Changing Primary Harddisk, Two Raid1 Backup Data Drives Affected?
Jan 6, 2012
I'm currently running a primary disk for my system drive on windows 7, with two other 1tb drives for saving data set to raid1(Mirror each other ). However my primary disk has problems and need to be upgraded.Would I need to reformat the two mirror data drives before i do the upgrade in order to ensure the raid 1 is working

I'm running RAID1 with two 1tb drives. My RAID went critical and split the drives. One drive was listed as LD 2 -1. The other is listed as <single disk>. I was able to unplug either individually and boot into windows. I decided to erase one of them and planned to rebuid the array afterwards. At this point, I can see the erased HDD in BIOS and in RAID setup, but it will not boot to Window with the erased drive connected. It starts to boot into Windows, then gives a brief flash of BSOD, then reboots itself.

I have an OCZ Vertex 3 SSD and 2 WD caviar blue HDDs. I have them installed on an ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z MB. I have Win 7 Home Installed on the SSD and would like to set up a RAID 1 array with the HDDs for my data storage (music, pictures, etc.). From what I understand I must do a hardware RAID setup since Win 7 Home does not support the software RAID array. The only information I could find is how to install windows on the array and not use it as a non-bootable array for data storage.

I start Windows after the machine being off for a while, maybe a day or two, the primary monitor setting changes to my secondary display. As I do actually have two monitors on the video desk, it is fairly easy (for me) to change the setting to what it needs to be. But I am not the only operator that uses this computer, and most of the volunteers know little when it comes to computers of any kind.
Now you would think that someone with my technical background would have been able to fix this issue, and I can...using a 3rd party solution that costs money.
edit: to clarify, I have been having this issue for few years, but I have been the only person using the system. And this was happening on previous systems as well
Specs of the system in question:
Custom Built Desktop;
Windows 7 Professional x64;
[Code].....

So, I want to have Windows 7 Home Premium 86x and 64x versions installed on my PC with dualboot. I have 86x version of Windows 7 installed already. So, for 64x version, I have to create a new partition. The problem is, I already have 4 primary partitions, so I can't create a new one (I read somewhere that Windows have to be installed on a primary partition). Here is the picture: (Don't mind disk 2, it's just the external drive).
If I try to create a partition on "Unallocated", Acronis Disk says this:
My question is, which of these partitions on disk 1 can I safely convert to logical? If I am wrong here and I still won't be able to create a new primary partition for Windows to be installed on. I'm really not so good at this things.

I build, and then support many computers for my friends and family. I have recently started making them feel a bit more "manufactured" by using a factory-style recovery option (press F9 at boot to enter recovery / uses a hidden recovery partition etc...).
The issue I have though, is I often get asked to "wipe" someone's computer following a virus/malware infestation (and yes, I do supply AV, but that isn't always enough).
So, I use Sysprep to install all additional software, drivers etc... but the one problem I have is that I like to have, and usually always configure PC's to store items like Documents/Pictures/Music/Videos etc... on a seperate partition.
The problem is, when I configure this in Sysprep - the settings are lost when the user completes OOBE.
Ideally, I do not want to move the entire "Users" directory, I just want the libraries to never look at any folders on the C: drive, only the ones on D: (D:\%USERNAME%Documents etc...).
I want it so that when files "detect" where to save, it locates the appropriate directory on the D: drive, so they dont have to always manually locate the folders.
The reason I dont want the entire "Users" folder on D: is that following a restore or 2, it will get messy...
I would like to either automate this during setup, or would happily take a manual approach during Sysprep - as long as it applied these settings to all users as and when they are created.
I would like the cleanest way to do this, ideally without junctions/symlinks.

Have a Windows 7 computer with two 500Gb data drives (just files, no OS) that I would like to "merge" into a new 2Tb drive but keep everything on one partition. I know I can clone the drives onto two separate partitions of my new drive, and then do a partition merge and resize to fill up all the free space. Or I can turn on view hidden and system files and simply drag & drop the contents of both drives to my new one.

I'm having issues with transferring data between hard drives in my system. I have 3 500 GB drives in my system connected via esata. Just a few minutes ago I tried transferring 24.1 GB from one hard drive to another and it took forever I was getting under 10 MB per second. Once I got everything transferred I created a folder in the drive I moved everything to and then moved the same 24.1 GB plus another folder that was 10 GB and everything transferred into the folder instant, so fast I couldn't every look to see how long it was taking cause it was there the minutes I moved the folders to the new folder. Why did it take so long transferring that same data from one hard drive to another one in my system?? I should be getting a whole lot more than 10 MB per second.

Have a a Win 7x64 Pro system with 24GB memory Intel DX58SO2 CPU. The driveconfigurations are:C: 80GB SSD (Intel) which contains the OSD: Programs)/E: Data) WD 1TF: (Misc) WD 1TAttempt to backup to the F: drive, above, as well as an external 1T drive connected via USB2 to the computer.Have tried the Windows 7x64 backup package, NovaStor, Acronis and one other backup package. All four of the backup programs NEVER run to completion - they simply quit the backup process. So for almost a year I have been unable to do a proper backup! When the backup stops/quits I have noticed that the drive letters of the disk drives I was backing up (a single file or multiple files from the drive) disappear and the drives are no longer accessible. To restore the drive letters I simply reboot the system and all is as it should be.

I use Karen's Replicator to back up all the folders under my user name but have tried to no avail to exclude appdata including adding the appdata wildcard in Global Exclusions. I suppose there may be other backup utilities I could use but a Google search shows others with the same problem. I'd like to save the 10GB in disk space.

