Jun 8, 2012
Computer is frozen, black screen with movable mouse after splash logo. Same happens in safe mode. The log in screen never shows up. The computer sounds like its loading at that point, but nothing ever comes up. I can get into ubuntu. This happened after updating my graphics card nvidia. I have dual monitors. Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium, HP Pavilion p6107c Desktop.

Upon starting the laptop it goes through the standard Starting Windows screen and then i get a black screen with the mouse icon visible and movable however the logon prompt never appears. The same happens when starting in safe mode however an error is displayed stating:Logonui.exe : The Application was unable to start correctly 0x000006 I have performed a chkdsk on the drive and also run windows repair performing startup repair that found no issues. No restore points have been created so cant try that either.t command prompt i have tried:bootrec /fixbootbootrec /fixmbrall to no avail.Other than recovering the users data and re installing the machine from scratch is there any trickery i can perform?

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium. All of a sudden, it has stopped starting up without me installing anything new.I gets past the bios, shows the Windows logo and then before the login page appears, the screen goes black and only has the mouse pointer (which I can move around curiously!).I have tried doing Startup repair, loading in Safe Mode, loading with lower screen resolution, loading with Last Known Good Configuaration, done a memory scan: they all lead to the same result.I don't think it is an issue with the Hard Drive because I can still hear it spinning, also, I am able to pull files off it when I plug it in to my USB (using an adapter). Also, Windows loads to some point and it would get stuck at the bios if it was.Don't think it is the graphics card or I wouldn't be able to see anything that I see up until that point including the mouse pointer.I have tried using Google but many places have left this unresolved or the problem is not exactly like mine.

So basically over the weekend I shut my computer down because I was not going to be home. On sunday I go to turn my computer on and it hangs at the windows logo splash screen after POST. So I grab my laptop and start researching. I am able to get into safe mode with out any trouble only when I start windows normally do I run into problems. So here is what i have tried and with no success. Start up repair w/ and w/out disc, system restore, I have reinstalled windows 3 times, with 2 different versions, pro and ultimate and on first reboot I have the same problem. I flashed my bios about a year ago and have had minor issues since then that were all fixed by using krndbg and windows symbols server as a reference...

Just today i read a post stating that java has a bad virus. Know that i ran a malwarebites scan and it found 1 harmful item and i deleted the item. After restarting my computer from a prompt, my lenova v570 laptop now turns on with a black screen and a movable cursor right after the windows "welcome screen".
ctrl + alt + delete does not work
I have tried in safe mode and it turns on properly. So, i tried to do what others sujjested on other forums, which was to " roll back my graphics driver" after that, nothing has change.

My computer loads normally to the login screen. I enter my password and press enter. It displays the welcome message with the spinning circle thing, and seems to load correctly. When finished, it is at this point my screen goes black showing only the cursor which I can move. When I hover over where the taskbar should be, the screen dims a bit. When I move away from the 'invisible' taskbar, the screen brightens to it's original state. This leads me to believe that the desktop may be loaded, but for some reason is not displaying. After about a minute, everything displays and the computer works perfectly. Occasionally, there is not an issue, and the desktop loads perfectly, seconds after logging in.

