View 1 Replies View RelatedI know a lot of options have to be checked and unchecked to make windows xp secure so I'm wondering if it's the same with 7.
It would be used only to game, surf, or maybe do some photoshop type stuff. I have no use for file sharing or anything like that.
When i walk away from my Windows 7 PC, i'd like to lock the screen for good security and put it to sleep for good energy savings. Doesn't that make sense, at least in some situations? But if you lock it, you can't sleep it, and if you put it to sleep, then you can't lock it.
Probably most people lock it and allow it to go to sleep later after a timeout period. But we could all be greener if there were a way to do both sleep and lock at the same time. win7q has chosen the best answer to his/her question.Click here to view the answer that was selected.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThe issues come when I leave the PC overnight, idling, with the monitor physically turned off (I use the power button). When I come back in the morning and turn the monitor back on, there is a black screen and the PC won't wake.I have left the computer idling during the day for many hours with the monitor being in standby (PC turns it off, not me).Interestingly, when the PC "hangs" after the night I can still access stuff over the network, and play some videos on my TV which is DLNA-ed to it. Logs do not show any issues, in fact there is some logging going on all night meaning the PC isn't totally dead. However, I try plugging some USB devices in and out, but it doesn't make that USB recognition noise.
Things I have tried:
- playing around with power settings, ie. disabling USB turn-off, disabling ULPS on my vid card (ultra-low-power-savings mode), changing the screen turn-off times, turning sleep and hybernate/hybrid off
- note it is NOT a taskbar auto-hide issue. If you are having crashing problems after idling (still able to access PC for 10s of seconds before it freezes), be sure to check out information on the auto-hide of the taskbar
Other info:
- I run utorrent overnight As a test, I turned my monitor off (physically) during the day, and came back to a "hung" system. I think this may be the root of the issue but it's still driving me up a wall because it's such a weird problem. I have to keep trouble shooting the issue to be certain. Furthermore, my main concern, and the reason for writing this post, is that I want to make sure this is not some hardware issue that is later going to progressively get worse. To me it doesn't seem like a hardware thing, but maybe there are some experts out there who can shed some light.
I have recently installed windows 7 home premium and never set a password upon installation (it's a home pc and didn't feel the need to - bad call I'm sure!).Anyway...I restarted my pc today and it is now asking for a password. I have no idea what this could be. I tried everything I know...I did not install any new software. I did however install windows updates. Do you have any idea what happened and why it's asking me for a password? Is there some default password? I did a google search for quite a while and found nothing.

I googled timers and found one program called "Enuff PC" and on their site they said they will not be updating their product anymore because windows 7 and windows vista now have capabilities to preform the same action..

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen ever i have any type of screen open (i.e. the internet, a game, word, Photoshop, ect.) and i hit the caps lock key, my computer takes me off of the program i was using. It did not exit out of it, its just the same as if you are typing, click on the task bar, then have to re-click on the computers window of the program to continue using it. This is very annoying when it comes to typing long essays.
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen I hit Caps Lock in Windows 7 an alert (picture of a padlock in grey) icon appears indicating I have turned it on or off. While the alert is showing no input from the keyboard is accepted. This is frustrating because I usually hit Caps Lock and type immediately, and then find about 6 letters have not been accepted. The speed of the system (laptop) is otherwise OK. Is there a way to reduce the time the alert shows, or turn it off altogether?

View 1 Replies View RelatedSo here are the requirements of what I am looking for.
* I need the computer to boot up and automatically log into windows without entering a password * I need the computer to lock itself at some point to protect the desktop but still allow services to run (not log out)
This PC is running Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit edition and is running as a file server. I know I can password protect the login, but then I have to login in order to gain access to its services. I am trying to get around this. I need it to boot up entirely and then at some point lock itself down.

View 9 Replies View Relatedmy office has a terminal server and every time I launch it with dual monitors the terminal server windows do not lock at the maximum size. I can move the entire terminal server window up and down and side to side just by moving the mouse...it is irritating and not allowing me to use the computer efficiently.
If I use 1 monitor, the screen locks. The other guys in the office with Windows XP do not have this problem either.

I've got one laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium (Somy Vaio PCG 71911m) which always boots with num lock enabled.Since I often use different keyboards is there any way to disable this on boot or turn it off automatically. The BIOS surprisingly doesn't seem to have an option for this --most laptops I've used in the pass had a setting in the Bios to turn this off at boot.

However, when I hide my files/folders and then search for one of the file names in the Start Menu search bar, the file will show up despite it be hidden and the 'Do not show hidden files' option is checked. I also attempted to put a password on the folder (one folder has all the files I want hidden) using this site for a guideline: How to create a Password Protected Folder in Windows 7hen I lock the folder, I can still search for the files in the Start Menu search bar and they will open without the password. Is there a better site or program to effectively lock my folder/files? And what can I do to prevent the Start Up search from looking for my hidden files.

View 5 Replies View RelatedLong story short, my ex girlfriend got a netbook a few years ago, and it came with windows 7 starter. I gave her a copy of my valid Windows 7 Home Premium keys and taught her how to reinstall Windows 7 on a USB drive. So now she has the netbook with windows 7 on it, and she upgraded to a new 15 inch HP Envy, she doesn't use the netbook anymore. And since we don't talk anymore, any attempt to ask if I can have the key back and she reinstall the old system on there from the recovery partition, it's all gone unanswered.I just want to have my windows 7 Home premium key back, she isn't using the netbook and I need it to install now.
What I'm wondering is if I can just install windows 7 on my laptop, and then activate it, I know it will deactivate the netbook, but can I lock the key to my computer only so if she or anyone else tried to reactivate it, it wouldn't let them and it wouldn't affect my computer?I just want my key back and she isn't using it anymore, she just blocked me on facebook today because I contacted her about it. So I'm done with trying to work with her and I just want to get this over with.