I know how to clone my entire system by going to Control Panel, Backup and Restore, and Create a System Image, but this ostensibly creates a duplicate of OS state, and the entire drive, data and all (for me around 500 GB).I also know how to just backup data alone, but what I don't know how to do is backup just the OS and all installations (separate from raw, individual data and media files), so in the event of disk failure, I can simply reload the old system and programs (but not media files).

am trying to do a backup of my Win 7 system drive (C, but the backup utility is saying that it must backup by non-system drives (E: and H, which happen to have "System Volume Information" folders on them. They are not system drives. E: is my main utilities drive and H: is my games drive.Somehow, Windows thinks they are system drives, when in reality they aren't.Any ideas on how to change them? When I go in to Disk Management, they are not showing as system drives. They are all partitions on the same hard drive, but there are other partitions not included in the backup.

I have tried these discs on two computers (they're Sony DVD-RW's) and brand new, I open them and put them in the disc tray, I press "burn" and it either pretends to write on one computer and then says error after 3minutes (no data is recorded) or it doesn't detect the disc it keeps saying "Please insert a Disc"? I've tried literally everything and I doubt it could be the disc's because they're brand new. The windows fix it centre program identifies an issue but cannot fix it?

I have a system with three hard disks on them. The Primary one has the OS and some programs. Secondary one has programs and data (like pictures and such). Third one has data and backup data.I recently formatted the Primary drive which had Windows Vista on it, and did a full install of Windows 7 Pro.After the install, the Secondary and Tertiary disks showed up in disk management; I just had to assign drive letters to them. The issue: I can see the existing Secondary and Tertiary disks in windows explorer. I can go into properties on each hard disk and see that there is used disk space on them (so the data is still there). But Windows Explorer shows both hard disks as empty. I can't actually see any of the data. What can I do to fix this...obviously without formatting the disks and losing the existing data on there? Is this perhaps a driver issue?

I have a new computer build where I have Win 7 Pro 64-bit installed on a SSD. Then I have a pair of 1TB drives that I setup as mirroring drives in Disc Management.I proceeded to setup my windows backup to the mirrored drive, but it is giving me the warning: When restoring a system image from this volume, the disks on your computer cannot be formatted to match the layout of the disks in the backup. To have full restore functionality, select a volume on basic disk as our backup location.it is a small 64GB drive strictly for the OS and surfing the net... minor games (wife card games, etc.)... and a few other minor things. I mirrored the 1TB drives because they are going to be our music server on our network for our laptops... as well as we planned to backup our laptops to the 1TB drive? I figured I would mirror the 1TB in case one crashed we would have the backup. A backup of the backup, so to speak. However, if I am having issues with not being able to setup windows backup on these from this computer, I assume I will run into the same issues with the laptop backups. Is there no way to use windows backup to a mirrored drive?

I have Asus N55SF laptop, with Windows 7 SP1 64 bit. Also, I have 2 external hard drives. One with USB 3.0, and one USB 2.0. Following problems, I am going to describe below, happen to the both of them. Just to mention, external drives are tested on desktop computer and following problems do not happen.Let me now describe what happens when I try certain actions:
- When I try to copy large files (10 or more GB) I get an error that destination is no longer visible. External drives disappear from My Computer and I can't do safe remove. But when I copy files using programs FastCopy or TeraCopy everything copies well and drives do not disappear.
- When I try to do Windows Backup and encrypt them using BitLocker drives also disappear, and are not visible within OS.
- There is a difference between external hard with USB 3.0 port and the one with 2.0 port:
1-when one with 3.0 disappears after described actions I can't see it from Device Manager, I can see it only after windows reboot. USB 3.0 disk connects to one USB 3.0 port on laptop.
2-when one with 2.0 port disappears I can see it from Device Manager, and I only have to unplug it, and plug it in again to see it. USB 2.0 disk connects to 2 USB 2.0 ports on laptop.
Common to both disks is that when then disappear from My computer the diode on the external disk cases are still flashing, what probably means that they have some power. Both disk are formated to NTFS, and Allocation unit size is set to: Default. Their removal policy is set to: Better performance (default). On laptop I only have Windows, Office and Asus drivers. Antivirus is: MSE.

Got a new PC (Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit) with a 1TB drive. I added an extra internal drive which happens to be one of my old 300GB XP drives (231GB free). There are some apps on the old drive (Photoshop 6.0) which still run & I'd like to use them. Can I run Windows Backup and create an image on the old drive even though there are 70GB's of apps & files on there already?? Does the backup wizard partition or format the selected drive in the process of backing up? Obviously I'd like to keep accessing that stuff if I can.

I wondering if anyone can help answer a problem I am experiencing with using Windows 7 own backup tool.
I have two 500GB hard drives in my system. Drive 0 is partitioned with 390 GB as the C: drive containing Windows 7 and user data, the remaining space is unallocated ready for me to install Ubuntu 9.10. Drive 1, as D:, is the full 465.8GB and is planned to store backups. Before my initial backup this drive was empty.
In the past I've used Acronis to backup, but my version is old and before purchasing the latest version I thought I would try Windows own backup as I have got the impression that it's pretty good.
However, backing up my C: to D: takes up more space than I expected it too.
C:
Size: 390GB
Used: 185GB
Free: 205GB
D: after initial backup (drive empty before then)
Size: 465.76GB
Used: 320.01GB
Free: 145.75GB
Is there something I doing wrong? or is there a reason why it is nearly twice the size? I chose the recommend option and let Windows decide what to backup, was that the wrong decision?
If it helps these are the three files/folders I see at the root of D:
MediaID.bin, WindowsImageBackup and LIANLI-QUAD (my computer name)