Been trying to fix this for hours now. So, this morning I was gaming a bit, playing Cryostasis which I got for super cheap from the sale on Steam. You can see my system specs in my signature. You'll notice that I have a PhysX card running with ATI. The game itself has been having some freezing issues, I looked online and read there was PhysX freezes but the 1.1 patch was supposed to fix it, and that's the version from Steam. So anyway, it was running ok for a while and then the game froze up during one of the "dream sequences". I had no option but to do a hard reboot (previous freezes allowed me to ctrl+alt+del and close it). After this, I saw the windows splash/loading screen, and then the screen goes blank at the login screen. I don't see anything but I hear the chime sound. I can even login but again no video signal - the monitor can't find an input.
I rebooted into safe mode and it worked. I then ran Driver Sweeper and deleted all my ATI, Nvidia, and PhysX drivers completely. After that, I rebooted and I can get into windows with a normal login, but not again after that as it will automatically install some ATI drivers. I've treid reinstalling 10.6 and 10.5 multiple times but after install it always goes to blank screen at login. It certainly seems like a driver issue, but the drivers have been working fine for a couple months. One thing I noticed is that now when I run the Catalyst driver installs, it fails at the end trying to do the "Drag and Drop Transcoding" which I know is a Windows feature so maybe that's a part of the problem.
I've taken out my Nvidia card completely to rule out incompatibility issues. I've taken off the Crossfire bridge and even removed the 2nd card. As I stated, I've completely deleted everything relating to ATI and Nvidia and tried a fresh driver install of the ATI drivers with no luck.
I've read of people getting the blank screen after login but mine is different as it's occurring before I'm able to see the login page. I found one response where it appears the poster had the exact same issue as me and nothing could fix it, except for a system restore... Somehow, however, I don't have any restore points... I've seen it say it was creating restore points (such as before a windows update) but when I went deeper into the options I found that there was 0HDD space allotted so it probably tried to make a point then didn't save anything (I've now allotted space).
Seems like the only option I have right now is to do a reinstall of Win 7 and hopefully be able to copy over most of my files... although anything requiring an install is a huge pain in the butt since simply copying won't actually install it.

i have important files on my system, so want to repair the install, as opposed to restoring from an image, or reinstalling.i have Windows 7 x64 on a single raid disk (single because is already setup when i buy more disks). this system has been operation for more than 6 months. Virus maybe i had avg=-x64 free, it had some errors last week(first time i have ever seen this), so i removed it, and installed m$security essentials. after a few days i got a virus and or trojan, maybe vundo, from running a program fix that was cleverly disguised. i tried scanning with MSE to no avail. so i removed the deadbeat program and reinstalled avg-x64 free.in the recent past, the pc started to exihibit some symptoms. after boot, and after splash screen, it would stay on a black screen for about 30 seconds while hard drive thrashed incessantly, then the login screen would finally come up. this is the main symptom that bugged me enough to run the scans. i also had checked the windows firewall, and i cant get into that, its kicking back errors and wont let me access some stuff across my network. looks like the virus had a field day.
so after putting back on avg-x64 free, i updated and ran scan, and installed/updated malwarebytes and ran scan. it found stuff, i removed them, restarted. i thought teh system was clean eventhough still thrashing like mad, the next day i ran them again it found more stuff, and removed them. a couple of them were registry entries, a couple of them were just game files found bad. nothing really in the system directory which you would expect to see with a virus. one of the things i noted to be the virus was a file called mse or msde in the user appdata temp folder, then onto the system32 or syswow64 folder. no boot now on the last run of the virus scan, it rebooted, but it wont make it past the splash screen. this is where i am stuck.what i have done i have ran system repair several times, and i manually ran sfc /scannow a couple times, and chkdsk /f /x. i started to run kaspersky 10, but i saw that it has problems completely manglind raid arrays, so i avoided that. i have tried to start in safe mode several times, same symptom after splash screen goes black, then reboots. i have tried booting in logging mode,i have tried booting in command prompt, the last driver is loads is ahcix64s.sys, it thrashes for a bit, then restarts,i have tried to load last known good configuration, and it restarts after splash screen goes black as well. one more thing, i have system restore turned off since im a virus remover kind of guy, not a m$ dependent kind of guy, but i think this has shown that system restore is needed on Windows 7 more than xp.

I'm loading a new system and encountering a problem I haven't seen before. I have a Gigabyte Z77MXD3H motherboard with an Intel i5 3570 proc. When I boot to the Windows 7 install disk I get the BIOS splash screen, then the monitor goes so dim I can't read any text during the boot process but I can tell there is text on the screen. The monitor's menu also appears so dark its unusable. After some time the text mode finishes and the Windows install menu pops up and everything returns to normal. I can find loads of posts about black screens after windows boots, but not before.

