. I also am not using registry cleaners.
Yesterday while using Firefox I noticed it kept crashing, with the cause being a "BEX Event". I try opening it to no avail, everytime terminating immediately after I clicked on it. I tried Chrome and Explorer, but both of them suffered the same problem, immediately crashing due to the BEX error. I restarted my system multiple times to see if it subsides, but it reappeared promptly everytime for ALL three browsers (!) I tried Safe Mode with networking to see if its gone. Nope, same problem, with Explorer and Firefox collapsing instantly, while Chrome seem to take around 10-12 seconds of surfing before flatlining due to the same cause.
I then decided to use System Restore and managed to take my whole system back to 5 days ago when none of the problems were happening. Tried again, but nope, same issue with a BEX event. This time it seems Explorer would display it as BEX64 instead of just BEX. I tried resetting entire settings for Explorer, but the BEX error would always prevent me from doing so by shutting down the whole things before its done. I thought, maybe, just maybe, it has something to do with a faulty DEP on Explorer, and added it the list of exceptions for DEP. Still didn't work, and the system wouldn't let me add Chrome and Firefox to the list either. I tried to see if maybe I can download some new antivirus or antispyware programs off the net, except that none of my browsers work, so I have no access to the Internet in both normal and Safe modes.... Sufficient to say I am typing here from a library's computer.

My SSD is in perfect working order and everything is blazing fast, but for some reason I only get a 5.9 for a rating. I am using the Intel X25-V SSD. View 7 Replies View RelatedI manage a large array of disks and rely on Robocopy via batch files to backup only changed data. This has served me well for a year or so now. However, last week I had a drive go flakey. For some reason all of the folders on the drive beginning with letters K through Z got trashed. Since no one realized this the backup script ran on schedule and promptly deleted all folders on my backup drive beginning with letters K through Z.
I've used a couple of backup programs in the past and I'm fairly sure this issue is not adressed.

I received a reply from a user (don't have access to the name right now) who suggested a freeware sync package which most likely would work. However, company policy states that no freeware is to be run on our systems. While I could probably get away with it a question comes to mind - Why isn't this a standard feature in commercially available backup software. There must be a name for this type of option. Does anyone know of a commercially available package and / or what this feature might be called? I can't be the only person who has run into this problem.

I created a partition in the free space to copy my documents into so I could overwrite Windows keeping my documents intact. However I did not have enough free space for all my documents so after copying over one batch of files I shrunk the windows partition and extended my document partition. I had to repeat this again so I now have three extended document partitions.[/FONT] I then put in the windows CD, formatted the OS Recovery, SYSTEM Reserved and Windows parititions but then was unable to install Windows as it did not recognise any disks. I attempted FixMBR etc but to no avail.
I searched around and saw i may be able to change the sector hex from 42 (dynamic) to 07 (basic), but im wondering whether doing so will preserve the extended partitions i have? So my question is, will changing 42 to 07 preserve the extended partitions. Do I need to repeat for each 42 (like the link you posted) and then the three dynamic extended partitions will then become one basic partition? At the moment I can not actually see the data so have no idea how to back it up? Otherwise I would do as you say and back it up, format and copy back over.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a 2TB hard drive which i have partitioned into 3 partitions, (249GB for C:, 1000GB for D: data, 613GB for E: data). Now the 1000GB partition which is filled with data has disappeared from My computer. It happened after installing a dual boot with linux and using the 613GB as unallocated space for the linux partitions, (I have since removed the linux and partitions on the E: 613GB and created a ntfs primary partition again).
I have uploaded a screenshot that you can see that partition is not in my computer and in Disk management it only shows by "Disk 0" and not under volumes. I have tried using 'Diskpart' To assign a drive letter but under 'list volume' nothing appears. I have also done a a partition details which shows no volume, dont know if I am able to merge the partition in anyway or if the partition table that needs to be fixed

A little background on my system's configuration. My system was/is configured is a two disk RAID0 with a system partition and two other partition for Windows and programs. I'm wanting to migrate the partitions/data to a single disk system. I created a system image using both the Windows backup software and Novabackup. The problem I'm having is restoring either of those images to a single disk. Is it possible to restore an image from a RAID configuration to a single disk? If so, what am I missing? No matter which image I try to restore from, I either get a fail from Windows or can't be done in so many words from Novabackup. I just want the RAID image on a single disk.

I wanted to reinstall Windows, so from within Windows setup I formatted the system and Windows partition, leaving a partition containing documents and pictures (i was unable to delete them). From then, Windows seemed unable to recognise the disk so i searched in DISKPART and found that the disk was labelled as INVALID.
After Googling around it looks as though i can simply change the 1C02 in the hex from 42 to 07 - however, my only concern was that the documents i have on this drive are spanned across three adjacent (dynamic?) partitions - so i am concerned that by focing the disk to be basic i will lose the connection between these partitions. - When ii restarted it. it said "Select a proper Boot Device"
- I Booted into BIOS and it stopped getting Detected
- I reseated the HDD and it was getting detected again
- I took it out and connected a friends system and checked

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell XPS 8000 with a quad core, 8 gig ram, 7 pro, 6gb hdd and 6gb controller. I've tried SSD's that were 6gb and still having issues with slow performance. My main program is Arcview Mapping. I"ve tweaked the cache, I've put the Win swapfile on a second 6gb drive, tried 'no swapfile' so it all runs in ram, just about everything I can think of. We have gigabit nic, switch to switch, etc. It uses a lot of updates to the screen straight from internet, but local files should load faster. I have a copy on my local 6gb drive then sync to server at eod trying to r/o net latency. Majority of work is to/from local drive, but still can't wring out more speed. When I open Arcview, it takes 1.5 minutes to get to a workable screen. File size I'm loading doesn't make a diff.

I installed partition magic to format a external HDD with the FS FAT32 since ps3 supports only FAT32 but to my dismay D: where I have all my data does not show up on explorer it shows up in disk management with the size of the disk 115.7 GB unable to explore add or change drive letter PS help..I installed recover partition and all the files shows up but I dont have an option to recover...

Well, the last time I used a VHD to boot into Windows 8, Windows 7 only went to recovery mode, as if Windows 8 was an actual partition on the hard drive and not just a file on the hard drive. (And Windows 8 was basically telling me that it was expired...) Now, that, I just don't understand.I'm just asking if there's another way to do it without killing 7 because basically, all of my important things are on Windows 7! And, I really can't afford to be unable to access them or to even lose them.