Sometimes when I turn on my computer, the screen will turn on as usual, and there is like a cursor that blinks in the top left corner of the screen, again, as usual. However, it will sometimes stop, and stay on this screen for upwards of a minute or more. The laptop sounds like it's still working, as the fan is going pretty fast and everything sounds like it's spinning, however it doesn't show anything on the screen. After around the minute duration, the screen will go black and the normal boot up process is proceeded with. From what I've read of other people, they can't even get past this screen, which is why I think my problem is slightly different, or the same, just not as severe. Does my problem also sound like it's the MBR, as indicated by other people's questions on the Internet?
If so, is there any easy way to repair it without having to use a windows 7 disc, as I have a laptop and didn't get a disc with it...

I'am running windows 7 professional. When i boot the PC, i have no trouble up to the point of the windows logo. When this disappears my screen (SyncMaster 913n) keep displaying the text "optimal screen resolution is 1280x1024 60 hertz" and then i dont see anything else than that. Even if i change the screen resolution to 800x600 i get the message. My GFX is 8800 Geforce GT with the drivers 285.62 (64Bit) same issue. Everything was working fine earlier today, then after a reboot i got this issue. The computer is a clean re-install so can their be missing some drivers besides the GT 8800 that can make the problem?

today i was working on the PC when the power got down for a second, i started the pc and the power blinked again, so i just waited 30 mins or so and i turned on the pc again, but this time it only got to the color balls that form the windows logo, showed the "please wait" message with a black background to finally led me to a black screen with the windows 7 ultimate logo on the bottom center, a button with some accesibility options to the left and the red button to turn off and reset the machine,i cant do anything more, Ctrl+Alt+Supr doesn't work or the windows key+R. starting in safe mode doesn't change anything neither.
my specs are:
Intel core 2 duo 2.4 ghz
2 gb RAM
250 GB HDD
geForce 9500 gt
PS: i didn't install or configure anything before the second time the power got down, and after the first one the pc started fine.

Basically my laptop was working fine last night. I turn it on this morning and after the windows logo appears the screen goes black. However i can see and move the mouse cursor still.I tried pressing f8 at the beginning of the start up, and tred to repair my problem using the windows 7 repair features, but it didn't work, annoyingly i forgot to set a restore point as well so i can't try that. When i go into safe mode the exact same thing happens, but with the mouse being slightly more pixelated and blocky.I've got a Windows 7 Premium 32 bit disk which i purchased from Windows, but when i load that up it tells me that to install it i need to log into windows, which i obviously can't.I'm using a HP G70-120EM, i've had it for just over 12 months (Annoyingly exactly a week after the warranty is void) and like i mentioned, i've been using Windows 7 premium 32 bit for the past 2 months

My laptop is hp-dv6-3122tx with ATI 5650 and intel hd switchable graphics.Recently my laptop started giving me a black screen after the windows logo. I was having some issues with my GPUs too.Sometimes my ATI card was not coming up in the device manager and i was only using intel HD. i have noticed that when that happens i can't see my laptop charging icon changes to plugged in mode even though i plug in the charger , but the laptop was of course charging perfectly . But recently i found my ATI card back in device manager and it was working pretty well. But after exactly a week I started getting some white lines appearing in the display too. With that knowledge i assumed that the black screen issue is a counter-product of the GPU issue. I used safemode to uninstall all the GPU drivers. Then i can log into windows and work normally and windows detects the GPUs and install the plug and play drivers. After they install it i can restart the pc and work normally. But once a shut this down and later when i try to switch it on i get the black screen issue from ground zero. that makes me believe that this is mere a software issue. But those white lines i mentioned about is due to hardware fault i guess. I don't know what to do right now. I don't want ATI graphics, intel HD is ok. i just want to switch this thing on and do my work coz i can't afford another laptop right now.

So last night I turned off my PC as usual. Rebooted it this morning and every time the Windows 7 Logo disappears, all I see is a black screen, no mouse pointer, cant bring up task manager, the pc seems unresponsive. I am currently running the PC in safe mode.
There are other threads on the forums and on google, I have tried everything so far. As a list for you, this is what I have tried:
Windows Restore
Windows Repair
Reinstalling Windows 7 (will not allow me to do so from safe mode)
Booting Windows in low resolution mode.
Booting windows from the Win 7 CD I made, this causes me to get past the windows logo, then all I see is a mouse pointer and a windows background.
Using winkey + P does nothing.
I have 2 GeForce 9800 GX2s - I use 2 displays normally, occasionally using a third. The machine was running fine last night and no new software has been installed for the past 3 days. I assume the issue is multi-display related, however the pc is totally non responsive after the windows logo which suggests something else =/.
I am totally at a loss and need this PC for my work (I work from home in Austria for several companies in other countries), I have been at this since about 5am and 5 hours later there has been no change.

I bought a new Samsung RC520 laptop. I logged in fine and started to install virus software, applications, windows updates etc. In between all this I had to reboot for the installations to be completed with no problems.
I then installed more window updates (office 2010) followed by a reboot. From this point on wards when I power the laptop on it will get as far as the Windows logo screen and then goes into a black screen. If I leave it for 5 minutes the mouse arrow appears but still black screen.
I tried booting into
Safemode, last know configuration, Enable low-resolution video (640×480)" startup but still get the black screen. Ran the repair from the Windows 7 disc. Can't do a system restore as the laptop is so new it hasn't created one yet, doh! Tried plugging it into an external monitor and still black screen on laptop.

I'm having an issue with one of my windows Vista systems. It's a HP computer (blah, I know)... and is several years old. It's issue of late occurs on start-up. After attempting to "Start windows normally", the system will display the load screen then immediately go to a black screen. It doesn't restart... it just stays black. I've tried to go into Safe Mode as well as do a system restore and go to the last known good config. Nothing works. The problem is there is over 200 gb worth of work, school and personal files on this system I need to export to my external hd. After that I don't care what happens to this freakin computer.

I'd hang on the windows 7 logo as it flies up (it freezes on the colored balls) and then it goes to a blue screen, hinting at hardware-related problems. After a restart or two, I am usually able to make it to the desktop like normal. I just took this easy route, assuming that ignoring it would make it go away.Well, this morning, it happened again, but then when it made it passed the windows7 logo, I got to a black screen with just my mouse. This is a common enough problem- plenty of complaints and advice out there. When I try running safe mode, it hangs on AVG-named drivers. So i went and deleted them all through a thumbdrive linux boot (Can't I just reinstall AVG or another program once my comp is working?) but now it hangs on a new driver so I stopped deleting them. CLASSPNP.sys, which is another hugely common problem. Safe mode is out.Put my digital copy of Windows 7 on another thumb drive and booted to that to try and use recovery mode. No recovery images, memory check didn't yell at me, chkdsk seemed to run fine (unless running it in the X or "boot" drive is wrong and I have to figure out how to navigate to the C or D drive in cmd ...but even then, what do I do with the result of chkdsk, especially when it will probably show no problems?) so I THINK recovery tools are out, unless I failed to use them correctly. So now I'm faced with re-installing windows, in which case I have no idea what my activation key is, being that it was a digital copy and I don't have the student access to where I originally downloaded it.
TL;DR:
1) Can I find my win7 activation key with a key-finding/decrypting program while using my linux boot?
2) I've read that my GPU (nvidia 460) or even PSU (Corsair 650) could be to blame- are there ways to troubleshoot/verify that if I don't have other parts to replace them with?

I have an MSI Laptop which I bought about a year ago was running fine and at the beginning of September started having the issue of a black screen, for about 45-60 seconds, between the windows logo and the desktop loading.
The laptop has:
Intel Core i7 460M Processor 2.53Ghz
Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-bit
4G DDR3 memory
Nvidia GeForce GT 540M
15.6" 1366x768 HD
Intel® HD Graphic VGA
[code].....
The above 3 files exist in the directories asked for so not sure why it can't load them.Although the laptop works fine when it's loaded, the additional time on this blackscreen is just winding me up as it didn't do it before.

It boots fine but when it gets to the windows 7 splash screen the log in box takes up to 20 mins to display. When it does display I can log in and the computer runs fine.I have tried:
- virus scan which is clean
- malwarebytes comes up with nothing
- restoring to before the problem started
But, the problems remains - up to 20 mins for the log in to appear. It is almost as if it forgets to put it up.

I need help and suggestions on what to do with this black screen crisis. Mine is a little different that others. so sorry if this is a repeated thread. ive looked everywhere, and no one has the issue when they have dual boot.I have dual boot on my laptop with windows 7 ultimate 32 bit and windows 7 home premium 64 bit. the home premium came pre installed on the laptop and the ultimate version i installed later dual boot (i needed some capabilities that home premium doesn't have).I cannot see anything on my screen after windows logo while booting up my laptop bcz of the black screen after the windows logo. When i boot into WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM. i hear windows logon screen notification noise but see nothing! oddly enough even my built in webcam logs me in with VeriFace software with my face, passwordless! ALSO my laptop boots fine with windows 7 ultimate and i can see everything, and it works great! i need the other version to WORK cause my life is in that other version of windows. i cannot factory restore!!!
What i have tried: the keyboard is also unresponsive, bcz i held down a bunch of keys to see if it makes the beep noise. I closed the laptop lid to see if it goes into hibernation and waited 3 mins to see if it still does, so that when i open it i can see everything (it has worked before). nothing. i rebooted a bunch of times even with a second screen attached, tried to guess switch into projector mode with my function key and switch screen/projector button. i have also done a power cycle. i think the registry is screwed, or maybe the graphics card drivers are ruined. have not done a registry repair through the other windows version (doing that next). i have defragged both partitions for both of the windows 7 versions through the one that works. What may have caused it: the last time i used home premium, i rebooted so that i can use the ultimate version (for the extra capabilities). i was not watching and it booted up in home premium, and the built in cam is so fast that i merely looked at the laptop and it logged me in. i was being unpatient, bcz you have to wait for the lenovo programs to load before you can restart. so i forced shut down (very bad idea) by holding the power button and booted up in ultimate finally while watching.

I share my computer with my father in order to pay off a debt I owe to him, and when I arrived home in the afternoon I was greeted by him, informing me that my computer wouldn't turn on. Generally this would simply be a random issue, or perhaps he turned off the computer and thought it was in sleep (though he's smart enough to tell the difference.). This time, however, was different.I turned the computer on, and to my horror the splash screen shows and then the computer hangs. The only responsive key is Tab, which then shows me the detailed POST description. It tests my memory and shows my processor, etc as well as my drives, but after that it freezes at 'Looking for IDE drives...'. At that point, the only responsive (often it isn't responsive either) key is Delete, and that simply shows a 'prepare to enter Setup' message, and proceeds to do nothing else.I have already tried draining my capacitors (turning my PSU off and holding down the power button), removing and replacing my CMOS battery, continually restarting it, pressing multiple buttons, removing and then putting back my GPU (had to in order to expose my battery) as well as disconnecting and then reconnecting my two drives. I've considered reseating my RAM, but in my past experience doing so has done nothing for previous, similar problems. Both of us have done absolutely nothing that could have damaged the BIOS.

I purchased a system with dual GTX580's about a year and a half ago. I have had issues with system crashes (lockups, no blue screen, and no alt-tabbing out of them) almost from the beginning. Since I am impressed with some of the technical responses I have seen on threads in this forum, thought I'd reach out for help before I pull what hair I have left out.....
I tried literally every different bios update available, every single driver release Nvidia has released, too many clean windows installs to count, MSI Afterburner/EVGA Precision (video voltage increases, clock decreases (removing EVGA superclocking), replaced the SLI bridge, different ram, different powersupply cables, different fan speeds, and so many other things over the past 1.5 years it's rediculous.
In preparation for trashing the cards, I pulled them out and put my old cards back in. These are also EVGA brand, 8800's, also can run them in SLI with the same bridge, and not a single problem. This is while running the same driver release (clean install though) as the 580's.
So I put one 580 back in, both slots 1 & 3, and to my surprise it worked just fine in either PCI slot. Tried the other 580, also works fine when alone. Put them both in, put the bridge on, and it crashes right after Bios loads, before it even makes it to the windows logo/login screen.
Seems to have gotten worse over time (was just during intense gaming, next it's when in windows but not gaiming, sometimes at the Windows loading Logo, and sometimes even at bios load.)
Overheating? Temps are fine..even when stress testing with Kombuster/Furmark/Prime95/MEMTest/etc. temps get warm, up to 85 on CPU cores, and 75 on video card, but all tests are fine.
